After a dishonorable discharge from the military on trumped-up charges, all Ben wanted to do was stay under the radar and be left alone. Someone with his talents and training is not soon forgotten or left alone. Ten months of peace and quiet are about to come to an end, starting with a bar fight and a visit from a special operations officer with orders to bring him back into the fold. He swore he would never go back but when the opportunity came knocking in the form of a beautiful commanding officer he didn't think twice about signing up. With a slight twist, this time he would do things his way. Friend or foe they are all the same to him.
**Warning** This book contains adult situations, violence to aliens and humans alike and foul language.
This is another space opera with another over-amped soldier. The story starts out ok with superman (aka Reaper) beating up on the locals but eventually graduating into hand to hand (or sword to mandible?) free for all's with humans, flesh eating aliens to intelligent insects (Star Ship Troopers), collecting an assortment of horny woman, starships and fancy weaponry.
Overall, I would recommend this novel to those looking for a simplistic SF war story. Kudos to Mr Wright for sticking it through to write an additional two novels on the same theme. Mr Reaper will probably become the "God King" of the human race., but I for one may never know.
Here is the deal some who have read this might not tell you. This book is not meant to be a realistic take on military sci fi. This is more a Flash Gordon type of over the top hero being able to save the day. And this book does that in spades. So if you thinking about something in the military sci fi genre that needs to be realistic.. you maynot like this book.
Why must every woman was want to sleep with him. Nobody in his elite team can stand up to him in combat, even when its three or more to one. Bullshit, if he is so good why does he need a team. I kept hoping it would get better but no such luck. Another author I will know to avoid in the future.
So Ben is totally perfect. He joins the military, which is apparently made up of hot women that all want to sleep with him because he's so dreamy. He sleeps with his commanding officer, but it's ok because he's perfect. He tortures and murders some prisoners, but everyone's ok with it and still wants to sleep with him because he's perfect. Then he steals a bunch of stuff and threatens to kill any of the ships crew that rats him out for any of this, but it's ok because he's so dreamy and perfect.
Also Ben, the local mechanic, happens to have been training in the martial arts all his life, is the perfect warrior, is the perfect strategist, can over rule is superiors while insulting fellow officers (who end up just wanting to sleep with him), etc.
Then I stopped reading to look for a good book.
I bet the intel officer they were on the way to rescue will want to sleep with him once they meet.
It is sad that so many grammatical mistakes slipped by the editors. Or is it possible the author has no clue about technical balcony? A minor example of lame is using the word accommodations when clearly the context calls for commendations. The most irritating errors though we're the repeated ( in excess of seven times) use of a instead of an. One does not say: He is a artist. One says: He is an artist. Yowie Kazowie! In any case, there are lots of retarded mistakes similarly scattered throughout the book. I liked the book though so I am willing to forgive much. I am merely mystified. Why make such basic mistakes when they are so easily avoidable?
Okay, I understand the distracts that don't like the "Mr Perfect/Mr Ladies Man" part of this story...but I enjoyed the irreverent attitude toward authority and the occasional humorous moments. I hope future books will be less of "every teenage male's fantasy," but, that aside, I enjoyed the story and look forward to future books.
Admittedly, the beginning was a touch slow and it took me a bit to get through it, but it set up some of the characters and got the story moving. Once the introductions were complete, the story moved on at a fair pace.
I really enjoyed the MC and a few of the supporting characters. I enjoyed the decisions made but mostly the reasons behind them. I feel the story shows a great contrast between a good person with the means to accomplish things and various "governing" bodies that control and direct others (and got their personal interests can affect decisions). Fortunately, the story never got too political, just some fun and occasionally pointed topics.
The main reason I'm dropping a star is the number of grammar and formating mistakes. Not so much an issue of which "there" to use or to vs too, but more commas, sentence structure, etc. There were enough hiccups to warrant the star drop, I felt.
All in all a fantastic story and I'm certainly looking forward to the next.
Go with Ben on his crazy adventures of all around badassery along with his super jealous and bi-polar girlfriend. Ben, the love child of Chuckita Norris and Bruce Lee gets picked up by a super secret military group to go do......... You know, I have no damn clue what he supposed to be doing other than kicking ass and taking names. Did I mention he has magical powers? Magical powers you say? Does he have some cool Fireball power? Perhaps he can throw ice spears out of his hand? You would be incorrect. All of Ben's magic is located in his pants. Nearly everything with a vagina throws themselves at his magic wand from the get go. His just met girlfriend is already thinking love after 3 very short encounters. The book still manages to stay entertaining despite being somewhat ridiculous at times. If you just want have a fun ride with not a lot of complexity to it then this is the book for you.
Meet reaper, a god made flesh. All decisions he makes are correct. Expert fighter, most successful diplomat ever and even dabbles in designing superior body armors. Women find him irresistible. All of them, regardless of their initial impression, rank or if they are the same species.
Normally I have a high tolerance for male power fantasies, but this is just silly. Not sure if the author includes so many women in command just for the MC to impress or it was some attempt at equality. Seems to backfire dramatically though as the women in the book are emotional, irrational and generally unfit for command.
