The second book in The Boots My Mother Gave Me series, Sole Sister picks up several years later, continuing the story of Harley LeBeau and her rebellious sister Katrina ‘Kat’ LeBeau.
Relocating to Nashville to be closer to Harley and Miah, Kat aspires to launch her Sole Sister fashion line. A gutsy and impromptu plan suddenly lands her on the cover of The Ville Spill—the local celebrity gossip rag—alongside country music’s latest heartthrob, giving Sole Sister the push it needs. But Kat quickly learns that not all press is good press.
Years removed from an abusive childhood and teenage pregnancy, the past that Kat never talks about continues to seep into her life and relationships. Still struggling with the images of finding her father after his suicide, Kat forges ahead, vowing to avoid past mistakes. To focus on her career and responsibilities as a single mother, she swears off the disappointments of love. The first man she ever loved, her father, broke her heart. The first boy she ever fell in love with, her daughter’s father, broke her heart.
What Kat didn’t plan on was Nashville SWAT Officer Connor Reese. She and Connor have more pulling them together than keeping them apart. Kat finds herself in familiar territory when her plan to steer clear of heartache is derailed after spending a night in his arms. Will facing her past help to secure her future? Will Connor offer her a second chance at life and love? Or will her heart break yet again?
Staying true to its predecessor, Sole Sister explores the dynamics of strength in sisterhood, the ongoing conflict and unconditional love between mother and daughter, and the courage to become more than one’s past.
Brooklyn's first novel, The Boots My Mother Gave Me, has an original music soundtrack, making for a unique Audible experience. Out of Boots grew a platform where it was her honor to serve as a guest speaker with a focus on awareness and prevention of domestic violence and suicide.
She holds an M.A. in Communication, and a B.S. in both Nursing and Animal Science.
Sole Sister is book 2 of The Boots My Mother Gave Me series. If you have not yet read book 1, The Boots My Mother Gave Me I highly recommend you read it before this one.
Sole Sister took me on a journey of two sisters who were always there for each in good times and bad. It takes place 7 years after the ending of The Boots My Mother Gave Me.
This story is about two sisters who were different in so many ways but were ALWAYS there to help and support each other. These two went through a bad childhood with an abusive and alcoholic father. It’s been 8 years since he took his life by blowing a hole through his chest with a shotgun. The ramifications stemming from their childhood still effects them both, just in different ways. This story is about family, love, acceptance, understanding, strength, heartache, fear and so much more.
At page one I had a huge smile that stayed on my face for quite a while. I was excited to find out where they’re lives would take them. There were many of fun times and sad times, I laughed I cried and I feared what some of the outcomes would bring them.
Harley already had Jeremiah but Kat was not ready to trust anyone enough to have a relationship at this point in her life. The two men who she loved most, let her down and she did not want to go through that again. In walks Connor, a very sexy man that NEEDS Kat in so many ways. It takes a while for Kat and Connor to finally connect, and through this there are many obstacles in their way.
I loved reading how Harley and Jeremiah dealt with several issues that pop up during this read. I loved how Harley and Kat were always there to help each other out and give sound advice to each other. I LOVED how Kat and Connor were there for each other. I loved how Kat learned through her sister and Jeremiah how to handle her teenage daughter Megan. I was VERY invested in this story, the twists and turns and ALL of the characters.
There was just one thing that bugged me, sometimes there was just too much thinking going on. At times I felt it was unnecessary and it did drag for me in a few spots. Despite that, I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED IT!
The ending was WONDERFUL! Everyone is happy and Harley and Kat finally face all their childhood issues ending this book in the best possible way.
Overall I feel this series was an epic read, it dealt with so many bumps in the road of life. I know this story will be in my mind for days to come.
Now that this series is concluded, I highly recommend it to all romance readers who love to read a romance series that is truly off the beating path and nothing like you’ve ever read before.
“I think the things we desire the most in life are the things that were withheld from us. The things we never got from the one person we wanted them from the most.”
Sole Sisters is the sequel to The Boots My Mother Gave Me which was an absolute five star read for me. I fell in love with all the characters, the sentiments and the beauty and was so excited to read the sequel. I’d highly recommend reading this series in order to get the full enjoyment as well as meet all the characters from their beginnings. Brooklyn James is a brilliant Author and her characters are so incredibly real and their story so emotional. You will LOVE The Boots My Mother Gave Me and you will revel in Sole Sisters!
