Some truths aren't buried. They're hidden inside us. When grief counselor Elise Warren inherits Coldwater Hollow, the crumbling Victorian estate of her estranged father, she expects to settle his affairs and finally leave the past behind. Instead, she finds hidden journals, secret recordings, and evidence that her father’s controversial psychological treatments may have harmed more than they healed. As Elise digs deeper, fragments of her childhood begin surfacing—memories of a frightened girl named Ivy, whispered warnings from her long-missing mother, and a darkness lurking beneath the house itself. But the more Elise uncovers, the less she trusts her own mind. Someone has been inside Coldwater Hollow. Someone is watching her search for answers. And someone desperately wants one missing piece of evidence to stay buried. Because if Elise remembers what really happened twenty years ago, she may discover that the greatest mystery was never what happened to Ivy. It's who Ivy was. And the truth could destroy everything she believes about herself. The Memory House is a gripping psychological suspense novel about memory, identity, and the dangerous secrets families bury in the name of protection.

Step inside The Memory House by Mary Alford, and you can almost hear the old Victorian walls whispering their secrets. This atmospheric psychological suspense pulls readers into a haunting mystery filled with hidden rooms, buried truths, and the uneasy question of what can—and cannot—be trusted when memory itself feels uncertain. Alford creates a wonderfully Gothic mood, letting the tension build gradually so each revelation has room to land with real impact. The slower pace works in the story’s favor, reflecting the protagonist’s fragile state of mind and giving the mystery a layered, immersive feel. While readers who prefer a nonstop thriller may find the psychological elements more intricate, those details add depth and make the final disclosures even more satisfying. At its heart, the novel explores how families sometimes bury painful truths in the name of protection, and how those truths can shape identity long after the past should have stayed behind. The reveal of who Ivy truly was gives the story an emotional twist that elevates it beyond a simple mystery. Richly atmospheric, thoughtfully paced, and full of quiet tension, The Memory House is a suspenseful read that lingers like a secret you cannot quite shake.
Wow! I'm a fan of her Amish suspense novels but this new book by author Mary Alford showcases her ability to write contemporary suspense! The Memory House is a taut, psychological thriller that questions how susceptible our minds are to suggestion. Elise Warren has memories of her childhood before she and her mother left Coldwater Hollow, but she wonders if they were real or imagined. Was there another little girl named Ivy who once lived at this house? Was this why her mother took her away from Coldwater Hollow when she was ten years old? How much knowledge did her late father have about her concerns?
Alford kept me turning the pages to find answers to Elise's ever-increasing questions. I found myself enthralled with the gloomy atmosphere, unexplained happenings, and Elise's physical and emotional trauma after she returned to Coldwater Hollow. Thankfully, she had physical protection from local Deputy Reid Carver, but would her training as a counselor help her as she worked to determine truth from fiction?
If you're looking for twists, turns, and an unsettling story with ghostly vibes, grab a copy of this engaging story reminiscent of the gothic novels I've always loved!
I received a copy from the author. There was no obligation for a positive review.
Mercy, but did this book ever deliver all the Gothic Goodness I’d been craving! So atmospheric, verging on the edge of eerie but not to the hair-raising thriller level of some books. More mysterious with pockets of spooky throughout.
And the way the story develops – honestly I was so confused (in a good way!) Elise can’t remember a chunk of her childhood until she returns to a dilapidated old house she and her mother had fled twenty years earlier. I was full of questions and my imagination worked overtime, creating the most outlandish scenarios since the author was not obligingly forthcoming. Though I love the way Alford paced the mystery, teasing us with mere snippets of facts oh so gradually throughout the read. And, double mercy, that ending! Not even on my radar. At all!
‘The Memory House’ is an all-consuming, page-turner steeped in mystery with hints of romance and some gentle inspirational truths to keep things on an even keel.
Wow what a atmospheric book, without going over the top with descriptions Mary makes the mysterious Victorian house come alive. It is a book questioning whether what we remember from the past can be believed, how much is based on autosuggestion. There were many questions asked of Elise, the main character, as she unravels her childhood mental abuse. The way the story unfolds makes you want to be there to support her and you can understand why she has had difficulty remembering her past. Reid is a good supporting character and although there is a romantic attraction it is not developed but Elise knows he is someone she can 100% rely on. We all need people in our lives like this, although there is only One who is always there to support and guide, who is the same today and everyday, and who we know will never lead us astray. I was disappointed this aspect was not further developed within the storyline, especially as the Bible verse ‘ the Truth can set you free’ was referred to. Christ is that Truth not knowledge or circumstances. I received this book as a complimentary copy from Mary Alford, all these observations are purely my own
I have read several books by this author and really enjoyed them. That was one thing that made me want to read this book. The other thing that made me want to read this book was the book blurb. It sounded so interesting. This novel revolves around Elise Warren and Deputy Reid Carver. It is a psychological thriller for sure. There is no romance involved. This book was so intriguing that I read it in two days. I had a hard time putting it down. It was very mysterious and reminded me of a shorter Jaime Jo Wright novel. I was able to correctly guess the relationship between the bad guy and the deceased father of the main female character. However, that did not take away from my enjoyment of the book. There were a few places toward the end of the book where paragraphs were repeated. Overall, I would recommend this novel.
