Surprises Abound In Hungry Heart

The adage, People aren't always what they seem rings true in the novel Hungry Heart. What begins as a story about Caroline and long-term boyfriend Nathan's open relationship, evolves into something much more complicated and intriguing.
Ms. Haze has written her novel in first person present tense, showing us everything through Caroline's eyes as it is happening. Very diary-like, this really worked, making me feel as if Caroline were speaking to me.

We meet Caroline on the eve of her twenty first birthday as she admits her attraction to the strange man staring at her from across the cafe. Her inner dialogue reveals her loyalty to Nathan even though he has recently taken on another girlfriend. As a matter of fact, Caroline likes Nathan's girlfriend, Rissa. Their open relationship does not mean free for all. They have rules and she respects them, just as she believes Nathan does. But Caroline hasn't been attracted to anyone other than Nathan until now so she is a bit conflicted. Until the man approaches her, introduces himself as Benedict and asks her out. He's gorgeous, sexy, and the instant chemistry is something Caroline can't resist.

I loved Benedict. He happens to own the club that Caroline and her friends frequent and has been secretly attracted to her for some time. He understands and accepts her relationship with Nathan since he himself is involved in an open relationship, albeit one that has become troubled. Not only is he sexy hot and gorgeous, he is mature (he's thirty years old), reasonable, and does everything in his power to take care of Caroline. His love for her is strong and he refuses to give up on her even when the difficulties of an open relationship take their toll on both of them.

Caroline is an only child, her affluent parents travel the globe, having left Caroline on her own since the age of seventeen when she hooked up with Nathan. They love her and trust her judgement but their lack of parenting skills has resulted in self doubt as well as self image issues. Despite the fact she gets in her own way many times, I did like her. Her thoughts and actions seemed in character for her age. I felt that Caroline's relationship with Nathan, which began at such a young age, took the place of family in many ways for her. It was easy, loving, and reliable but it in no way prepared her to deal with the depth of heartache she encounters when her world is shattered.

Bottom line...Hungry Heart is a rollercoaster. Ms. Haze slowly takes us up, up, up until we wonder where the ride is going. Suddenly we are at the very top, our breath taken away as events completely unexpected hit us and we are flying down to the end of the ride. The characters, and there are many, are interesting, their personal lives contain delicious surprises, and I enjoyed every one of them. An enjoyable novel, the writing is lovely and the story very well thought out.

Really Unexpected
When I read that this book was going to be about people in open relationships I have to admit that it was kind of a turn off. I will also admit that I had a lot of preconceived, stereotypical ideas about what I was going to be reading. I was pleasantly surprised. Caroline is in an ongoing open relationship with her boyfriend who she lives with Nathan, Nathan is dating a woman named Rissa, Caroline hasn't felt attracted to another man besides her boyfriend in a long time. Then she meets Benedict. Benedict is also in an open relationship with his partner Miranda, but hasn't found anyone else he is interested in besides Miranda, and Miranda kind of talked Benedict into the open relationship so she could date Len. Are you still with me? I know that's a handful of people to keep track of, a love... Quadrangle? Anyway keep going it's worth it, because when Caroline and Benedict get together WOW! The romance between Caroline and Benedict is sizzling hot, sparklingly electric with a real, true connection. In the spirit of honesty and openness Benedict is introduced to Nathan before the relationship begins. A mutual respect is held for openness and honesty with all of the parties involved Or is it? With so many people involved, there are bound to be problems that emerge. Will feelings get stepped on, hurt? What secrets are being hidden away? Well I've said all I am going to say without spoiling anything. Just know that while this brand of romance pushes at boundaries for some, myself included, it is a worthwhile read. Just one final note, this story involves twists and things unexpected and the ending is no exception. You will want to move on to the next book! I know I do! Can't wait to find out what happens!

