Heather Topham Wood’s obsession with novels began in childhood while growing up in a shore town in New Jersey. Besides writing, Heather is a pop culture fanatic and has an obsession with supernatural novels and TV shows.
"The Ex Trials" by Heather Topham Wood is the fourth book in her "Falling For Autumn" series and centers around Casey and Cole.
We've had a glimpse of their burn and crash relationship before, but now it's time to find out what their story really is about.
This book was full of surprises. While I expected a lot of sexual tension and banter between Casey and Cole on their way to happiness, I didn't expect the seriousness that this story offered. "The Ex Trials" not only has steam, romance and humor, but also takes on a serious topic - one that is at the forefront of the news regularly and that brings so much heartache and devastation.
As always with Heather Topham Wood, the topic was handled with utmost respect and accuracy, the intensity of it knocking the air out of my lungs. It was well-balanced thanks to the lighter bits. And it allowed me glimpses into the lives of the characters we've met in the previous books - which was like seeing old friends.
Casey's character was very likable. She was sassy and sarcastic, never keeping her tongue in check. But a part of it was her trying to protect herself from getting hurt. She's more than just pretty looks and the chance for a good time. Deep down she's vulnerable and wants to be loved, but doesn't feel deserving. Especially not after hurting Cole.
Cole is a rockstar to die for. A hot and talented musician, he's also not scared of hard work. Having lost his father, he has a hard time letting someone in - except Casey. He can't stay away from her, no matter how hard he tries - even after she broke his heart. His struggle to forgive her was heart-breaking, even more so because she couldn't forgive herself.
But things only got harder for them when the ugly truth reared its head and it was on Casey and Cole to prove if their love is strong enough.
The only thing that made the book fall a bit short for me is that I still don't know what Casey and Cole have in common. What they love about each other and what drew them in other than their sexual attraction. But of that, they had plenty.
I have mixed emotions here. On the one hand, I'm really glad this book touched on specific notions our society has due to rape culture. On the other hand, I feel like this is already something we saw in the first book of this series. While I appreciate the story here, it very much felt like a recycled plot so it was harder to be interested in, especially when I guessed the plot was going to go the way it did so early on.
I found Casey to be really frustrating here. I don't like the way she shut down her friends when they were trying to help her, and I really didn't like the way she treated Lexi when Lexi was the only one saying anything that made any sort of sense. I've never been in Casey's shoes, so I can't pretend to know how I would react, but her reaction bothered me. Autumn and Lexi are trying to give their take on what happened between Casey and Justin, and instead of hearing them out, Casey's main thought is "I'm nobody's victim," and "if I had been raped, I'd remember it," the latter of which was the most annoying thing I have ever read, because she had said multiple times that she didn't remember what happened that night. If she couldn't remember, how could she know that she had been raped or if she hadn't? If she couldn't remember saying yes, then she couldn't remember saying no either, and her stubbornness against that notion, and her determination to just believe she had cheated on Cole was aggravating. Maybe it's because I can't relate to the situation, or maybe it's because I've spoken out about rape culture so often that the way Casey was unintentionally perpetuating it upon herself, but I just really didn't the way she was acting.

Predictable! I did wish the author had went in another direction as to the break up of Cole and Casey. Been there done that already in this series. It was nice to see where they were all at 5 years later. Although I did wonder if Evan ever settled down or if he was still being a man-whore. I can't remember if it happens in this book or the one before this one but there was a point when Cole and Evan were doing Rock, Paper, Scissors to see who got first dibs with Casey and Evan did paper and Cole did rock. How did Cole win because we all know paper beats rock. The comment was my rock crushed your paper. NOT you wrap paper around rock and win. Get your facts straight.
I really liked the previous books in this series and this one was not different. So if you liked the other novels, you don’t want to miss this one. All the characters from the previous books appear and it is always nice to read how they are doing. If you haven’t started this series, I recommend this series if you love a good college romance with angst. Autumn, Lexi and Delia have found the love of their life and now it’s time for their best friend Casey to find the love of her life.