“The demons don’t care if it’s light or dark, do they?”
“You have them too?”
In Sole Sister we catch up with everyone years down the line and much has changed for our Kit-Kat as well as Harley and Miah. Harley is now a sought after song writer, Miah a SWAT officer and Kat is an up and coming designer. Their bond is incredibly strong and both are still trying to be at peace with their abusive childhood and old insecurities; Kat in particular is still having recurring nightmares about her Father.
“You ever wish you had it to do all over again? With someone you could count on?”
“As sure as I breathe.”
Kat’s kismet makes a surprising and much deserved entrance when the gorgeous SWAT Officer Connor Reese enters her life. A man who truly sees Kat and whose life mirrors hers in some respects. Kat’s scared, in fact she’s petrified as her track record hasn’t been great, heart-break is a devastating feeling. Her priority is her teenage daughter as well as her own fragile heart. This makes her reluctant to try her hand at a second chance at love. Connor’s not having any of that though and their relationship was really quite beautiful, mature and inspirational. Whilst I did struggle at times as I found that we didn’t get enough detail – instead there seemed to be an over emphasis on Kat’s inner musing and theorising – it did feel real and believable.
“You want to be fearless?”
“I do. I really do.”
“Let’s be fearless, Kit-Kat.”
Sole Sister is a beautiful, sweet, emotional, heart-warming and hopeful story. There’s so many real to life messages in there, albeit fiction. It shows strength, unconditional love and that trusting your heart and letting people in despite fears of being hurt can be truly beautiful. A really enjoyable read and a series I highly recommend.
‘You’re everything I’ve ever dreamed of.’

I think I really did need to read book one first before this one as I have lost a lot of the story and had to pick it up from another angle, so I advise you read book 1 [unlike me]
Kat never talks about her abusive past, its far too painful. And her pregnancy.
She's moved to Nashville for reasons and also to advance her fashion carer. The trouble is, she finds her inline for some publicity, this makes her front cover of the Ville Spill. Its a local gossip rag. Kat then learns that not all publicity is good publicity.
Kat's Father committed suicide. Her little girl's Daddy broke her heart.
Kat doesn't want or need her heart broken again so she focuses all her attention on her daughter and works hard to make a good life for them both.
Forgiveness. That word is around in this book. Holding onto grudges and past can be damning and damaging as Kat finds out.
My Thoughts
I found this a well written read and could follow it well, all but for the parts I missed out on in book 1.
Kat's past is in book 1 which I feel would have made me understand her more, get to know her more. But this didn't over ride my concept of the book and how well written it was. Its a lovely read which I enjoyed very much.
“Forgiveness - it’s so elusive, isn’t it. Felt so strongly one moment, only to wane out of reach the next. But to not forgive, to hold onto that condemnation, it seeps into every aspect of our life, our being like a noxious gas through the crack of a door, somehow sabotaging forward progression, crippling all that is and can’t be good.”
5 emotional stars. This book is so beautiful and beautifully written. The characters are so well written and the story flows so well. It’s hard to pull yourself away from the book once you start.

First of all you have to read book one in order to read this book, it’s a continuation from book one. The book has a roller coaster ride of events, you have to hang on. It’s emotional and uplifting all at the same time. The book starts with Katrina and her needing to decide what she wants to do with her life. After being abused for years, she’s now a shell of her previous self. But in order to succeed with her Sole Sister fashion line, she has to figure out how to get back to herself. This book was amazing and so beautiful. I highly recommend it!!!

Sole Sister (2015), the second installment to The Boots My Mother Gave Me, is about finding forgiveness after two sisters endure the loss of their father to suicide. In The Boots My Mother Gave Me (2010) Harley LeBeau leaves Georgia, Pennsylvania in search of herself. In the midst of chasing her dream of becoming a singer she falls in love with, neighbor boy, Jeremiah 'Miah' Johnson, elopes to Hawaii, and gives birth to twins, Gia and Jackson, all with her almond intact and with Charlene the Chevelle barrelling through on auto pilot.
