Sean Costello is the author of nine novels and numerous screenplays. His novel Here After has been optioned to film by David Hackl, director of Saw V. Depending on the whims of his muse, Costello's novels alternate between two distinct genres: Horror and Thriller. His horror novels have drawn comparisons to the works of Stephen King, and his thrillers to those of Elmore Leonard. In the real world he's an anesthesiologist, but, if asked, he'd tell you he'd much rather be writing.

A young woman's journey to reunite with the father she never knew has her crossing paths with a brutal serial killer.
This fast paced thriller is the definition of a page turner....it will leave your finger tips smoking as you are drawn into this incredibly engaging and brutal tale.
Sean Costello is a master craftsman, offering up solidly human characters, a maniac who is more horrifying for his reality (and the nasty hobby he uses to pick up spending cash), while weaving threads concerning addiction, broken families, love, forgiveness, recovery and redemption, adding a refreshing depth that is rarely found in the genre

Highly recommended. I will be eagerly awaiting Mr. Costello's next book, while hunting down his previous ones. He's that good.

In The Silence of the Lambs by Thomas Harris a serial killer named Buffalo Bill kidnaps a US senators daughter called Catherine Martin and keeps her hostage in a dry well. In Last Call by Sean Costello a deranged serial killer name "Bobcat" kidnaps young girls keeping them hostage in a well before murdering and disposing of their remains. Is there a similarity between the stories only the reader can make that decision.

Trish loves her mum Sally, she has just purchased her first car, and has been accepted as a veterinary student. She then discovers that her dad Jim, a recovering alcoholic, is alive and Dean an old boyfriend from the past is now back in her life. It's all going so well until one day she attracts the attention of Bobcat and she must hope and pray that Jim and Dean will rescue her.

This is a very average story I read whilst recovering from a hernia operation and most certainly some of the scenes involving Bobcat made me feel somewhat uncomfortable. His hobby is to remove the teeth from his victims and create attractive jewellery trinkets for the unsuspecting tourists. The style of writing is average and simplistic and the story easy to follow as it plods along to its somewhat inevitable conclusion. I was very disappointed in this book having read on recommendation and will not be reading anymore by the author.

Ah well, Karin Slaughter's The Good Daughter was always going to be a hard act to follow. This was a simple but pretty gripping story about the highway rest stop abductor called The Dentist because he removed the teeth from his victims.

Trisha West, about to start a degree in vet science, gets a call from her ex-boyfriend, who works as a porter at Toronto General Hospital, that her father has been brought into emergency. Trisha drives the four hours to Toronto little realizing how lucky she was to avoid the clutches of the dentist.

Her father, whom she has never met but always wanted to, was once a well known musician in a rock band. Now he is a bum and alcoholic homeless person. Trisha and Dean (the ex) encourage him into a program to help him kick his habit and support him all the way. As Trisha makes her way to Toronto for her dad's one year alcohol free award she gets nabbed by the dentist at a rest stop.

After 10 days missing the cops believe she is dead but her dad and Dean take it upon themselves to find the dentist and make him pay. It was a little gruesome but not too bad. Short, but not sweet, a quick and easy read that keeps you turning the pages.

Disappointing, move on to the next

This book had a jumbled plot with a whole lotta what I call filler and fluff to make it into a novel sized story. It was like a mix of every true crime story from the news plus love story, substance abuse and additction. TOO MUCH of everything to be really good at anything.

Thank goodness in reality serial killers are relatively rare, but they are so prevalent in today’s fiction you might think they populate the planet in droves.

In Sean Costello’s Last Call, his serial killer is an evil-looking creep in his thirties who calls himself Bobcat because of the way the animal patiently stalks its prey. Sporting shaggy hair and bad teeth, Bobcat’s trademark is to roam Canada’s highways, kidnapping and torturing young women, grotesquely pulling their teeth before killing them. Then he carves images of wildcats in those teeth and sells them as fashion accessories.

A man has to make a living, doesn’t he?

You should harbor no illusion that in the realm of decadent fiction, Last Call is anything other than unoriginal and unpleasant. Even featuring a plucky young heroine to predictably save the day with the father she never knew for 20 years does not justify writing page after page of such sadism and cruelty. (Though the author has earned an extra star for his sympathetic portrayal of the father, a recovering drug and alcohol addict seeking redemption.)

I have read and enjoyed several of Sean Costello’s novels but this was not one of them. He is a talented writer who knows how to tell a story, but Last Call was a story told many times before that made me feel sick and dirty reading it.

Costello's latest novel is the ultimate combination of a thrilling page-turner and a story with heart.

The father/daughter reunion that is prominent in this novel merges brilliantly with the tale of a nasty serial-killer known as "The Dentist" and who might make Hannibal Lecter cringe a little.

