Stan Lee (born Stanley Martin Lieber) was an American writer, editor, creator of comic book superheroes, and the former president and chairman of Marvel Comics.

With several artist co-creators, most notably Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko, he co-created Spider-Man, the Fantastic Four, Thor as a superhero, the X-Men, Iron Man, the Hulk, Daredevil, the Silver Surfer, Dr. Strange, Ant-Man and the Wasp, Scarlet Witch, The Inhumans, and many other characters, introducing complex, naturalistic characters and a thoroughly shared universe into superhero comic books. He subsequently led the expansion of Marvel Comics from a small division of a publishing house to a large multimedia corporation.

Steve Ditko on the Green Goblin (GG): "(Stan) Lee wanted a movie crew to find an Egyptian-like sarcophagus containing an ancient, mythological demon that would be released and come to life…instead the Goblin’s origin is built as a mystery to be slowly unveiled; his face hidden by shadows, hinting only that he is a wealthy figure with a lust for power.” (Blake Bell, Strange and Stranger, Page 57-58). Ditko did not want GG to be 'incongruous' (a mythological figure associated with European fairy tales + Egyptian mummies does not really add up. Ditko: "I rejected Stan’s idea…A mythological demon made the whole Peter Parker/Spider-Man world a place where nothing is metaphysically impossible." (THE COMICS v12 #7 [2001] - “A Mini-History Part 1 -“The Green Goblin”). Remember: Ditko was VERY much aware of 'metaphysically impossible' worlds - he was co-creator of Dr. Strange. My summation: not only is the GG the arch-foe of SM; he may well have contributed to the growing rift between the Lee/Ditko creative team - and that is true villainy!

THE GROTESQUE ADVENTURE OF THE GREEN GOBLIN
Jul 1964.
1st appearance of mysterious supervillain The Green Goblin..in a so so story teamed with The Enforcers.
However great foreshadowing as the Goblins identity is not revealed.
Plus the Hulk in a cave.

Amazing Spider-Man #14 is the Marvel equivalent of a shit sandwich you the have the good with the Green Goblin (first appearance) and the not so good.. The Enforcers, topped off with an appearance by The Hulk.

The Hulk comes out nowhere in the very back of this comic and I wonder if Ditko chose to shoe horn him in to see how Lee would explain it!

As first appearances go The Green Goblin is a good one and feels all a bit innocent (can you get any camper than a flying rocket "broomstick*" and shooting sparks out of your fingers?) considering just how dark the relationship between Osborne and Parker gets through the years and continues in 2021 Amazing Spider-Man as I write this.

*the broomstick has good miles per gallon if the Green Goblin can travel 3,000 miles on it or does the Goblin have to make multiple gas stops along the way? I really wish the Marvel Masterworks reprinted the letters sections to see if anyone ever asked this kind of thing. Nevermind who is Kindred this the kinda thing that keeps me awake at night.

NB. Though it's hard not to love Goblin's line "I can burn my way out by making the tip of my broom-stick glow like a flaming ember" my favourite line of dialogue from this one, and there are many, many runners up, has to be "Peter is a dream-boat!". Ah the innocent 1960's.

AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #11-16, ANNUAL #1 (The Sinister Six)
*Note: A nifty READING ORDER has been provided at the end of this review

Here, Spider-Man is really allowed to come into his own as a character and achieve more of an arc than was previously possible, all for the betterment of the story.

Peter's intellect is effectively explored in greater detail, as the villains' powers force him to find creative solutions to the obstacles they present. Each story introduces him caught off guard by the new set of powers, forcing him to use his knowledge and creativity, thus setting up a rematch that shows his growth since the beginning of the issue. This newly utilized characteristic really makes Spider-Man a unique superhero and have more of an arc in each issue than before.

This growth doesn't come without consequence, as Stan also uses Peter's intellect to destroy his relationship with Betty Page (as Liz Allen becomes attracted to this very intellect). With Betty suspecting cheating, it creates a tragic irony in his strength costing him the people he loves. Thus Lee effectively expands this loose end from the previous arc, as it builds off the reveal of Betty's big secret she was keeping from Peter... which I won't dare spoil here.

