Rate this book
Ten years after abandoning their wild sorority life for unfulfilling attempts at adulthood, history buff Beth and science whiz Tawny reunite to jumpstart their flagging love lives—by embarking on a time-traveling sex spree!

In this first installment of a new series, Tawny plans a “maiden” voyage to England in the Year of Our Lord 1536, for a steamy encounter with none other than Henry VIII. But when she and Beth are accused of espionage and witchcraft, their pleasure cruise becomes a storm of danger, intrigue, and way too much spiced wine.

Will our heroines bask in kingly kisses and royal romps… or be burned at the stake? Find out in TimeBangers Volume 1: One Does Not Simply Walk Into Tudor!

I was challenged to read this book by a friend (Doug, I’m looking at you!) I met at MidAmericon II. I’ll admit I wasn’t going to review this book on my blog because I don’t normally read this type of book. However, I changed my mind as One Does Not Simply Walk into Tudor grew on me as I read it in preparation for a late night adult reading for ICON 41.

The only other book I’ve read that vaguely falls into the same genre as One Does Not Simply Walk into Tudor is Fifty Shades of Grey. And yes, I read all 3 books and yes, I was sorely disappointed in the lack of character development and repetitive nature of the plot. One Does Not Simply Walk into Tudor was a refreshing hilarious romp through time and well written.

The book is truly about friendships and how friendships, no matter how much time has passed, can be renewed. Beth and Tawny’s friendship was genuine and was the driving piece of the story—how they would travel through time to save each other’s asses.

I will admit the steamy bits were indeed steamy. *blushes* They didn’t feel awkward or forced as I have experienced in your standard nickel-nasty. The steamy bits didn’t overwhelm the novel either. If you are a fan of the steamy bits, Kirk and Teague provided, in the electronic version, an index right at the start that will jump you right to those passages with a simple click.

Is One Does Not Simply Walk into Tudor the next Outlander? No, but it was a fun diversion for a few short days and certainly raised my expectations for erotic fiction. I’ll also probably never look at Ann Boleyn in the same way again.

The first volume of the Time Bangers series, this book is a great, easy read. The sex scenes are sexy, the humor is actually funny, the sci-fi is fun and airy, and all of it is well-written.

The deeper substance of the book is really about the friendship between Beth and Tawny. They are just rediscovering their friendship and the time-travel sex smorgasbord aspects of the book test that friendship in ways that are fun (and raunchy) to explore. I'm excited to see what debauched levity their friendship brings about in book two now that it appears to have survived book one, Tudor boners and all.

Very funny and, to me, surprisingly British-sounding despite the American setting and authorship.

As the title suggests there are plenty of pop-culture references including the mentioning of such characters as Paula Treides, heroine of the famous Sci-Fi novel Sand Lords. Good satire, too, and a helpful index of erotic scenes (spoiler: 3 M/F and 1 F/F). The authors clearly had lots of giggles writing; I am curious if they will be able to keep it up in the next installment, which bears the working title The Golden Whored.

Will I keep this book right next to The Hitchhiker's Guide ? Why, of course not, I shelve fiction alphabetically by author.

Meet Beth and Tawny, two sexy sorority friends who've drifted apart but reunite at a reunion. Beth, the history buff, is divorced and has a daughter and dead-end job. Tawny, the scientific genius, lives a lavish but ever-more-isolated life. When she hires Beth as a personal assistant, her friend accidentally stumbles into her latest invention - a time traveling shower that leads directly into the court of Henry VIII!

Contrary to the cartoonish cover and index to sex scenes that open the book, TimeBangers is really quite a heartfelt little novel about friendship, confidence, and re-igniting that sense of adventurous playfulness fondly remembered from our college years. About half the book is taken up with setting the scene, so to speak - perhaps because this is the first of a planned series. The high jinks that go on in Tudor England are of course a bit silly, and our gals do not fall into any nail-biting situations beyond an interrogation by a rude Cromwell or an interview with a saucy Anne Boleyn, but it's all good fun, and carried off with wit and verve.

I can't wait to see where Tawny's shower takes them next!

I picked this up after reading about the great time the authors had at this year's Worldcon, and because I tend to have a weird enjoyment of time-travel romances and also have a minor fascination with the Tudor period. Though this isn't exactly a romance, more comic erotica; our heroines, historian Beth and scientist Tawny, decide that they have had enough of their boring twenty-first century thirty-something lives and go back in time to the court of King Henry VIII in order to shag him, with frankly hilarious consequences. I found this really funny and enjoyable - my favourite chapter title is Chapter Ten, "In Which Beth Explains The Retrospectively Obvious Hazard Of Substituting TV Dramas For Research", but there also a handy index of erotic scenes at the beginning for those misguided readers who want to skip the bits in between the sex. The authors obviously had a great time writing it, and I was very entertained which is the main point.

A hilarious romp into the court of King Henry VII featuring sex, time-travel, and frustrated women who just want to get laid already! The pacing is wonderful, the back-story credible, and the only thing I came away wondering is why the time machine was built exactly like it was. On the whole, an exciting look at how erotica can be smart, and series I hope continues.

This is a clever, sexy, romp through history.
I love the premise that Tawney thinks Henry the 8th would be totally bangable because of a TV show. That's completely logical, if you ask me.
The chapter titles were hilarious.
And young Jules has the making of a great character when she grows up!

This book lives up to its title. It's a fun time travel romance book. The romance tropes are played with in a way that doesn't annoy me. For example, there's a billionaire in the book, but the billionaire is a friend, not a love interest. I also like the focus on female friendship.

Another thing that was notable was how many sexist assumptions were not in the book. That makes it stand out. And the historical research was pretty good.

The two main characters used to be friends in college, where they compared notes about dating men FOR SCIENCE. Yes, it's that kind of story.

There's an implied happily ever after in this book, but not a marriage, and it's refreshing.

All in all, the best romance book I've read this year.

A MILF encounters her ol' best gal at their college reunion and they move in together. That is the whole first half of the book.

From there a shower behaves like the closet in 11/22/63 and the two end up in the court of King Henry VIII for some physical encounters. occasionally engaging, swearing, adult content.

Fun story, real characters

I took a chance on this book after meeting the authors at the World Science Fiction Convention; I'm glad I did. Even if you ignore the erotic scenes, the story stands up and the characters feel real. I enjoyed the scene-setting in Tudor England, too, and I'm looking forward to further books in the series.

Not suitable for under-18s, of course. :-)

I just want to say that I normally read romantic books that turn into erotica later... I absolutely love this book. I love the writing style, the humor, and characters. I shall be waiting for the next book, as patiently as possible. Thank you to the authors for creating such an amazingly fun story.

This is definitely not a genre I usually read. This is a "steamy romance" slash fantasy/science fiction book. However, the puns and play on words had me laughing. This is a book you can finish in one sitting and is humorous at best. I enjoyed reading the fluff. The entire story line is pretty ridiculous, but honestly, it was fun to read.

I will say that the actual storyline of two friends reunited was pretty good and the characters weren't too horrible, in fact, I liked them. The book is well written and pretty witty.
