I do not know if I should like or hate the Älfar. They are monsters after all, but then again, they are good to each other, they just dislike every other race that is below them...right.

So you see, the Älfar are a hard race to like. They want to conquer, kill and make slaves of others. But at the same time they love arts and making art of disgusting things...right. They are proud, beautiful, deadly and evil. Yes, they are rather fascinating aren't they?

They are campaigning to take over the human lands and kill the elves. They have dark ones at their sides and there will be death and ruthlessness.

We will follow Sinthoras and Caphalor, evil and with good qualities in their way. Another smaller pov is a young mage trying to warn other of these monsters. Morana, an Älf trying to get people to join the Älfar and a few other POVs. All showing the Älfar darkness.

They really should disappear as a people, can't they play nice?

But, that is not the only thing in this book. An old enemy of theirs show up and they will have their comeuppance.

And at the end, what next? Oh they will continue to kill and conquer, just like before. Destruction to the end.

Gelungene Fortsetzung, aber gefühlt zu viele Blickwinkel.

Storytechnisch absolut mitreißend, aber hier und da waren mir die Blickwinkel zu viel.

Sinthoras und Caphalor bekommen hier eher eine Nebenrolle und andere schieben sich öfter nach vorn.

Die vielen verschiedenen Blickwinkel sind allerdings nötig, denn neben dem Krieg gibt es noch jede Menge andere "Kriege" auszutragen. Denn die Verbündeten gehen ihre eigenen Weg und hier und da wir den Albae ihre Überheblichkeit zum Verhängnis. Auch Sinthoras, den ein hartes Schicksal erwartet. Zu Recht wie ich finde. Caphalor ist einfach der sympathischere Alb.

Aber auch in der Hauptstadt der Albae geht Einiges vor. Die Heimat stirbt und es gilt zu neuen Ufern aufzubrechen oder aber unter zu gehen.

I was initially dubious about this, book. These characters established as protagonists in a new setting, are appearing for the first time in a context where they were previously established as clear antagonists. Heitz has a simple way of negating this. He's just essentially transformed them back into villains and introduced new characters for the reader to root for. Despite being a prequel, a lot of the conclusions of the various plot threads aren't overly obvious and material from the chronologically later titles is welded onto the narrative really well. It's very readable stuff as always, I think the translation from German provides a formality that lends itself well to fantasy writing while the action prose is suitably visceral. Fans of Heitz previous series can find a lot to like here.

Leider hat mich der zweite Teil der Albae-Reihe nicht so überzeugt. Für meinen Geschmack gab es zu viele POVs und dadurch zu viele "flache" Charaktere, denen keine Entwicklung ermöglicht wurde. Ich muss ehrlich sagen, ich hatte mir mehr erhofft.

Zwischenzeitlich (und vor allem am Anfang des Buches) habe ich mit dem Gedanken gespielt, es abzubrechen. Ich bin zwar froh, es nicht getan zu haben, aber richtig freuen tu ich mich auch nicht auf den nächsten Teil.

I’m not sure how to rate this book...
I’m no fan of the characters most of the time, 90% are just Incredibly cruel. The plot was less cruel, more focused on battles and strategy than the first book, which I liked.
The style is really lovely though, as is in all his other books. And the narrator was great again, too.

Das waren aber wirklich knappe drei Sterne. Ich habe immer noch das Gefühl die Geschichte wird eingeleitet und dümpelt vor sich hin. Die zwei spannendsten Aspekte, nämlich der Nebeldämon und der Parasitenbefall, werden immer nur angeschnitten und ich warte die meiste Zeit in der Geschichte darauf, dass diese sich weiter entwickeln.
Leider waren es mir auch zu viele Perspektiven, aus denen man ließt, ich konnte manche Charaktere erst mit der Zeit auseinander halten, da der Autor sich keine Zeit für deren Beschreibung nahm. So hätte man Anhaltspunkte gehabt, an denen man sich festhalten konnte. Mit der Zeit haben sich Eigenschaften des Charakters der Person gezeigt, aber eben leider erst zu spät. Das war mir einfach zu viel, sodass ich mit keinem wirklich inbrünstig mitfiebern konnte.
Es gab aber auch Handlungsstränge, die wirklich spannend und interessant waren und die ich gern verfolgt habe.

