You give me a paranormal romance, make it sapphic, why choose and title it with a pun? Five stars.

They Were Broommates is a short, very spicy yet also really sweet read. Do mind that by being a short read, it also means that the development of the romance happens quite quickly, there’s no slow burn here.

Thank you to Harlowe Savage for providing me with an eARC.

Why Choose When Magic Has Other Plans?

They Were Broom-Mates was a fun, sizzling, witchy read that completely embraced the chaos and chemistry of its four main characters. Amelie is a hearth witch, Regina is a renowned seer, Hestia works with illusions and keeping the town safe, and Delia is a necromancer, brewing up a delightfully mismatched coven.

Amelie’s instinct to care for everyone around her makes her a natural addition. Regina and Hestia have absolutely no problem knowing exactly what they want and going after it. Delia brings a little vulnerability to the group as she struggles with everything she’s been taught to believe about her own magic. Their differences make the coven equal parts caring, chaotic, and completely charming.

While the initial attraction between them is immediate, it never feels superficial. Their relationships gradually become something much more genuine, and the chemistry between them all is ridiculously steamy. Even when everyone is involved, the scenes never lose track of the individual connections, making the whole dynamic feel surprisingly sweet while keeping the heat dialed up.

The undead uprising gives the story plenty of plot to keep things moving beyond the romance. With Delia’s powers at the center, the four women have to stop second-guessing themselves and learn to trust their magic and each other. Seeing them all come together when their town needs them most makes for a wonderfully chaotic Halloween adventure.

This story never loses sight of the importance of being seen and accepted as you are. These four women learn how to trust what each of them brings to the coven and that they don’t have to become the same to belong together.

Huge thank you to the author for the chance to read this ARC!

I really should start reading the blurbs because I genuinely did not expect that level of smut. But now looking at the cover properly maybe I should have 😭

⭐️⭐️⭐️½

Poor Amelie really thought she was accepting a job. She was actually adopting three disaster witches, a failing magical ward, and a zombie problem 😭🧹🎃

Okay, I really liked the concept of this one! A sapphic why-choose romance set in a magical town with witches, visions, necromancy, failing wards and the dead casually deciding that staying buried is optional?? You had me.

Amelie is a kitchen witch who takes over as caretaker of the cathedral after the previous caretaker dies, and the poor woman genuinely has NO idea what she's getting herself into 😂

Living there are three very different witches, which was probably my favorite part of the story.

🔮 Regina is a seer.
💀 Delia is a necromancer.
✨ Hestia handles the illusion wards and protective magic.
🍂 And Amelie is our kitchen witch attempting to hold this increasingly unhinged household together.

I really liked that their magic wasn't interchangeable either. Each woman had her own abilities and personality, and I wish the novella had been longer because I would've happily spent more time exploring all four of them and their powers.

Regina and Hestia already have a casual relationship when Amelie arrives, and it doesn't take very long before BOTH of them start flirting with her.

Meanwhile Delia is basically off in her own little corner like:

Romance? Flirting? Absolutely not. I have ✨research✨.

She's much more withdrawn and focused on studying and understanding her powers, so naturally I was waiting for that wall to crack.

Then Regina has a vision.

The protective ward around Pumpkin Hollow is weakening, the dead are rising, and hordes of them are going to attack the town beyond the area where they're currently contained.

So obviously the logical progression is:

Drama → sex → zombies → magic → OH FUCK → somebody please call a responsible adult.

And apparently the responsible adult is Regina's sister, who sits on the Seer's Council and eventually comes in to help save everyone's asses.

One detail I actually really liked was the explanation behind the dead rising because you'd naturally look at DELIA, THE LITERAL NECROMANCER and go, ma'am???

Except it isn't actually Delia.

Her twin has the opposite ability—the power of life—and she's the one who accidentally raised the dead.

I LOVE the irony of that.

The necromancer: I didn't do it.

Everyone else: 🤨

The necromancer: FOR ONCE, I DIDN'T DO IT.

The life/death twin concept was genuinely interesting, and I would've loved more exploration of it, especially because Delia's twin isn't actually present during the story.

Eventually the magical catastrophe gets handled, nobody has to spend eternity running from the undead, and our four witches get their HEA 🥹

We even get them going on an adorable fall date together as an official foursome, followed by a group scene—which felt like the appropriate conclusion considering the entire book had basically been building toward:

Why choose one witch when apparently you can collect the whole coven? 😌

I also appreciated that the existing casual relationship between Regina and Hestia didn't turn into annoying jealousy once Amelie entered the picture. This is very much a sapphic why-choose/poly dynamic rather than three women fighting over one woman, and I liked seeing the relationship eventually settle into all four of them together.

My biggest problem is honestly that I wanted MORE.

More development between the individual women. More Delia. More exploration of their powers. More time watching Amelie find her place among them. More of the magical lore. More relationship development before we reached the HEA.

