When the heroes are creatures, who is the enemy?

I look down at my hands. Strings. From my fingertips are strings. I can’t see them, but I have them, without question, and tied at every end is a noose.

Sarah was created to destroy deathless creatures. But now, with the ghosts of her predecessors trapped in her mind, she is unraveling. Dark ribbons of ideas curl around her heart and ribcage, urging her to fulfill an ancient duty. The death she already promised to grant to her beloved vampire, Alex, may not be enough. As she resists, the very water that once brought her comfort seems to pulse with new, cosmic dangers.

By all accounts, Sarah should be the last of her kind. But she's been lied to. Another still exists, hiding between life and death, cautiously watching and whispering in a voice only Sarah hears. If she wants their help, she will need to earn their trust.

Against her fears, Sarah will take Alex across oceans to reunite him with his estranged maker. But what starts as a plea for shelter unfolds into something much more complex. Wounds persist. Alex has changed. Together, they have cracked the careful spiderweb of the vampire world that his maker holds dear.

As the boundaries between life, death, and the divine crumble, allegiances will be questioned. Can a violent test of self-control earn the trust of Sarah's ghostly sibling and the protection of Alex's maker? Can Sarah tame the voices in her head? And must their path to salvation be paved with more blood?

Haunted Creatures begins immediately after the first book in this series. It is a paranormal dark urban fantasy written in a crisp, imagist style. It weaves together intense gothic romance, lurking cosmic horror, and philosophical melancholy.

Grippingly Otherworldly

I recently read Deathless Creatures, the series’ first book, where main character Sarah had survived an unimaginable accident before crossing paths with revived vampire Alex. Thus, I easily reconnected with the events in Haunted Creatures, where Sarah and her sidekick Alex are at it again.

She recounts their eventful transcontinental escape from Seattle through many flights, including via an ice tunnel and a cave's portal tree, before eventually resurfacing in Paris. There, a new, strange feeling starts uncurling within her, and she traces the new sensations to a sacred mountainous cave visit, where she’d felt the presence and heard the circling voices, warning and encouraging, of the keepers before her, calling for her return. Those individual voices were now jumbled identities, suppressing her.

Sarah “consumed so many of our siblings in our cave…keep walking,” a personal voice, Ash, says in a disturbing voice, amid a reassurance from Alex who is awaiting a reply from his maker who marked him as a vampire over a century previously. Consuming them strengthened her and she would never truly die, but the disorienting identities instilled “new, dark and disturbing thoughts.”

Was it suggesting she should humanize Alex for his true death? Trustworthy and helpful? Why the warning against the river, and where did they want her to go? And they don't want them together.

What about the science experiment, by someone impatient for the next keeper, involving those who survived horrible deaths like Sarah? What about the crow’s assistance for her transition, considering more than one of her may occur simultaneously?

What happens when she faces off with Alex's vengeful maker Helen who mockingly tells her she's not the last keeper she believed, and has scores to settle with Sarah for confessing the killing of their warden Zora, in his defense? Alex may not shield her during the crashing embrace, and Ash, awed by her ability to restrain their sibling’s inclinations, is welcoming her into the mysterious Broken Place. The twists, especially before, during and after the three-quarter mark, are grippingly otherworldly.

Haunted Creatures by Katie Wilson takes readers deeper into a dark and complicated supernatural world filled with vampires, ghosts, secrets, and difficult choices. Picking up where the first book left off, the story follows Sarah as she struggles with the voices of her predecessors and the frightening possibility of becoming the very thing she fears.

What stood out to me most was Sarah's internal struggle. She's caught between what she was created to do and the people she cares about, especially Alex. Their relationship adds an emotional layer to the story, particularly as they confront his past and the complicated world of vampires. I also found the mystery surrounding Sarah's mysterious sibling interesting, as it raises even more questions about her identity and purpose.

The darker atmosphere fits the story well, and I liked how the supernatural elements connect with questions about loyalty, trust, and morality. The pacing seems more focused on building tension and exploring the characters than delivering constant action, which suits this type of gothic fantasy.

Haunted Creatures offers an intriguing mix of paranormal mystery, gothic romance, and psychological conflict. It's a promising continuation for readers who enjoy darker supernatural stories with complicated characters.

