Brian Michael Bendis

A comic book writer and erstwhile artist. He has won critical acclaim (including five Eisner Awards) and is one of the most successful writers working in mainstream comics. For over eight years Bendis’s books have consistently sat in the top five best sellers on the nationwide comic and graphic novel sales charts.

Though he started as a writer and artist of independent noir fiction series, he shot to stardom as a writer of Marvel Comics' superhero books, particularly Ultimate Spider-Man.

Bendis first entered the comic world with the "Jinx" line of crime comics in 1995. This line has spawned the graphic novels Goldfish, Fire, Jinx, Torso (with Marc Andreyko), and Total Sell Out. Bendis is writing the film version of Jinx for Universal Pictures with Oscar-winner Charlize Theron attached to star and produce.

Bendis’s other projects include the Harvey, Eisner, and Eagle Award-nominated Powers (with Michael Avon Oeming) originally from Image Comics, now published by Marvel's new creator-owned imprint Icon Comics, and the Hollywood tell-all Fortune and Glory from Oni Press, both of which received an "A" from Entertainment Weekly.

Bendis is one of the premiere architects of Marvel's "Ultimate" line: comics specifically created for the new generation of comic readers. He has written every issue of Ultimate Spider-Man since its best-selling launch, and has also written for Ultimate Fantastic Four and Ultimate X-Men, as well as every issue of Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, Ultimate Origin and Ultimate Six.

Brian is currently helming a renaissance for Marvel’s AVENGERS franchise by writing both New Avengers and Mighty Avengers along with the successful ‘event’ projects House Of M, Secret War, and this summer’s Secret Invasion.

He has also previously done work on Daredevil, Alias, and The Pulse.

This comic has three stories. One with the Guardians of the Galaxy, one with Thanos, and one with Spiderman from old times.

The first one-shot has Tony Stark describing each of the Guardians to Venom. Venom agrees to be a liasion from Earth for the Guardians.

The next one shot has Thanos wonder about mysteries that he still isn't able to solve. He attempts to have a conversation with Drax but Drax doesn't want to. Thanos isn't able to see Mistress Death or the Infinity Well or there will be consequences.

The last one-shot has a medieval Spiderman perform for a group. He then asks them to wrestle him. No one succeeds until Morlun arrives. He surprises Spiderman, throws him far away, and then kills him. Morlun says he is going to kill all the spiders.

I enjoyed this comic. Nice to see Spiderman and the Guardians. Wonder why Thanos thought Drax would want to have a conversation with him after he killed his family. Not sure what to think of Venom.

This was a damn good comic book. The art style was well done, the story was gripping and I couldn't turn the pages quick enough, the combination of characters was wonderful. I really want to read more of this version of Guardians of the Galaxy, it looks damn good.

The only thing that annoys me is when it gets to 47%, it just turns into comic previews that I just don't have any interest for. A bit more of the comic would have been appreciated. It's damn annoying to be really into a comic to get coming soon!; I'd read a horror sampler if I wanted this stuff.

A definite recommendation to science-fiction fans, Marvel fans and GotG fans!

This, to me, is exactly what Free Comic Book Day is about. Comic publishers promoting their hot/rising properties with interesting comics that introduce the characters without having elements that would be difficult for someone reading the series to follow if they hadn't read this comic (which is a definite possibility considering it is only readily available one day, ever). Also, in addition to the Guardians of the Galaxy segment, which introduced Venom to the team, there is a second segment promoting an upcoming Thanos title that was just as interesting, and featured him and Drax the Destroyer of the Guardians of the Galaxy.

I remember the day when Marvel villans were bad guys and not Avengers with fondness. First story is okay, second teasers not so much mostly becacuse they are far more open-ended.

It's ok for a cliffhanger comic series.

Many comics have many storylines to them. I hate it when they have cliffhangers because it's hard to find the rest of the story. I understand the cliffhanger part for career benefits, having to buy another to continue and read on, but it still drives me crazy... Again, MARVEL is a very good superhero comic series and I congratulate them on making more superheroes for kids, teens, and adults to look up to. FYI: mine's Thor... :)

The main part of the comic was interesting but I didn't like the other 2 previews at all.

In this FCBD 2014 issue "Guardians of the Galaxy #1" Tony Stark interviews a new recruit for the Guardians and who it is comes as quite a surprise. It also includes a preview of the Thanos graphic novel "The Infinity Revelation" and a preview of Spider-man "Staging Ground".
All 3 stories are good reading and the Guardians can always be counted on for a good laugh. The art work is spectacular as is the inking.

