Incompetent Killers #1

Unhinged Killer

Rate this book
SOME PEOPLE DIE FOR LOVE. I’D RATHER KILL FOR IT.

My new assignment is simple, which usually means it’s boring.
Enroll in an elite university, get close to the target, and wait for the order to eliminate him.
I’ve done worse for less.
Matthew Macaulay, unfortunately, isn’t boring.
There’s something darker beneath the polished persona he projects so well.
Something I’m obsessed with.
Matching with him on the masked hookup app is just a strategy to get the job done, but somewhere along the way I stop seeing him as a target.
And by the time I decide not to finish the job, it’s already too late.
Now we’re both marked, and others have been sent to fix my mistake.
To get to him, they will have to go through me.
And I will reduce the world to ashes before I let them touch him.

Unhinged Killer is a darkish MM romance set at an elite university, featuring an assassin who discovers that protecting his target is far more dangerous than eliminating him. You can secret identities, anonymous hookups, a bi-awakening, stalking as foreplay, possessiveness, mutual obsession, morally grey heroes, and a lot of steamy moments because these men can't keep it in their pants even in the face of danger.

Omw, I have SO MUCH to say🤭!!!

But before I start, can we just take a moment to admire how the author added character art to each character’s POV???!!! That is GENIUS. It genuinely elevated my reading experience. And for that alone, I’m adding a star. Yes, an entire star!

And another thing!!! Every single chapter has a dedicated song. Not just a playlist for the book, but an actual song for each chapter to set the tone and create the atmosphere while you’re reading. HOW PERFECT IS THAT??? The thought that went into the reading experience is just everything🥹

Okay, ON TO THE REVIEW!!!

Omw, I am SO glad and happy I stumbled upon this author.

The plot, the pacing, the writing, the characters, THE EVERYTHING!!! Just the tropes and the blurb were enough to catch my attention and I was CAUGHT.

Matthew is the son of a homophobic politician who gets sent to a little island to study (highkey being hidden away 👀).

Anthony is a hired assassin/hitman sent to the island to keep an eye on Matthew.

Obviously, he did a little more than that. 🤭

There is SO much passion, so much plot and the smex??? Yessssss!!! Absolutely perfect!!! And MASKED as well??? How dare I even ask for more??? I was already being spoiled!

But my favourite part has to be when Anthony said:

“You fucking belong to me,” I tell him, keeping my hand firm around his neck while I stare directly into his furious eyes. “No one touches you but me. I will follow you to the end of the fucking world and kill anyone who dares to put their hands on you, and I’ll skin alive anyone stupid enough to come near you thinking they can take what’s mine. Do you hear me?”

EXCUSE ME????? I MELTED. COMPLETELY. GONE.

I actually paused reading and started RE-READING because I needed to savour this book. I needed to eat up every single page. I didn’t want to rush through it. I wanted to experience it all over again.

AND GUESS WHAT???

I JUST REREAD THE WHOLE BOOK AGAIN.

It’s not even officially out yet and I’ve already read it TWICE. TWICE!!! That is how good this book is. I genuinely could not get enough.

I cannot wait to read more about Victor (and I am PRAYING it’s with Solomon because PLEASE, Sol needs a red arc. He was NEVER the villain in my eyes 😭) and about Elizabeth because that woman is SO BADASS. I need more of her immediately!

This was just SO PERFECT. The reading experience, the story, the characters, the chemistry, the passion, the little details the author included. EVERYTHING.

I love this author so much and honestly, if I could give this book infinite stars, I WOULD. No hesitation.

INFINITE STARS. THAT’S THE REVIEW.

I don’t have words for how good this book was. The plot, the characters, everything about this book was absolutely fantastic. I could not put it down the entire time. From the moment I started until the moment I finished the book, I was enthralled by everything happening. When you have a chance to read this book, do it!

