Blind Flight

Flying with her uncle in his small plane, 13-year-old Debbie who has been blind for about a year must suddenly take control of the plane when her uncle loses consciousness. "Help! Somebody - help me!" Debbie is desperate. She's 3000 feet above sea level in a small plane. The pilot is unconscious. The windshield is broken. It's freezing cold. To survive, Debbie must try to land the plane herself. But she's never flown alone and --- she's blind!

I remember reading this book with my class as an elementary school child and begging my teacher to read more than a page or two a day.

There are few books from years ago that I remember the titles of, but this one has been burned into my consciousness. What a suspenseful read!

It's books like this one that set me up as a book lover for life.

A childhood favorite re-visited.

Is the story as good as I remember? Yes

What ages would I recommend it too? Twelve and up.

Length? Three hours to read.

Characters? Memorable, several characters.

Setting? Real world, 1970's maybe?

Written approximately? 1980.

Does the story leave questions in the readers mind? Ready to read more. Does the uncle survive? Does the Debbie's vision improve? Did she wreck the plane? Did she ever fly again?

Any issues the author (or a more recent publisher) should cover? No.

Short storyline: Debbie goes on a flight with her uncle. A bird crashes through the windshield and knocks him out. She has to fly without sight and land the plane.

Notes for the reader: This is an excellent book I read as a kid, 30+ years ago. Even now, it means far more to me. It is an excellent story that describes and shows how people see and move through the world differently. I believe everyone should read this story.

**Warning: this text may contain spoilers** A favorite from my childhood. I remember it was intensely exciting and scary. A blind girl and her pilot father (or uncle or grandfather? I can't remember) go up in a little plane. They fly through a flock of geese and one crashes through the windshield and knocks out the pilot. She somehow manages to find the radio by feeling around and calls for help and her mayday is picked up. They manage to talk her through and the story ends with her safe on the ground but I remember it was a nail biter! I'd love to read it again.

This is a very good book. The book was Kind of old though. This book had alot of action in to it too. I really enjoyed this book. This is an exiting book.

This book was about a girl on a farm. The girl decides to go up in a plane. Her and her uncle goes up in the air. her uncle passed out . She was doomed. She Had to take over the plane.

This was a book I remember vividly. This was required fifth grade reading and I stayed up to early hours to finish this book. It wasn't due until Monday but that Friday night I finished it. I still do that today.

I wish I'd read this as a kid, and I know I'd have liked it. I read it to my students, and they got a bit impatient with all that time in flight. They remember it as "the book where the plane never would land."
