"Ravens, Swans, and a Girl Who Just Wanted Normal"
Dana O'Malley is exactly the kind of protagonist this genre needs more of, practical, guarded, and understandably desperate for a normal life after years in foster care. Now, she just wants to survive her last summer in foster care and get into college — not discover she has a destiny. That grounded, weary realism is what makes this book work so well. When the magic arrives (a watchful raven, a message from swans, an eccentric hippie and her folklore-loving niece), it feels earned rather than gimmicky.
Bridget Doyle, a Druid, and a college professor is a standout mentor figure and steals every scene she's in — the aging mentor is a well-worn archetype, but she's given enough specificity and warmth to feel like a real person rather than a trope. Dana's arc — learning to trust found family and a purpose bigger than herself — gives real emotional weight to the "healing the Earth” stakes. This could have felt heavy-handed, but they're woven through character moments rather than lectures.
A fully satisfying blend of contemporary struggle and mythic adventure. Perfect for fans of YA fantasy and found-family stories. Eagerly waiting for the next book in the series!

Whether a young adult or a more seasoned reader, you will go on a magical mystery tour of the lands inhabited by faeries and experience the powers they possess. While an enchanting read as Dana, the main character connects to her roots, this book also brings to the forefront what is happening to our planet. A tricky combo, to be sure, but Handley pulls it off!
