99 cent Quickie: Red “Awakening.” The first of the rainbow short reader series seemed simple enough to escape into on a cold, dark night. The price was right, the cover stimulating and the preview gave just enough away that I needed to start this series. Georgie Porgie is quite a character filled with a dark past of bullying at school, torment and abuse at the hands of his parents, and a serious misconception about what ‘love’ actually is all about. He discovered his sexuality “Awakening” in high school with a boy named “Raul.” The simplicity of the scenes were well thought out and flowed. The dialogue was real. It was almost if I was in the scene overhearing these conversations. I could visualize the descriptive images. Especially the sexual discovery scenes. Raul was his first love lost after graduation.
The story evolves dramatically as he meets “Chris,” and as they begin to develop a serious relationship, Georgie is torn by the ‘need’ for sexual attention to overcome his real desire of the love that lacks in his life.
The chronology continues, if you haven’t already become emotionally attached to Georgie at this point, chapter three will send you over the top in an almost addictive manner as he meets up with “Bob,” forges a business alliance and shares another love, which leads to sex, and eventually loss. A seriously obvious flaw in Georgies character, well written so that you feel his pain along his journey.
Finally the last chapter, homeless, lost and abandoned, “Gary” acts as his savior, but just as you think Georgie will get his first ‘Happily Ever After,’ life gets in the way and he endures a tragic break up fleeing his home, job, boyfriend and family.
I can relate to this last chapter so much at one point in my life that somewhere the author should have written, “Be careful what you wish for. Once you have it, you might not know what to do with it.” The author certainly has a well-developed character, a relevant timeline set in the 80’s with an ability to not only set the scene so that you are aware of the setting, he can most certainly describe sexual experiences.
I read the book in about 2 hours, but had to take a short break as I was emotionally attached to one scene that deeply affected my heart. I wanted to reach in the book and wrap Georgie in my arms and just tell him, “It gets better,” or “It’s not your fault.”
I have the next book on pre order, but that won’t be out until New Year’s Eve. So I bought his other book, Moments in Time: It is never too late to start over.
I look forward to reading more of Georgie in upcoming books. Problem is, I can relate to Georgie and his impulses. I want to read the next story NOW!
