Beyond Fate

Rate this book
Magic is a curse. Power is a death sentence. Fate lies beyond them all.

In the walled nation of Daor, the monthly Cleansings are a spectacle of cruelty, public exiles of those accused of being Aetherian, a bloodline feared for its ability to manipulate energy.

Zara spends her life keeping her head down, ignoring her too-sharp instincts, the dreams that feel like warnings, and a sense that the dead are watching her. She believes she can stay invisible. That her silence will keep her little brother safe.

But she was wrong.

When he is falsely accused and exiled, Zara unleashes a power not even she knew she possessed.

Now hunted, she is forced to cross beyond the wall into the Barrenlands, a scarred wasteland where monsters roam and restless souls linger. There, she awakens a dark power the ancient Aetherians swore to silence—and a fate she cannot escape.

Zara soon realises that saving her brother means embracing the very thing the Aetherians tried to bury.

Even if it costs her sanity.
Even if it costs her soul.

One would think it could hardly get worse than living in a dystopian society where children are sent to work in mines at the age of 5, the population is regularly purged to keep everyone obedient, marriages are arranged by the state, and guards enforce discipline with violence and electric rods. Apparently, it can. Zara Evelyn discovers that rather quickly when she is forced to flee the slums of Daor and venture beyond the city walls, into a world that is in many ways even more brutal - but also steeped in a fascinating history of magic and tragedy.

Beyond Fate is the first book in The Opals of Daor trilogy, blending dark fantasy with a few science-fiction touches (like the aforementioned electric rods). Kat Clark does an excellent job with Zara herself, creating a protagonist who feels complex, a bit flawed and very real. There is no invincible Mary Sue here: Zara gets hurt, makes mistakes, needs rescuing on occasion, and sometimes survives through luck as much as skill. Yet she is also resourceful, clever, stubborn and capable of punching considerably above her weight.

What really sets her apart from many standard fantasy heroines, is the darkness running through her character. Zara certainly has empathy, tries to help others and is fiercely devoted to her younger brother, but she is hardly squeamish about collateral damage. People die because of her actions, sometimes in considerable numbers, and she takes increasing amounts of pleasure from the darker side of her newly discovered magic. Clark handles that well though. Zara genuinely wants to do good, yet her brutal upbringing has clearly shaped her, and as the story progresses there are moments when you begin to wonder whether the darkness might eventually consume her. At times, I could even see echoes of the antagonist - the Emperor Balor - in Zara. (Incidentally, in my head-canon, the emperor looks exactly like Palpatine - yes, he's that level of scheming evil.)

There is, of course, romance, a touch of enemies-to-lovers, magical jewels influencing the fate of kingdoms, monsters, ancient powers and plenty of the familiar ingredients of typical fantasy stuff. But enough said - read the book! Beyond Fate is darker than the average romantasy, and that gives it a welcome freshness. I am very much looking forward to the next two books in the trilogy, and seeing whether Zara’s path leads her further into the darkness - or, hopefully, back towards the light!

ARC ebook

Zara is a young girl living in a slum, providing for a brother, who shouldn't exist due to the one child per household governing rule. By day she works in the mines along side her best friend Adam. Every full moon a cleansing of people who have powers are caught and exiled to the Barrenlands Craw or given to the Emperor. Every evening is curfew and her brother has to hide in the whispering woods to not be caught and sent to Craw and Zara will do anything to avoid this. On pairing day (when all young adults are assigned a partner by the emperor) everything goes wrong when her brother has been found and exiled. A power awakes she didn't know she had and now she is on the hunted list.

I enjoyed the story a lot. I loved the author's writing style, it was so descriptive, jarring and dark which built the grim world of this book. I was pleasantly surprised on the development of the plot and generally didn't see the twists ahead. It was clear to me who the emperor was though. The story was always moving forward, good pacing for a YA. The slow burn was exceptional and didn't overpower the main theme of the book, more a causation of the close proximity of the characters and not denying any realistic bonding through trauma events. Only kissing and fade to black chapter end.

I personally feel there were some moments where the character dialog seemed very mature for their age and that contributed to a bit of irregularities. Maybe this needed to have older characters 😬
The ending was so unexpected, I was sad and frustrated which will keep my interest peeked for the next book at a high level.

Thank you for sending me this ARC I will recommend it to all my Gen Z friends 😜

Beyond Fate pulled me into a really dark and interesting world. The dystopian setting, the magic, and everything happening beyond the walls made this such an easy book to get invested in.

I really liked Zara as a main character. She’s strong and determined, but she’s also flawed, and I liked that she didn’t feel like an unbeatable heroine. Her relationship with her brother was also one of my favorite parts because you could really see how much she was willing to risk for him.