Sole Sister is the continuation of Harley's life as a daughter, sister, aunt, mother, wife, and singer/songwriter told from Kat's, point of view. Kat learns to do life with a teenage daughter while giving entrepreneurship the good ol' college try in lifting her business off the ground. Of course, Sole Sister wouldn't be a Brooklyn James kind of read without a love story and with some hot and steamy romance.
James takes her readers to that place of vulnerability that gives the quintessential meaning to family, career, and love while finding the balance to make each work independently and simultaneously. If you're a single woman in search of her soulmate, you need to read this book. If you're a childless woman wanting/needing children, you need to read this book. If you're a teenage girl, you need to read this book. And if you're a grammy, you need to read this book. Brooklyn James does a terrific job of bridging the gap of three generations of sisterhood.
I found myself angry, frustrated, happy, sad, and irritated. I also found myself laughing out loud with purpose. I was excited for new found opportunity, yet angry at haters hating on success. I was giddy with Harley's and Kat's sisterly love and playfulness. No one can quite tell Harley to shut to her candy hole quite like Kat. I was also sad to experience the roaring anger of oppressing the feelings of their father's suicide, but relieved when forging forgiveness.
James has the uncanny ability to pull her readers through a compelling story while capturing intense visualizations with intention. She keeps it genuine and real. It's a page-turner to boot.
Sole Sister is the heart and soul of The Boots My Mother Gave Me.
In the first book The Boots My Mother Gave me , we meet sisters Harley and Kat . The first book focused on how Harley was the subject of abuse from her father and introduces us to the boy who saved her Jeremiah and her prized possession from Benny - her first car "Charlene". In Sole Sister , many years have passed and Harley is married to Jeremiah and has children and of course her car Charlene is still going solid . Harley is now a songwriter and musician and her sister Kat designs boots inspired by of course their mother's love of cowboy boots. This book starts with the sisters headed to Nashville where Harley has been given the opportunity to grow her music career and Jeremiah - has a spot in the Nashville SWAT team and Kat has decided to open her own shop called Sole Sister. As we all know books must have a conflict point and in Sole Sister it comes the day after the music awards where Harley should be celebrating her win for new Songwriter on the scene but instead she is forced into a situation to try and save her marriage as the paparazzi caught a picture of the welcome kiss by Shooter - a new singer on the block and blown it out of proportion. Is her career worth throwing her marriage and children away for ? Can Harley have both pieces of the pie or will she discover that sometimes for the journey of happiness to work , sacrifices must be made in order to save the ones you love ? For Kat, though the publicity has been great for her as she is being inudated with calls from people wanting boots designed, also a new love interest in the form of an Aussie SWAT team member seems to be looming on the horizon for Kat. Will the sisters finally get the happiness that they deserve and long overdue or will they discover that fame and fortune isn't what it is cracked up to be and nothing matters if you don't have the love and support of family behind you.
Find out in Brooklyn James's new book "Sole Sister".
Katrina “Kat” LeBeau is packing up to move her and her daughter Megan to Nashville so they can be closer to Kat’s sister Harley LeBeau-Johnson and her family. Kat has been trying to rewrite her life, and this seems like the perfect opportunity.
Harley is married with two children and making a name for herself in the music world. Kat has plans of her own with “Soul Sister”, where she designs custom boots. The girls find themselves on the cover of a local rag, The Ville Spill, which propels them into the celebrity gossip spotlight. Though Kat’s intentions were good, the publicity could end up destroying Harley’s marriage while boosting the girls’ careers.
As a single mother, Kat had no plans to get involved with another man, until she meets SWAT officer Connor Reese. He is a single father, and they just seem to click immediately. As the prior men in her life let her down, will Kat be able to trust Connor enough to let him in to her heart and life?
This book is the sequel to James’s debut, The Boots My Mother Gave Me, taking place seven years after the first book. While there is some background information included throughout this story, it is definitely recommended to read the books in order. Doing so allows the reader to follow the sisters through the good and bad times, as well as understand and appreciate the differences and how they deal with their past (which included an abusive and alcoholic father).
This is a compelling tale that bridges the generations. It showcases the bonds of sisterhood, forgiveness, love, and acceptance of the fact that no one is fully defined by the past. As is typical of James’s other books, there are also some steamy romance scenes. James writes in a way that leaves the reader caring about the characters and the outcome of the story.