continuano le avventure degli albi.. stavolta sono molti più personaggi. In realtà c'è poco di Sinthoras e poco di Caphalor, ma va bene, almeno c'è un equilibrio. Buon racconto anche se alcune volte mi è parso succeda tutto velocemente, quando per arrivare a quel punto ci sono voluti molti capitoli e molta narrazione. Alla fine Heitz dice che queste storie son narrate parallelamente alle storie nanesche dell'altra saga.. ma che è uscita anni prima, e chi si ricorda tutto?? Poteva gestire meglio queste cose e farci ricordare meglio cosa è successo ai personaggi albici dalla parte dei nani.

The story is a direct continuation of the book "Righteous Fury", showing what the Älfar did after invading the Stone Gateway, showing all their logistics and how they would proceed in their mission to eliminate their sworn enemies: The Elves.

You present yourselves to the barbarians as creatures of light, but we know your true nature, thought Morana. The groundlings were no more deceived by you than we are, but humans are dazzled by you – they’ll believe any nonsense you like to tell them. They’ll soon see your true colours and how corrupt and devious you are. - Morana (Page 144)

The story continues to show the more "human" side of its protagonists, whether in their relationships or in their opinions about the world.

‘Don’t they say that the sword is mightier than the pen?’ Virssagòn broke in with a smile to indicate that the suggestion he was about to make was not to be taken too seriously. ‘How about if I challenge him to a fight and we give him a pen to defend himself with? If he wins, we’ll accept him.’ - Virssagòn (Page 35)

In conclusion, the book shows well how a post-war period develops, as well as how, from that moment on, all life in Girdlegard would change. Definitely recommended.

Godzijdank, deze heb ik uit! Een tip: als je honderd bladzijden per dag doet geraak je door deze boel tamelijk snel, maar je moet volhouden ...

Ik kan zeggen dat het tweede deel van de Legenden van de Alfen mij meer beviel dan het eerste. Alle nederlagen, hoe groot of klein ook, die de alfen ondergingen maakten het lezen aangenamer. Vooral de snelheid en intensiteit waarmee de rampen hen overspoelden was bijzonder bevredigend: eerst de 'ziekte' in de vorm van wormen die hun ingewanden deden ontploffen, dan de oude vijand, de acronta, die wraak op de alfen namen, om uiteindelijk uit te barsten in een zalig crescendo van alfische kreten wanneer een overstroming van zwavelzuur hun lelijke dodencultus stadje samen met alle inwoners liet oplossen in gele, stinkende dampen ...

Eigenlijk had ik dit boek zo'n 13 jaar geleden al gekocht en toen al uitgelezen. Indertijd was ik bezeten door alles wat met elfjes te maken had: beeldjes, afbeeldingen ... Naïef dacht ik dat Legenden van de Alfen een sage over de goedheid van de elfen was. Opmerkelijk is wel dat terwijl ik het boek nu voor de tweede keer las, ik me niets kon herinneren behalve de opvallende namen van de alfen. Mijn brein had gewoon al die negativiteit uit mijn geheugen gewist en hier kom ik er alweer mee op de proppen door dit romannetje nog eens te lezen ...

Book to of the Dark Elf saga. The Alfar are invading Gargamel and even if it is not going exactly as planned it is going. Unfortunately, while the entire Alfar army is off invading an old enemy shows up to invade the Alf homeland. On top of that a pissed off relative of the ex-boyfriend of Sinderella's girlfriend stirs up some serious political intrigue against him which pulls him away from the war at the worst time. And, naturally, the Inextinguishable Ones have their own unknowable plans.

It's a well written war story following several characters. Different aspects of the war are explored in distinct segments but everything moves forward. Not as much character development as in the first one but their the entire race was being introduced. Now they are a known element so it's not necessary to overdo the wanton cruelty and evilness, they should already by accepted by the reader. The two main characters from the first book are not nearly as central this time, with one of them disappearing for long periods of time. Other characters who are familiar from the Dwarf books show up and get a good number of pages.

I like these books and suspect that they would be even better in the original German.