Oh my god this was absolutely a wild ride and perfection!!
This is the story of two beautiful men who have very different lives
Anthony is a contract killer and Matthew is a student and the son of a senator who’s a very bad man!
Anthony’s contract is just to follow the target he doesn’t know that Matthew is his target not until after he met him
Anthony decides to get close to him as his friend Matthew is attracted to Anthony but keeps it under wraps because he wants to be Anthony’s friend!
They both get a good excuse to be close to each other when Matthew is invited to a kink club with masks Anthony follows as a precaution but him and Matthew have a very very first time Anthony is dressed as a ghost! Their relationship starts online anonymous texting but when ghost literally ghosts Matthew and then they meet up in the woods Matthew gets his revenge and leaves ghost behind!
They both are insane Matthew hides it well so Anthony is caught off guard when Matthew takes control! Anthony surprisingly likes it!
As Anthony is trying to complete his mission he’s falling for Matthew and when Matthew says he’s going to a club to get over ghost Anthony snaps and tells him he’s ghost! I’m so happy that didn’t deter him!
Matthew’s father is very very anti gay so he sent Anthony to watch his son to see if he interacts with any men
When Anthony is given the order to kill Matthew he ignores it because Matthew is his! His dad doesn’t take this well and sends people after him! Matthew is devastated when he finds out that his dad sent Anthony and he takes it very hard and Anthony tries so much to explain how Matthew is his no matter what!
Karmaaaaaa came for Matthew’s dad! His brother finally saw what his dad was like!
This story was so so unhinged but in the best way!
They fought hard for their hea man and it was worth every intense moment!
The spice was top tier! I loved that they were verse and they each got to live out their fantasies!!
Butttt that bonus epilogue got me it’s the perfect time jump!
What I absolutely cannot wait for is book 2/3 the clues left behind peaked my interest!!!!

Disclosure: I received a complimentary eARC of Unhinged Killer by G.T. Dípè in exchange for an honest review.

Unhinged Killer by G.T. Dípè is a darkish M/M romance releasing as the first book in the Incompetent Killers series and the author’s brilliant full-length novel debut. The story follows Anthony, an assassin whose assignment seems simple enough: enroll in an elite university, get close to his target, Matthew Macaulay, and eliminate him. But Matthew is anything of boring. Beneath his polished persona lies something dark and magnetic. When they match on a masked hookup app, the professional mission instantly spirals into mutual obsession, stalking as foreplay, and a bi-awakening that upends everything the assassin thought he knew about his body and his heart. When outside forces are sent to fix his abandoned job, these two unhinged men realize they will reduce the world to ashes before letting anyone touch each other.

Dípè delivers an absolute triumph of entertainment. It is quite simply the most hilarious, high-energy assassin-versus-target romcom you will ever read. The dialogue crackles with razor-sharp wit, perfectly balancing laugh-out-loud comedy with high-stakes danger and deeply rooted emotional damage.

The book shines in its character work and pacing. Watching Anthony lose his cool, his restraint, and his certainty over Matthew—while both men lean entirely into their chaotic, unhinged nature—is an absolute delight. Backed by a brilliant emotional arc about refusing to give up, striving to be better, and building a life together against all odds, alongside scorching heat where they literally cannot keep their hands off each other, every single page delivers.

Unhinged Killer is a phenomenal, laugh-out-loud triumph of contemporary dark romance. If you love secret identities, anonymous hookup apps, unhinged mutual obsession, and top-tier banter, this is an unmissable read.

Anyone who reads this needs to preorder this book ASAP. Girl, I bulldozed through this book in less than six hours. G.T. ate and left no crumbs. Anthony and Matthew were everything. Love, Obsession, Betrayal, Lust and fucking Murder. I could actually believe in soulmates because of this book. The plotline, its execution down to the very words used in writing this book, was perfection. I really liked how everything came together.

Anthony, oh God, this man! He was everything, even with all his hard edges and his vicious denial of his attraction to Matthew. I knew that man was a goner from the very start. He was devoted and obsessed. And let me set the record straight: he didn't do anything wrong but lie to Matthew. That almost made him lose my support, but the rebound from it was spectacular. I couldn't resist forgiving him. This man committed crimes for Mathew; he was like no one hurts his baby and gets away with it.

Mathew, my soft, stubborn baby filled with fire. He trusted so openly it honestly broke my heart. That man is what we call saints on earth. He just loved so freely that I wished I could be at the other end of his love, but at the same time I don't want that. He and Anthony are perfect together. And when he found out about everything, I almost cried for him. He deserved better from Anthony. Yes, and I am still rooting for Anthony. What can you do about it😝?

The dynamic between these two was amazing, especially in bed. Fire for fire; you just have to read it to know. The spice was 🔥. Their friends and family were fucking amazing 😍. Really came through for them. As for the other one, iykyk, may he burn in the pits of hell.

All in all, if you are looking for a book featuring an assassin and his target falling helplessly in love, then this book is definitely for you. 💗. This was an ARC Read.

This was not a book I initially had on my radar and G.T. Dípè is a new-to-me author, but I had the opportunity to participate in promoting the cover reveal for her book and as a result, got an Advanced Copy of Unhinged Killer.

