Everyone trusted Dr. Ethan Cole. Patients praised him. Colleagues respected him. Emma Cole loved him.
To the outside world, Ethan is the perfect surgeon, the perfect husband, and the center of a life Emma once believed was safe.
Then the deaths begin.
As suspicious patterns emerge inside the hospital, Emma notices details no one else seems willing to question—missing records, altered charts, unexplained infections, and secrets buried beneath the spotless reputation of the man she married. The deeper she searches, the more dangerous the truth becomes.
The hospital is not the only place hiding something.
Someone has been watching her. Someone knows what happened years ago. And someone is willing to kill to make sure the truth stays buried. Emma can not decide if she is being hunted, or haunted.
Emma must decide who she can trust before she becomes the next person no one listened to.
A dark, twist-filled psychological medical thriller about marriage, obsession, betrayal, and the deadly cost of ignoring the truth.
Chelsea Whetsel is a Florida-based thriller author with a background in emergency medicine. Years spent around high-pressure medical situations gave her a firsthand look at how quickly trust, fear, and control can shift when the stakes are high.
Chelsea Whetsel started writing as a creative outlet after leaving the chaos of the emergency department every shift. She brings that tension into her medical thrillers, blending realistic hospital settings with obsession, secrets, psychological suspense, and the kind of twists that make readers question everyone.
Her debut novel, They Should Have Listened, explores what happens when the person closest to you may be hiding the most dangerous truth.
Chelsea writes thrillers designed to keep readers uneasy, suspicious, and turning pages long after they should have gone to sleep.
I genuinely don’t know how this book made it through editing and publishing. The entire thing reads like someone typed “write me a novel” into ChatGPT and hit publish. The dialogue is unnatural, the descriptions are repetitive, and the same phrases and sentence structures are used over and over and over again. I’m not even opposed to AI being used as a tool in the writing process, but there is a very big difference between using it to help you write and having it write the entire book for you. This felt painfully, distractingly obvious.
I kept waiting for it to get better. It did not. My first ever DNF.
I wanted to support this new author and I purchased this, but the writing sound like ChatGpT nonsense. Even the blurb sound like was generated with some LLM.
I really wanted to like this as a fellow nurse but unfortunately couldn’t. The writing was messy and I found myself skipping pages just to get to the end of this book.
I really wanted to like this book. Medical/hospital based psychological thrillers are right up my street and the bones of the story were really good and could have made an excellent read. However, the book really didn’t flow, some parts appeared without context, the descriptions were extremely repetitive, long and unnecessary. The dialogue between characters did not flow with punctuation missing etc meaning it was unclear who was saying what. Relationships between characters seem to develop without explanation (Emma and Ava?). The “twist” at the end was very underwhelming. I kept reading in the hope that it would all come together and perhaps the style of writing would make sense? I don’t know how it was passed by proof-readers. It didn’t make sense to me until I read multiple reviews suggesting the input of AI and then it clicked. Such a shame as I had high hopes.
Really wanted to love this but sadly Got 80 percent done and had to DNF. Too repetitive and over descriptive. Guessed the ending less than half way through as it was very predictable but also over the place.
These are just a FEW sentences I identified from a quick read ONLY of the SAMPLE. I find it truly shameful to call this your own creation when it is, at the very least, AI-assisted.
*"People think working in the emergency department makes you numb, but they are wrong. If anything, it makes you feel everything more.”
This has a very common AI rhetorical structure: “People think X, but actually Y.”
* "Every life saved. Every life lost. Every mother crying into her hands… Every child clutching a stuffed animal…” The repetition of “Every…” creates artificial emotional escalation. AI-generated fiction often uses parallel fragments like this because they produce immediate drama without requiring a concrete scene.
* “Life did not change gradually. It changed all at once.” This is especially AI-coded because of the neat binary construction: not X / Y. It sounds designed to become a highlighted Kindle quote.
* “Home. At least, that was what it felt like most days.” The isolated one-word sentence followed by a qualification is another recurring AI rhythm: statement-pause-emotional reaction
* “In the emergency department, calm was never something to trust. It was only the pause before the next thing went wrong.” This may be the strongest “AI quote” in the sample. It is extremely polished, aphoristic, and structurally perfect.
I genuinely wish I liked this book more because it has all the elements of suspense and a great foundation to be an amazing thriller. However, some things were bothersome with how the dialogue was written. It felt like it ran together instead of sectioned out and if you weren’t thoroughly paying attention, then you wouldn’t know who was talking.