I must admit the book has something of the great first entry of the series, which I read back in 2009. Entertaining anti-heroics with Sinthoras and Caphalor ensure that the first third of the book is good reading material, if you don't mind the älfar being edgy all the time. Political machinations regarding Sinthoras are reminiscent of the fairly subdued story of the first book, keeping the reader on the edge of the seat.

When the military campaign starts, however, the great start turns into tedium for most of the middle of the book. In the midst of all the scouting and campaigning, the author tries to inject some action into the story by introducing a new enemy. For a while the story does pick up steam from there on, and it really looks like it's going to be a four-star effort, but then...

The Acid Asspull happens. I'm not going to go below three stars because it's a decent read until that point, it's just that the author makes a Gordian knot of plotlines by the end, cuts it in half and leaves what remains dangling. The ending is the biggest letdown I have seen from Heitz after the dumb ending of the Dwarves series, make of that what you will.

Lange hab ich gebraucht, um den zweiten Teil endlich zu lesen. Jedoch liebe ich den zweiten Teil. Sein Stil fesselt mich einfach komplett und animiert mich zum Weiterlesen. Ich finde es auch toll, wie sehr sich beinahe alle Charaktere innerhalb dieses zweiten Buches weiterentwickelt haben. Trotz der Tiefe einiger Charaktere, stellen sich mir doch einige Fragen, die hoffentlich noch in Folge der nächsten Bände beantwortet werden. Die Pace in dem Buch empfand ich auch als angenehm. Vor allem die Schlachten empfand ich als überaus gut gelungen, da ich mich richtig in die Szenen hineinversetzen und komplett ins Buch eintauchen konnte. Alles in allem ein tolles Buch, allerdings einen ticken "schlechter" als Band 1, weil mir die Abenteuer von Caphalor und Sinthoras doch etwas gefehlt haben.

Unlike the first book, this story is not only about the two main character (Sinthoras and Caphalor). There are other Alfar who has its pov, like Morana who I liked the most. Also there are pov about the other side of the war, the long awaited war between our lovely bad artists and warriors and the inhabitants of the Hidden Land. I'm a bit sad that this is the last book about Sinthoras and Caphalor, since the plot of the next book happens more than 1000 years after the first two. If you want to discover more about the two friends, and after this I'm sure you will, you can start to read the Dwarves Saga.

Es gibt am Ende Drachen!! :D
Ich mag, dass man die Albae, auch wenn sie einfach nur böse sind, verstehen kann. Sie haben eine verdrehte, grausame Vorstellung von Schönheit.
Interessant fand ich, dass auch die Elben, die als ein Volk des Lichts teilweise verehrt werden, auch häufig grausam sein können. Sie können ebenso effizient töten wie die Albae. Außerdem quälen sie die Drachen, um diese zu unterwerfen.

Es geht da weiter, wo Band 1 aufgehört hat. Mitreißende Geschichte, keine langweiligen Stellen, das Tempo ist genau richtig. Neue Charaktere werden eingeführt und erfüllen ihren Zweck. Alte Charaktere werden weiterentwickelt und bleiben nicht einfach so wie sie waren. Die Story hat schöne Wendepunkte und ist nicht vorhersehbar und sorgt zudem dafür, dass man wissen möchte, wie es weitergeht.
Ich hätte das schon viel früher angehen sollen :).

Es war eine scheinbar schier unendlich lange Wartezeit bis zur Veröffentlichung des neuen Romans von Markus Heitz, Die Legenden der Albae Vernichtender Hass. Doch nun sind die bösartigen Verwandten der Elben zurück und das packender als je zuvor.

Zum Inhalt:

Der zweite Band rund um die Albae knüpft nahezu nahtlos an den ersten Band, Die Legenden der Albae Gerechter Zorn, an, spielt aber rund 1000 Sonnenzyklen vor dem ersten Zwerge Roman.