This book was a total surprise to me and I really really enjoyed it! The author's writing was impeccable. The plot and storyline were very cool and the book was very steamy without taking away from the story or being performative. It was the perfect balance!

It was also incredibly refreshing to read from an author that isn't American, Canadian or Australian for once, and with an amazing cast of black characters. Characters with depth, difficult backgrounds and different socio-economic classes.
It made for a story that sucked me in from very early on and had me smash through the book in 2 seatings (which is very rare for me these days).

I also had the opportunity to interact with the author while I was reading the book and that made the experience 10 times better. G.T is such a lovely human being and I cannot recommend enough that you pick up her book and read it straight away.

I finished this in one sitting because I couldn't put it down! Ant and Matty make for a delightful pair. The first chapter hooked me instantly. GT has a phenomenal, cinematic way of narrating us through the story, and Ant was a show stealing character. The balance of a cold killer and someone who doesn't want to be late calling his mom was incredible. I loved how he slowly came to realize that he may not be as straight as he thought he was, although I do wish we had seen a little more softness from him in his own POV.
Matty, I took a little longer to warm up to because when we first meet him, he's mostly horny, but he absolutely won me over in the end. Red must be his favorite killer because he saw the red flags and said yes please ten of those. And who can blame him?
When those two were together, it was GOOD. The chemistry was clear, albeit mostly attraction based.
This story has A LOT of spice and while I expected that going in, I did find myself craving more of the soft moments between Matty and Ant rather than the spicy moments between Angel and Ghost. Some was hinted at, like Ant comforting Matty and Matty taking care of him when he's sick, but they were mentioned rather than explored on page. Also, the more they hooked up, the harder I found it to suspend my disbelief that Matty was fantazing over Ant for MONTHS and constantly stressed that he was the most beautiful man ever, yet he didn't recognise him with a mask. How many super tall, muscly Nigerians did this school have for it to be hard to arrive at the conclusion that Ant is Ghost?

More bonding moments would have helped me believe they were connected by more than just lust, and also, more depth to the secondary characters Alice, Owen and Elizabeth could have rounded off the story off better. Especially Elizabeth. She seemed to only be in the story to set up her own book, and while I respect that, I wished she'd have had more purpose or even a few bonding moments with Ant we see on the page, and not just mentioned in passing.
A few sentiments in Ant's internal monologue about how Matty is the expectation to his rules and how he never considered he could be gay but now he is felt a little repetitive toward the end. The final show down had be exited and rooting for our guys! I'm glad Matty got the ending he did. I do wish we had seen more of him forgiving Ant beyond "he sucks but I miss him", especially since we got so much regret from Ant.

All in all, this was a spicy, fun story with unique, tangible characters! Perfect for everyone who likes morally gray men, kinky smut, and a thrilling plot!

🖤 Unhinged Killer by G.T. Dípè 🖤

I NEED MORE THAN FIVE STARS FOR THIS BOOK! Seriously, where the hell am I supposed to go with a rating when a book has me this obsessed? Because Unhinged Killer was everything I could have wanted and then some!

Anthony and Matthew completely took over my brain. An assassin sent to kill his target who ends up falling so hard, so obsessively, that he'd rather bring the entire world to its knees than let anyone hurt the man he loves? Oh, I AM HERE FOR IT! Give me all the unhinged devotion, the possessiveness, the danger and the beautifully twisted obsession.

Anthony is the kind of character who makes you question your sanity for loving him as much as you do. He's a killer, he's dangerous, he's absolutely not someone you'd want to cross, but when it comes to Matthew? That devotion is on another level entirely. The shift from seeing Matthew as an assignment to seeing him as the one person he would sacrifice everything for had me completely hooked. And Matthew? He is such an important part of what makes this pairing work. Their chemistry, their connection and the intensity between them had me eating up every single moment.

The masked hookup app, the secret identities, the deadly assignment, the obsession that spirals into something neither of them can walk away from… G.T. Dípè really knew exactly what they were doing with this story. I loved the dark, dangerous atmosphere and the feeling that absolutely anything could happen. The stakes were high, the emotions were intense and the romance had me completely invested.

This is without a doubt a MORE THAN FIVE STAR READ for me. I was completely captivated, thoroughly obsessed and left wanting even more from these characters. G.T. Dípè has absolutely earned a place on my list of authors whose books I will be diving into without hesitation.

If you love dark MM romance, morally grey killers, obsessive love and couples who would happily set the world on fire for each other, then you NEED this book on your radar.

