Bones Between Us – Eliza Modiste
A grumpy cop, a fellow officer he’s been crushing on for two years, forced proximity, and a murder investigation that gets considerably more complicated than anyone anticipated. There’s plenty here to keep you turning the pages.
Told in dual POV, we follow Asher (41), a grumpy police officer, and Marisol (37), a fellow officer and single mum to a teenage daughter. Budget cuts force them into a partnership, despite Asher having his own reasons for wanting to keep his distance. When Marisol’s abusive ex-husband’s skeletal remains are discovered, the investigation quickly turns on her, putting her under suspicion and making an already complicated situation even more dangerous. What starts as a murder investigation gradually develops into something much bigger, with a serial killer on the loose.
I enjoyed the story and was invested enough to want to see how everything played out. The forced proximity worked well, and I liked seeing the relationship develop alongside the investigation. That said, the romance does lean towards insta-love, with the two getting together fairly quickly once they’re partnered up.
There were a couple of elements that didn’t quite land for me. Asher’s longstanding attraction to Marisol, particularly the way it was portrayed through his internal thoughts, occasionally felt a little overemphasised. I would have preferred a slightly more nuanced approach to his feelings, especially given that they’ve been colleagues for two years. I also found the writing a little clunky and stilted in places, which occasionally interrupted the flow of the story for me.
The book does deliver a HEA for the couple, but the wider mystery is very much left open for the next instalment. One killer is still on the loose, and the original investigation hasn’t been fully resolved, so don’t go in expecting every thread to be neatly tied up.
A note on content: There is a significant domestic violence backstory involving Marisol and her ex-husband. I’d strongly recommend checking the trigger warnings before picking this one up.
Overall, an enjoyable romantic suspense read with an interesting premise and enough intrigue to keep me invested. While a few aspects didn’t quite work for me, I’m still curious to see where the series goes next.
