This book is available The Land of Magic (Sorcery & Science Collection 1)
Born in the land of magic, Ariella has never cared for the nightmare world of technology beyond Elitia’s airships, bombs, some dubious thing the humans call fusion energy. Her last encounter with technology very nearly killed her, and she’s not eager for a rematch. But then her friend Davin, the crown prince of Elitia, is abducted by agents of the Avan Empire. To save the man she secretly loves, she has to travel beyond Elitia to the Avan capital city. Her only hope lies with rogue mercenary Everett—and trying to fight technology with magic.
Everett, mercenary and rescue mission expert extraordinaire, knows he’s in for trouble as soon as he sees his latest client. Ariella is Elition; the enormous glowing sword she carries around won’t let him forget that, just as he can’t forget the last time he crossed paths with Elition magic. Ten of his friends died, victims of telekinetic sorcery, and Everett learned to be very wary of magic. But Ariella is offering him a substantial reward for his help—if they can save Davin before the Avans’ unknown endgame plays out.
Enchanted is the first book in the Sorcery and Science fantasy adventure series.
Ella Summers has been writing stories for as long as she could read; she's been coming up with tall tales even longer than that. One of her early year masterpieces was a story about a pigtailed princess and her dragon sidekick. Nowadays, she still writes fantasy. She likes books with layered plots, lots of action and adventure, and a touch of romance. When she is not busy writing or spending time with her two young children, she makes the world safe by fighting robots.
Originally from the U.S., Ella currently resides in Switzerland. She is the author of Sorcery and Science, a fantasy adventure series set in a world splintered by magic and technology.
Well parts of enchanted were good, but it read like a 1930's Superman comic book. Being outnumbered 5 to 1 or 10 to 1, walk in the park, holy speeding locomotive!
This is a book purchased as part of the Dominion Rising Anthology. Listed in the anthology as Sorcery & Science, the blurb is the same as shown in Enchanted, so I assume they are the same story. Excellent story line, and the author handled the change between worlds really well-- this could have easily turned into a hot-mess, but the portal-hopping was clear. The characters were great, and I didn't see the twist at the end.
Fast-paced fantasy adventure with great characters in an interesting world
Summary: 5 stars. Recommended for people who like fast-paced fantasy adventures with complex characters and great world-building.
Enchanted is a fast-paced, fun adventure in an interesting fantasy world. The story starts with a bang and never stops moving until the end.
There is well thought out world-building and a cool blend of genres. The mix of magic and technology reminds me of steampunk but with more advanced technology, and Elitions which are a kind of superhuman with some magic abilities. A nice touch is that those abilities come with consequences, like prophets can go mad when they kill someone.
The book is well-written. Descriptions are vivid but not heavy or boring. Through all the action it is the characters who keep the book real. They are complex, and there's great chemistry between the Elition Ariella and the human mercenary Everett. It's nice to read about a strong, butt-kicking young female character who is also sometimes unsure or vulnerable. I'd really like to read more about Ariella and Davin's story and hope their relationship (romance?) is explored in later books.
Great writing, realistic characters, and turbo-charged action make this book a very fast and fun read easily devoured in a single sitting.
"Enchanted" is a fast, engaging read. It is a fast-paced fantasy adventure with guns and magic, interesting characters, solid action scenes, plot twists that make you want to find out what happens next, and a solid finale - with a great opening for the next book. It's hard to put the book down, and you can finish it in one sitting.
The concept of the series is very interesting; a world where different civilizations use either magic or technology (and there's a force field that prevents the technology from working in the magic side). So the characters from different races / factions have different strengths and weaknesses, and some of the magic users are adverse to technology and vice versa.
A few more things I enjoyed about the book: - very immersive worldbuilding; - proactive and sympathetic characters that have interesting strengths and weaknesses, and are very well described. Excellent attention to detail. Even the secondary / episodic characters come to life extremely well. - good chemistry and interaction between the lead characters; - catchy prose, snappy dialogue.
A complimentary copy was given by the author in exchange for my honest review.
Well, what can I say about this story and the author? Hmmm...this would make it my third book from the author I've read, and the woman is flawless!! Each of her stories are magically unique. You're always left wanting more. And this story is no different. This book was an 'iffy' for me at first because of the cover, but you know what they say, "Never judge a book by it's cover." How true that is!! To make this short, the story was excellent, and it flowed without a hitch. It's magically original.
I'm very surprised at the five star reviews because this story is clearly in need of a re-write. I'm almost halfway through the story (46%) and it desperately needs more exposition. Not a lot of things are explained and the reader is jumping from one scene or chapter into another. Longer chapters and smoother scene transitions would be nice.
Finally, the blurb and ages of the characters imply this is a YA story. However, I found the writing to be more suited towards children aged 10-13 years old.
In the beginning I was feeling out of sorts. There wasn't an introduction to this strange world. I didn't understand the terminology, but I caught in quick. The story started to pick up and I was really starting to look forward to the next page... Then the book ended. I will definitely be reading on.
This is a fantastic, light-hearted fantasy where you just know that nothing can truly go wrong. It has a similar feel to watching the TV show Merlin... Yes, people do technically die but overall it just has a very light-hearted quality to it. I don't know how else to describe it.
I liked the two main characters and their complementary fears: magic and technology. It's a quick, fun read.
Another good book that lost a star for the silly forced romance. I hate these romances that the publisher probably forces on authors. The lead had the chance to be a really good character, instead she come off as a crushing schoolgirl - pitiful.
Wasn't really sure which point of view this whole book was from. The story also didn't feel like it gave closure. I thought the story could have been written much better with better pacing.
I like magic, fairies, sorcerers and witches but I'm not one to go for all the fighting and conquering. I'm not planning on reading the remainder of the series.
