I really enjoyed learning more about Robert Frost. Fascinating story. Sometimes it was a bit dry but most of the time it gave helpful context about how he built his skills, taught in unique ways, defied tradition when it didn't seem right to him, and wrote poems that have impacted so many people. Makes me want to read more of his work.
This was pubbed right before his death so there are certainly aspects of his life that are made clearer in later biographies. I recommend as a good Introduction to Frost.
Possibly overlooked, this biography deserves a much wider audience. It was even overlooked at my house for years, before it caught my eye one day. I’m so glad to learn the whys and hows of an immensely talented writer, as poetry has generally flow under my radar, as I believe it has for many others. But then to see the ways it can communicate feelings, experiences and insights, I have a new respect for poets and poetry. The author is clearly knowledgeable about many aspects of poetry, and her takes on Frost are clear and insightful. She perhaps did not have clearance to print full poems, only parts, but nevertheless shines a light on Frost’s methods and motivations that are fascinating. Those of us interested in writing of all kinds are big fans of the behind-the-scenes details, of which this book has dozens. Very much recommended.