Die Albae Caphalor und Sinthoras konnten am Steinernen Torweg einen Sieg davontragen und ermöglichen somit ihrem Volk die Möglichkeit, in den Krieg gegen die verhassten Elben zu ziehen, welche sich im Geborgenen Land (Tark Draan) niedergelassen haben. Es gilt, die Barbarenstämme für sich zu gewinnen und die Elbenstämme nacheinander zu vernichten. Doch während sich das Heer der Albae sich im Kampf gegen die Elben im Geborgenen Land in Gefahr begibt droht auch der Heimat Dsôn Faimon im Jenseitigen Land (Ishím Voróo) Gefahr durch einen ausrottet geglaubten Gegner, die Dorón Ashont (Acronta), welche bereits aus dem Zwerge Romanen von Markus Heitz bekannt sind. Entscheidende Schlachten und Entwicklungen nehmen ihren Lauf, gestützt durch politische Intrigen und Verrat, welche über das Schicksal und den Fortbestand der Albae entscheiden.

Kritik:

Meiner Meinung springt Markus Heitz in diesem Roman etwas zu viel zwischen den einzelnen Schauplätzen und Figuren hin und her, mal ist man im Geborgenen Land, dann wieder im Jenseitigen Land und dann schon wieder im Geborgenen Land und das innerhalb von nur ein paar Seiten im gleichen Kapitel.

Ebenfalls ist kein wirklicher Hauptcharakter zu erkennen, was ich sehr schade finde. Ich hätte mich gefreut, wenn der Schwerpunkt wieder auf den beiden Albae Caphalor und Sinthoras gelegen hätte, welche in diesem Roman eine unglaubliche Entwicklung durchmachen und diverses erleben. Da hätte Heitz durchaus einen noch größeren Schwerpunkt drauf legen können. So springt man immer wieder zwischen Carmondai, dem Meister in Wort und Schrift, Caphalor, Sinthoras, Polòtain und vereinzelt auch zwischen Horgàta, Arviû und Morana hin und her und kann ihre Erlebnisse im Jenseitigen und Geborgenen Land hautnah miterleben, wobei, wenn überhaupt, der Hauptaugenmerk auf Carmondai liegt.

In Die Legenden der Albae Vernichtender Hass gibt es verschiedene Handlungen wie bereits oben erwähnt. Caphalor ist hauptsächlich im geborgenen Land unterwegs und kämpft gegen die verhassten Elben. Sinthoras kämpft unter anderem gegen die Elben im Geborgenen Land und hat in der Heimat Dsôn Faimon mit Verrat und Verbannung zu kämpfen was er dem Politiker Polòtain zu verdanken hat. Der Schriftsteller Carmondai begleitet den gesamten Roman über den Leser und berichtet über den Feldzug gegen die Elben und wird ebenfalls in einige Kämpfe verwickelt.

Mir wird insgesamt zu sehr im Roman zwischen den einzelnen Handlungen hin und hergesprungen. Markus Heitz hätte wie ich finde eine Handlung konsequenter verfolgen sollen und nicht mit einer anfangen, diese kurz darauf unterbrechen und mit einer anderen weiter machen bevor er dann wieder zu der Ausgangshandlung zurückspringt. Zum Teil verliert man dann doch die Übersicht. Auch die Zeitsprünge sind nicht so gut gewählt, im einen Kapitel ist man im Winter, im darauf folgenden befindet sich die Handlung wieder im Herbst. Diese zeitlichen Sprünge finde ich ebenfalls nicht so geschickt.

Da der Großteil des Romans im Geborgenen Land spielt wie ich vermutet habe, hätte ich ebenfalls eine detailliertere Karte erwartet und nicht eine absolut ungenaue Karte wie im Buch abgebildet. Ständig wird von irgendwelchen Städten und Orten berichtet doch weiß der Leser nicht, wo man sich aktuell befindet. Man befindet sich sozusagen im luftleeren Raum. Warum kann man denn nicht eine Karte des Geborgenen Landes abbilden mit ungefähren Angaben wo die Handlung gerade spielt. Es muss ja keine Tolkin’sche Karte sein à la Herr der Ringe aber detaillierter darf und muss es schon sein…

Davon mal abgesehen ist der Roman wieder sehr gut und spannend geschrieben und man konnte sich als Leser super in die einzelnen Charaktere hineinversetzen und ihre Entwicklungen, Höhen und Tiefen gut nachempfinden. Ebenfalls die Schlachten sind sehr gut geschildert.

