Marvel Now! adds new faces to Earth's mightiest team of superheroes! The Avengers expand their roster and sphere of influence to a global -- and even interplanetary -- level!
Jonathan Hickman is an American comic book writer and artist. He is known for creating the Image Comics series The Nightly News, The Manhattan Projects and East of West, as well as working on Marvel Comics' Fantastic Four, FF, and S.H.I.E.L.D. titles. In 2012, Hickman ended his run on the Fantastic Four titles to write The Avengers and The New Avengers, as part the "Marvel NOW!" relaunch. In 2013, Hickman wrote a six-part miniseries, Infinity, plus Avengers tie-ins for Marvel Comics. In 2015, he wrote the crossover event Secret Wars. - Wikipedia
I wont lie, I was pretty excited for this. I've been a fan of Hickman for a few years now, including both his indie and Marvel work, so him writing Avengers is something I was all for.
Like you'd except, he starts big. Literally. The first page is the Big Bang of the Marvel Universe, a page that would seem more at home in an indie series. What's great though is the captain at the top of the page: 'Previously in Avengers'. So this is a first issue, of a title that's been running for nearly 50 years, and we're starting with the big bang. Okay. I'm already on board.
The story itself see's the Avengers head to Mars, to take on (who I think is a new villain) called Ex Nihilo. He is terraforming Mars (which has surprisingly not happened yet in the Marvel U).
But what really stood out to me about this comic is how well it mixes the movies with the comics. The character designs and whole look of the comic are very in keeping with the Marvel movies, but at the same time you've got Hickman's big crazy ideas that would only work in comics. This is how the synergy should be across all the titles. For example: Iron Man's workshop looks similar to the movies, with the robot arms removing the armour, yet it takes it further and makes it more complex. Because comic books don't have budgets, so you can do what you want.
Honestly, if you only buy one Marvel NOW title: it should be this one.
This is how you make a reboot. Really promising start to the year with the Avengers! 'We have to get bigger' is the way they have chosen to start. This kind of reminds me of the transition between the animated series Justice League to JLU in the 2000s (yes I know DC is a different franchise). In doing so it gives a different, more international, more polyphonic feel to what the avengers are doing.
Writer: Jonathan Hickman Artist: Jerome Opeña Release Date: December 2012 Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️ (3/5)
Summary: Captain America and Iron Man reform the Avengers to be “bigger” — a team ready for threats beyond Earth’s scale. When an alien race called the Builders manipulates Mars, the team is quickly overpowered, forcing Cap to call in reinforcements.
Review: A visually grand but emotionally distant start. Hickman sets up his long game — structure, symbolism, and scale — but the issue lacks heart. Opeña’s art is gorgeous and cinematic, yet the script feels like a prologue more than a story.
Avengers blissfully unaware of the future form a massive team
The story is actually 3 1/2 stars, but good reads doesn’t do that so I’m giving it 4 stars, The story continues after new avengers 3 with the avengers team being the main characters from the avengers movies (interesting to see the impact the movies have on the comic since the movies were inspired by the comics) and after what happened in new avengers 3 the duplicity the secrecy of Stark is disturbing.

“I don’t want to be a destroyer of worlds, I want to build one.” -Ex Nihilo
Aleph has marked earth for destruction, and who other than the earth’s mightiest heroes to save it? I’ve read this issue many times over the years. I’ve always been fascinated by Ex Nihilo. Love how Cap is drawn in his suit here.
