Alex Dane knew he shouldn’t have walked into this roadside bar. His gut told him that nothing good would come from entering the rundown, clapboard establishment. When he asked for the location of the bathroom, he knew almost at once that he had made a fatal error. The guy was on him before he knew it and he was out cold on the bathroom floor. He wakes up in the bed of a tall, dark, and handsome stranger - not a bad way to wake up, he might add. Craig Finnegan was sex on two legs, and just about the sum of every wet dream he’d ever had. Alex feels drawn to the handsome stranger, but can anything like this last for the long haul? For his own safety, Alex better hope it does.
Craig Finnegan couldn’t believe his eyes when his forever, human mate walked through the door of the seediest bar in the county. He was fresh faced and naive, with no idea what pit of vipers he’d just walked into. The attack in the bathroom just about made poor Craig come unglued, he would not find his mate, just to lose him again. With Alex now firmly in his life, the first hurdle of mate-hood is crossed, but now he has to explain the paranormal world to his very human and un-paranormal mate. He’s willing to take the chance. There are many more hurdles to cross, but if they can make it, they both will have finally found their forever home.
B.A. Stretke is a Gay Romance and fiction author who publishes through Dreamspinner Press, LLC, and Amazon.com
B.A Stretke began writing as a hobby. He read his first Jane Austen novel as a teen and was instantly hooked. The age-old dream of being a novelist took hold. Now long into adulthood, and a few years as an editor under his belt, B.A. is a full-time writer. B.A. spends his days reading, engaging in sarcasm, and plotting the next storyline, often leaving little headspace for much else. He loves hiking through the Northern Michigan woods he calls home, often finding inspiration for his books. Writing and finding that perfect cup of coffee occupy the rest of his time.
B.A. Stretke lives in Northern Michigan with one royally spoiled cat and his dear friends and family.
While entertaining, this story pretty bland and the editing was atrocious. The sentences were a snarl with lots of run-ons and confusing clauses that could have been solved by some commas. It was majorly distracting. While this series suffers from this problem, this one was particularly bad. I also am growing tired of the sex scenes in the series--they always happen the same way. The claiming is always a blowjob followed immediately by jack-hammering sex and a bite that gives the bottom partner his third orgasm. I swear it's always the same. In a story that wasn't that unique, it was hard to overlook. I have read better efforts in the series and hope the next is back to a better caliber.
The "About the Author" blurb at the back of this book states that B.A. Stretke "began writing when a fifth grade teacher told him he couldn't."
Okay. While I'm all for the "work hard and prove 'em wrong" attitude, Stretke missed a key component in proving that particular teacher wrong; he never really learned how to write. Not only is this story simplistic, choppy, and redundant, the writing lacks any fluidity, the characters are wooden, the plot is dull, there's no real conflict, the dialogue is mechanical and awkward, and there's absolutely zero chemistry between the characters. I can put up with a profound lack of story building if there's some zing going on, but there's nothing there. It's instalove, the plainest, most boring kind, and any obstacle is dealt with in a jarringly abrupt manner. Like I said, no conflict. No tension. Nothing to keep the reader interested.
The writing also suffers from Stretke's lack of technical know-how. Commas are one of those rare commodities that seem to only show up precisely when they're not supposed to, as evidenced by the following:
"Craig licked the wound clean and after several minutes pulled out of Alex to drop down next to him in, what appeared to be, complete exhaustion."
Seriously, what the hell?
Some other examples of Writing Gone Wild:
"He got out of his car and locked it. He didn't always lock his car, but this seemed like a place where you needed to lock your car."
"He continued to push against the man, but the man just laughed until suddenly the man was gone."
"His wold needed to make sure Alex was well and safe. What he and his wolf desperately needed was alone time with their mate. His wolf was still pacing and on edge after the attack on his mate. He needed to reassure himself that Alex was well and safe."
Okay, man, we get it.
"...did not appear to be adverse to it."
Stretke's not the only author I've seen make this mistake recently, but it's beginning to really drive me 'round the bend.
Adverse: preventing success or development; harmful; unfavorable. Averse: having a strong dislike of or opposition to something.
It's averse. As in, not opposed.
"...looked down into his aroused stare."
"His legs quivered and he feared he may lose his balance as sensations rushed through his system."
Sensations. No further description needed. Just those ever elusive, all encompassing sensations.
"...one minute you think you don't know him and the next you want to bare his children."
Malapropism, ahoy!
bareverb: uncover (a part of the body or other thing) and expose it to view.
Okay, suffice it to say that public bathrooms are not safe for Alex. :) Craig meets Alex, his mate, while saving him from a vampire attack in a public bathroom. I enjoyed this story and how well their emotions were vividly conveyed by the author. There were a few punctuation mistakes, but overall, the storyline was interesting and I was very absorbed in the story. =)
So this book seem to have read really quickly I don’t know if it was a shorter story than the prior ones but it seems like it went by really quickly love the shifter to human aspect of the story definitely a good read
After stopping at a bar for some coffee he ends up being attacked in the bathroom. What happens next Alex never thought would happen? Craig knew the moment Alex walked into the bar that he was his Mate. After an attack on Alex Craig takes him home. Alex knows that he will never be good enough for Craig. Will Alex be able to get past the self-doubt and love Craig? Alex knows that he feels safer than he ever had when he’s with Craig. Will Craig be able to win Alex over? Will Craig be able to win his mate?
Evolution of the series has moved us to now include the North pack. Great addition to the novella series. Learn about new character's in the North pack. Not sure about the introduction to new paranormal creatures in this book or where the author is going with them. Will read on to see.