Casey and Cole broke up six months ago. She thought (and actually still thinks) he is the one, but she made a stupid mistake that resulted in their break up. Everybody thinks Casey is a party girl and always has a good time, but she’s a fraud. Like every girl, she wants someone who loves her and whom she loves back. She thought she found that person in Cole. Cole really liked Casey and liked spending time with her. When he saw her, he only saw her. He can’t forgive her for the mistake she made and never wants to see her. When the both of them go on a cruise for the combined bachelor and bachelorette party of Autumn and Blake, they see each other for the first time since their break up. The feelings come back fast and their attraction is still very strong.
Cole is the bassist in a rock-band and he has tattoos, so he is kind of a bad boy and never had a problem getting a girl. When he meets Casey, he wants her and only her. He also sees who she really is and not the party girl. He knows Casey hasn’t told everything about her mistake and he wants to forgive her because he can’t stop thinking about her and he still wants her. Casey has made the mistake, but not everything is what it seems. I sometimes wished she just told someone, and especially Cole, but I get that she felt ashamed and guilty. Casey really believes Cole is the one and she hopes that he can forgive her someday. They are perfect for each other and love each other very much (even if they hadn’t said the actual words), but they have their ups and downs. I really wanted them together and that took a long time, because Casey held things back and Cole didn’t like that. The epilogue was perfect!
This was another great book in the Falling for Autumn series. This is the story of Casey Silvers and Cole Caldwell. Casey is Autumn's best friend and Cole is Levi's brother, Delia's boyfriend. Cole has a twin brother, Evan and they are all in the band with Levi. They are becoming more known and will probably be making it big sometime. Cole and Casey were in a relationship but something terrible happened and they ended. Now they are both stuck on a cruise together when Autumn and Blake's bachelor and bachelorette parties are combined.
Casey grew up with parents that didn't really care too much about her. Her father has always been more married to his job and he never really cared to be there for his daughter. Her mother was always looking out for another husband that had money to get what she wanted. She thought that her and Casey were more friends than mother and daughter. She's been free spirited and did what she wanted for years. But there was something about Cole that drew her in. The sex was amazing but there was so much more to it. She was falling in love with him.
Cole is so much more than the gorgeous bass player. For many years he was a player like Evan but from day one of meeting Casey he knew she was more to him than just another girl. He's sweet, smart, and there is so much more to him than how he appears. He would do anything for Casey and he knows she is the one for him.
This was a fitting end to the series. We not only get the Casey/Cole story, but updates on the other couples in the series, culminating in the wedding of Autumn and Blake.
Casey's story is not what I expected, but it's an important one. Rape culture is all over the news and the more it's spoken about, the better. It was sad the way Casey doubted herself and her own instincts, but not surprising. Read any online article about sexual assault and in the comments are always people trying to blame the victim (or call her a liar) instead of putting the blame where it needs to be.
Casey and Cole were a good match, once they got past their communication problems. I loved the fact that Cole didn't have to rescue Casey or solve her problems, she did that all on her own.
The epilogue was five years later, and I liked that it gave a glimpse of their lives as they built their families.
WOW....I SO LOVE THIS BOOK....NO SPOILERS ......you won't be disappointed I promise
This is so good I read it in one sitting, I welled up a lot and wanted to bang heads together more than once...... Heather is a FANTASTIC author that writes in a way that you are there inside her book part of there world..The saddest part for me is it finished and I hoping there will be more to come (how she can top this I don't know)... I'm very honoured to have had an ARC it's a pleasure to be asked....You won't be disappointed I promise .....
This book was so funny. Cole and Casey have great lines that I kept highlighting in my eReader. The plot turned serious but the twist brought the whole story of Autumn and her friends full circle. It made sense for Casey to find herself in the same way Autumn was forced to. The Epilogue was great too since I always love happy endings.
I LOVE this series hard. So different than most NA books in the way that it's not only about romance but about being a girl in a world that's not always kind to women. The heroes don't "save" the girls, they save themselves and then find love. Casey's story is an important one for all 20-somethings to read.
This is an all-nighter must read! Even if you didn't read the other books in the series, no problem. It definitely can stand on its own. Very bittersweet to say goodbye to some of my fave characters. I love Autumn and Casey!
