The book was tagged as “Industrial horror”. Ok, I can’t say I was horrified but I loved the premise of the book and the story told here.
The story takes place in Pennsylvania and having grown up in Johnstown a classic steel town built around rough industries like coal mining and steel making.
The main character, “Big Bess” was described and showcased very well and the huge role “she” played in many small steel towns across the state. The importance of the employer who held the town and its people in its grips depending on the economy and the whims of the company. Families were stuck in the cycle.
The only negative and reason for 4/5 was the voice used by the author. Written as tho told by in those in the community so the sentence structure felt odd to me and at times hard to follow but after a bit I caught on and it was fine.
Here in Pittsburgh, we have the Carrie Furnace; the historic blast furnace that can be visited in its raw state. The size and presence of Carrie is unbelievably impressive and having visited her several years ago I was able to visualize some of the processes and danger that was highlighted throughout the book.
