Seven years after Restoration Week, the heroes and villains who went into hiding are still being hunted by the Restoration Task Force. Restoration Day has become a continental celebration of a world without Supers.
Theodore Calder's problems are considerably smaller. He's twenty-four, a college dropout, couch-crashing in his Oklahoma hometown, and newly fired from the last place in town that hadn't already fired or rejected him. His prospects have officially run dry.
Then a runaway semi barrels toward a Restoration Day parade.
Two retired Supers Theodore considers family stop it - with powers they've kept hidden for years. They save everyone in its path. And the town turns on them.
When the crowd demands answers, Theodore lies to protect them.
It doesn't keep them safe for long.
The Restoration Task Force comes for his neighbors, and Theodore has a walk away and hold on to the ordinary life he has left, or protect people his world wants gone.
Less than forty-eight hours after losing his job, Theodore Calder is a fugitive.
For a story about a world of superheroes, Son of Dust stays surprisingly grounded and really focuses on the problems that arise from a world of demigods among regular humans. The characters were wonderfully written and I enjoyed watching their friendships develop as they found common ground and learned how to trust each other. Make no mistake, this is an action-packed, gratuitously violent story with brief pauses for exploring interpersonal relationships and world-building. Neither part overstays its welcome, and I was very sad when I reached the end. Can’t wait for the sequel! I read an advance copy (still purchased the book and will re-read in the future!), and putting up with reading a pdf on my phone was well worth the trouble!
1. To know the author is to catch the all of the Easter egg names so that was a cool thing. 2. Like any good superhero story there was a slow build and then it got to a point where I couldn’t and did not want to put the book down even when I had to sleep. I’m mad at you for the ending because 😩 3. Violet made me irrationally irritated. It was very much a “dang, not you too!” and then I just needed him to stop trusting her entirely. 4. On the subject of trust, can we trust ANYBODY?! I feel like at one point we were getting backstabbed left and right and I felt like I was screaming “Nooooooo” every other page. 5. If the final battle isn’t enough for Alex to basically give us an anime level crash out? Idk what is. OVERALL I was stressed in the best and worst way and I need the next one asap.
I mean, I obviously love my book. I fell in love with the characters while writing it. I love the world and everything in it. I read it in a day. Was that cause I enjoyed it or wanted to ruthlessly critique myself? I don’t know, probably both.