This story about open relationships has forced me to push my boundaries but I am loving the ways this openness seems to allow more love and trust in for all the inter-connected relationships. Caroline encounters Benedict at a café and is attracted to him. She hasn't been attracted to anyone, other than Nathan, her boyfriend. Now, the interesting twist for me was that Caroline and Nathan have an open relationship. Nathan lives with Caroline and they are boyfriend and girlfriend but he also dates Rissa. So far, Nathan is the only one in their relationship to have a second partner. Caroline likes Benedict so she meets him at a club and introduces him to Nathan, following their rules in the relationship. Benedict is also in an open relationship with Miranda, something that she convinced him to do so she could date Len. This is Benedict's first time having another partner since they agreed to this arrangement. He is surprised by his attraction to Caroline. What follows is Caroline and Benedict's romance that is hot, sexy with a solid connection between the two individuals. Of course, when many people are involved, secrets do exist and people will inevitably get hurt. The layers combined with twists and turns deliver an amazing story that will keep you drawn in to the very end. Oh, and don't forget the incredibly erotic scenes that Violet Haze consistently delivers.

I'm rather surprised how much I enjoyed this. I generally don't like too much angst, but this stopped just shy of the too much angst line. It's not angst for angst's sake - the characters are well defined and believable, their broken-ness real, not manufactured.

There's a lot going on, and I am glad I read all three parts together. I don't think I would have liked the cliffhangers at the end of parts one and two.

I'm not going to dissect the story and give away what-all happens, you'll just have to believe that I enjoyed the story. What keeps it from getting 5 stars is mainly just personal preference. I'm not big on first person, and present tense is a tricky thing to do well. For the most part, Ms. Haze does a decent job of pulling it off, but there are occasional tense errors which jarred me out of the bubble - but the fact I was able to get in the bubble for a first person book says a lot. That doesn't often happen for me when reading first.

Not really my kind of book

I kind of enjoyed this book......like bare minimum enjoyed as this type of romance isn't for me. But the writing was good, and the characters were good. Don't let my review deter you, give it a go

Unique, incredible story

HUNGRY HEART is a serious story, going off in an unexpected direction that seriously tests the bonds between Benedict and Caroline.

Caroline and her boyfriend Nathan are in an open relationship when she meets Benedict, who captivated her. Sparks flew from their mutual attraction, and Caroline enjoys the loving attention of her two men. But when a tragedy occurs, her world is shattered and she has to learn to pick up the pieces...

Despite the characters having an open relationship, the atmosphere in the story is serious, and the open relationship being depicted here is not for titillation. Instead, it's an essential to show the kind of person Caroline is and the issues she had. Plus, this story shows how people navigate an open relationship, and the complications that might arise from it.

Caroline is a great heroine; her voice is interesting and the narration captivating. The story is told from her first person point of view. She's 21 in the story, and her actions and behavior reflect her age. She's one lucky girl for having the love of two men; how many find that in one lifetime?

Benedict, being 9 years older, is her rock, a steady presence in the ups and downs of her life. He's gorgeous, of course, but I really like Benedict for how patient and supportive he is and for just being there for her whenever she needs him.

Their chemistry together is off the charts, and there are a lot of sex scenes in the story, which are quite graphic and explicit. Sometimes, I wish they could have a conversation together without sex coming into the picture.

Great cast of secondary characters especially her best friend Ethan, for being a true friend, especially when it comes to the things she didn't want to hear.

The author's writing flows and makes reading this story a pleasure. While there are some typos and grammatical errors, this didn't detract from my reading enjoyment.

***minor spoiler alert***

There is, however, one thing that left me puzzling. For me, one of Caroline's issues--her ability to love herself--seems to come out of nowhere. I also wish we could've seen more of her growth and transformation toward the end, instead of being told about it.

Overall, HUNGRY HEART is an incredible, unique story that is worth a read.