I received a complimentary copy from the author. The opinions in this review are my own.
Elise hasn't been back to her childhood home in years and when her father passes away and she inherits the place, she really isn't sure why he left it to her. Heading back home, she really is uncertain about what she will find and knows there are many secrets those walls hold, but someone will do anything they can to keep Elise from remembering the truth of her childhood and she doesn't realize the danger she is in. Working to unravel her past with the things her father has left her and the help with a local police officer, she at times isn't sure what is truth and what might be made up memories. She remembers another little girl, blue fabric and the name Ivy but others she has talked to have said there was only her and they didn't not know of anyone named Ivy. So who is this other little girl and what is her connection to Elise, her father and this house? This was a really good psychological read that kept you guessing until the end. Who was Ivy, who was Elise and who is trying to keep the truth about what happened in this house buried? Thank you to the author for the complementary novel. This review is of my own opinion and accord.
The Memory House by far is a masterpiece for the thriller readers. I am not one to read much of this genre but when it comes to Mary Alford writing it how could I say no.
The queen of suspense, mystery and thrills out does it with this one. For those who loves a psychological thriller this is a must. For those getting into this type of read, WOW. Especially at night all alone.
Elsie who has not seen her dad since she left her home at a young age must return back to it. But although she tries to remember her childhood, her childhood memories stop at 10 years old. When her father passes away she finds out he has left her the old house she grew up. But when she arrives to put things in order, something or someone doesn't leave her in peace. Things appear, people appear, and she must find out who and what this has to do with her.
Then we have Reid, the person who the 911 call went to when Elsie called for help. He is bound to protect her and help her find and piece together what keeps showing up. Only then will she find the truth. Only then will she find out who this certain person is. And only then will she know the secrets that the walls are keeping from her or revealing to her.
A must like a mentioned for thrillers of the genre. And for new readers to this author. She won't disappoint. She will have you bitting your nails and sitting glued to your seat.
I received a ARC from the author publisher. All stated here are my own. I was not required a positive comment.
I can't say I've read many psychological stories so the premise of this book had me questioning what was going on. It reminds me of a Twlight Zone episode. So bizarre, unbelievable yet interesting. I don't think I can say much else without giving away too much of the plot and spoiling your reading enjoyment. Don't be afraid to get this book, however. It will stretch your thinking. I received a copy from the author. This is my voluntary opinion.
Suspense abounds. Someone is sneaking into house Elise inherits from her Dad. A secret tunnel hidden along with other things. Reid, a cop, is assigned to keep Elise safe. And to help solve mystery. So many secrets. Who is Ivy? Choices and more choices. Eloise's Dad didn't treat her like his daughter. Treated her like a patient. Her Mother got her out of house to protect her. She became her own person. Surprises in store for you.

This book starts out with Elise Warren receiving a phone call from Daniel Harlow, her father’s attorney. Telling her that her father’s which she hasn’t seen in twenty four years has passed away. And that she is the sole heir of his estate. He also told her that she needed to come to Coldwater, Oregon to settle the estate. As soon as Elise gets to the estate strange things began happening. This is a can’t put down, page turner Psychological Thriller.