Comic Book Review: Guardians of the Galaxy: One-Shots FCBD 2014: Guardians of the Galaxy #1

In the vibrant, action-packed world of Marvel’s cosmic heroes, "Guardians of the Galaxy: One-Shots FCBD 2014" serves as an engaging introduction to the beloved team. Featuring the talent of writers Brian Michael Bendis and Jim Starlin, along with the striking illustrations of Nick Bradshaw, this comic book is a delightful treat for both longtime fans and newcomers alike.

The first issue captures the essence of the Guardians—eccentric, irreverent, and undeniably fun. Bendis, known for his knack for character development, manages to infuse each member of the team with distinct personalities that shine throughout the story. From Star-Lord's charismatic bravado to Gamora's fierce determination and Rocket Raccoon's sharp wit, the dialogue crackles with energy and humor, drawing readers into the larger-than-life adventures of this ragtag group.

The narrative itself offers a perfect blend of action and comedy, characteristic of the Guardians. The plot revolves around a significant threat that prompts the team to come together, showcasing their dynamic and teamwork. The pacing is brisk, ensuring that there’s never a dull moment as the Guardians confront cosmic adversaries and navigate the chaos that typically follows them. Bendis captures the spirit of camaraderie that defines the Guardians, making it easy to root for them as they tackle challenges head-on.

Nick Bradshaw’s artwork plays a crucial role in bringing the story to life. His vibrant illustrations are dynamic and visually striking, filled with expressive character designs that perfectly complement the tone of the story. The action sequences are particularly well-executed, conveying a sense of movement and urgency that immerses the reader in the cosmic chaos. Additionally, the colorful palettes used throughout the comic enhance the whimsical nature of the Guardians’ universe.

While this one-shot serves as a great jumping-on point for new readers, it may leave those unfamiliar with the broader context of the Guardians’ storylines feeling slightly adrift. However, Bendis ensures that even those new to the franchise can enjoy the humor and camaraderie without needing extensive background knowledge.

Overall, "Guardians of the Galaxy: One-Shots FCBD 2014" is a fantastic comic book that captures the heart and humor of Marvel’s cosmic superheroes. With strong writing, memorable characters, and eye-catching artwork, it’s an enjoyable read that paves the way for more intergalactic adventures. Whether you’re a devoted fan or just seeking a lighthearted and entertaining escape, this one-shot is worth picking up for a dose of cosmic fun!

I love Guardians of The Galaxy so much! There's no way someone can dislike Groot and his group. They're hilarious. I was excited to read more about them and I liked this comic. It was a surprise to see that Venom was also an member on this alternative universe. I liked it. I also enjoyed seeing Tony. He's one of my favorite superheroes!
I thougth that the two previews at the end of the comic book wasn't necessary. I didn't liked them and it didn't add nothing to the comic itself.
Now I'm even more excited for Guardians of the Galaxy- Vol. 2 movie. I can't wait!

Mr. Stark is explaining the Guardians of the Galaxy to Corporal Thompson.

Peter Quill is a half-human, half-Spartax prince.

Drax is like a blend of Hulk and Wolverine. Thanos killed his entire family.

Rocket resembles an Earth raccoon—but don’t tell him that. And he’s very tech-savvy.

Gamora is Thanos’s daughter. She’s been trained from birth for this; she’s considered to be the most dangerous woman in the galaxy.

Groot is a talking tree.

Stark’s point is that they’re like the Avengers, only up in space.

Thanos and the Infinity Revelation is middling.

Spider-verse is bizarre.

Agent Venom tags along with the Guardians of the Galaxy!

The story takes place at the Avenger's mansion. Tony briefs Flash Thompson, on his mission to accompany the GOG. An Avenger representative, Agent Venom quickly charms his new team.

Short, but exciting. It had a cinematic feel to it from the get-go. In addition, there are two short comics featuring Thanos and Spiderman. A glimpse of what is to come.

Excellent fun,

Great comic book introduction to “guardians of galaxy.” The illustrations are excellent. I only wish it had not ended. I wanted and still do more to read!! I also want to read the excerpt of the Spider-Man. I can’t help but wonder how Spider-Man survived. I enjoyed reading this as I felt I was in a different world.

Not what I expected

An introduction to the Guardians by Tony Stark himself. Its the opening part of a series that leads the way to a bigger story. Included in this free comic was another two "teasers" for other graphic novels.

Good preview

This contains three mini-stories, and they are all pretty interesting. Agent Venom looks like a cool character. And the Spider-verse storyline looks good too. Worth checking out!

Enjoyed the graphics read a lot of comic books in my day.
Still looking great for artistic ideas, and still fun for a quick read.
My favorites have been the Valiant franchise, I’ve enjoyed the fresh ideas they have on characters and their development.

Too many stories

Three in 25 pages, not enough time to develop a good tease. And how did Wider man get in Shakespeare's England? Ok, one tease......

Good little group of stories that are clearly going to be series however would maybe have preferred just one or two of the stories and then they could have been longer.
