German philologist and folklorist Jakob Ludwig Karl Grimm in 1822 formulated Grimm's Law, the basis for much of modern comparative linguistics. With his brother Wilhelm Karl Grimm (1786-1859), he collected Germanic folk tales and published them as Grimm's Fairy Tales (1812-1815).

Indo-European stop consonants, represented in Germanic, underwent the regular changes that Grimm's Law describes; this law essentially states that Indo-European p shifted to Germanic f, t shifted to th, and k shifted to h. Indo-European b shifted to Germanic p, d shifted to t, and g shifted to k. Indo-European bh shifted to Germanic b, dh shifted to d, and gh shifted to g.

This jurist and mythologist also authored the monumental German Dictionary and his Deutsche Mythologie .

Briar Rose is a classic faerie tale for children from the Brothers Grimm. This is the original story of Sleeping Beauty and the tale that inspired the numerous remakes and rewrites and movies.

I really enjoyed this. I had never read the original Briar Rose story before reading this so coming across it on the app made my heart fill with joy and I settled down immediately to read it. It was the traditional tale I had always remembered, and yet, something new at the same time.

I found no qualms what so ever with Briar Rose, other than the whole, the prince came in and was like ‘hey, I’m gonna kiss this sleeping princess’. This is the reason I knocked a star off. Traditional, but it still irked me. They didn’t have to write it in. I’d recommend this to anyone who likes classics, faerie tales, or children’s stories. This one is a definite for anyone with children; it’s a good story for reading aloud.

I think this was perfect. I don’t think it was too dark and twisted, as what is usually expected from the Grimm Brothers Faerie Tales. It was short and sweet (expected), and I didn’t really get anything from this. There seemed to be no moral to the story, and it was really nice just to be able to sit and read a faerie tale without having to expect some form of lesson.

An interesting story. An evil curse makes a princess fall asleep for a hundred years.

A surprise was that the hundred years had passed, and it was not the prince who woke her up. She would have woken up, anyway.

This is one of my favourite fairy tales by the Grimm Brothers; this book has influenced so many adaptations like Disney’s Sleeping Beauty and more recent Maleficent.

This book is about a King and a Queen longing for a child and because of the Queens kindness to a fish in need he granted there wish and had a beautiful baby girl. The King and Queen wanted to invite all the fairies but only had a certain amount of places so they decided to invite all but one and did not tell her. That fairy made a surprising entrance and put a cure on the princess that on her fifteenth birthday she would prick her finger on a spinning wheel and be put to sleep for one hundred years and the fairy disappeared. The King made an order that all of the spinning wheels will be collected and burnt, to avoid the curse.
On the day of her fifteenth birthday the King and Queen were out and the princess was at the castle by herself; she went exploring in the castle and found a tower, she went up the narrow stairs to find a golden key in the door. The Princess was so excited and opened the door to find an old lady with this weird object spinning, she went it and questioned the lady about the object and begged for turn; as soon as the Princess tried the spinning wheel she pricked her finger and the fairy’s curse was completed. It wasn’t just the Princess that was put into a deep sleep but it was the whole of the castle, the King and Queen arrived just before the curse begun and was put to sleep as was all the staff, animals and even the fire stopped blazing.
So many years passed and the thorns around the palace grew so high that you couldn’t see the palace, and the stories of the Princess Briar Rose went throughout the land. So many princes have tried to fight through the thorns but none succeed. On the day of the hundredth year another prince attempted to rescue Briar Rose, but when he approached the castle there was no thorns but beautiful flowers and a magnificent castle; he astonished as he walked through into the castle everything was sleeping. As he roamed through the castle he finally found Briar Rose; amazed by her beauty he could not stop himself from kissing her. His kiss woke Briar Rose and the rest of the castle and they were wedded as soon as possible.

One of my favourite types of stories have the happily ever after; these types of books I use as an escape from reality, which is why I love fantasy because it’s something that I will never experience in real life. Most girls have always dreamt of being a princess and reading these stories allow you to get lost within the fairy tale.

I think these books would be great for the book corner in a class room for other little girls to get the same, similar or even their own experience and feelings from this beautiful tale.
From my experience in a school, fairy tales can be used within literacy however it needs to be rightly suited to the learning outcomes and objectives; for example if we were discussing adverts in literacy we could link that to Briar Rose by asking the children to create a advert for a company who wants princes to claim the reward of rescuing Briar Rose.

This book can be accessible for a range of ages, the younger children would love an adult reading this book to them, so they can go on a journey together but as the child gets older this can be used for independent reading for the child might want to go on the journey alone.

This is a great fairy tale and the book is fantastically written by the Grimm Brothers.

description

I have the complete set of the Grimm Fairy-Tales, and there are so many that I haven’t read! They are very short, as one would know, so I have decided to read each one and give them a review. Some are very vulgar, some are very cute and some don’t even make sense. Some of them are well known fairy-tales and some have never been told. Some are fairy-tales we know but are not the same because they have been downplayed for the children.

Okay, so if you have seen Disney’s Sleeping Beauty, you know what happens in this book. The actually old fairy-tale Sleeping Beauty is NOT the same as the movie (and you shouldn’t let your kids read it). But this one is pretty close to what the movie is.

