Ahh, finally time for a nice relaxing—what the heck?! I just got my life back to normal, and now the whole city is gettin’ torn apart by prehistoric plants, poisonous pollen, and ahhh…dangit, I ran outta P words for alliteration, so uhhh…terrible treeoids? I got a bad feeling my one true love, Poison Ivy, is behind alla this. I guess I gotta get my butt down to City Hall stat!
I really enjoyed this issue. There is more focus in this one and I like Harley being Harley again. The artwork was fantastic and truly fits this book well. Hope Olivares stays on board for a while.
“There’s only one person who’d dare to use plants to destroy Ivy’s city. An’ that’s Ivy!”
Honestly compared to the recent stuff this is a noticeable step up, I like how the bat Quinn stuff was linked with the threats Harley is forced to contend with while balancing saving the community she has been dedicating herself to and getting to Ivy at the core of this event. And the art and color work remains as chaotically beautiful as always. While this creative team is still being solicited for at least two more issues after this event crossover, I am starting to get the sneaking suspicion and hope that they are winding down. I mean an event destroying most of what Harley has been trying to keep the same and a focus on building new memories? Sounds like a new creative team to me. Now that the bat Quinn storyline has come to an end and Harley is just a regular unstable person she is ready to go back and make things right with Ivy…only for bad seeds to kick off as ancient plants erupt from the ground. Harley is quick to fight any off from hurting the Grimaldis, but she needs to get to Ivy NOW. But she is the only lunatic with a grappling hook anywhere near throatcutter hill and everyone is in desperate need of help, it’s what she’s been saying she will do this entire time and members of the community compel her into actually acting on it. Harley isn’t sure what she can do, until she notices Althea’s place is still lit up. It has its own power and air system, because of course Althea wouldn’t share the same biome as everyone else lol, and it has now become the central place for everyone to take refuge.
With the help of all of Harley’s friends, you’ve got super chicken to fly everyone around, the gun buddies to quickly search all the buildings for any stranglers, and convoy to use his powers to transport everyone while resisting talking about his origin story to get everyone to the tower! As Harley swings around she comes across Dolores on her own and resisting being saved, she is still filled with regret from when she killed the town we visiting while under the control of the deconspirator. Harley gets real for a moment, her sane side truly showing itself to calm Dolores down and remind her that she isn’t responsible and that when all of this is over she is going to set her up with a real therapist. Not someone where the word doctor is followed by “phosphorus” or “double x,” lol. But as Harley goes to help Dolores up, they instead have to roll away from gun fire as NKVDemon hunts her as to collect the bounty Savage put on any bats. I love the editors notes for this character that hasn’t shown up since 2015, great deep cut, as they continually reference his debut story in batman #445…”in stores very soon February 1, 1990.”
Harley is quick to point out to Delores that if there is anyone who should feel bad for what they are doing the this guy. He mentions that his primary motivation is money, which causes Delores to question his communist nature. He explains that mother Russia has changed and he has changed with it, Harley pointing out that when dealing with villains if you are looking for consistent ideologies you won’t find it. With the constant reminder that they also have deadly plants deal with, Harley gets Dolores to start climbing a literal beanstalk to freedom only to get a knife in her leg as according to the NKVDemon you never turn your back on him…something you would know of you read his debut in batman 445, lol. Harley rips the knife out kicking the demon away so she can climb up with a Dolores who is still unsure of her action. The demon rushes in and tackles Harley. Just as he is about to slice her head off to bring to Savage, Dolores has flashes of her killing and jumps from the tree to tackle the demon off to protect her neighbor. Harley is able to grab Dolores as the demon goes flying, with the added hope that saving Harley challenges her negative core beliefs. Harley now has a a set path to Nowegosoe tower where the expected and thankfully quick confrontation with Althea goes down as Harley points out:
“If I can admit that the only way to save our neighborhood is to embrace this ugly stupid building I hate, then you can admit that these people are the only things in the neighborhood that deserves saving.”
But then Mayfly notices that Richie may be here but his grandma isn’t. So now Harley has to walk back to the apartment, now coughing herself from the changing conditions, to try and drag Helga out of her house. Helga and her dog both had oxygen masks as she is content to die where she was born and was married. But as Harley literally drags her out of the window, her stubborn nature no longer endearing, the moment they fall out into the street a giant plant rips from the ground and splits the house in two. Helga is convinced to go with Harley now, lol. The final part of this issue has the community actually united, this feels like the natural final spot for the storyline this creative team started with and has been puttering along to get to. And now Harley swings off into the night to meet up with Ivy. I truly hope Harley and her relationship with Ivy will become a driving force for helping this event come to a conclusion. But I have a sneaking suspicion these tie ins from the Harley side will have little impact. But the human element of this story was quite nice.

It's been a while since I picked up a Harley comic. And honestly, this issue did feel closer to the vol 1~2 Harley that I really loved, with her being a protector, and having made some friends. I'm not sure if that's enough for me to pick up this comic again, but we'll see.