There are so many fun ideas packed into such a short novella that sometimes it felt like we were sprinting from one thing to the next when I would've happily stayed in Pumpkin Hollow longer.

Witches? Yes.
Sapphic why choose? Yes.
Necromancer who somehow isn't responsible for the zombies? Hilarious.
Magical disaster lesbians? Absolutely.
Did I want another hundred pages? Also yes.

Overall, 3.5★ for me. I liked it! The concept was probably my favorite part, and the different types of witches made the group really fun. I just think a longer book would've given the characters, relationships and magic enough room to become something I could really get obsessed with.

Still, four witches ending their supernatural crisis by going on a cute little fall date together?

As they should 🎃🧹🍂

A why choose sapphic romance in which four witches must take down the undead in order to save their cozy small town.

After the prior caretaker of Pumpkin Hollow's cathedral passes away, Amelie is called to take her place. Upon reaching the cathedral, Amelie embraces her powers as a kitchen witch and tries her hardest to welcome her new friends by making them delectable meals. Just as she is beginning to get to know her fellow witches, disaster strikes the graveyard and suddenly the undead are being animated left and right. It’s up to the four girls to utilize their magic in tandem before these creatures infect the rest of Pumpkin Hollow.

I’ve never read a book by Harlowe Savage before, so I’m glad they took a chance on me. Thank you so much Harlowe Savage for the eARC of this book!

I haven’t read very many poly romances in my day, so I was excited to dive into this one. I was super curious to see if all the girls would get together or if they would all just be Amelie’s girlfriend. It made me really happy that all four girls come together and that they love each other unconditionally after only a short time together. Their relationship may have moved a bit fast, but their personalities all blend well together, so I think they will be happy in the long run.

I thought it was really cool that each of these young women utilize their powers for the good of Pumpkin Hollow. Regina is a seer and it’s her job to record her prophecies and visions and monitor when they come to pass. Hestia is an illusion witch in charge of maintaining the border around Pumpkin Hollow that hides it from humans. Delia is a death witch who is in charge of taking care of the cemetery and any magical induced problems that may occur. Amelie’s job is essentially to take care of all of them so that they can focus on their own duties to the town and generally maintain the property. This book isn’t very long, but I appreciated how in-depth each witch’s power was.

All of their familiars are so stinking cute! As Amelie moves in, it is super sweet to see her get to know Regina, Hestia, and Delia in turn. Seeing their animal companions befriend one another immediately was so wholesome, and felt a bit like foreshadowing just how quickly their relationship would evolve. Amelie’s familiar is a ferret by the name of Truffle, and he’s so darn cute! I am a sucker for ferrets, so I fell in love with him, despite the fact that he wasn’t very important.

Another thing I thought was really cool was that two of the characters in this book are siblings to characters in another book in the series. Amelie is Rowen’s sister and he is the MMC in Hollis’s “Blood Sugar” while Delia is Rosalin’s sister who is the FMC of “Grave Expectations” by Katryna Lalock. I haven’t read either of these two books yet, but I love this connection already. Also, the rest of this series is really hyping up Rowen’s book, so I hope it is amazing.

There are three sex scenes in this one, which is a few considering how short it is, but I think they made a ton of sense. Amelie slowly tries getting intimate with her fellow witches, so each sex scene adds another witch to the party. They only got sweeter as more participants engage, and I thought their trust for one another was super wholesome.

Overall, “They Were Broommates” is a sweet and spicy why choose sapphic novella that I had a great time with. Amelie’s caretaking nature makes her relationship with Regina, Hestia, and Delia that much sweeter, and I thought it was fun getting to know these girls alongside her. I appreciate how this book had an actual conflict that the girls worked together to solve and wasn’t just pure romance vibes. I wish this one would have been a little longer, but I honestly I thought Savage did a wonderful job with the page count that she had.

Sweet, spicy, sapphic fun!

Four unique types of witches assigned to a coven, brought together by fate to stop a horde of zombies and fall for each other!

I definitely recommend for a fun, short read.

I really enjoyed the storytelling in this novella! I thought the story was well put together and flowed nicely, making everything easy to follow while still keeping me interested throughout. I liked the characters overall, and I think the author did a great job giving each of them their own personality. I especially enjoyed Delia’s character arc and seeing how her character developed throughout the story. It was nice to see her growth and how things unfolded for her as the story progressed.

Amelia was such a likable character! She was always so kind and attentive to all the witches in the house, and I really enjoyed how caring she was toward everyone around her. Regina was another favorite of mine right from the start. I loved how upfront she was throughout the story and how she wasn't afraid to speak her mind. Hestia was a total spitfire and brought some great comic relief to the story. I really enjoyed the balance between the different personalities and how they all added something to the overall experience.