Except the fairies are wise women. And there are thirteen of them (including the one who gives the curse to the poor innocent baby).

This was a story that I wouldn't have children read by themselves. Possibly read aloud to them to get the story across but honestly I think the tales that are more modernized are more appropriate for children. It wasn't really like the other grimm stories it was a happy ending, but I don't think it would captivate their attention.

I've arranged my thoughts on this rendition of Briar Rose, one of the milder versions out there, into a haiku:

"Submerged in rem sleep. . .
The dull hush of fireless breath,
Waiting to age up."

I read both The Sleeping Beauty in the Woods by Perrault and Briar Rose by the Brothers Grimm. They were pretty similar, but the Perrault version had a lot “more to the story” of life following the marriage of the Prince and Princess.

My favorite part was then the prince wisely decides not to tell his bride that she is dressed in the fashion of his great grandmother. 😅

Tot and I read the adaptation of this classic tale from Sleepy Time Stories by Christine Deverell. There is no way to individually review that story, so I'll list it here. The fairy trying to kill the princess is kind of a lot for a three year old, so I adapted that part to my own taste as well. All in all, this isn't my favorite fairy tale. I miss the Disney dragon.

Beautiful Fairy Tale!

The Brothers Grimm Version is even better than the Disney Version. Some to recommend if you want to read a quick and beautiful Brothers Grimm Fairy Tale.

As usual Brothers Grimm Fairy Tales are a little darker than the Disney version though ;-).

Sleeping Beauty is a fantasy genre written by the Grimms Brothers and illustrated by Maja Dusikovia. This story was written for children four to seven years of age. tThe Sleeping Beauty is about a queen and a king who always wanted a child. One day it was revealed that they would have a princess. When that dream came true, the king and queen threw a grand party to celebrate her arrival. Everyone one was there. All the fairies were invited excluding one. When that one fairy found out she wasn’t invited, she arrived despite being uninvited and cast death upon the princess. The other fairies could not stop the spell completely; however, they could soften the spell by allowing her to stay sleep for a hundred years. The prince found his way to sleeping beauty and kissed her to break the spell. The prince and princess lived happily ever after.
I rate “Sleeping Beauty” five stars. I enjoyed re-reading this book as an adult. I enjoyed the Prince going after what he wants and fighting his way through all obstacles to save the love of his life.
This story helps children to use their imagination. Sleeping Beauty would be a great dialog for open communication for the end of the book. I would ask the question to the students: Do you think the price and the princess lived happily ever after? Do you think they had any children and if so how many? This book would allow children to use their critical thinking skills.

A princess is cursed by an offended evil fairy to fall into a deathlike sleep for 100 years, and when the curse is fulfilled, it takes the kiss of a curious prince to break the spell.

My Disney source material read-through has led me to Sleeping Beauty, and after reading a book based on Perrault's pre-Grimm telling, I picked up this edition, reportedly the Grimm version. It was the basic story you expect from Sleeping Beauty, which very few variations. It was direct and simple in the storytelling, obviously hoping to win you over with focus on new illustrations. Unfortunately, I found the illustrations to be pretty lackluster. They were colorful and had a fair amount of detail and things to look at (like the cross-section castle scenes), but they just seemed kind of ordinary overall, and I didn't think the princess was that pretty, which seems kind of like a requirement when it comes to a character referred to as Sleeping Beauty. But it was harmless and tells the story just fine, and young readers would probably find it delightful.

This edition of the Grimms' post-Perrault version of the popular fairy tale was pretty basic in its storytelling and illustrations. I wasn't blown away by the text or the artwork, but I think young readers would probably enjoy it just fine.

This a sweet, gentle retelling of the classic tale of Sleeping Beauty. There is nothing scary in this book; no scary witch or fairy, nor any great and terrible battle at the end. Instead the prince just enters the castle because essentially the clock has run out and the thorns have transitioned to fragrant flowers. Adults might find this out of step with the Disney version that we are all familiar with, but very young children are going to appreciate this gentler version as they are really all about the 'happy ending' and not so much about the struggle.

The artwork is very nice. Maja Dusikova's soft watercolors fit a story that is geared for little ones. The maids and princes are all rosy cheeked and refined. And there are fun details of activities within the castle-- children sitting beneath tables, fleeing cooks who they have frustrated. There's not quite the brilliance and detail that you find with Paul O. Zelinsky's pages, but Dusikova's work is ever so much better than the Disney renditions which I don't think translate that well to books.

A book for younger princess lovers. Toddler on up.

: A childless king and queen have their wish for a baby granted when the queen saves a lowly fish from dying. The couple throws a feast in celebration and appreciation for the gift of their new daughter - Briar Rose - but make the mistake of leaving one of the kingdom's thirteen fairies off the guest list. This thirteenth fairy comes to the feast and curses Briar Rose that come her fifteenth year she will be wounded by a spindle and die. One of the other fairies is able to soften the curse, dooming Sleeping Beauty only to a hundred years sleep. the genre of this book would be fairytale and fantasy. the format of this book is a picture book. the reading level for this book would be middle level elementary students. this book is more of a fun book for students to read but they could make a poster of the literary elements. the theme of this book is a fairytale. i think girls will enjoy this book more but any race and socioeconomic status would enjoy this book.
