1) Turtle, Turtle, Watch Out by April Pulley Sayre. Copyright 2010.
2) The book Turtle, Turtle describes how turtles lives are endangered each day. The book does so by telling the story of a single turtle who encounters the dangers these animals face. The turtle is constantly saved by helpful humans throughout the book. I will read this book first to introduce the concept of endangerment to my students. We will talk about what endangerement is, why it's important to know about, other animals that are endangered, and ways we can help these animals. Then we will read the book Endangered Closeup in order to learn about more animals that are endangered. It will give us more information about what animals are endangered and what puts them in danger.
3) This story is presented in a cause and effect structure. The effect is that the animals become endangered, we read about the cause of that endangerement for each animal. If this book suggested ways to help save the animals, it would be problem solution, but it does not.
4) For this I would have my students use a story web to organize the information they receive. The middle of the web would be "Endangered Species" while the branches would include animals, causes/dangers, and possible solutions. As we read both books, we will be able to add to each branch to help students synthesize the information they read and see where they have holes in their knowledge. It will be something we can continue to add on to.

A little outdated, but I like how they highlighted what animals are close to extinction and then included some insects as well. It mentioned that bees are becoming endangered and I think it is important for children to know what it going on in our world and start thinking about how we can change the way we live to better the planet we live on.
