Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859 - 1930) was historicus, atleet, spiritist, oorlogscorrespondent maar bovenal schrijver. Doyle schiep met Sherlock Holmes het karakter van de beroemdste en meest vernuftige detective aller tijden. De spanning, de intriges en de vaart waarmee de verhalen worden verteld, hebben niets aan zeggingskracht ingeboet.

About the author

Sir Arthur Ignatius Conan Doyle was a Scottish writer and physician. He created the character Sherlock Holmes in 1887 for A Study in Scarlet, the first of four novels and fifty-six short stories about Holmes and Dr. Watson. The Sherlock Holmes stories are milestones in the field of crime fiction.

Doyle was a prolific writer. In addition to the Holmes stories, his works include fantasy and science fiction stories about Professor Challenger, and humorous stories about the Napoleonic soldier Brigadier Gerard, as well as plays, romances, poetry, non-fiction, and historical novels. One of Doyle's early short stories, "J. Habakuk Jephson's Statement" (1884), helped to popularise the mystery of the brigantine Mary Celeste, found drifting at sea with no crew member aboard.

Hoewel ik al talloze hervertellingen van het beroemde Sherlock Holmes verhaal heb gelezen, heb ik nooit het origineel gelezen. Rainbox to the rescue! Ik had dit boek willen lezen voor we naar het Sherlock Holmes museum in Londen gingen, maar helaas was het boek pas bij de boekwinkel toen ik al in de trein zat. Gelukkig kon ik afgelopen weekend, met alle herinneringen aan 221b Baker Street, eindelijk beginnen!

Dit boek is overduidelijk een boek van zijn tijd en past heel goed naast de boeken van Agatha Christie. Het verhaal is behoorlijk rechtlijnig. Er is een moord of mysterie en het is aan Sherlock Holmes om het op te lossen. Holmes ziet allerlei aanwijzingen die andere mensen over het hoofd zien en puzzel op die manier alles aan elkaar! Ik vond het wel enorm tof dat we de uiteindelijke oplossing vaak ook nog echt te lezen kregen vanuit de dader. Het maakte het enorm makkelijk om mee te leven en de motieven te begrijpen.

Ik heb nu al zin om aan het tweede deel te beginnen! En nog meer hervertellingen te lezen!

When John Watson comes back from the war, he's ill, wounded and lacks a purpose in his life. Then he meets Sherlock Holmes, a eccentric, smart and observant man, who is also very aware of his smartness. When Watson finds out about Holmes his work, he's dragged into them right away...
There has been a murder and Scotland Yard needs Sherlock's advise.

I was surprised how fast I read this book, considered it is written in 1887, it was a very easy read (might have something to do with reading it in my mother tongue). The book is fast paced and it allows you (to a certain degree) to think for yourself and put the pieces together.

I was a bit confused halfway through the book since the plot seemed to take a unrelated turn, but soon enough I could link the pieces together and it all began to make sense again.

It was a nice and easy read, but to me it lacked a bit of character development, which I always love in books. Sherlock was also different than I expected him to be, because he's so different in the series and movies I've watched. In the books he's a bit more easy going and just nice? Am I the only one who feels this way?!

Sherlock Holmes. Wie kent hem niet? Het bekende personage van de schrijver A.C. Doyle die eind 19e eeuw het levenslicht zag. Inmiddels is er een nieuwe pocketeditie verschenen. In deze pocketeditie zijn meerdere verhalen van Sherlock Holmes gecombineerd. De Gloria Scott en Het Musgraveritueel zijn twee korte verhalen die eerder zijn verschenen als memoires. Een studie in rood is een roman.

Door de memoires als inleiding te gebruiken, leer je al snel het eigenaardige karakter van Sherlock Holmes kennen. Door de vlotte pen word je vrijwel direct ondergedompeld in de denkwijze van Holmes. Het zijn twee prachtige ‘appetizers’ alvorens je je kan storten op ‘Een studie in rood’. Dit verhaal begint bij het begin; het moment dat Dr. Watson en Sherlock Holmes elkaar ontmoeten. Al snel raken ze verstrikt in hun eerste zaak; een vermoorde man wordt gevonden in een leegstand huis. De politie komt geen steek verder en vraagt hulp van bijzondere logica van Holmes.

Hoewel het verhaal al eind 19e eeuw aan het papier is toevertrouwd, was ik verrast over het gemak waarmee ik door het verhaal heen kwam. Het voelt alsof je met een tijdmachine teruggaat naar die tijd, zo levendig is het beschreven. De logica van het deduceren is de kracht van Holmes en als lezer word je daarin goed meegenomen. Het lijkt alsof je op sommige momenten zelf in het hoofd van Holmes zit; ook al wordt een deel van het verhaal verteld vanuit het perspectief van Watson.

Het eerste deel eindigt met de arrestatie van de dader. Al komt dat als lezer wat verwarrend over omdat je – ondanks de zorgvuldige beschrijving van het onderzoek – toch wat logische elementen over het hoofd hebt gezien. Wat het verhaal bijzonder maakt is dat je in het tweede deel volledig wordt teruggeworpen in de tijd en de aanloop van de moord meemaakt vanuit het (alwetende) vertelperspectief van de dader. Pas dan is de puzzel compleet. Beide delen worden met elkaar verbonden door zeer goed uitgewerkte details.

Although I like the mystery-part, I find the story somewhat porely. Maybe because of the translation. Some parts of the story are simply not described like I would expect from a Sherlock Holmes novel.

This book wasn’t really the best but I did have fun with the suspense in it as when I read it at school there was many cliffhangers and suspense I couldn’t believe it
