This is an ARC E-book copy that I got from the author Pamela Gunn.
Here is what works and dosen't work for me in this story.
What Wins - Quirky Small-Town Cast: From the rumor-mill maven Honeybell to the nervous historical society treasurer Henry Lovell, the eccentric townspeople keep the pages turning. Moxie the Dog: - Ruby's canine companion steals the show, adding a perfect layer of humor and heart.Brisk Pacing: - At a tight 200 pages, the book cuts out the filler, delivering a quick, satisfying weekend puzzle.
What Misses - Rushed Motives: The complex financial ledger motives and suspect backstories are introduced rapidly, making the final resolution feel slightly abrupt. Predictable Tropes: - The "stubborn amateur vs. grumpy sheriff" dynamic plays strictly by the genre rules without offering many surprises.
Final Verdict: - 5 Stars An easy-to-read, comforting amateur sleuth mystery that captures classic cozy elements perfectly. It is a fantastic choice for readers looking for a lighthearted who did it, filled with community politics, southern wit, and a touch of danger.

Who killed the president of the historical society? Ruby Hartwell owns Ruby’s Roots nursery & looks into it with Moxie the smart clue-finding K9. They solve the whodunit so the sheriff can make an arrest. I love the humor in all 4 books of this series (I’m including the prequel, A Murder Most Mulchy). I’m always laughing out loud & look forward to the next book. The author kindly shared a link to the other books & the link for the prequel is free, so I recommend you get it. I got this cozy mystery as an ARC from Book Sprout & this is my review.

Really enjoyed this Ruby Hartsell mystery set in Louisiana where Parishes take the place of Counties and property ownership is influenced by French law...plus bootleggers tunnels! The characters are well realized, and the mystery kept me guessing. I received an ARC from the author but the opinions are purely my own.