Loved the conclusion to the series!!! This can be read alone or as part of the FFA series. I recommend starting with the first book since it allows for a greater connection to these amazing characters.
The Ex Trials is a second chance love story between two people who have tried to move on from each other but can't.
Six months ago, Casey made the biggest mistake of her life. She ruined a chance at love with her soul mate, Cole. She knows she did the right thing breaking up with him, but it still feels so wrong. Now, she's stuck on a cruise ship with him -- and all her friends who have no clue the real reason they broke up. Casey's hoping she can make it through the cruise without her secrets ruining the rest of her relationships.
Cole knows why Casey broke up with him, but he's having a hard time accepting it. He should have been able to return to his rock star ways, but he can't seem to forget her. Cole thought hooking up with random women on the cruise would be the way to show Casey he's moved on, but he can't stop thinking about her.
As the cruise gets on its way, Cole goes out of his way to prove to Casey that he's the man for her. As much as Casey wants him, she's just as scared he might find out the truth of what really happened before they broke up.
The Ex Trials was a fast-paced, surprisingly deep story. It had all of the steamy, sexy moments you expect in a New Adult romance, but it also dealt with some tough issues in a realistic way. I liked the way the author portrayed the situation.
It was easy to understand Casey's motives in this book. She was doing what she thought was the right thing for Cole and her friends. Her self-esteem had taken a hit and she was doing everything she could to stay strong when her heart was completely broken.
Cole was a character I didn't quite get. It was cool that he was willing to pursue Casey after why she ended things with him, but I was surprised that he wasn't madder. I would have been -- even if he still loved her.
I liked reading about Casey and Cole reconnecting, but I would have like to have seen their relationship immediately before and after they broke up. The author gives us flashbacks to what went down for Casey, but I feel like I would have connected better to the characters had I been able to read the entire progression of their relationship. Maybe you get to see part of it the first couple of books. I have to admit I haven't read them, so I wouldn't know. Although, the way the story is told, I'm guessing not. But that's what this story was missing for me personally.
The Ex Trials was a dramatic second chance romance perfect for romance readers who like a love story that touches on deeper issues.
*I received this book in exchange for an honest review.*
I really enjoyed this book! I love reunion style stories! The chemistry between Cole and Casey was intense! It needed more steam, though. Just a scene and a half doesn’t do it for me. I did like how it wasn’t completely perfect once they were brought back together. There were still obstacles to overcome.
The story dealt with a more serious situation than I anticipated. Casey drove me absolutely nuts, but I’ve never been in that type of situation, so I shouldn’t be judging. The conclusion came up quick. I wish the process that had led to the outcome was more descriptive. There were still plenty of laugh out loud moments! I loved the side characters, like Cole’s brother, Evan, especially. His lines were too funny!
Overall, this was a quick book to get through! There were many points that I had a difficult time putting it down! I’m looking forward to reading more of Heather’s work!
This was my first time reading a book by Heather Topham Wood and I have to say she took me completely by surprise. I was expecting a book full of steamy times with a party girl and her hot rocker; instead I got a beautiful book about love that helps to address a serious topic. Casey puts on an act for everyone. She wants everyone to see her as the party girl, the one that’s always looking for a good time. The problem with this is, no one really got to know how to know the real her. She had thought she had found the one guy she could trust with herself, but crap happens and that fell apart. Cole is the bad boy rocker, the bass player in a band with his brothers. A bit of a manwhore, he put himself out there and fell in love. And she destroyed his heart. Now he has to spend a week with her on a cruise boat.
So when I first read this book, I thought it was going to be just your average second chances book. But it’s not. I don’t want to go into too much detail because I don’t want to give too much away but the author tackles a serious issue with some serious class. That alone makes me want to go read her other novels. Add to the fact that the book was enjoyable and it just gives me even more incentive.
I love Casey; she’s sarcastic, witty and tough. But underneath that armor is a soft spot that she’s protecting. She wants to be loved and she wants that badly. She just hasn’t told anyone that, she’s holding so much inside. Just a girl after my own heart. Cole is hot and broody. The sexy times between them are steamy but don’t take front stage in the book, the romance and story do. I like that. There is some great character development in the book. The side characters are great and really add to the story. Evan is a character you just love to hate. There were times I just wanted to reach through my kindle to smack him.