This was my first book by author Violet Haze, but it won't be my last! I have already one-clicked a few of her others and am excited about starting them! She is a new to me author and one that I am not sure how I didn't find earlier! I loved this story. The plot was fast moving, the characters were well developed and compelling and the location of the story was fun to read about. The author really painted a vivid picture for the reader.

I must say that I was a little surprised about the whole "open relationship" concept and know that I wouldn't be able to do it, but these characters did and it worked well for them. I was more of a fan of Caroline and Benedict as opposed to Caroline and Nathan....but was prepared to deal with both of them in Caroline's life. Of course, what I thought was going to happen never did, instead there was a gigantic twist in the whole plot - and it was one that I didn't see coming. The author took the reader on a fantastic journey as the whole book turned upside down.

The plot was quick moving, the way that the author was able to intersect the character's lives and relationships was surprising, as was the ending. The ending was not any end that I could have ever predicted but it worked and I loved it!! The author took all of the rough edges and tied them up in a nice, neat bow for the reader. All of the earlier emotions that the reader felt were resolved and silent apologizes were given to the author for the cursing at her for earlier in the book. This book will take the reader through the entire gamut of emotions but in the end the reader will get a version of a Happily Ever After....

Make sure you add this to your TBR list - it is a fun read that will leave the reader ready for more by this author! It is a fun ride with some mild bumps, but one that you will ultimately enjoy!

You would think that the relationships would leave your head spinning, Nathan and Caroline, Caroline and Benedict, Nathan and Rissa, Benedict and Miranda, Miranda and Len…. It doesn’t, it is written brilliantly. I thought I may have got confused as to who was with whom at which points but it is so well written, not once did I get lost as to who I was currently reading about. Violet Haze’s writing is both thrilling and definitely has an erotic side to it. Some of the scenes were smoking hot. You get sucked into the whirlwind romance between Caroline and Benedict, you can feel the heat through the pages. You see the differences in each relationship. Nathan and Caroline share a passionate yet loving relationship. Benedict and Caroline start off with fire and hunger for each other. The animalistic, raw sexual tension between them is the total opposite. This does progress to deeper feeling, but Nathan is still her main man throughout.
When things change and Caroline’s life is turned upside down, you really do feel sorry for all parties. If not for her best friend Ethan, who has not given up on her, she would have never been able to open herself back up to the possibility of being happy again. Ethan is the kind of friend that everyone needs in their lives. Never judging her choices whilst trying to nudge her in the right direction. The words of Benedict’s friends are what pushes her to consider her actions ‘you are enough. You are worth every breath you take, and every person you love, and every person who loves you…You deserved every moment of happiness you get, and you also deserve for someone to hold you when you’re down, and let them love you through it’. His words seem to give her the perspective she was missing, leading her back to where she needs to be.
A really great read.

Open Relationship: (Noun) A Romantic and/or sexual relationship in which the people involved are permitted or tolerated to be available to have additional simultaneous romantic and/or sexual relationship.

Caroline and Nathan are in an open relationship, he has another girlfriend and Caroline is fine with this arrangement. Benedict is in an open relationship and he's fine with that arrangement however when he lands his eyes on Caroline he sees his opportunity to have his cake and eat it too.

When Caroline and Benedict decided to become a couple with the approval of their significant other, neither of them thought new feelings were being awaken. Feelings that Caroline did not had with her boyfriend of four years Nathan.

How will this tangle relationships of six people will end up? How many hearts will be broken? How many new relationships be born from this?

I know this might be a difficult subject for some of you. This story will show you how innocent and pure hearts sometimes get played and they need guidance. Plot was well written and as I continue reading I got more into the book.

You will find yourself feeling all the emotions as the characters. I will recommend for you to read this amazing book.

Jealousy. Lies. Surprise!

Right from the second you meet Benedict, you love him. I was instantly drawn in by his dark features and aggressive confidence. I'm sure you will too.