Disclaimer: I received a free copy of this book from the author in exchange for an honest review.
How long I have waited for this book, and how worth the wait it was! Harley’s story in ‘The Boots My Mother Gave Me’ was one of the most intense and incredible journeys I have ever had the pleasure of reading, and I became so attached to the LeBeau girls and their loves and losses, that the chance to see Kat’s life after all the pain inflicted on her, was something very important to me.
From the word go, ‘Sole Sister’ grabbed me into the world of Kat and Harley LeBeau and I felt like I’d never left! Kat’s journey into the fashion design business, and how Harley’s fame as a songwriter catapults Kat’s name into the media, was great fun. The loving, easy-going, yet still definitely sibling-like relationship between the two was as special in this book as in its predecessor!
Connor was the perfect hero to Kat’s heroine, and I adored their relationship. The time jump at the beginning of the book made me all the more eager to see the two get together as sparks flew from the pages whenever they came across each other. The way that Brooklyn James identified the challenges of single parents dating whilst trying to keep their children’s happiness as a priority was perfectly done, and I really felt the strength of a familial bond, not by blood, but by shared love and affection.
The subject of Kat’s past-abuse, from both her father, and ex-boyfriend are very much key issues in this book, and it made for some very emotional reading to see how desperately Kat wants to save her daughter from being abused as she was. As with in ‘Boots’, in ‘Sole Sister’, this issue is detailed with a perfect balance of sad reality, and sensitivity.
With the added bonus of cameos (and even a whole scene to themselves!) of Harley and Miah with their family, ‘Sole Sister’ was everything I hoped it would be, and it was SO worth the wait!
Big thanks to Brooklyn and Charlotte for an ARC copy for review.
I just loved Kat and Connor's story. I was so exited when I found out that Brooklyn was giving Harley's young sister, Kat her own book. Just like her older sister, I wanted Kat and her daughter, Megan to get their happily ever after, especially with everything that they went through in the past. These girls deserve the best.
It's a story of new beginnings, opening your heart to love again, letting to of the past and finding unexpected and true happiness. Our main character Kat is a strong, independent, successful woman and a wonderful mother to her daughter. She has definitely grown so much from the first book. Then there is Connor, a fellow member of SWAT team, who works with Micah Johnson. He handsome, has an Australian accent, loving, protective, and great father to his son. With a chance meeting between Kat and Connor there is definite attraction.
The relationship they had was nice and slow building, but was boy was it passionate. They connected so well, especially when it to their past relationships and childhood home life's. Fate has a way of bringing people together and it's aligning the stars for this couple. Of course I loved seeing Harley, Micah and their kids, as well as Kat and Harley's mother. The ending was very sweet and I couldn't be happier with how things turned out for Kat, Connor and their family.
Sole Sister is the sequel to The Boots My Mother Gave Me. If you haven't read the first book, do so now. It's an amazing story that has ranked in the Top 100 on two Kindle lists - Coming of Age and Women's Fiction and was named an Amazon Breakthrough Novel Award Quarterfinalist. It even has a soundtrack, penned and performed by the author. The book is both heartbreaking (domestic abuse threatens to destroy an entire family) and uplifting (the resilience of the main character, Harley, whose spirit can't be broken). The second book opens as Katrina (Harley's younger sister) finds herself at a crossroad in her life. The years of abuse have taken their toll on her. Katrina needs that one big push to make her dreams a reality. She will need to dig deep inside herself if she is to succeed with her Sole Sister fashion line. Together with the strong women in her life (her sister, her daughter, her mother), Katrina must confront her worst fears as she struggles to overcome a past that threatens destroy her.
I did not read the first book in this series, but that was totally okay. Not only did I feel like I got little bits and pieces from the first story, but this book is fantastic as a stand alone anyway. (And now I really want to read The Boots My Mother Gave Me.)
I won’t lie. When I first started reading this story, I wasn’t sure I was going to like it. I thought something like this: “Here we go again. Another gorgeous foreigner in the US, with a hot accent. And a woman who was a little wild and crazy in her younger years, trying to figure out how to be an adult.” (Think single mom who had a baby at seventeen.) But if that’s how you’re feeling when you first start reading Kat’s story, KEEP. READING. This is by NO means a stereotypical contemporary adult romance.