Overall, a great story with an HEA, despite tackling a serious topic I don’t think it had an overly angsty feel to me. It was a pretty easy read; I was able to tackle it in a night. I really enjoyed it. I’m going to go back and read the rest of the series.
The Ex Trials is part of a series from Heather called Falling For Autumn. I will add I hadn't read the series and was able to read this book easily, so it can be read as a stand alone. With reading as many NA romance books as I do I struggle with some when they feel slightly 'samey'. That makes reviewing the book harder in my opinion namely as I feel I've read many of them before but just changing the names and maybe the location. The Ex Trials was refreshing in that its only my second (I think) book that took place on a cruise. However, with the exception of Autumn's drama in this book (I hate to write it so flippantly but don't want to give away spoilers), this book doesn't really stand out hugely as something new and different. That being said, this is not a bad NA book either and rather enjoyable.
I did like Casey and Cole. In fact the whole group seemed to have a natural feeling to them which made the relationships more believable. I loved Casey's attitude but also loved that it often covered up her insecurities. Cole was a bit of a mind blower for me in that I had some preconceived notions about him and they turned out to be completely wrong. I loved their sexual chemistry but at times didn't feel much past that. It felt more 'lusty' that 'love'.
The story has a great pace, there is laughs, hot sex, deep dark moments and even some 'aww' moments too. I loved the variety and the deeper undertones of this story. That made for a good read. Having read this I'm not sure if I will pick up the other books as I feel obviously this is set further a head than some of the others, so I would be back tracking. However, I did like this story and will say I think whether you have read the other Falling For Autumn books or just fancy something with a bit of variety about it, then I would recommend giving The Ex Trials a go. Its not the best NA book I've read, but its certainly not bad either and was rather good. I loved Cole and also was impressed with Heather's (Author) writing style. 3.5 stars.
The Ex Trials was a sobering and thoroughly unexpected kind of romance. It had a lot of intense issues in it. I liked it, even though it rubbed me the wrong way in some instances.
About the Characters... - Initially, I was not taken with Casey. I understood her struggles, but I did not like the position she took early on, especially with regard to how she portrayed herself to her friends. It didn't make sense to me that she would pretend to be someone she wasn't before her closest friends. That lacked integrity to me. Real friends would know and wouldn't stand for it. It made Casey come off as deceptive and perhaps a bit manipulative in my eyes. Later, I warned up to her. She was a lost girl trying to find herself. Thankfully, she did just that by the end of it all.
- Cole was a keeper. He felt authentic as a character. He was sexy, troubled, sensitive, and steady. I loved seeing him transform. Even through the hard hits, he was being shaped into someone amazing. His relationship with Casey was not an easy one, but he navigated the troubled waters in such a real way.
- Cole's brother, Evan, was a lovable butthead. He was rough around the edges but a total charmer and loyal brother and friend, at the end of the day. I was hoping to see him find his special.
- Autumn and Blake were too cute for words. I have not read their story, however, I might just do that. It sounded insane.
- Lexi was cool. She was a lioness. I liked how supportive and fierce she was.
- Levi and Delia were notable characters that I wouldn't have minded getting to know.

I received this book via NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
Wow. I was so not expecting the twists that shocked me in this book. I selected this book because I thought the blurb sounded interesting. The blurb did not due this book justice. This is the fourth book in a series but I have not read any of the previous books. Therefore I was blind going in. Yet I could follow the story easily. Casey abruptly left Cole after a few weeks of a relationship. For reasons I didn’t know but were brought out later. The two who seemed to have parted on bad terms must face each other at their friend’s joint bachelor/bachelorette parties. Not the traditional type of party, this party takes place during a weeklong cruise. The tension between the two of them jumps off the pages. The angst when they try to be adults about it is thick. The need to be with each other and fighting it is amazingly written. I was so excited, then my heart was torn out, then I was proud of them both. What an amazing journey author Heather Topham Wood took me on. I am now a fan of her writing. Truly gifted author who took the reader on an emotional journey. She isn’t afraid to take risks with her work and tackle sensitive subjects. I was floored when I got to the chapter that Casey, Autumn, and Lexi talked about the night that Cole and Casey ended their relationship. I understood Casey’s quandary. You always think that you are responsible for your action. What an amazing job… I am speechless. My only thought is that Ms. Wood could have expanded and told me why Casey and Cole were attracted to each other, not just the sexual part. But this book is worth the time to read, you won’t be disappointed.
