Review for the complete series

Sugar Soldier is a great series if you enjoy cute shoujo fluff. The characters are all likeable, the romance is sweet and largely drama-free with both leads treating each other sweetly. There are nice friendships and family relations that don't fall short either. The art is quite typical shoujo but very pretty, definitely one of Sakai's best art-wise.

Although this series does delve into some more serious themes - child abandonment, terminal illness, sibling rivalry and even an implied sexual assault - I found this to be an incredibly light series. It's great as it gives it a nice wholesome feeling without having to over complicate things. But it also means there's no true conflict to overcome which means the series bumbles along a little bit. This is by no means a bad thing as it'll be perfect if you truly just want a cute high school romance with friendships, but it won't pack the same punch as some more complex series. I definitely would recommend for fans of the genre though.

In diesem Band sind die Schüler auf einer Klassenfahrt in Kyoto. Diese verläuft nicht ganz problemlos…Makoto nimmt unbewusst ständig Abstand von Shun, weil sie diese „komische Gedanken hat, sobald sie ihn sieht und in Verlegenheit gerät. Aida ein Junge aus ihrer Gruppe fällt plötzlich über Makoto her, bis Shun sie rettet! Kurz danach erklärt sie ihm, weshalb sie so abweisend zu ihm war. Nachdem alles geklärt war und sie wieder zurück waren wurde die Situation nicht besser, denn Shun wurde plötzlich richtig krank und brach zuhause zusammen. Zur richtigen Zeit kommt ihm jedoch eine junge Frau zur Hilfe und es stellte sich zum Schluss heraus, dass diese junge Frau, seine leibliche Mutter ist. Ich hatte in diesem Band echt oft Gänsehaut Momente gehabt. Man merkt aufjedenfall das wir dem Ende nahe sind! Nun geht es weiter mit Band 10 und ich hoffe wir erfahren hier nun mehr. Weshalb Shuns Mutter ihn damals als Kind einfach alleine gelassen hat und ob er ihr verzeihen wird?

Ok, la storia di Uki e del professore non mi ha convinta più di tanto. Ma perché è il tipo di relazione che non mi piace. Infatti, è praticamente impossibile che ne venga fuori una relazione equilibrata.

Il nuovo personaggio che è entrato in scena... OK, si capisce subito chi sia e non so dove l'autrice voglia andare a parare. Speriamo bene per l'ultimo volume.

Sigh, ho finito anche questa serie di Mayu Sakai. SIGH!

This series never disappoints. The story keeps me invested and makes me laugh, while it isn't all cute and fluffy, but actually tackles a lot of serious subjects, my favourite type of manga.