A Haunting Blend of Gothic Romance and Supernatural Mystery

Haunted Creatures continues Sarah and Alex’s dark supernatural journey, bringing together vampires, ghosts, unsettling mysteries, and a romance that has to survive considerably more than the usual relationship troubles. Although I haven’t read the first book in the Deathless Creatures series, I had no trouble following along, as the story provides enough context to make its characters and central conflicts accessible to newcomers. With strange voices invading Sarah’s mind and secrets lurking within the vampire world, the novel explores what happens when the person tasked with destroying supernatural creatures begins questioning her own purpose.

The story also gives Alex’s complicated past greater attention, particularly through the introduction of his powerful and formidable maker, Helen. The eerie atmosphere and Katie Wilson’s descriptive prose lend the narrative a haunting quality, although the slower buildup may test the patience of readers hoping for nonstop action. Fans of gothic romance, paranormal fantasy, and morally complicated supernatural characters will find plenty to sink their teeth into, especially those who enjoy watching a richly imagined world grow more mysterious with every installment.

An Intriguing Paranormal Tale

Haunted Creatures by Katie Wilson immerses the reader in a mysterious world of supernatural beings and vampire experiences. The plot is slow-paced, but it feels deliberate, delivering its themes effectively.  Sarah's role as a keeper is interestingly complicated by her internal struggles with conscience and her romantic attraction to Alex.

The story is immersive and suspenseful and keeps the reader wishing for more action at some points and deeper romance at other parts. Sarah's character is likeable for the way she plays the romantic part despite her "original" purpose, and the conflicting motives make her seem vulnerable occasionally. Although this book is a second issue in the series, it can be enjoyed as a standalone novel, but it can be enjoyed better if read alongside the first installment.

Dark secrets and paranormal suspense

Katie Wilson’s dark supernatural thriller caught my attention with its sinister atmosphere and hints of danger lurking beneath the surface.

I found HAUNTED CREATURES very interesting, and Sarah Woodward is fascinating because she's struggling to hold on to her own identity while the ghosts of previous Keepers crowd her mind, all while learning to live with extraordinary powers. That internal battle makes the danger feel personal, and that's what had me rooting for her.

Another element that appealed to me is the combination of a familiar urban setting with unsettling paranormal elements.

I’d happily recommend this book to fans of paranormal suspense who enjoy eerie settings and supernatural threats.

Dark and mysterious

HAUNTED CREATURES follows Sarah Woodward’s unsettling journey into a world where the line between humanity and monstrosity becomes increasingly difficult to recognize. Now the only living Keeper, Sarah has the power to destroy supernatural beings, but nothing is without consequences.

What I find most intriguing about this premise is the conflict within Sarah herself. As she fights the obvious supernatural threats, she's also trying to understand whether she can trust her own instincts.

The possibility that Sarah could become a threat to the people she wants to protect also adds tension to her relationship with Alex, while his complicated past makes their tomorrow even more uncertain.

Haunted Creatures is an enjoyable sequel that offers much more than the typical vampire romance. It mixes paranormal adventure, gothic mystery, emotional drama, and complicated characters into an engaging story. I especially liked Sarah’s inner struggle and how her relationship with Alex gets harder as secrets come out and the danger grows.

Another thing I liked was the way Katie Wilson expands the supernatural world even further. The story brings in mysterious caves, strange portals, ghostly voices, and questions about who the next Keeper will be.

Haunted Creatures was an excellent sequel to the previous Deathless Creatures novel. I love how much this addition to the series expanded on the inner workings of the vampire world as well as those of other deathless creatures featured in the novel.

A vampire romance with so much more to offer, I really enjoyed this read. A fun reading experience loaded with action and the paranormal, Haunted Creatures is a book I would highly recommend.

Thanks to Netgalley for this ARC Book. Haunted It delivers an atmospheric and chilling ride that keeps you hooked from the first page. With its haunting world of decay, ghostly ties, and high-stakes survival, it’s a brilliant follow-up that balances tension and dark mystery. The pacing was alittle slow and didn’t connect with a few areas but enjoyable.
