Unmasking The Mummy: A Monsters and Masks Novella

Rate this book
An archaeologist haunted by an ancient mistake falls for the mysterious stranger next door—only to discover their love story began over two thousand years ago.

Merytamun "Mary" has spent her career uncovering Egypt's past.

But after a disastrous excavation awakens something that should have remained buried, nothing feels right anymore. The stars have changed. An impossible fifth canopic jar refuses to leave her thoughts. And the mummy she uncovered seems determined to follow her home.

Then her new neighbor moves in.

Kind, handsome, and hopelessly out of his depth in New York City, Kayvon should be the perfect distraction from Mary's spiraling obsession. Between rooftop stargazing, pizza dates, museums, and Halloween costumes, falling for him feels effortless. More unsettling still, every moment together feels strangely familiar... as though they've loved each other before.

As ancient forces awaken and forgotten forces begin to stir, Mary and Kayvon discover they're connected by a history older than memory itself. To save the world from a darkness that once nearly consumed it, they'll have to uncover the truth buried beneath centuries of lies—even if it means confronting the lives they left behind.

Unmasking the Mummy is a steamy paranormal romance filled with ancient Egyptian mysteries, Persian mythology, reincarnated lovers, rooftop stargazing, museum adventures, cursed tombs, and enough sizzling chemistry to awaken the dead. HEA guaranteed.

⭐⭐⭐⭐½ 4.5/5

I received an ARC from the author and went into Unmasking the Mummy expecting a fun, quick novella and came away genuinely impressed by just how much story it manages to tell in 96 pages. It reminded me not to underestimate a story before I've actually stepped inside it!

Mary is an Egyptologist living in New York whose growing obsession with a recent excavation has left her increasingly isolated outside of work. When she meets her new neighbor Kayvon, a Persian professor at the same University, there's an immediate sense of recognition between them that neither can quite explain. What begins as an easy connection between two people quickly becomes tangled with an ancient threat, past lives, and histories neither of them fully remembers.

One of my favorite things about this novella was how efficiently it used its limited space. The pacing is quick, but the story never felt hurried. Small details are planted early and allowed to sit quietly until later revelations give them new meaning. Even the accelerated romance worked for me because the story gives that immediate familiarity an actual narrative foundation rather than simply asking the reader to accept insta-love.

I also really enjoyed the way the Egyptian and Persian elements were incorporated. The mythology wasn't delivered through long explanations or information dumps. Instead, we learn what matters as Mary and Kayvon encounter it, remember it, and figure out how they fit within it. The story trusts the reader to bring some basic familiarity with ideas like Egyptian tombs, mummies, archaeological digs, and curses, which leaves more room for the characters and central mystery.

Mary and Kayvon were equally enjoyable outside of their supernatural connection. Their dialogue felt natural, their present-day relationship had its own identity, and I appreciated that neither felt reduced to a caricature of their respective cultures. Their intimate scenes also felt like natural extensions of the relationship rather than interruptions to the story.

What impressed me most is that I never felt this story needed to be longer. It tells the story it came to tell and completes it satisfyingly. That said, I absolutely wanted more because I enjoyed Mary and Kayvon enough that I could easily see myself following them through an entire series of supernatural adventures!

"Do not weep, my love. Fate has given us a second chance.”

This is such a cute and short little meet-cute that involves reincarnated lovers and curses. At right about 100 pages, you can quickly devour the plot, the unrelenting chemistry between the two main characters, and the climactic happily ever after they both deserve. This is my first read from Masse, but definitely won’t be my last as I was quickly engulfed in the Star-crossed lovers trope that worked well for this mummified love story.

*spoilers*
Mary has spent a good chunk of her life uncovering the secrets of Egypt. During an excavation, Mary accidentally awakens something that was not meant to wake up as she notices a dark figure before leaving the site. After leaving the site, she feels like she needs to end this chapter of her life and lean away from the tombs and curses. Back at home, she cuddles up with her lovely kitty when she hears someone moving in next door. It’s then that she meets the attractive man moving in named Kayvon.

He’s handsome. He’s charming. He appears to be the exact distraction she had been longing for. But the more they spend time together, Mary starts to feel as if she has known him her entire life somehow. But an ancient dark force has been freed and if they want to save the world from its wrath, they’ll have to dig up the truth… even when it’s centuries old.

Overall, this was such a sweet and unique little read. The star-crossed lovers trope, reincarnation, and curse made for a fun twist on the classic love story, while the chemistry between the characters kept me invested from beginning to end. This was my first book by Masse, but after this charmingly spooky mummified love story, it definitely won’t be my last and I’m definitely looking forward to future releases from the author.

A spooky paranormal romance novella, and a fitting read for the Halloween season.

