Just East of Key West (Short Story 1 of The Florida Keys Series) by Tom Winton is another intriguing read. An absorbing short coming-of-age story that both touched and entertained me.
Something about going back into this man's past makes me think of my own glory days and what I have been missing for some time.
Reading a Winton book is sort of like going home. Maybe not the home you were raised in but the comforts that one attributes to being home. There is a warmth and honesty that reels you in.
Honestly, I read no blurb, I simply started reading. Not knowing what to expect (what lies east of Key West?), I found myself simply blown away by this. On a bridge an aging man sits down to catch fish, wondering how long he will be around, acknowledging he takes less care of his fishing gear than he should. He is going through the motions, life’s end nears … and then it changes.
This is a thoughtful, insightful and beautiful story and I highly recommend it to everyone, young and old. Tom Winton certainly knows how spin a tale that leaves the reader thoughtful for days. Well done!