Stan Lee brilliantly ties both of these arcs together, in the annual issue. Each new villain returns in this issue, along with Doctor Octopus from the first in this arc, to found the Sinister Six!
It not only is one of the best made Spider-Man issues in history, it also allows the arc to come full-circle: With the first issue re-introducing Doctor Ock, through him kidnapping Betty Page, and the Annual issue featuring Doctor Ock, once again kidnapping Betty Page, it allows the entire arc to return where it began! Thus, the formula set up in these issues (failure followed by growth) is utilized across the entire arc!

I love goblin but i never knew that he had a broomstick. Green Goblin is my favorite villain(it's September 5, maybe i will like other villains in the future more than him, who knows) and we also got hulk and the enforcers at the same time, Epic.

The introduction of the Green Goblin. I liked the story, but not so much the character. We don't really know how he came to be so formidable. He has recruited Montana, Ox, and Dan, henchmen from an earlier issue.

The ruse is that the Green Goblin has gotten a big shot Hollywood director to promise big money to both he and Spider-Man to "act" in the next movie. The director is looking for another Oscar since it's been so many years since his last.

So, all this makes sens . . . kind of. But Green Goblin decides to fight Spider-Man instead of acting. Wouldn't it have been more profitable and legal to have just gone through with the movie?

Anyhow, off the lot out in the middle of nowhere the fight takes place. The henchmen and Green Goblin lock Spidey in a cave so they can tune him up. Of course, it just happens to be the Incredible Hulk's hideout. He attacks Spider-Man, but eventually knocks the boulder covering the cave. They all escape. Spider-Man tangles and wins with the Green Goblin. End of story.

And the letters are good. :)

Ia berencana mengalahkan Spider-Man dengan merekrut the Enforcers dan membuat Spider-Man ikut dalam proyek sebuah film. Hulk yang merasa terganggu langsung menyerang Spider-Man.

I found it funny how the Hulk just appeared out of nowhere. I got a good laugh out of that one. Overall pleased with the Green Goblin’s first appearance though! I learn something new every time I read one of these comics.

(And just a bit of an update: I’ve now made it my goal to read all the comics in which any member of the Osborn family makes an appearance. This includes the Green Goblin and Liz Allan (after they get married of course). It’s a pretty hefty assignment trying to find all their appearances, but I’m up for the challenge.)

Amazing Spider-Man #14

I wasn't too disappointed moreso than perplexed.

I couldn't understand why Stan Lee forced the writing, it didn't flow or over flow like he usually does it. Steve Ditko was his usual amazing self. The Green Goblin didn't burst on the scene. It didn't snap, crackle or pop it just was the 1st appearance of the Green Goblin. Oh yeah, and the incredible Hulk was in it too. Enough said.

Read this on Comixology and it looks like the cover both there and here on Goodreads is a bit low-res. Whatever. In any case, I had a blast reading this as it’s the first appearance of the Green Goblin, and I’ve been wanting to dive more into Gobby.

Love the tie-in with Hulk and the movie-set setup. Sure, the dialogue is very dated, but it’s charming nonetheless. Spider-man really had a striking costume from the very beginning. Great classic issue.

The first appearance of the Green Goblin! This comic was a little disappointing since Green Goblin used henchmen to do his dirty work and didn't really fight Spider-Man himself at all! It was a good story though and I liked how they shrouded the Green Goblin's real identity. I can't wait to read more stories involving him and see his Goblin Glider, 'cause the broomstick just wasn't as cool!

The green goblin appears! I don't know how they'll do 300+ numbers at the rate these villains appear, though they do mention he'll come back. This was excellent and super fun.

I didn't expect to see the Hulk, but I like to see how the other characters occasionally "star" in different issues.

The origin of Spidey's archenemy is surprisingly silly and doesn't do justice to what follows in the saga with the Goblin at all. However, the story itself is alright.

Considering it’s Green Goblin’s first appearance (one of my favourite characters of all time) I didn’t enjoy this as much as I thought I would. But it was still decent enough to get 3 stars.