Although the love story between Kat and Connor is definitely a big part of Sole Sister, there is WAY more to Kat’s story than that. The way the author weaves the bonds of sisterhood, the relationship between a mother and daughter, a history of abusive men, and the opportunity to trust oneself and take a chance with ‘the right guy’ was absolutely breathtaking. I related to this story on so many levels, it was almost painful to read at some points, because I kept thinking about many of the different characters, “That’s me!” And it wasn’t always the pretty and good things in their lives and personalities that I was relating to.
This book made me cry on multiple occasions. But I also laughed out loud, squealed with happiness, and worried my fingernails right along with the characters. Just read it. PLEASE! You won’t regret it. Your Not-So-Anonymous Book Junkie
Sole Sister is the sequel of The Boots My Mother Gave Me and even if I was told that it could be perfectly read as a stand-alone I have to admit that I didn't feel that way. There's a lot of background information that I was missing from Kat and her sister's, Harley, difficult up bringing that I think was quite important to easily follow the new story and understand them ever. I mean, the author gives you quite a lot of information to fill the blanks and I did not feel lost reading it but the general feeling I got is that I would have enjoyed the book a lot more if I had read the first book first.
Apart from that, I liked the book, especially Cat and her relationship with Connor. He really was book boyfriend material, gorgeous, noble, a good father and such a gentleman. He was all Cat deserved.
The story is really full of drama and twists and turns. For a moment there I even thought it was a bit too much. But it's true that the book had a depth I was not expecting but enjoyed. It handles very serious topics with care and respect and it was really interesting to read about Cat facing her demons and how the author wrapped it all up.
Harley, Cat's sister, and her husband Miah also play a big part in the story and I started to like them a lot. I am curious to know more about their story and I'm sure I'll pick the first book sometime soon to see exactly how they met and what they went through.
Brooklyn James is just so darn good...I don't know how she does it but she has this ability at capturing feelings and putting them on paper.
If you haven't read the first book in the series ~The Boots My Mother Gave Me~STOP Seriously you need to read it to know what this book is going to be...and she sure did not disappoint.
That being said following Kat's journey was an enjoyable ride. A bit smoother then the first book, but it had its *Wait, what?!* I liked that we had a bit of Harley and Jeremiah in this book, i find it enjoyable when a book evokes feelings of nostalgia.
I enjoy a story telling where you're invested in the characters lives and their experiences. Kat's and Connors story was such a refreshing tale. Great job yet again!
Last but not least, thankful for being part of her reading team!
I didn’t read the first book yet. But I really loved and enjoyed this story of Katrina ‘Kat’ LeBeau, she moved to Nashville to be closer to her sister and her family. Kat decided to introduce her fashion line Sole Sisters. Of course nothing can be easy. I really loved how the plot went. The author kept is going and the whole story I really couldn’t put down. Even though I hadn’t read the first book I had no problems reading this story of Kat and her daughter. Kat is a single mother, who got pregnant at a young age. Like I said there are a lot of plot twist to keep you excited about the storyline. I would of course if possible to read the first book, but this one read fine as a standalone. I did receive this book in exchange for an honest review. I really loved how the author writes and loved this story.
Kat hasn't always done things easy. Relocating to Nashville she starts her Sole Sister business. Kat didn't plan on getting involved with anyone but when Connor comes along she is pulled to him, and doesn't want to let go. When Kat finds out who Connor's ex is she wants to run away. Will Kat give in to love again or will she continue to let her past haunt her.
The love between two sisters really shows in this plot. No matter what they go through they are still there for one another. Something you barely see in today's world. So it was a nice change to escape from reality with this book. The past they each have makes you wander just when or if they overcome it. An overall great book!
I don't even have the words to describe how much I love this book! Sole Sister is the perfect follow on from The Boots My Mother Gave Me and carried on the story from Kat's viewpoint. It was great to catch up with some of my favourite characters and see where their lives have taken them. Love love love!
Great read - an excellent story about strong women and how each dealt with family distinction, loss and moving forward and beyond the past. So glad to have the sister-ties to Harley and be able to see how Miah’s and Harley story played forward with Kit-Kat. Love, love this this author! :)
