Policeman Legros

Policeman Samuel Legros was an ordinary gendarmerie until he was summoned to the church one Saturday morning. Jean-Phillip Goutier was found murdered on the steps of the Cathedral in Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

The newspapers were calling it the Ghede murder; Goutier’s corpse had been left in the same sitting position favored by the Vodou deity known as Ghede. His legs were crossed, a cigar was dangling in his mouth, and dark sunglasses sat upon his eyes.

Although Policeman Legros had only three years’ experience on the force, his superiors issued him the task of investigating the Ghede murder. They did not displace their Legros quickly arrested a suspect. But at the same time, he managed to stumble into a feud between two wealthy Haitian families with strong political ties.

The more Legros tried to shed light on the truth, the more its enemies pushed truth into the shadows. Solving this murder could be a blessing, or a curse.

I really enjoyed this fairly short book about crime in Haiti. The characters were well-developed and there was plenty of action mixed with a strong psychological element.