The world-building was probably my favorite part of the book. There was so much going on with the magic, the Barrenlands, the creatures, and the history of Daor, and I liked slowly learning more about it as the story went on. There were also some twists I genuinely didn’t see coming.

The romance is definitely a slow burn, and thankfully it didn’t take over the story. There’s some tension and chemistry, but the main focus is still the fantasy, magic, and everything Zara is dealing with.

The ending definitely left me wanting to know what happens next, so I’ll be keeping an eye out for the next book.

Overall, I really enjoyed this one and would recommend it if you like dark fantasy, dystopian worlds, magic, slow-burn romance, and a story that keeps throwing new things at you.

Beyond Fate is the definition of a page-turner. It delivers excitement and intrigue at every step with dark magic, slow-burn romance, and epic world-building. The overarching plot-points keep you hooked from beginning to end, aided by characters you want to back all the way (or love to loathe) and twists you don't see coming.

The main character, Zara, is exquisitely well written – you feel every high and low along her arduous journey, root for her as she faces challenge after challenge, and share in her pain as she battles myriad enemies and obstacles. The world-building is second to none with deep and engaging lore, and a vast, sprawling dystopia that is revealed steadily throughout the story. Other characters and creatures are fleshed out in equally intricate and, where appropriate, gruesome detail. The underlying dark magic and brooding history are both uniquely crafted with real depth and mystery.

I can’t wait to see where the story goes in the next two books – consider me hooked!

The First installment in The Opals of Daor Trilogy opens up a world of cruelty and danger to any who show even the miniumal ability to wield magic. Keep your head down, stay quiet, do as you’re told and maybe you can stay hidden... stay safe. This is not the case for Zara after her younger brother is taken and Zara learns that she is exactly what her government fears most.
I recieved this story as an ARC and am providing my honest thoughts and opinions. I absolutely loved this story. The relationships between all of the characters develops in a way that is engaging and pulls you in to their world. You find yourself cheering them on, wishing they would die, and praying that they overcome the obstacles in their way.
This story is a slow burn, clean romantasy and perfect for those who love the action during the battles and not in the bedroom. The development of the relationship feels natural and not forced which is refreshing. This is a 5 star read that I can’t wait to jump into book 2!

I wish I had the words to describe my feelings on this book. Even though I received an ARC version, I found the descriptions were so precise that I could imagine the scenes like a movie in my head! I can tell you I loved it though!!

Zara’s start to finding herself really started as is fate took it personal and said: “I’m gonna dump so much negativity on this girl that she won’t want to fight for herself.” The journey she went through - WOW.

‼️Trigger warning: There are a couple of parts where there is mild child labor scenes, but not caused by familial ties and is not described in scene. There is also scenes of moderate to severe starvation.

Main themes to expect:
🙅🏻‍♀️ The heroine is the bada**
🏜️ Character Self-journey
🏰 Dystopian world

Tropes include:
🪄 Discovery of magic
🧑‍🧒 Fight for family

Some books draw you into another world; others leave you thinking about your own. Beyond Fate does both.

Kat Clark has created a vivid, immersive world that feels carefully imagined, with imagery that brings its different corners to life. There's a subtle thread of Celtic mythology woven through the story, adding another layer of intrigue to a world full of secrets, danger and discovery.

But for me, what makes this story particularly interesting is what lies beyond the fantasy. At its heart, it's a story about being different in a society that punishes difference, and the pressure to hide who you are in order to belong.

Although aimed at a YA audience, I think there's something here for readers of all ages. Depending on your own experiences, you might find yourself seeing parallels with our world, where people can still be judged, excluded or punished simply for who they are, what they believe, or the circumstances they're born into. And perhaps that's one of the lovely things about reading: we can enter a completely different world and still find something that speaks to our own.

If you enjoy dark fantasy, richly imagined worlds and stories that offer a little more to think about beneath the adventure, I'd definitely recommend giving it a read.

This is only the beginning of The Opals of Daor Trilogy, and I'm looking forward to seeing where the author takes us next

I was privileged enough to ARC read for this book and WOW did I enjoy it. The world is incredibly vivid and unique, particularly the barren lands and the creatures inside, and the characters are so compelling! You will be screaming internally at them as the plot unfolds. Especially with all the twists and turns!
The protagonist, Zara, I really enjoyed rooting for! She was complex, with a messy upbringing that leaves you desperate to find out more, and I love her relationships with the other characters.
The feel of the book was also something I really enjoyed. I loved the dark feel of the book, with its spirits, crypts, and abandoned buildings, tied together with great world building and lore.
Very much looking forward to book 2.