This was an entertaining adventure and a quick read. The romance felt a bit too insta-love/insta-lust for my personal tastes as a romance reader, although the aspects of fate and reincarnation at play in the plot explain this somewhat. Even though the main couple's story didn't fully capture my attention, I was driven to continue by the story's unique paranormal elements steeped in both Egyptian and Persian mythology.

However: I do think the magic system/lore of this story, while creative, suffered a bit from its highly condensed novella format, and that a longer book could have expanded on the driving paranormal forces of the plot in a more compelling way. I am not typically a reader that yearns for long passages of world-building or a 110% fleshed out magic system, but so much was going on in this story that I felt a bit confused to the point of disinterest by the end.

Thank you to the publisher and to BookSirens. I received a free copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

A Unique Mummy Romance with Mythological Depth

This paranormal romance is definitely something different! With a mummy at the heart of the story and references to Egyptian and Iranian mythology, it offers a rather unique setting, especially for a Halloween read.

However, I sometimes found it difficult to keep up with all the mythological references. If you're not already familiar with these traditions, the story can feel a little overwhelming, as it doesn't always provide enough background or explanations to help you understand everything. I was occasionally left wondering whether I had missed something.

On the other hand, the main characters are well described and developed, and their romance gives the story a solid foundation. Despite my difficulties with some of the mythological elements, I enjoyed the unusual concept and the different atmosphere.

Overall, this is an interesting and distinctive paranormal romance that makes for a good read if you're looking for something a little different around Halloween.

Okay, this was a cute, weird little snack of a book and I am here for it. I'm giving it 4 stars and 2.5 peppers. It's not a monster romance in the way I was expecting but I did really enjoy this story.

Mary works with mummies. She goes on an expedition and comes back feeling unsettled. She meets her new hot neighbor, Kevin, and things get a little weird. The following story is a quick and fun adventure.

I learned new things about Egyptian burial practices that I didn't know existed, so that was fun. The spice is there but not completely in your face. You get time to learn about the people involved, which I really enjoy in a novella. There's a time and place for pure smut. This isn't that.

All in all, I enjoyed this story. I spent time watching Mary and Kevin figure out their connection and do a little mystery solving. This is a good novella for someone looking for something quick and happy while still going deep enough to learn about the characters.

ARC REVIEW FROM THE AUTHOR!!

I was honestly shocked by how much this book covered in under 100 pages. You don’t expect it to be a full story but it is. It’s very fast but is a nice quick read. It’s a cute story about to souls finding each other again.

It does have some spice but it’s not too overwhelming or centered around it. I did get a little confused when the spirits were talking. It took a couple rereads for me to understand it.

Mary is an Egyptian archaeologist and professor in New York. She just came back from working a dig in Egypt. But she brought something bad back with her. She brought a curse to New York. Now she has to find a way to get rid of it.

Kayvon is Mary’s new next door neighbor. He has come to the city to deal with a curse. But he doesn’t know where it came from or who caused it. Just that he needs to rid the city of it while not falling for his neighbor.

Will Mary find out what’s wrong in New York? Will she ever recover from the dig site? Will Kayvon be able to help the city?

This was a very fun book! I really liked Mary as a character -- her clear passion for her work shined through, and it felt like it was a genuine reflection of care on the author's part as well, which I definitely appreciate.

Mary and Kayvon's romance is also very sweet, and feels like a natural build up in the narrative. There's obviously some paranormal aspects going on that I won't touch on, for fear of spoilers, but it was handled well, and didn't overwhelm the plot.

I do wish that the book was longer! I would've liked more time to sit in the supernatural side of it all, and really learn more about the fascinating world that's clearly sitting right under the surface of this narrative. But, as I always say, if my main complaint is that a book isn't long enough, that's a damn good book.

4/5 stars.

The mummy’s curse.

It was her first archeological dig: an Egyptian tomb. Marytamun “Mary” could not wait to get started. In her excitement, she made a big mistake. The mummy is on display now in a New York City museum. No one except Mary realizes she unleashed the mummy’s curse and it followed her back home. She can’t figure out how to “fix” the curse. Maybe she should move on with her life and get to know her hot new neighbor. Something about Kayvon feels familiar. They seem to have more in common than their love for New York pizza.

This is a cute mummy romance with some good steamy scenes. I liked the new twist on an old storyline. I received an advance copy, but my review is honest and voluntary.

A novella that begins with a mystery and slowly unravels in the aftermath of an excavation expedition to Egypt.

At the heart of the story is an inexplicable connection between two gifted people, drawn to each other by something neither of them can quite explain. Whether it’s an ancient curse, a shared past life, or simply fate bringing them together is left open to interpretation.