Fazit:

Insgesamt ist der Roman Die Legenden der Albae Vernichtender Hass ein typisches Werk von Markus Heitz. Man kann sich gut in die beschriebenen Charaktere hineinversetzen, die Schlachten und Ereignisse sind gut dargestellt, die Kapitel werden immer nett durch Auszüge aus diversen Schriften der Albae eingeleitet und die Gesamthandlung ist stimmig und spannend. Doch leider fehlen mir einige Details wie eine gute Karte, eine bessere Aufklärung über die Zaubererreiche im Geborgenen Land und die Infiltration durch den Dämon, wie ist der Acronta Djer’n in das geborgene Land gelangt oder ist Morana die Mutter der Halbalbin Narmora?

Ich kann den Roman zwar uneingeschränkt weiterempfehlen und gebe ihm zwar 4/5 Sternen aber ich hätte mir durchaus ein wenig mehr Liebe zum Detail von Markus Heitz gewünscht wie er Sie u.a. bei den Zwergen gezeigt hat. Bleibt zu hoffen, dass man auf den dritten Albae Band nicht wieder so lange warten muss.

První věty knihy:
"Říká se o nich, že jsou krutější než kterýkoliv jiný národ.
Říká se o nich, že jim nenávistí k elfům, lidem trpaslíkům a všem ostatním tvorům zčernala krev v žilách a sluneční svit odhaluje tuto černou nenávist i v jejich očích.
Říká se o nich, že celou svou existenci zasvětili smrti a umění.
Říká se o nich, že vládnou černou magií.
Říká se o nich, že jsou nesmrtelní..." (str. 12)

Heitz se vrací ke svým alfům, znovu nás zve do svého světa Ishím Voróo a navazuje na Spravedlivý hněv. Alfové, rasa hrdých, nelítostných bytostí, ve své eleganci a aroganci podobným bohům, se rozhodli dobýt Skrytou zem a vyhladit své nenáviděné bratříčky elfy, kteří tam žijí. V prvním díle alfové dokázali (násilím) získat na svou stranu divoké rasy a získat si pomoc mocného démona, s obrovskou armádou pak prorazila nedobytnou Kamennou bránu, která chránila Skrytou zem před všemi nebezpečími, které by ze severu přicházelo. A nyní se alfové chystají dobýt celou Skrytou zem. V čele armády stojí nostàrojové Camphalor a Sinthoras, dva rozdílní alfové, kteří k sobě přes počáteční nevraživost vypěstovali přátelství.
Jenže kdyby vše bylo jednoduché, nebyly by to dobré legendy. Co pro nás Heitz ušil?

Alfové pomalu obsazují část Skryté země. Chtějí vyhladit nenáviděné elfy, vydobýt si v bitvách respekt. Ale možná tentokrát byli alfové až příliš arogantní. Chtějí dobýt svět, ale co se mezitím děje v Dsôn Faïmonu?

Dsôn Faïmon. Hlavní město. Černé srdce. (str. 260)

Před čím smekám je autorovo umění psát, dokáže zacházet se slovy s jemností a obratností. Píše legendu, píše báseň, píše obyčejnou hloupou situaci "ze života" a přesto je to stejně čtivé, přesto to svým způsobem strhuje. Emotivní situace jsou jedny z nejlepších částí knihy.

Stejně tak smekám před propracovaností postav. Ve všech směrech. Různorodost, vykreslení, zacházení s nimi... slovy autora postavy opravdu ožívají, dokáží získat charakter a vy si ani neuvědomíte chvíli, kdy je začnete brát jako opravdové. Strašně si cením toho, jak nádherně dokázal vylíčit tlak na psychiku a dopady tragédií, které jeho postavy pomalu měnily. Vážím si toho, jak se jeho postavy vyvíjely, chovaly se opravdově a nebyly to jen ploché charaktery. Příběh navíc nevidíme jen ze strany alfů, ale také ze strany napadeného Skrytého království, díky magusům, elfům i obyčejným lidem. Skvěle to příběh doplňuje.