I was curious about the inner workings of these "open relationships", but knew that it had disaster written all over it. It's human nature for a woman to want a man to love and protect her and it's in a man's bones to provide and do the protecting, especially a man like Benedict. I knew it was only a matter of time before their fabulous little arrangement blew up in their pretty little faces. What do you think happens when one link in an arrangement like this becomes disconnected? All hell breaks loose! Seriously, this story is full of surprises. There were multiple moments where I found myself thinking, "Oh God. What would I do?" Well played, Miss Haze. Well played. ;)

I started this book when it was a serial, but now all three parts can be purchased as a full length novel! The emotions run high in this one, but the reward is in the ending. You must read this one!

Caroline Lowther is in a open relationship with Nathan MacMillan for the past four years. They share a house and a bed and have other sexual relations despite their love for each other.

Nathan has a girlfriend Rissa for the past six months and we both know about each other. I am happy for him since we are not a couple in that sense.
The she met Benedict who ends up turning her world upside down. He is also in an open relationship with his longtime girlfriend Miranda which was her idea. She is seeing his best friend Len to further complicates matters.

When things start to fall apart for Benedict to trust anyone, Caroline is there for him as both find it difficult to trust others. Caroline world is turn upside down when an unexpected murder occurs. Not knowing how to deal with it, she runs home to her parents feeling numb and not contacting Benedict.

Can they move past and admit their love or run away from it? It is a tale of unexpected love and learning to fight for it even if you are scared.

I was really skeptical about reading Violet Heart by Violet Haze because of the topic. I don't necessarily agree with having a open relationship with someone because I believe that a relationship should be about two people and solely two people. But I decided to give it a try because I do have an open mind. And I definitely do not regret it reading it. I just loved Caroline's and Benedict's love story.

Caroline is an open relationship herself with her boyfriend Nathan, who is also in a relationship with Rissa. She never felt attractive to anyone besides Nathan, but that all chances when she meets Benedict. Let me just tell you that this story has many twists and turns that are going to make you lose your mind, but you're still going to love it and its going to keep you guessing and just wanting to grab them both and try to shake some sense into them.

You will not regret reading their sexy, lovely, romantic, intriguing love story. Their connection is undeniable and all the secrets are going to keep you on the edge of your seats.

I received part 1 of this book for review but once I started reading it I knew I wouldn't be able to stop.

Caroline is in a relationship with Nathan. Nathan is also in a relationship with Rissa. Yes, Caroline and Nathan have an open relationship.

Caroline meets Benedict and there is an instant attraction, he also happens to be in an open relationship with Miranda. The more that Caroline spends time with Benedict the faster she starts to fall in love with him.

When Caroline and Benedict both find out that there partners are hiding some things and a shocking murder happen they are forced to decide what they want out of life. Benedict knows who he wants. But does Caroline still want him? Can she move past the obstacle in her life, herself, and love him?

Could not find one engaging trait for heroine

Loved Benedict. Caroline, hmmm. She was such a sarcastic twit , and I never use the word twit, but that is what she was. I rarely don't finish a book, just feel like I have to...but I so disliked this girl, at 37 percent I could go no further.I did read the last chapter and she still was totally unappealing...I was so glad I hadn't wasted the time finishing the book.the hero makes me think giving the author one more shot by reading one of her other books might not be a waste of time and totally frustrating. I'm not holding my breath though.

Hungry Heart Indeed
This is the second book I have read by Violet Haze and I was not disappointed. She has definitely made my favorite author list and I am looking forward to getting my hands on more from Violet Haze.
The story was very fast pace and kept surprising me at every turn. I loved all the interactions between the characters. I also liked how the author was able to show us just how different relationships can work. But the best part was showing how there is no wrong or right when it comes to who we love and who we share our lives with.

Page-turner

Wonderful story! The book is a page-turner. I can't stop reading! The focus is on Caroline and Benedict, and they are hot together. The story deals with real problems of people in an open relationship, and goes deeper into Caroline's very self. The writing is great and addictive. Don't miss it!
