I liked Steph immediately. She is forty-three, tired, has grown children, a job, bills, responsibilities and absolutely no time for a secret supernatural world to turn up and demand her attention. That alone made her much more interesting to me than the usual urban fantasy heroine.
What worked best for me, though, was that she already had a life before the story began. Discovering what she can do and what was taken from her doesn’t erase the woman she has become in those years.
I also loved the messy friendship at the heart of the story. There is love, anger and betrayal, and no convenient answer about who was right. The ending completely changed where I thought the series was going. Now I need to see what Steph does next.
Definitely continuing with the series.
Recommended if you like urban fantasy with a heroine who has lived a life.

This title seemed like a good fit for me, so I requested it. I was pretty much drawn in from the beginning, and I enjoyed the trip to the end. This book has the feel of a sci-fi novel even though it is in no way a sci-fi book. LOL! I’m not sure how to describe it, but it feels like it. I didn’t mind it, just more of an observation. The only problems I really had with this was a feeling of disconnect between me and the characters and an almost surgical precision with how everything interacts with each other. It’s almost robotic. However, all that aside, I will definitely read the next installment with pleasure. Recommend. I was provided a complimentary copy which I voluntarily reviewed.

The plot threads involving lost memories and a lost life and career worked so well; after all, what parent of adult children—approaching middle age and weary of the daily grind—wouldn't want some excitement in their life? I’m eagerly looking forward to the next installment of this urban fantasy!