Costello attacks the story with as much compassion for Trish, her alcoholic father Jim and their mutual friend Dean as he provides for the tension, suspense and utter brutality that the villain (Bobcat) provides. The reader wants to see a "happily-ever-after" for the ex-musician with a drug and drink problem who is trying to turn his life around, for the two young lovers looking like they might finally be getting back together. But Costello throws a deranged madman into the mix whose path of destruction messes it all up.

In all, this is an "unputdownable" novel certain to make you keep checking over your shoulder, and a little more leery about those rest stops along the highway....

"Hardly an open and shut case"

If you run into a serial killer called 'The Dentist' then you pretty much know how things are going to go - except this guy Bobcat has many more tricks up his sleeve. You need a strong stomach for this one. But it's worth holding onto your lunch because it's a great story, with plenty of action and a little romance. Just for good measure there's potential salvation for a faded rock star and some good old blues music thrown in to sweeten the pot. Another really good read.

Better than most so - called extreme horror books.

Although it is not extreme horror it is horror with slasher aspect and very graphic. So very close to being extreme.

Last Call is about Trish who's only been living with her mom and her mom rarely wants to talk about Trish's dad. A friend of Trish calls when a new patient has shown up at the hospital where he works. He sees a tattoo that is familiar to her dad's and gives her a call about it. Trish drives to Toronto to see if the guy is her dad or not.

There's also another character calling himself Bobcat after being inspired of the animal that often visits his property. But the media calls the guy the Dentist since he takes the teeth from the victims as souvernirs. After finding out that the patient at the hospital is Trish's father, she travels often to Toronto to get to know him better. He has spent a lot of years as homeless and as an alcoholic. But is it safe for Trish to travel a lot since there is a serial killer in the area?

Last Call is a fun and short read. Trish seemed a bit childish and naive and her father's stories from his past seemed a bit misplaced and ruined the pace. And I don't need instalove in horror which happened between Trish and some guy from her past. It ruined the amosphere a little. But besides that it was a fun serial killer horror read and I wouldn't mind it to be darker. And I want to check out more books by this author.

This wasn't too bad.

Honestly annoyed me another author lazily decided to add to the fiction heap that feed the myth that gets Rottweilers labelled as vicious and evil. Technically, the yappy little Jack Russell is more likely to be vicious. More people are attacked by that breed than Rotties.
Just for once it would be nice if an author did some real research and had a pack of dachshunds ripping someone apart, because they are in fact, a much more vicious breed.

Yes. It has a pit and a guy abducting girls. I've seen a couple of reviews comparing it to Silence of the Lambs, which is utterly ridiculous.

Bit heavy on the coincidence factor. It concentrates more one the abductions, torture and killings than the police investigation, so if you're looking for a book that has a well considered investigation, this is probably not for you.

The AA, boyfriend and parental drama stuff I found slightly irritating, but I'm pretty sure that's just me, because I tend to find that irritating in all fiction books. However, in this story I'd have definitely preferred less personal nonsense and a bit more depth to the investigation of the killer.

I wouldn't say it's as gruesome as some reviews stated but I guess that depends on what people normally read.

It's one of the only books I've come across with a R for bad language rating but I didn't notice any particularly outstanding bad language.

Like a lot of Sean Costello's books, this is a blend of two different genres. There is a rapprochement between an estranged daughter and father as well as a thriller about a sadistic serial killer. It is sometimes hard to read and yet at the same time hard to put down.

Warning: DON'T read this book…

If you're a dentist; dental student; married to a dentist; in love with a dentist; or have an aversion to dental sessions, this book is NOT for you! This is the most gruesome, chilling book by Costello that I've ever read; it ranks up there with the most chilling books by Dean Koontz or Peter Straub! You've been warned, that's all I can do for you.

Although this isn't the best example of Sean Costello's writing skill, it is an exemplar of creativity and imagination, interlaced with pitfalls and switchbacks.

Most of Costello's characters share qualities that aren't pleasant, and some may seem so unpleasant you might hope they get killed off 'real soon now'. Most of them are so well-rounded and interesting — perhaps farther than arms-length, though — that they would be welcome in future stories.

I can't say more about the scenarios or the characters without giving too much information about the story (in case you are one of us who won't listen to reason and will read it anyway), so I'll just hope you make the right choice.

As always, Sean Costello has brought us an interesting and unique tale. Fast read, interesting characters, point of view distinctly different. I wait impatiently for the next one.... 2017/10/26

Read again - still love it. If you haven't read this and Squall, you will be in for a great treat. 2022/03/12

This book reads like torture porn, but the author does warn u at the beginning so definitely heed his warning. Personally I found the book superficial, the gore was there but the characters were cliched and two dimensional and the ending was disappointing. If you’re looking for a gore fest then this book is for u, if u want something disturbing on a deeper level then look somewhere else.