The ending made no sense in regard to Emma’s connection to Lily and it felt odd that Emma named her child after Lily and even cried for her but wanted her to die all along?
Another thing that bothered me about this book is the gaps. It sounded like Emma was supposed to meet with Ava after their phone call while she was standing in the nursery with Ethan but then it just skipped over to the next thing going on ???
Adding onto that, when Lily and her friend are following Ethan to the cemetery and watching him, it feels like it came out of nowhere. Like nothing leading up to that point for it to make sense in the book.
Overall, the book left me scratching my head and left me even more confused.
This entire review has been hidden because of spoilers.
The story was alright and it kept my attention but there were a lot of grammatical errors, and the repetitiveness made me not want to rate the book higher.
I really wanted to like this book and the premise of it was good. The author however repeated herself just about every chapter. Repeated phrases, words, descriptions. It was almost like each chapter was made longer just by reintroducing the characters. How many times did I need to be told how close Ryan and Ethan were? When they met? The book probably could have been 100 pages shorter had the same words and phrases not been repeated.
Do not read. You will be disappointed. The story could’ve been great but the writing style was all over the place. Couldn’t follow dialogue, had to re-read sentences multiple times to figure out who was talking. Need a much better editor next time! Bummed because I was really looking forward to reading this one.
This was a promising debut, and I’m interested to see where this author goes from here. One of the strongest aspects of the book for me was the medical element. Knowing the author has a background in emergency medicine, those portions felt particularly natural and authentic, and I hope she continues to lean into that knowledge in future books.
There were some slower-paced and repetitive sections that made the story a little harder to push through at times, and a few of the interactions between characters didn’t feel entirely believable to me. I did enjoy the twist at the end and didn’t see it coming, although it didn’t quite have the impact I was hoping for or significantly change how I viewed the story as a whole.
Overall, I’d probably place this somewhere around 3.5 stars, but I’m rounding up because I think there is a lot of promise here for a debut novel. The author clearly has her own voice and some interesting concepts, and I would absolutely be interested in seeing how her writing develops from here. I especially hope she continues incorporating the medical world into her stories, as that felt like a real strength.
They Should Have Listened started a little slowly for me, but once it picked up, I was hooked. I thought I had predicted a few things—and then Chelsea Whetsel surprised me with a dramatic ending and one psychological detail that made me stop and go, “Okaaaay, Chelsea!” That name!
It gave me some of the twisty feeling I love in a Freida McFadden thriller, while the medical setting brought its own tension. I also loved the two preview chapters from Chelsea’s next book at the end. I’m ready to read more!
I was lucky to get an ARC copy of "They Should Have Listened." This book is fantastic! Chelsea Whetsel is a new author. If her first book was this good, imagine what will come next. I found myself saying "just one more chapter" so often. I didn't want to put it down.
You will love some characters and loathe others, but you will get caught up in their world. The twists and turns throughout this book will keep readers captivated. Are they hunted or haunted? The suspense will keep you wondering. Her descriptions of every room, house, building and situation will make you feel you are there with them.
Chelsea did an amazing job. She created characters that made you wonder who you could trust. The end will completely surprise you; it was brilliant! If you love psychological thrillers filled with secrets, suspense, twists and turns then you will love this one.
Emma Cole investigates a series of suspicious deaths at the hospital where her surgeon husband, Dr. Ethan Cole, works. Emma starts investigating on her own, facing nothing but excuses from the people around her. The eerie and strange feeling follows throughout the story despite the repetitive writing, but the ending is worth waiting for just to see how everything falls into place.
Wow! I have worked in hospital Emergency Departments and all I can say is Wow. Awesome read. Kept my attention. Was easy to read. Captivating. Kudos to the author! Sincerely hope she puts out her next book soon!
What a great read! Only took me a few days, I couldn’t put it down!! Twisty goodness…literally right to the last page!!! Looking forward to this author’s next one!
Rounding up to a 4 star read. I liked it however some parts did fall a little flat for me. I did like the very last twist at the end which was good! As a healthcare professional myself, I did find some parts slight unbelievable. However I will give this author another go for her new book!
It started off a little slow but in one night I literally read half of the book. It kept me guessing back and forth. The ending just sent me for a whirlwind so it added the last star for me great read for me!