As they begin to unravel the mystery behind the failed excavation, they cross paths with two star-crossed lovers whose tragic story shed some light on the truth.

All in all a quick and happy read.

'Unmasking The Mummy' is a short, "meet-cute" novella which is easy to read and left me a little underwhelmed. I love monster romances, and if you are new to spice this story has a level which is manageable for all readers. If you are a fan of the classic movie The Mummy then you will see references and influence for the setting and plot of the book. I'd have preferred something more darker and gritty but it is well written, and stopped me from entering a reading slump.

As someone who enjoys stories set in Ancient Egypt, I had a lot of fun with this novella. The mix of archaeology, mythology, mystery, and romance worked well for me, and I especially liked the references to Egyptian history and beliefs. The connection between the main characters felt sweet and engaging, while the ancient curse added an entertaining supernatural element. Despite its short length, the story packs in plenty of action, romance, and intriguing ideas. A quick and enjoyable read for fans of paranormal romance with an Egyptian twist.

Recommended. Many thanks for this digital copy, all opinions are mine.

Star-crossed lovers separated for centuries reunite. Fate made right and a second chance???

What starts as modern day archeology and relics goes back to the past to right a wrong. One can't do it. It must be done as a pair. They must do it together, if they're to be reunited forever. Can they band together to exile the black funnel and its' contents?

This was short but an intriguing take on archeology, fate, and the supernatural. A fantastic pairing for paranormal lovers.

ARC review, copy provided by author

This was a cute short story, I enjoyed the Egyptology and Archeology themes.

The good: the main characters had good chemistry and the flow of the story was easy to follow and captivating.

The less good: I will say the cover of the book is a bit misleading, it makes it seem that the FMC’s love interest will be a shadow creature when in reality it’s another human.

Overall, I still enjoyed the story even though it’s not exactly what I thought it was going to be.

Sayla does such a great job of developing subplots in novellas! This one is fast paced enough to keep you engaged without rushing ahead too quickly ignoring the need for development. Sayla's ability to weave multiple plot threads together in the space of a novella truly impresses me

ALSO i love how this centers more around Iranian lor. I definitely don't see a lot of books/fantasy based on Iranian lore/customs/etc so that was refreshing.

Anyway! Fabulous fast-paced, well-woven romance novella! Highly recommend!

Everything I could possibly want as a Mummy and reincarnated lovers story!!!

This was an amazing story. It danced beautifully with reincarnated lovers. Their love felt real even when they first met and continued to grow. Reincarnation was just the fabulous piece needed for their love story. It even has great Egyptian and Persian history embedded. A great story for those who like the stories of mummies for more than what you can get in the movies.

The book wasnt what i was expecting but it was so much better. It put me in my feelings for their past selves and how everything turned out in the end. Mary was a wreck who couldn't slow down for the life of herself and then meeting kayvon(kevin) she was able to breath easier but also have so much doubt about herself. But he was able to sooth her and help her see things in a new light and to just accept herself and what's happening around them. I loved the book

Quick novella with plenty of Egyptian/Persian themed adventure.

I received an ARC from the author, all opinions expressed are my own 🖤

This wasn’t what I expected from the cover art and the blurb, the love interest is human but both fighting an incorporeal curse type creature. I enjoyed the information on Egyptian and Iranian folklore and burial rites. A quick, entertaining read with milks spice.

This is a cute short story centred around Halloween, with curses, love and magi.

Also filled with surprising facts about Ancient Egypt, which is a bonus for me as I love learning about Ancient Egypt, and a few of the fact that were discussed I had never known.

Key points in no particular order:
- archeologist
- magi
- teacher
- ancient Egypt
- ancient history
- Druj (evil spooky cloud that causes fighting, havoc, and feelings of anger)
- spicy 4/5
- fate intervening

Follow Mary an archeologist, who feels things are off since she got back from her latest dig in Egypt. Mary is consumed by her research trying to figure out why the stars are weird. She begins to see things and decides to take a step back. Incomes Kayvon her hot new neighbor. He seems to familiar and things become even more weird. I rue the fact that this book has been hidden from me for so long, and the author! Mary and Kayven's story was one that was more than just spice; it was adventure, Iranian/Egyptian history, and so much more. It took me a while to grow connected to Mary because I felt she was a little too self-centered, but her talk with Anthony redeemed her. I also loved Kayven, the golden retriever boyfriend who had me second guessing everything about him!

I knew from the title that this was going to be a bit of a stretch but I felt like reading a little short story during spooky time but this fell flat.

The FMC was super annoying, the story didn’t made sense, and than you add a layer of magic that didn’t make sense to me. Even that short I didn’t care to finish it sorry. 😞
