Melanie is surrounded by people who love Jesus and love her enough to want her to know Him too. I felt that all through this story.
They never treat Melanie like a project. They simply love her, make room for her, and keep showing up. Through the way they live and care for her, she begins to see what a life with Jesus looks like.
Melanie notices how often the Lethersby royals wrote about God, Lord, and Jesus. What catches her is how personal their faith was. They wrote as though their Creator was actually interested in the details of their lives.
IYKYK. Just wait, Melanie!!!!!!! You won’t be able to NOT do the same.
That part hit me deeply! The people around Melanie live with that same belief. They pray. They trust God with real decisions. They take Scripture seriously. Their relationship with Jesus affects how they treat her and how they live when following Him costs them something. They make time for others. Truly make time for one another.
I loved that these characters were completely human. They had history, hurt, fears, personalities, and their own things to surrender. Melanie could see Jesus in the way they loved her.
I kept thinking about how much it matters that Christians actually live what we say we believe.
Let me say that again the right way: I continue to think about how much it matters that I actually live what I say I believe.
Following Jesus had cost these characters something. Some had lost people they loved. Some had to walk away from the life they thought they would have. Starting again required surrender. Day by day, the choices they made shaped who they were individually and who they were together.
So many truths from Scripture came alive for me through this story.
One of the lines I loved was, “Your value is determined by the Lord alone.” Melanie needed that truth. I need that truth. We all do. Our value is not decided by what happened to us, what someone thinks of us, what we accomplish, or what we failed to become.
I also loved the mystery around Queen Alma, the hidden tunnel, and the search for the greatest treasure. I wanted to know what they would find, and I loved seeing Melanie begin to understand what really matters.
Jesus never took His eyes off Melanie.
I loved that! Even when she did not know Him, He was not gone. People who loved Him kept loving her. She kept hearing truth. She kept seeing faith lived right in front of her, even before she understood what God was doing.
I laughed. I cried. I grinned. I sobbed. I did everything in between. I was right there emotionally with them through the story … feeling it with my whole heart.
Ann Swindell writes Christian fiction the way I want to read it. Jesus matters. Scripture matters. Prayer matters. Following Him changes people and sometimes costs them dearly.

“History, mystery and books? This was going to be fun.” So says Melanie who is researching a journal penned by Queen Alma who disappeared over 100 years ago.
This was an engaging mystery bathed in the Christian Gospel that does not feel forced but rings true. Christ being the light in darkness was a prominent theme.
This immersive story continues the quest for answers of Queen Alma’s abdication for a life of nursing in England in wartime. Only part of the story has come to light so far. Now Melanie and Eddie must scour the journals to find clues to a long kept secret.
Melanie, best friend of Princess Ellie and a US citizen, has taken a job at the university teaching US History. She is feeling lonely and out of place and just knows something is missing in her life. Eddie is curator of the National Museum and is helping Melanie try to figure out if there are hidden clues in the journals.
The author had me on the edge of my seat in the scary hidden tunnel and emotional when the characters showed their faith as they prayed for eachother. It was very romantic as Melanie and Eddie grew closer to eachother and to God. I almost wish the Kingdom of Lethersby was real.

This was one of my most anticipated books of the year. I tried not to binge it, but it was too good to stop. It’s such a beautiful story! This whole series has been amazing. I love the characters and the setting and the mystery. The narrator does an excellent job of bringing the stories to life.

This is the third and last book in Swindell’s Castle Library series. If you have not yet read the first two books, Christmas in the Castle Library and Love in the Castle Library, I highly recommend you do. That will introduce you to the wonderful little imagined country of Lethersby, its past and current royal family, and the mysteries that have already been solved.
Book 3 starts up right after the end of Book 2. The two main characters were supporting characters in books 1 and 2, so I enjoyed getting to know Melanie and Eddie better. Swindell does a great job with plot twists (I hit a big one right when I should have gone to bed, and ended up reading until I finished the book!)
There are good insights in finding one’s identity, what it means to truly surrender to Christ, and how grow in one’s relationship with Jesus. I really enjoyed the book and wish there were more (second generation stories??!!).