The Memory House is a brilliantly plotted psychological thriller with gothic vibes that hooked me instantly and held me captive until the very last word. This deliberately paced, fascinating exploration of memory and identity centers around Elise Warren, a grief counselor, who returns to her childhood home in rural Oregon to settle her family's estate and uncover the truth about her past. I love how Deputy Reid Carver determinedly supports Elise in her quest and how, in the end, the story offers hope for the beginning of a romantic relationship. The expertly designed, immersive setting, including a neglected Victorian estate shrouded by foreboding weather, heightens the mystery and suspense. Finely layered characters drive the story. I totally enjoyed this unputdownable read and highly recommend it. I received a copy of this book from the author/publisher with no obligation to write a positive review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Mary Alford gives her readers chills with The Memory House! Elise Warren lives her life in Oregon as grief counselor helping her patients to put the pieces together of their own life despite not being able to do so for herself. Elise gets a shocking phone call letting her know that her Father has died, leaving Elise his estate. Elise’s father Thomas Warren was a famed psychiatrist in his own right, but a lousy family man—especially with his unorthodox medical practices. As Elise enters her Father’s house, called Coldwater Hollow, where she spent the first ten years of her life, slivers of memories start rushing back that were once locked and forgotten. But nothing is as it seems, and Elise receives help from Deputy Reid Carver to help her to figure out the truth. With mysterious notes and break-ins via secret passages coming right and left, the deeper Reid digs, the more he finds out that there are ties to his police officer father. As Elise tries to piece everything together, the lines between what is memory and reality are blurred, making it difficult to see the pieces before everything becomes crystal clear.
WOW! Mary Alford and The Memory House! I have two things to say before I continue with this review: 1.) Try not to read The Memory House in the house by yourself like I did! 2.) The Memory House gave me vibes of The Girl Upstairs by Jessica R. Patch! I love the psychological ride that The Memory House gave me and that romance wasn’t part of the story, but hinted to it at the end. The psychological aspect of the story definitely had me wondering about things, in the best way. I love how Ms. Alford explored the psychological element of the plot and how dangerously it affected others. I thought that the character of Elise fit the story well and the parts about her friend Ivy made The Memory House a twisty read. My heart broke for Elise and the memories she had at the hands of her father. I loved Reid and appreciated the care and sage advice he would give Elise that he gleaned from his father. (My favorite advice that Reid’s Father gave dealt with taking the time to listen—definitely read The Memory House for all the details!) I also enjoyed the fact that there were whispers of Reid’s Father’s work years earlier that assisted in putting the pieces together. While the Faith element wasn’t explicit in the storyline, you could see it whispered between the lines when Reid spoke, especially when speaking about his Father’s Wisdom and Elise’s Family Bible. I love the lesson of knowing who you are and believing in yourself that I gleaned from The Memory House! If you are looking for a psychological thriller that teaches life lessons in the midst of mind-bending circumstances, then I highly recommend The Memory House by Mary Alford!

I would like to thank Mary Alford for letting me be a part of the Mary Alford’s Influencer Team, giving me a copy of The Memory House to review, and for giving me the information I needed for this post. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
My review is also on my blog Leslie's Library Escape.
THE MEMORY HOUSE by Mary Alford is the masterly crafted, intriguing, suspenseful story of Elise Warren and her apprehensive return to Coldwater Hallow after twenty-four years.
Elsie’s mother took her away from Coldwater Hallow when she was ten-years-old. She has only spotty memories of her time spent there and those seem to be centered around a friend named Ivy. Her mother has always been evasive about both Coldwater Hallow and Dr. Thomas Warren, a psychiatrist and her father she’s not seen or heard from since they left. Her mother was out of the country when she received the call from an attorney informing her of her father’s death and her inheritance - the house she had once lived in. He also stated that she would have to return there to finish the formalities, including finding a box left in the house. Maybe returning would help her to find the missing pieces to the puzzle of her life.
Deputy Reid Carver was the responding officer when Elsie put in the 911 call about someone being in her home. It was quite evident that someone had been in the home, but why? Reid’s instincts told him that Elsie needed help and protection. He was determined to be that someone. Time and his direct, non-judgmental persona gave Elsie reason to trust him not only to protect her, but to help her find true answers to decades old questions.
What was it that her mother was so fearful about - Coldwater Hallow or her husband? What secrets are within the walls of Coldwater Hallow? What’s the meaning behind the bits of blue ribbon that keep showing up? Who is this person that’s continuing to make their way into the house and leave tidbits of information for them to find? Is there one person or two involved in these invasions? In past events, was Reid’s father part of the problem or had he tried to find the answers as well? Can Elsie and Reid unravel the past that someone has tried so hard to keep hidden? Will Elsie find the answers she needs or will they lead her down dangerous paths? Are the emotions felt between Elsie and Reid true or just from the intense situation they are going through together?
THE MEMORY HOUSE is an amazing, can’t put down story that will have you sitting on the edge of your seat one minute and then have you pulling for feelings to grow between Elsie and Reid the next. Mary Alford gives us a magnificent, page-turning psychological thriller full of suspense, danger, hidden secrets, revelations, overcoming fear, believing and standing up for oneself, and sweet growing romance. THE MEMORY HOUSE is most definitely a FIVE STAR book that I highly recommend to everyone!
