Fred Van Lente is the New York Times-bestselling author of comics as varied as Archer & Armstrong (Harvey Award nominee, Best Series), Taskmaster, MODOK's 11, Amazing Spider-Man, Conan the Avenger, Weird Detective, and Cowboys & Aliens (upon which the 2011 movie was based), as well as the novels Ten Dead Comedians and The Con Artist.

Van Lente also specializes in entertaining readers with offbeat histories with the help of his incredibly talented artists. He has written the multiple-award winning Action Philosophers!, The Comic Book History of Comics, Action Presidents! (all drawn by Ryan Dunlavey), and The Comic Book Story of Basketball with Joe Cooper (Ten Speed September 2020).

This is a quick read, shows some of Cap's origins but doesn't give enough to really satisfy you.
The artwork is really good and of course its always nice to spend time with Captain America and Bucky.

I'm not a big reader of comics, I'll say that up front. And when I do read comics, I prefer graphic novels that compile several issues in one.That being said, I'm not sure how much weight you should give this review. I downloaded this because I love the CA movies, and it was free.

This is the first of eight issues that make up the series. It was super short, it didn't have much text, and I think it took me less than five minutes to read. I know it's the first part of a series, but I think there could have been a little bit more story.

The artwork? I'm probably not the best person to ask, but it was ok as well. Not horrible, not fantastic.

This is a comic about Captain America. It is only short with not many words and filled with artwork that I thought was very good.

I've always like Captain America after seeing the films and this is what made me interested in this free comic. But sadly there didn't seem to be any story to it. Sure you see Steve meet Bucky but other than that nothing happens. It ends on a cliffhanger that frustrated me because it left the story half told.

I would say this was aimed more at young readers and that's who I would recommend it to. This hasn't put me of Captain America, this comic just wasn't for me.

It probably helps my enjoyment of this one that I really love Captain America. It did intrigue me a bit though, and make me want to keep reading the series to find out more about the bad guy. I also liked how the origin story was intercut with the action.

I wasn't expecting much from this after the whole Cap working for Hydra fiasco last year and I only got this because it was free. I do love a bit of Marvel and decided why not? If it was shit, it was shit and I upped my reading challenge by a book.

I was amazed by this, left in wonder. Very quickly, I found myself enamoured by the action, the artwork, the story. The flashbacks of this universe were adorable and I loved them. They leave you with some unanswered questions and this was a qualm for me, but at the end of the day, they have to get you to read the comic series after #0, no?

This was great and I'd recommend it to all Marvel lovers.

A similar backstory to the MCU version of Cap, there was nothing new included in this short start. Just when the action began, the first in the series came to an end, but the artwork is vivid. Without doing any research into the remainder of the series, if it follows along the movie storyline, there really isn't much reason to continue.

I think I got the digital copy for free, so I can't complain too much. :)

Thumpin’ Start with Backstory & Action

Captain A's humble beginnings are here in flashback form as well as a current assault in progress against the enemy. Grittiness is engaging, full of courage, heart, and even friendship. The story is easy for any to follow, clear, intriguing, and fantastic artwork capstones this excellent work. I'll be on the lookout to get the full set now.

I liked it, it was short, yes but that's how these comics work! I loved how they added the flashbacks and what they did with the characters: it really feels like you see them in a different perspective.

Artwork: excellent, dialogue: on point, overall enjoyability: top-notch. As this is a prequel to the first Captain America film I think that any MCU fan would appreciate getting this comic (and the series that follows which I plan on doing when I have the opportunity). It is worth reading.

This is a short comic that sets up for the first Captain America movie. You get to see one of the reasons that Steve Rogers is so driven. You also get to see the first meeting between Steve and Bucky.

While there is nothing really wrong with this comic, it feels more like one of the teaser scenes at the end of the Marvel movies than a real story. If you have seen the movie (and if you haven't by now than you probably aren't planning on seeing it) than this will all be old information and not add to the story really.

Still, the artwork was nice. I did get it as a free download. Free is always good. Good for a quick read but not truly special.

This seemed so pointless in it's existence yet I enjoyed it. It was a pleasant 5 minutes spent I'd say. I liked the introduction of Bucky to Steve like them actually meeting. It was nice to have it depicted. And Captain America kicking ass is always fun.
