What if the person you trusted most woke up wearing your face?

ALTER was supposed to be harmless.

A revolutionary neural device capable of letting couples experience intimacy from the other side, literally. For a few hours, Evan and Claire Mercer can exchange sensory perception, motor control, and physical identity before the system safely returns them to their own bodies.

They've tried it once before.

Evan hated it.

Claire wants to do it again.

On the night before their annual two-week vacation, he reluctantly agrees.

Then the power goes out.

When the lights return, Evan is still trapped inside his wife's body. Claire is still inside his.

ALTER calls it impossible. Doctors have no answers. And as hours become days, Evan discovers something far more frightening than being unable to recognize the person staring back at him in the mirror.

Claire is adapting.

She wears his clothes. Answers his phone. Uses his hands. Walks through the world with his face. And she doesn't seem nearly as desperate to switch back.

Soon Evan is forced to confront a question no technology, marriage vow, or court of law was designed to

If someone else controls your body, your voice, your fingerprints, your face, and your name...
How do you prove you're still you?

ALTER is a psychological sci-fi thriller about identity, marriage, consent, and the terrifying difference between owning your body, and controlling it.

This book is a great use of the sci-fi genre. Truly makes you think what makes you... Well you. By law? By medical understanding? In a world where your body is seen as you. Does that mean your mind? Personality isn't you? Makes you hope laws are there to safe guard us before the technology is released but what if it isn't? What choice would you make to be happy?
My only cons are these reads kinda like a play with all the dialogue made it harder to track who said what but that may just be my ADHD brain. I love ARC reading but man again I am stuck waiting for the next book longer than most and no one to talk to about it. I enjoyed it and finished in two days. It definitely holds you captive once you get started. 😉

Absolutely love this book, from the beginning it caught my attention. Throughout the book there are twists and turns that you would never expect with one of the biggest ones at the end. If you love suspense, mystery, and a good twist this book is a must read. It follows two main characters while also giving plenty of side characters back stories that draw you in and make you feel like you are a part of the book. Absolutely highly recommend and I can only imagine the final product will be even better and more amazing!