Swindell has crafted a Christian romance saturated with truth, goodness, and beauty. Her academic researcher protagonists don’t shy away from tough issues of pride and humility, the need to prove their worth, and trusting God’s will for their lives. I adored how Melanie’s quest for beauty and perfection leads her to seek Jesus at her lowest. Readers will relate to Eddie’s desire to do great things for God’s kingdom and his realization that service is the greatest thing he can do for the Lord. As well, readers will enjoy re-immersing themselves in the sumptuous royal setting of Lethersby and revisiting characters from previous books. Finally, the literary and historical references peppering the book, from Shakespeare to Benjamin Franklin, add the perfect touch.

Great conclusion to the series! This book has very strong faith content with lots of scripture and gospel of Jesus outlined beautifully. Loved Melanie and Eddie!

My sister wrote this and honestly, WHAT A BOOK. The love of God in Christ Jesus is all over this novel, and Ann handles the gospel through Melanie’s story with such grace and joy. This is my favorite of the three, a brilliant conclusion to a series written for the glory of God. Forever your hype girl, sis, and not because I have to be, but because these books are really THAT beautiful. Thank you for being brave enough, hand in hand with God, to write them. Honored to be your sister.

Book #83 of 2026: I may as well have marked the 5+ star rating in advance of my reading because there was never any doubt!
This is a beautiful conclusion to the series I love so much!! This is coming from a woman who is not a fan of royalty; yet, this book swept me right back into Lethersby without any resistance on my part.
My deep appreciation of this story is not, however, because of the castle, the jewels & gowns, and the opulence. Yet, all those things are so fun! Though I do admit that the castle library is a big plus because I am definitely a Royal Book Nerd of the highest order. (By the way, are there sashes and rings for that bestowment?! Just kidding. Well, sort of. Also, I would like to put in an order for a plush window seat for reading and my own moving library ladder. Some French pastries from the cafe and a modest, bookish tiara wouldn’t hurt either.) 👸🏼😉👑
Truly though, all kidding aside, my absolute favorite parts of this book are:
(1) the new faith walk by Eddie and how he puts Melanie’s faith journey ahead of his own wants
(2) the journey Melanie took from her pain-and quest for unattainable perfection-to the faithful, forgiving, full love of Jesus.
The use of Scripture & prayer, the amazing friendships, Eddie’s parents, the late Queen Alma’s whole story, the mysteries, etc. made for a truly special story that warmed my heart and encouraged me in my own faith.
God had His hand on these stories and I anticipate anything this author writes. I hope more and more writers include such gentle boldness of faith in their stories. The world needs more unapologetic truth and encouragement that is spoken (& written!) from a place of love.
My favorite quote is from Chapter 20 when Eddie is worried about Melanie. He goes looking for her after a long time spent in prayer. Part of him is wondering if he’s being a crazy fool. He hears the Lord tell him: “Obedience to Me often looks like foolishness to others.” I had to just sit with that for a little while.
As per the Acknowledgments after the story’s end, I am hereby officially saying these words as one who has loved every moment in Lethersby: THANK-YOU, SUE!
I am sad to leave the *In the Castle Library* series, but I can always go back for visits! And I am excited about the possibility for stories of ancient Lethersby!

"Secrets in the Castle Library" is such a satisfying conclusion to the "In the Castle Library" series by Ann Swindell. I can't remember the last contemporary series I've read that was so faith-filled and encouraging to my soul as this one is.
First and foremost, this is an in your face (in a good way) Christian fiction series. I love the strong faith content and highlighted so many passages that I've gone back and re-read. It's also a series that I've gone back and re-read books 1 & 2 for before reading this one which is a huge compliment to the writing and book content since I rarely re-read books.
This is also a series that must be read in order. If a reader starts with this one, so many elements to Queen Alma's mystery will be blank spots as well as the character development of some of the characters in the book. If you are reading this review and looking to start with this one, I highly recommend you pick up "Christmas in the Castle Library" first and then read in order.
This book comes from the point of view of a character Melanie, who isn't a Christian, but is surrounded by those who are Christians, even some recent to their faith. She's skeptical and doesn't understand how it can shape lives, though she sees how content those with faith are and how much steadier her friend has become. She even wonders if it's something people have because they are royal and have a closer connection to God through that status. Melanie couldn't be farther from the truth.
There are still secrets that Melanie thinks can be revealed, despite historian Eddie's disagreement on the subject. Him and his team have been over the recently found journals and didn't find anything but Melanie thinks there's more. So despite Eddie's skepticism, the two team up and work to figure out Alma's last secrets.
The book has romance, faith and so many twists and turns to go down to get to the final, satisfying conclusion. I wasn't super surprised at the ending but with royal romance books, I find enjoyment in the predictability of some elements like the romance part. I loved the mystery twists and turns - some of those were a surprise for sure.
I loved this series and hope the author Ann has more faith-filled fiction stories up her sleeve for the future. I'd love to read more fiction books written by her!