Sinthoras rád stojí v centru dění a potřebuje, aby mu druzí věnovali pozornost. Caphalor je klidnější, chmurnější, uzavřenější alf, jehož smrt připravila o radost ze života. – Carmondaj (str. 56)

Své staré postavy, Caphalora a Sinthorase, podal Heitz zase skvěle, jejich charaktery se prohlubují a dokreslují do posledních detailů. U toho však autor nezůstal. Představoval nám nové postavy, což příběh skvěle oživilo. Zmíním třeba Carmondaje, Mistra obrazu i slova, který má popsat celé tažení do Tark Draanu, který vlastně naše Legendy alfů sepisuje. Ocitnout se v hlavě alfího umělce je... zajímavý zážitek. Nebo Poloténa, alfa, který je zahořklý žalem, a pro svou pomstu udělá cokoliv. Nové postavy, a přesto podané skvěle.

Zamotanost, propracovanost, promyšlenost, to knize rozhodně nechybí, ukazuje se, že skoro nic není takové, jaké se zdá a kdo ví, kdo vlastně tahá ve světě alfů doopravdy za nitky? Autor prostě umí psát. Po technické stránce mu nelze nic vytknout. A pokud mi sem tam něco nesedí, není to ani proto, že je chyba v knize. Spíše proto, že jsem měla špatnou náladu. Protože Spalující nenávist je úchvatné dílko, od obálky po obsah.

Carmondaje fascinovalo, jak silnou pohnutkou může být nenasytnost a chtivost. Podle toho lze snadno rozeznat rozdíly. Nižší duchové umírají kvůli klenotům a bohatství, naproti tomu vyšší zabíjejí ve jménu principu. (str. 18)

Vznešení, nádherní, krutí. Tentokrát alfové ale poznají na vlastní kůži, co to znamená být lovnou. I na ně sáhne ruka smrti, a to v takové míře, že to nikdo nečekal. Vše se hroutí, něco nového však i vzniká. Autor dokázal vykreslit fascinující rasu, která nám toho v malých střípcích říká strašně mnoho, rasu, která je svým způsobem jedinečná a ohromující. Popsání národů a jejich zvyků, stejně jako postavy, stejně jako styl psaní a stejně jako děj, to vše je zvládnuté bravurně a já můžu jen zatleskat Heitzovu umění. Kniha má vše, od bojů po intriky, až k lásce a přátelství. Heitz je skvělý spisovatel a jeho Legendy alfů jsou slibně vyvíjející se sérií. Pokud vám klasická fantasy alespoň vzdáleně něco říká, určitě se nebojte po Alfech sáhnout. Jsou to skvělá dílka.

Kniha se jiz nevenuje stejnym hrdinum jako predesly dil. Vystupuji zde, ovsem maji jen malo prostoru. Mame zde jine valecniky kt putuji zemi se sverenymi ukoly, aby rozpoutali chaos a co nejvice oslabili nepritele. Sem tam ztracite prehled kdo je ktery, avsak kazda postava ma svuj osud.
Domovina alfu ma potize a budoucnost neni jista.

So one thing to start, kind of unrelated to my review of the book. This app says this book is 600 pages long. It's actually 450-ish. That kind of bugged me. Now to the review:

I honestly love the race of the Alfar. They're extremely interesting and unique from Elves and Dark Elves (from other worlds). With that said, this book was not nearly as good as the Dwarf series by the same author (which I would highly suggest).

The concept was really good, and interesting how the Alfar made their way into the really of the dwarves and the humans. The Alfar and their war at home and amongst themselves was also very interesting and well told, and the more the book went on, that and the war with the Elves became what I looked forward to the most.

The worst sides of this book were anything to do with the humans, and even the magic users were some of my least favourite. They constantly seemed simple and weak. Always relying on the Elves, magicians, or dwarves to protect them. I also wish there was more about the actual war with the 5th kingdom of dwarves, but sadly they kind of skipped the entire thing.

Anyways, I'm hoping the third will be a better book. I'm hoping Heitz pulls it together nicely!!!

Don't know why

This book, and the trilogy so far, has kinda confused me. Maybe it's just because the Dwarves series was so straightforward. And good. I mean I really like the world, and the alf race makes a pretty cool character study. Really, with their similarities to elves combined with insane art and brutality, they're badass creatures. Okay, rambling. Thought the book was like 3 stars for 1st 60%, didn't really get too much into many of the characters, care what they were doing. Was like reading the first half of some epic, the conclusion building. So, it got more interesting and I want to read the next book since everything finally seemed to be going somewhere when it ended. Sorry, that's really confusing but I'm always eager to start another book!