I bloody LOVED it! 🖤

This is one of those books that completely sucked me in from the beginning. I couldn’t put it down, and I could have read another 300 pages about Anthony and Matthew easily.

Anthony is such a fun character. He is so matter-of-fact about killing and also has a dark sense of humour about it that drew me in. I really enjoyed reading about him developing feelings for Matthew but trying to deny or rationalize his feelings at every turn. The author did an excellent job at portraying a true bi-awakening; it wasn’t insta-lust or insta-love for Anthony, but a very gradual process. Once he realized he loved Matthew, the devotion and possessiveness were next level, as you would expect from an assassin with so many kills under his belt. And Matthew is a ray of sunshine and so kind, even though he had to deal with the trauma of losing his mother and having a father who hates him.

Anthony and Matthew have so much chemistry. They just work together as a couple. It’s nice to see them develop a friendship outside of the physical part of their relationship. And the intimate scenes spicy! The push and pull, the giving and taking of control, the kinks…so hot!

I’ll be eagerly awaiting the next book in this series. In the meantime, I’m going to go read other titles by the author because their writing style just works.

New to me author G. T. Dípè is incredible! I decided to read their book based completely off the blurb shared on FB.

Matthew is a student at a very prestigious college off the coast of Massachusetts. He is estranged from his father, who is a political candidate for President in Nigeria. Anthony is a killer for hire. He loves his mother and sister and keeps them hidden away for safety. He doesn’t know who his target is, just that he’s on his way to school at ACCU.

This story is a PAGE TURNER!!! The heat between Anthony and Matthew is instant for Matthew. For Anthony it takes time to grow and time for him to adjust, but when he falls he falls hard. The story is super fast paced from the beginning to the end. Who is the target? Why is there a target in the first place? It is a page turner from Club Veil all the way to the end. When I took a break from my reading, I stopped at such a cliffhanger. I wasn’t sure what would happen when I dove back into the story. It felt like the story exploded from that point and for me it was a race to finish. How would it end? Let me tell you, I wasn’t expecting that ending or bonus epilogue!

I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.

I was up till 6 am today cause I couldn't stop reading. It was sooooo good 🥺🖤
At first we get to know our 2 morally grey MCs, "not gay" hitman Anthony and his target, gay af Matthew. I wanted to slap the shit out of Anthony cause of his denial at first 😑 He tried to resist his desires but he couldn't of course and OH MY GOD THE SPICE IN THIS BOOK!!! IT WAS SO FUCKING HOT! 🔥🔥🔥Stalking, hand necklaces, rimming, nipple play, delicious frotting and public sex 😍 Fucking hell it was so good. Their chemistry is off the charts.🖤
Then the plot... I was holding my breath the entire time. It was thrilling and heartbreaking 💔 And I can't not mention Elizabeth, our unhinged female side character. She was such a fun addition to the story I loved her so much 😍
If this makes me gay, I can fucking un-gay myself tomorrow.

if this is the last time I get to have him like this, I have to imprint the taste of his lips into my brain.

You might not have put a bullet in me, but you’ve just killed my will to live!

I had an amazing time reading this book, it's written so good🖤 Can't wait to read the next books in the series 😍

This is my third GT Dipe book this year, and this is my favourite. I devoured this book much quicker than I was expecting. Anthony is a successful hitman who's been sent to the US for a new job. He meets Matthew as soon as he arrives, who also just happens to be his target. As Anthony gets closer to Matthew he realises that he may not be as straight as he thinks, and he may not be able to follow through with the job.
There's some really thrilling scenes in this book, and the spice is next level, GT Dipe knows how to write a hot scene.
I particularly love that this book lives in the same world as Guarded Goalie and Blurred Boundaries, was a lovely throwback to these books. I also love the representation of gay Africans and the struggles they face.
Anthony is a great character, deeply flawed but also incredibly loveable. Then there's the wonderful Matthew, a beautiful soul - you can't but help want the best for him as you read. Great character.
This book is highly recommended!

Entertaining, and Full of Chemistry!

This was such a nice read, and I enjoyed every bit of it.

The story follows Matthew, a student at a prestigious college off the coast of Massachusetts. He is estranged from his father, who happens to be a political candidate for President in Nigeria. Then there is Anthony, a hired killer who deeply loves his mother and sister and keeps them hidden away for their safety. He doesn’t know the identity of his target, only that the person attends ACCU.