This is the 3rd book in The Castle Library series. It is most definitely a Christian romance. You will want to read this series in order as there is an ongoing mystery that is being discussed.
It took me quite a while to connect with this book. Perhaps that was because it had been so long since I had read the others that I'd forgotten the characters and thr underlying story connecting all the books. Or perhaps it was that Ai didn't have much listening time at the beginning so felt that it was dragging over days even though I hadn't read much of the actual book. Both of those things are on me though.
The storyline does pick up after halfway through the book. The end is very good. I could have done without all of the inner monologs and I personally do not enjoy reading other people's prayers. There are several of those. If scripture and prayers in books bother you, this series is probably not for you.
The same woman narrators this book as the others in the series and she keeps everyone's characters the same. I enjoy and appreciate that.

For the third time (book 3 in the series), I am blown away by a story that could have been simple and trite but that Ann Swindell transformed into something with emotional and spiritual depth that just feels real. I don't often recommend adult romance for teens, even clean ones, because the characters are too "perfect," setting unattainable standards for young women and for their thoughts about their future husbands. This series breaks my moratorium. The way Ann's characters process their emotions and difficulties is the way I would want my children to emulate as they navigate the difficulties of life- while understanding that they will never live in a castle and wear a tiara. No, really. They won't. Melanie is my favorite of all the characters Ann Swindell has written thus far- she said the things about Queen Alma that I wasn't saying out loud but thought in my heart. I love her too-much-ness.

I have adored this series, and this final book was the perfect ending. While I hate to say goodbye to the castle library, it will always be one of my favorite places that I visited through books.
I connected with this final story, and Eddie in particular, in a unique way. His spiritual journey was similar to mine in many ways, and the author was spot on in her Biblical views and his path through establishing with his relationship with Jesus and his Christian walk. Surrounded by family and friends who care, he comes out the other side better for his struggles. Familiar characters return to solve the rest of the puzzle of the former queen, with Mel taking the spotlight and receiving a redemption story of her own.
What a wonderful time I have had going through these books and getting to know characters that have become friends. I will absolutely read anything this talented author writes in the future.

This is truly one of my favorite series of all time. No notes. The characters, the mystery of Queen Alma’s disappearance, the setting, the faith threads, all come together to form a chef’s kiss for me. These stories are beautifully written. Melanie’s story in this third book of the series, was perfection. Her desire to solve the last bits of the mystery of Alama’s disappearance as well as Melanie’s faith journey made this a story I absolutely devoured. All the feels, some tears and a perfect ending. This series is going to be a yearly reread for me. I love it that much!

This is the third book is the series and probably my favorite. I loved getting Melanie's story, as well as getting the final answers to Queen Alma's story. Once I started, I couldn't put it down. Great conclusion to the trilogy.

5 stars isn’t nearly enough! Ann Swindell has become one of my favorite authors and this series one of my all time favorites! These stories are so well crafted in a land dreams are made of with characters who draw you in and don’t let go. She unapologetically weaves faith throughout each story with reminders that Jesus is the true source of identity, peace, joy and love.

What an incredible story! The characters are wonderful; my affection for them grew with each chapter. This is such an enjoyable tale about the mystery of Queen Alma and the quest to uncover her past secrets. God is woven throughout the story and plays a vital role in the developing romance. I must say, it was so beautifully crafted that it brought me to tears. From start to finish, this story touched every part of me. I read all night until early morning. I couldn't put it down! I definitely plan to read more books by this author.