The author appears to have spent too much time with video games because the dialog, actions, and judgement calls outlined have the presentation of a adrenal ridden testosterone flooded teenage male. Occasionally marked with comments that are comical, the overall text is forgettable.
I found this book and decided to read a few pages, but then I couldn't put it down. Love the characters and the way everything flowed together. Look forward to another good read.
Very good, great story and characters but sometimes is too fast, too goody goody not believable at time's. Otherwise very good and bought the second book.
This was a good read the action was just right not too much and not too little . The storyline is going very well . Going to get book 2 and see how it goes.
The story line is really good with strong characters, who are a little too strong at times, and frequent action. The politics involved between species who share borders is a little weak and could stand to be fleshed out more. The personal relationships are kind of quick and also weakly described. I think the book could stand some more editing but it's all together a great story and I am going to buy the next one too.
This book is Outstanding. It's captivating from the very first chapter. The Reaper is absolutely Amazing. He operates from a moral perspective that is in no way ambiguous and that I find extremely refreshing.
He was pushed off his horsey, hard. Ben's not taking that path this time, just to be ambushed again, no Sir! You could label Ben a Alpha male and you would be right. He's most women's dream boat or stud muffin with extra butter. Some men will challenge his leadership until the very end, but most men are willing to follow his lead once they get to know him. So read on about a man with unlimited life skills. He's an artist of survival. He's a Steven Seagal, a 007, a punisher of epic proportion and he gets the women too, something about him awakens a woman's desire to get really close to him. A past military General familiar with Ben's unorthodox ways needs him back in the game. For personal reasons Ben agrees to play, but not by the rules governed by the military. Read this book and maybe the entire series if you like military drama where you'll find a love hate relationship with just a bit of steamy yoga exercise. A lot of coffee drank, food eaten and some alcohol consumed. Battles are won with a few losses. Ben tows and holds the line like a Alpha trooper on steroids.
Ben was a marine. Unfortunately his style was not always appreciated, but he got the job done. He even saved his commanding officer, who repaid him by setting him up on a drug charge that got him kicked out of the Marines. So he settled on a nice agricultural world. Until the Marines send one of their own back to get him to come back. After he agrees he leaves a trail of bodies behind, those that wanted to kill him but never got the chance. When he finally meets a new species and fights side by side with them, they are so impressed with him that he is given gifts from their Emperor, one of which is a space ship. One that Military Intelligence wants. So Ben and a small group of Marines resign their commissions and go out on their own to start a company of their own and just live a normal life. If the universe will allow him.
Really loved this book...wish I would have read slower...over too fast and now waiting on the next one. Perfect mix of action and adventure and for me really liked that there is a lot of the action "on location" as I am not really into the space opera or multi universe themes where they jump to different places all the time and keeping track of where they are at a particular time and place. The main character being more of a anti-hero in the aspect of not playing by "stupid" rules that had him screwed the first time. Ben is the type that if you cross him or his people he just kicks ass eliminates them...kind of a Conan the Barbarian in space. Look forward to reading future offerings from this author.
The premise is good. Good guys against the bad. Strong guys, strong women, fights, aliens, space ships. What the story lacks is editing and consistency. The mind to mind communication is sometimes italicized some times not. Situations occasionally are rushed. It almost seems like the author made notes but never went back to finish the writing. Communications between characters are inconsistent. Sometimes instantly even though they are astronomical distances apart. But the actions and characters are fun. The story moves at a good pace and you won't be bored. On to the next chronicle of the Reaper.
Typically I don't do reviews . However this wonderful book is worth a few of . Tim's support this author and hope you do too my simple words . The story very well crafted , the character development is superb and the ending was terrific. I hate cliffhangers . I couldn't put this book down and I look forward eagerly to the this authors future works. I intend to continue supporting this author and hope you will too...
Mr Wright is a great author. Chronicles of Benjamin Jamison is a great read with some adult content. The book is an exciting read from the first to the last page. The characters are full bodied and well articulated. The story and plot are solid with plenty of action to satisfy anyone. I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys plenty of battle action and adult humor.
Right off I'll tell you I like this hero. He's a John Wayne type of guy. Walk quietly but get the job done. It's a space opera type of book. I once tried to explain to a friend that you can compare this to a good western read. You have your hero and villains. Your sidekick and a town or worlds to save. It's a good read has some bad grammar in a few places bit I can live with that for a good story. I'll be there for book two.
Typical space opera, nothing really special, but a good story keeping you turning the pages doesn't have to be anything special or out of the ordinary. Good characters, dialogue, action, and a storyline that keeps you interested, can't really ask for anything more. Finished this and am getting the second one, no cliffhanger or abrupt ending, always appreciate a full complete story, with a beginning and actual ending, looking forward to reading the next one.
I am attempting to understand how so many stories here have so many mistakes in grammar, punctuation and so on. Is this a plot? This Reaper story was good. The Ensign was a ringer if there ever was one. The Door Into Summer, Ringworld and many others have honor as a back ground theme, and this story has it, too. So, those without honor are no better than animals. LJW