The chemistry between Matthew and Anthony was top-notch! It took Anthony a little while to come around, but when he finally did, it was lovely to watch. I guess everyone has a little bit of queer in them; sometimes, it just takes the right person to bring it out.

I also loved seeing references to characters from Guarded Goalie and Blurred Boundaries. Those little connections made the reading experience even more enjoyable.

This is a 4-star read, and I recommend it.

Thanks to the author for this ARC.

Sometimes, you pick up a book and realize within a few pages it will be five stars. Unhinged Killer was that book for me, and GT has reminded me once more why she's an auto-buy author for me.
Anthony and Matthew make for a phenomenal, morally gray power couple. GT's writing style make the words sing on the page. She once again succeeded in crafting loveable, complicated characters that feel raw and real and tangible. The spicy was HOT and it was a delight watching Anthony soften up to Matthew a little more. That gentle hook up on New Year's? SWOON! I would happily read another book about them just bonding and cuddling and existing together.
I'll be thinking about these two for a long time, and I already can't wait to fall in love with Elizabeth and hopefully get a few more glances at Matthew and Anthony in her book too!

Thank you, GT, for continuing to bless us with your incredible stores!! Please never stop creating!

Anthony and Matthew kept me up late last night because I just couldn’t sleep until I knew how their story ended. A hitman isn’t supposed to fall in love with his mark. And said mark should not be forgiving when he finds out that he was supposed to be followed and killed by the man who turned his world and heart upside down.

Plus…..Anthony is not gay. Matthew is very gay, which is why his father has a problem with him and doesn’t want to risk his political campaign by letting that knowledge become public.

These two broke my heart and then mended it. I laughed, swooned, and maybe, almost, cried a little! Unhinged Killer was unhinged (like Elizabeth) in the best way. And the epilogue was exactly what I needed!

This book was so good that I was pissed when I finished it. I wasn’t familiar with G. T. Dípè, but I will be buying her earlier novels. I will also need the next book released by tomorrow!

The pace of the story, character development and spice were top notch. All of the characters, excluding Matthew’s dad, were very likable. I was invested from the first chapter to the bonus epilogue.

Unhinged Killer is appropriately titled. Anthony is absolutely unhinged, but he became very lovable. Even though he started off with the worst intentions, he had amazing character growth. Matthew was so adorable and so very naive. My heart bled for him. He had every reason to be despondent, but I love that he was so strong. Anthony and Matthew had very intense connection.

But THAT EPILOGUE WAS HOT AF I NEEDED WATER 🤤 damn… it was steamy, sweet and absolutely made me mad that it was over I wanted more 😂 but the I did end up getting the bonus epilogue and I cried like oh my for 🥹 but it also had spice to it too yaaas love that for me I love spice 🔥

Wow! Fabulous read! Dipe does not disappoint! Matthew is a politicians son who is sent to America for schooling - and to hide him because he is gay. Anthony is a hired hitman who is sent to America for a year to observe Matthew and possibly take him out if he steps out of line (established by Matthew's politician father). These two characters were so well written and the scenes between them were scorching hot! I couldn't put this book down and pretty much read it straight through! Hope there is more to come in this series - Victor next perhaps?

1st person POV Dual
Plot 3.5/5
Spice 2.5/5
Hired killer/ target

Okay! So this one is kinda fun, Matthew is kinda hilarious and I really enjoyed his character! Anthony is more guarded but they work!

Honestly what can you do when you meet someone, end up hitting it off for the most part, and then find out he's the one you are supposed to off 😂

My only semi complaint is that the story line was kinda predictable, but it was still enjoyable!

From the very first book by G.T. Dípè, I was hooked on this author’s stories. The narrative arc, the development of the plot, and the way the characters are brought to life—it all comes together to create a wonderful book every single time. Without fail, from the first word on the opening page to the final word on the last, you find yourself completely captivated by the book, the story, and the characters.

Anthony is a trained assassin sent to kill Matthew who's father is running for president in Nigeria. His father doesn't want Matthew around because he is gay.

Anthony ends up falling for Matthew instead and cant kill him.

I enjoyed the assassin/target story line. Hopefully we will hear more on the side characters.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

I found Matthew very entertaining! He was funny and so sweet, whilst Anthony was more mysterious and brooding. 🖤

It was a good and entertaining read, even though it was maybe a tad predictable, but not in a bad way if that makes sense, it was still very exciting . And I really liked how the author shed light on LGBTQ+ rights in Nigeria.

I would absolutely recommend this book!

Thank you for the opportunity to ARC read this book! 🖤