Secrets in the Castle Library is an awesome conclusion to Ann Swindell's In the Castle Library series. I only wish it wasn't the last book. I have loved visiting the fictional European country of Lethersby. What a wonderful set of modern princess stories. Throughout this series more and more discoveries have been made regarding the life of Queen Alma, the queen who disappeared a hundred years earlier during the Great War. It was thought that they had discovered all they could, but there was still more that needed to come to light.
Melanie is the friend of Ellie, the woman who was the FMC of the first book. She is in Lethersby to accept a job at the university in teaching American History, one of her passions. However, she also desires to delve into the Queen Alma mystery, being sure that there is still more to learn from the diaries that had been found, determined to find another hidden code or clue to lead them to further truths. However, our MMC, Eddie, who is the curator of the museum and part of the team studying the journals, is not happy to have this outsider try to tell him that he and his team in essence have missed something. So, their relationship was off to a rocky start.
I loved seeing their relationship evolve while working together. Loved seeing their perspectives change and both of them grow as characters. Melanie was searching for a sense of self, a sense of identity and belonging. But through her life she had always been looking in the wrong places. Eddie had been striving for accolades and self-importance. He was a new Christian while she had put up walls and didn't see a need for religion. Christianity was a central theme in this book, with the plan of salvation brought up multiple times, Scripture was read, characters prayed, the Lord's will was sought, and truth was shared. Through Alma's journals we also saw how faith was important in her life.
I loved watching Melanie and Eddie scouring the journals for clues, and I loved when inspiration struck. I loved the new twists in this story, but also I loved getting to see all the main characters from the previous books. I loved that all these characters were important in this story, and we got to see them interacting.
Definitely an emotional read, but oh, so, so good. I've loved each book in this series and can't pick a favorite. They each contained sweet romance, intriguing mysteries, and truths brought to light. Highly recommended.

If you haven't heard of Ann Swindell's In the Castle Library series, you are missing out on a wonderfully superb and wholesome series! Secrets in the Castle Library, the third book in this series, truly impressed me. The wholesomeness, intrigue, excellent character growth, faith-filled lessons, and complex and engaging plot are just some of the reasons I highly recommend this book. It truly is rare to find such a combination of great writing with all of the smaller details that make a refined reader's list, but Ms. Swindell's writing is that reader's dream.
One of the reasons I have truly enjoyed Ms. Swindell's writings is because of the wholesomeness and true Christian values found in her writings. Most Christian fiction is like a cupcake of fiction with sprinkles on the top of Christian themes, while Ms. Swindell's books have Christian values, themes, and lessons. To use the same analogy, this book has Christianity mixed throughout the cupcakes....an ingredient in the flour, part of the flour, butter, sugar....you get the picture ;). It is thoroughly and naturally mixed into the whole book.
This particular book in the series really left an impression on me. I was reminded of the great benefit or detriment your circle of friends can be to your character development and spiritual life. I also was impressed by the focus on prayer and the sweet circle of fellowship between family and friends. The main characters of Melanie and Eddie were well developed and carefully portrayed. I appreciated their banter and perspectives. As Melanie and Eddie worked together and learned more of each other's character and past, they each learned a greater respect for the other. Their personalities and quirks make for some lively conversations and adventures. I loved the inclusion of familiar characters from the previous books. It felt like a family reunion and a wonderful addition to the previous stories.
I appreciated the honesty and transparency of the friendships as well as the real-world applications of mentoring and praying for unbelieving friends. The professional rivalry and then friendship and romance that developed between Eddie and Melanie was refreshingly sweet and heartwarming. I also greatly appreciated how Eddie was careful to obey God's word even when it was difficult. Secrets in the Castle Library brings readers a lively storyline full of richly woven characters and plot twists. This book is set in a perfectly charming royal and historic-feeling kingdom with an actual castle and a swoon-worthy library. All in all I absolutely enjoyed Secrets in the Castle Library and highly recommend it! I cannot wait to read more of Ms. Swindell's writings! Happy reading!