The Ex Trials was a pretty good read. I enjoyed the drama in this contemporary romance. It was a tad bit predictable to some extent, but still enjoyable.
Casey is the girl that acts wild and carefree, but deep down she's smart, sweet and longing for true love. I adored Casey even though she made dumb decisions. She had a tough upbringing between her mother going from man to man and her father not being there for her. Casey runs from her problems and tries to make them seem like she deserves the outcomes when she truly doesn't. Casey was absolutely amazing and head over heels for Cole. She battled with her decision in sleeping with Cole, but when she found out the truth and moved passed it the right way she became empowered and phenomenal.
Cole is a rock star that loved all the girls, but he fell in love with Casey even when she broke his heart. Cole is runner...he runs from his problems without taking the time to figure them out. He also sweet, tender, loving and hot. I loved the ending and how he felt bad for all the things he said to Casey when he found out the truth about Atlantic City.
The romance for Casey and Cole was amazing. Two lovers who broke up over a lie but reconnected and lived a happy, fulfilled life. They were absolutely amazing, especially when they decided to take things slow and actually date one another.
Justin was a major douchebag. The kind of guy that got off on overpowering women any way he could. The fact that he didn't care made things worse. I'm glad Cole, Evan and Blake handed him his ass. He deserved it.
This was a great read. Quick for one sitting. I recommend this book for sure.
received this from Netgalley and the publisher in exchange for an honest review
also I did NOT know this was part of a series because the blurb on Netgalley said stand alone
I guess I'll briefly mention that this book is borderline stand alone. It is the last book I believe of a series of "stand alone's" so I was sort of spoiled on the other stories, I'm sure there is more to the books but now I know what the end game is so take what you will with that before reading.
Alright! This book is about Casey who is about to go on a joint bachelor/bachelorette cruise where her ex boyfriend is going to be attending.
This started out as typical new adult drama but it did take a more serious turn and what it means to consent towards the end.
As far as characters I enjoyed reading about them, Casey has a nice group of friends. Also Cole's brothers each had different personality's which is nice to see. Sometimes with new adult side characters can blend together.
But... As for Casey and Cole, I'm not sold on their relationship. I get that they were together and both of them never really did relationships, but all you ever read was about how hot each other was never really anything else. I just wish there was a little bit more.
This was an enjoyable quick read. I would have liked to read the other ones first because the writing was easy to enjoy, I feel a little spoiled so I wont sadly.
A feel-good romance about forgiveness and second chances. If you are looking for an independent female protagonist, and a strong, swoony leading man, Casey and Cole of The Ex Trials by Heather Topham Wood will likely fit the bill. There is a nice subplot in the story which gives it more meat. Although the secret Casey is keeping is easy to figure out, there’s enough tension to keep readers flipping through pages to get to the end. As far as mechanics go, there were some issues, such as typos, wrong word usage, and awkward wording. And there were several formatting problems, but I reviewed an ARC. Formatting (and possibly editing) issues will likely be corrected in the final copy. Bottom line: The Ex Trials is a nice romance about two people finding their way back to one another. There isn't a cliffhanger and the HEA is nicely wrapped up by the epilogue. If you're looking for a fun beach read this summer, give it a try.
This is a contemporary romance set in the "Falling for Autumn" series, altough it can be read (and I've read it) as a standalone novel. It's the story of Casey and Cole. She used to be a party girl until she met Cole, but their relationship failed because, apparently, she cheated on him with some football player. Cole is a bass player with his band, Trojan Jedi. When the novel starts, they've been apart for some time, but meet again for Autumn's bachelorette party-cruise. So this is a novel about what happens when Casey sees her ex again... why did she cheat on him, when she loved him so dearly, when they seemed to be meant for each other? The story unfolds as Casey discovers the truth about that night, and deals with the consequences. The author shows very well the evolution of this character. A very good read for the romance fans. I received the book for free through Goodreads First Reads.