Incredible read!!!

One of the best books I have read in quite awhile and I read 4-5 new books every week. The sicko bad guy is worse than you can even imagine. This one will definitely give you nightmares. Loved, loved, loved it!

This was the second book I've read by Sean Costello and this one was far different than Squall. Costello knows how to write believable and twisted characters. IRL no one is perfect, and certainly not in his books. Like real people they all have flaws, and in Last Call, we come in contact with some extremely flawed people.

I loved the way the story flowed and the way Trish found her father. It seemed a bit coincidental, but it worked. I loved the way their relationship developed and especially how hard Jim worked to get his life together for a daughter he had never known. As someone who was adopted and whose biological father left my biological mother because she was pregnant, this struck a chord.

Bobcat was one sick serial killer, using his victim's teeth to replace his own when they became rotten (Crazy glue is amazing stuff) and to make intricate carvings and selling them. When he got tired of his victims he cut them up and either fed them to his dogs or hung them in the woods in garbage bags. Yes, this man was sick, and the things he did were quite gruesome. There was quite a lot of graphic detail, so if you are squeamish, stay clear of this book.

My only complaint is that it took so long for Bobcat to abduct Trish. Not that I was bored - a lot was going on throughout the book - but it didn't occur until more than halfway through the book, and it seemed from the description that this was the meat of the story, and in actuality, I don't think it was. From that point on, things seemed to be rushed. I see that if it had occurred sooner, then things couldn't have happened the way they did, but it still felt a bit rushed all the way to the end. None of that detracted from a five-star rating, though. I'm looking forward to reading more from Sean Costello.

Don't pay any attention to those other reviewers......

Good one! If you like a tension filled serial killer story, then dig into this one. Scary and creepy.
Don't pay any attention to those reviewers who said it was too gruesome, too many cuss words....Bah!
I have read worse. Far worse. (What does that say about me? Lol!)
Back to this book. Well written, the story flowed smoothly. I wasn't bored at all. The killer really was a sicko. An interesting note about this book is it is not a police procedural, which made it somewhat different from your typical "police chase bad guy" type story.
Tight, mean, tough.....yes. Over the top gruesome......no.
If u like a gritty serial killer story, then pick this one up.
One criticism.....too short! This author seems to have a penchant for short books. Give us more! I do not shy away from a 500 plus page book, in fact I like it.

I started thinking early on in this book that I was not going to be a big fan. There are a couple of parts I found disgusting to the point of being overkill.

I read a book a couple of years ago that to me amounted to nothing more than torture porn in book form, and I begin to think this might be of the same ilk.

But as I progressed through this, I realized that the horrible parts, the ones dealing with the darkest deeds done by the villains in this book, were actually handled with as much discretion as is probably necessary in order to not cheapen the pain they cause but also not delve into torture porn.

I don’t know. It was gross at times. There is some extreme depravity. But the characterization was pretty good and the redemptive arc for a couple of characters was done pretty. At the end of the day, the story grabbed me.

Very hard to read

After reading Costello’s book Squall, I knew I had to read more of his books. But Last Call isn’t like Squall, and at times I had to put it down and take a mental health break. Not because it wasn’t a good book, but because the monster was so evil and the descriptions of his evil-doing were too graphic. Definitely couldn’t read it in the evenings, not if I wanted to sleep. But the characters were well crafted and complex, and the storyline moved along crisply, never getting bogged down.
I recommend this book to anyone who likes their thrillers fast paced and the characters well developed and likable enough to really root for (except for the bad guy, of course.)

What A Ride!

This book is not for the faint of heart. The villain is truly heinous and the imagery of the author's well-chosen words made me physically ill at times. The story is quite unique and I think there is a real beauty in other aspects of the story. I don't want to give any spoilers, so be forewarned that this excellent tale is well worth reading, as long as you can handle it.

Gripping story

This is my first book from this author and I wasn't disappointed! Fast paced with interesting that and plot. Kept me reading until the very last page. Recommend this book to all who like a good thriller!! Kudos to Sean Costello, would be great to see a sequel with an evil older or younger brother more twisted than The Dentist perhaps and out to avenge his death. Then we could find out what happens to Trish, Dean, Jim and Sal.

Pretty Horrific!

Anyone want to read a graphic horror that unfolds like the cinema? This is your book! Great storyline gives hope as the plot intensifies and spirals into darkness. This book will leave you screaming for justice in the most savage of ways. Just par for the course in this genre. Happy reading!

While this was a short read (only 3,1/2 hours) it was fast, hard hitting and a great read. For those that don't like the gory details then this isn't the book for you but those of us that follow this genre I think it was fabulous. I couldn't put it down.