What a beautiful conclusion to this trilogy! Not only do we fill in the final clues surrounding the mysterious disappearance of Lethersby's beloved queen Alma and spend more cozy hours working in the amazing castle library, but we also get a wonderfully suspenseful conversion story and a heartfelt romance to boot. Every page of this book boldly proclaims the Gospel and wrestles with the doubts and skepticism that sometimes creep into the minds of believers and those who want to believe. It's a cozy, sweet story, but with lots of depth and much to ponder. I also loved checking in on my favorite characters from the previous books. Melanie and Eddie's story brings everything full circle to a satisfying, consummate ending.

This third book of the series is soooo good! I absolutely loved this story and the way that the author very clearly gives the plan of salvation more than once throughout the book. What a beautiful story of how the Lord pursues us and works out everything together for our good. Additionally, I love how the characters chose to follow the Lord's statues instead of their own desires. While the road may have more twist and turns and seem like the more difficult path, it always leads to a greater life than we could ask of even imagine.

Ann Swindell has done it again. The third book in the In The Castle Library series was incredible. Like its two predecessors, I think this one will be in my top ten for the year. Honestly, the beginning was a bit slow for me; I had trouble getting invested (But I also started a new job at the time of starting this book so that definitely may have been a factor). The end though! The end of this book had me through and through. There’s something about a book that leads you to a spiritual epiphany of your own, and this one did that for me. There were several moments that I had to pause reading to pray and have a conversation with God and I love when that happens with a book. All and all it was a definite five stars.

Secrets in the Castle Library is an excellent story and the perfect ending to the In the Castle Library series. Not that I will complain if a Christmas novella shows up a few years down the royal line.
What I love about this book, and this series, is that each female character has a unique personality. Each has their own flaws, struggles, and talents, and through it all you get the royal thread of the mystery of Queen Alma.
I love Eddie and Melanie, and how their relationship grows. I love the culture and heritage of Lethersby, and the best part is that the story continues across the three books, with characters from Christmas in the Castle Library and Love in the Castle Library still featuring prominently. And of course we finally get Queen Alma's full story.
My favourite part of this entire series is the deep spiritual truths woven through each story. Ann Swindell doesn't hold back, and the Holy Spirit has spoken to me through her beautiful stories.
This entire series is a must-read for any Christian fiction reader who enjoys romance, mystery, royalty, and God's love shining through the pages.
And of course...the cover is gorgeous.

Absolutely amazing conclusion
Wow, I absolutely love this amazing book! It’s full of sweet romance, faith, finding secrets about Queen Alma from 1900s. Melanie is Princess Ellie’s best friend. Eddy is the Lethersby museum curator. Sparks fly until they don’t! Another match made in the Castle Library, but how can it be? Prayer and faith and emotions are very strong in this series and especially this conclusion to the trilogy. I would love to see more of the Lethersby castle! So so good! I recommend starting at book 1 for all the background. Excellent!

I love this book! Although I connected with Ellie’s story the most out of the series, Melanie & Eddie are truly relatable. What a joy to see them grow in their faith! This trilogy has truly been amazing, definitely in my top favorites of all time! The story is captivating and ultimately it all points to Christ. I haven’t found another series like it. It’ll be one I go back to again & again! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Have been waiting impatiently for this book. Was so excited to find the audio book without a wait at the library. The narrator is amazing. This book is filled with mystery and romance, scripture, the gospel and prayer. I loved it so much. I'm sad to see the series end and sincerely hope this author writes more books.

While there are many books that I read during the year but for some reason this series has blessed my socks off in so many ways.
After reading the second book Love in the Castle Library I didn’t think they third book would be better then that one, but now since reading the third and final book of this series 🥲 I’m now eating my words. Because Secrets in the Castle Library is so much better than the first two.
Though each book can be read as a stand a lone novel they are best to be read as a series and in order that way you get the whole picture.

This is the third book in the castle library series and probably my favorite. Like Mel I struggle with trying to reach perfection and trying to fit in. The reminder of faith in Christ and that true perfection is found in Christ was such a needed reminder for me. I love the faith and Christs answers that was woven through the story. The ending of Queen Alma’s story was satisfying and I love that all three couples were involved in the conclusion. I will eagerly be looking forward to any future books of Ann Swindell.

This series, you guys! I simply couldn't wait to read Secrets in the Castle Library after falling in love with the first two in the series so fully. So thankful for Hoopla Audio! It was everything I wanted this finale to be and more.