I found the writing so gripping that I practically read this story in just one sitting. I enjoyed the way the story flowed, the present and past colliding, as the mystery surrounding Cole and Casey's break-up was slowly pieced together.
These two were both in a world of hurt. They were miserable without each other and that really came across in the writing, I could feel their heartbreak and connect with the characters easily. I particularly felt proud of Casey and her journey-she came to some major realizations that put her life in perspective and made her a stronger woman in the process.
I enjoyed getting to know the other characters in this story too. This is one close-knit group of friends and I enjoyed spending time with them. This is the first book I've read from this author but it definitely won't be my last!
I got this book from net gallery for an honest review.
3.5 stars
I enjoyed the book and the narrative was interesting.
I got into the book quite quickly in the beginning but I found it dragged on in places.
The chemistry between Cassie and Cole is intense but it comes across more like lust than love. Cassie is quite a complex character: one who tries to hide her insecurities and keeps her walls up so no one can truly know the real Cassie. I have to admit, there were times in the book that I got annoyed with Cassie. For me, the way the book's written, I felt like i was literally in Cassie's head from beginning to end - sometimes it was too much. It would have been nice to have Cole's perspective because I think that would have helped balance the book as well give you an insight into his character.
I liked the narrative and the setting was definitely unique.
Casey Silvers is going on a cruise for her best friend, Autumn's, bachelorette party and so are her troubles. 6 months after breaking if off with Cole Caldwell she'll be stuck seeing him as he celebrates with the bachelor. Tension builds with their first encounter and then they can no longer resist their pull to each other. They try to amend their relationship but Casey's bottled up emotions and anger with her past create more hurdles for them.
This is part of Wood's series, which I was not aware of when reading. I enjoyed the group of friends and the way watched out for each other. I was not engaged in Casey's world, a lot of self-reflection and former partying in her life. The book deals with some heavy issues and perhaps younger readers may find this more relatable.
I received a copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was the first book I've read by this author. I will have to go back and read the other books of this series! I loved these characters. Casey and Cole were dating and Casey cheated on Cole and they broke up. However, things aren't always what they seem. When they see each other 6 months later, the flame still burns hot and Cole wants to give Casey another chance.
This book deals with a subject that is a touchy subject for a lot of people. It's something that is out there and women need to be very aware of it. I was glad that the author chose to put it in the book. I loved Casey's strength and Cole's vulnerability. Their friends were a great crew too. They all seem to balance each other out. They have all had their fair share of hard times. I was glad to see Casey and Cole weather the storm and come out of it stronger. I really enjoyed this book.
I admit I was a little lost, having not read the other books in this series. I thought I could catch up to speed, but I think I should have read the other books first to get the back story of everyone of the characters in the book.
Casey Silvers and Cole Caldwell used to date. Now they are forced to go on a cruise for a bachelor/ bachelorette party for the best friends . Having to be in the same place is hard for the former couple, since they both still have feelings for each other and won't admit it.
Casey is hiding the real reason the couple broke up. I didn't see the reason coming.
Can Casey and Cole work out the past to have a future ??
ARC provided by Netgalley in exchange for a honest review.
This book took me by suprise with it's interisting storyline and complex and emotional characters. The author was able to pull me right in to the book and become invested in the characters so much that I can't wait to go and start this series from the beginning.
This book is fast paced and explosive with the chemistry between Casey and Cole skyrocketting of the charts. Be prepared to be teased tested and out of control with this sizzling romance that makes you want to laugh and cry but most of all will make you not want it to end.
Heather Topham Wood is an author who gives you all the romance, emotions you need but then tops it off with a huge unsuspecting punch of a message and more feels. I have long been a quiet admirer of her work having only read one other book by her before but this one is equally as good. A romance story about two people who very much have feelings still for each other but life, love and the world can get in the way first and second time round. Sexual tension abounds between the main characters and i like this for a change, instead of the wham bam thank you man you can read quite often, it makes the story and feelings more powerful. A very good story.