My only real criticism is that some of the romance felt a little rushed, particularly when it came to Delia. I would have loved a little more time to see those relationships develop naturally and have some of those moments explored further. However, I do think this can sometimes happen with novellas since there is only so much time to develop both the characters and the romance.

Overall, I really enjoyed this read! It had likable characters, enjoyable storytelling, and a fun atmosphere that made it a great choice for spooky season. If you're looking for a shorter read with witches, a little romance, and some humor, this is definitely one to consider!

Do you have plans tonight ? Yes ? Then CANCEL and just read They Were Broommates. Amelie arrives at the cathedral of Pumpkin Hollow to take care of the otehr residents : Regina, a seer ; Hestia, an illusionist and Delia, a necromancer. This short story is equal part sweet, spicy and chaotic, making it a charming little escape from reality., which, I think, we all have been needing lately.

I really recommend it if you like your fall hot enough to warm your heart...if not more.

I was instantly onboard for this novella based on the name alone.

The entire work was witty, heartfelt, and charming. The characters seemed individualized and realistic, while still very much being whimsical and mysterious.
My only real critique is that relationships form a litttttle too fast, but even that is somewhat accounted for in the book, and is easy to move on from when you are enjoying the vibes!
Very excited to continue reading about Pumpkin Hollow in the rest of the collection's novellas!

Thank you to @HarloweSavage for the ARC copy!!

An arc read 📖

A great read! I love how all the characters are different but work so well together! With a nice amount of 🌶️🌶️ too!
The only thing I didn't like was the over use of their hair colour and maybe the type of witch they are! Both was used a lot to explain who the story was referring to.

pumpkin hollow

As an absolute smut fiend I can’t believe I’m about to say this… but I feel like the smut wasn’t necessary/took over the story 🫣 the story intertwined was interesting and I would’ve loved more but I guess that’s what the other books in the series are for. I look forward to meeting more of the characters and more of the town shenanigans.

This was such a fun read. First off, I love so much that this was not only sapphic, sapphic witches x 4, but the poly relationships and trust they had with each other was so good.

Amelie who is a kitchen witch comes to be a caretaker, but what she didn’t expect was for chaos to erupt, when the dead begins to rise. She helps the other witches find the solution, and to save their town, but along the way, finds a little magic and spice.

I loved all the characters, I love the insta love in the beginning as well as the wholesome and emotional feelings with one of the witches. I was expected to feel so touched and moved with such a cute short story but I was. I absolutely loved harlowe’s writing and descriptions, and the spice was spicing.
I loved the fun and cute ending, such a fun novella perfect for the Halloween season!

This is why I love harems! They are the best version of a found family.

I also really liked the mystery element of trying to figure out why the zombies were rising, and how they were going to come together and figure out a solution.

Super spicy novella! Honestly there should be more of these kind of books!!! I was so into it ♥️🙂‍↕️I ate this up!
My only complaint was the little plot there had - was a little repetitive. The same lines said in different ways. Plus the lust and relationships built a little too quickly for me but it is a novella.
But the spice? Hawt.
Give me 10 more.

“Oh my god, they were broommates.”

As soon as I saw the title for this book I knew I needed to read it, and that there was a HIGH probability that I would immensely enjoy it. How could I not?!?!? The title alone being a pun but also a nod to one of my favorite vines to have ever existed. It was meant to be. Genius work by Harlowe Savage 😌. PLUS, this is such a fun sapphic why choose!!! This brought great joy to my lil bi self!

They Were Broommates follows Amelie who is the newly appointed hearth witch that joins Regina- the divination witch, Hestia- the illusion witch, and Delia- the 💀 witch, at the cathedral in Pumpkin Hollow. They each have their own specialty area which helps maintain the town’s anonymity and overall protection. They work as a team and I love every single one of them 😌. Something isn’t quite right though and the 💀 are reanimating, which is something they shouldn’t be doing! And this particular variety is the kind that you don’t wanna be around as there is nothing acting as an anchor. They set out to deal with this dangerous threat and things get spicy along the way 🤭.

I loved the effortless connection they all had (Delia is a bit on the shy side and there’s a reason!!!), and that it was still distinctly different for each witch. It was a cozy, spicy, with a touch of a zombie threat. Honestly, it worked beautifully, ties in great with other books in this series, and I continue to love the pacing of these novellas!!!!

Thank you to the author for the ARC ✨

We have 4 witches who live in the cathedral - They each have their roles and different powers that together, protect their little town.

Amelie is the newest addition to the house and is a natural caretaker. Her instincts immediately tell her what each individual needs.

This is insta-lust/love, but that doesn’t bother me 🤣 especially since it's a novella and thanks to Regina.

They do have a little side quest where they have to battle the undead and we get to see how well they work together.

Quick and spicy read for spooky season- perfect for a palate cleanser
