Take the Fall #3

After We Fall

Rate this book
After winning raves for Take the Fall (“crackling with tension, intrigue, and romance”—Katy Evans) and When We Fall (“sexy, emotional, heartfelt”—Monica Murphy), Marquita Valentine ratchets up the tension as new beginnings lead to undeniable passion.

A tough cop with an even tougher past, Hunter Sloan has never let anyone stop him from getting what he wants—and he wants Evangeline Ambrose bad. With her gentle curves and raw vulnerability, Hunter’s beautiful, mysterious new neighbor awakens his protective side. Determined to do right by a woman who’s gone through hell and back, Hunter could be the one to take away the pain—so long as his own secrets don’t sink their relationship before it begins.

Having escaped an abusive marriage, Evangeline simply wants to start over in the small, quiet town of Forrestville. She’s also avoiding all contact with the opposite sex, because she just can’t trust her instincts when it comes to men—not even with the sinfully sexy cop next door. So why can’t she stop thinking about him? Hunter has darkness in his soul, and yet no one ever made her feel so safe. For all her best laid plans, Evangeline didn’t count on choices this hard—or temptation this hot.

Totally enjoyed Hunter and Evangeline's story! Hunter met the heroine after a particularly bad beating from her husband. For months, he couldn't stop thinking about her. Then, he gets a new neighbor who is none other than the woman he couldn't forget. She pretends not to remember and in the process finds a little of her once sassy self. Their exchanges are very meaningful and work towards her rebuilding herself. Hunter is patient and sweet with her. After their initial meeting he avoided OW and after reconnecting he was even more adamant that he would not put himself in a position for Evangeline to misunderstand anything between him and any other woman because he was only interested in her. They weren't even together at the time. It was seriously all kinds of awesome :) The story touches on domestic abuse and the long lasting effects. It was done in a tasteful manner. The characters are complex and interesting. The plot was paced very well. There is plenty of sexy to be had but also much more depth. Safety: No OW/OM/Sharing, though there is a woman interested in our H and the h is legally married but separated from her extremely abusive husband. They were not Vs. They used condoms until they consciously decided not to. There is extreme physical abuse to both H and h. H when he was younger by his father. h more recently by her husband. There is no rape. There's some pushing away but I didn't find it overdone.

I really enjoyed this book! Hunter was so sweet and attentive to Evangeline. She recently got out of an abusive marriage and Hunter was the cop that rescued her on the side of the road. For the last 6 months, Hunter has been unable to stop thinking about Evangeline . When they end up neighbors, sparks fly between them but Evangeline is afraid after everything she went through. I loved how understanding Hunter could be with Evangeline but also how he knew what she needed. This book was steamy and surprisingly low-angst. I am really looking forward to the next book in this series!

5 learning to trust yourself stars!

WOW! What a powerful story!

Ms. Valentine beautifully wrote a story about a woman who was in an abusive relationship with her husband for six years and survived.
Evangeline's healing journey included learning to first trust herself, and then open herself to others.
Hunter is the police officer who found her six months ago after a beating by her husband that almost killed her, and he knows first-hand what it's like to be at the hands of an abuser.
He can't get her out of his mind. He wants her. She's stirred something in him he thought he would never have, and he'll do whatever it takes to show her she can trust him with her heart and her body.
I loved that the author wrote this story in a dual POV. It was amazing 'seeing' each character through their eyes.
I loved their journey to one another, and finally, them both learning to open their hearts to one another.

My favorite quote in the book is at the end of the Epilogue where the author says, "To those who make it out, I wish you joy and happiness....and peace."

Thank you, Ms. Valentine, for this wonderfully written story of survival, hope, love, and peace.

Take The Fall series
Take the Fall (Book 1)
When We Fall (Book 2) REVIEW HERE
After We Fall (Book 3)

After We Fall is the third book in Marquita Valentine's Take the Fall series. I have read the previous book (When We Fall), but it wasn't necessary in order to read this one. And while I LOVED When We Fall, this book just felt a little rushed and forced in a way.

It has been six months since Evangeline Ambrose was found walking along the side of the road after finally finding the strength to leave her abusive husband. Now she is ready to start over in a new town where no one knows her or her past. Or so she thought, until she discovers her new neighbor is the cop that helped her the night she left her husband.

Hunter Sloan hasn't been able to get the scared, beaten Evangeline out of his head in the six months since he found her walking along the side of road. And when he discovers that she is his new neighbor, Hunter becomes determined to show her that not all men are like her abusive ex-husband. But Hunter has a secret, that if it becomes known, could ruin any chance with Evangeline before it even begins.

I thought for surviving such an abusive marriage for many years, Evangeline moved fast with Hunter. The relationship felt rushed to me. She still didn't fully trust men OR herself yet, but wanted Hunter and fell for him pretty fast. That aspect of Evangeline just didn't vibe for me with this story. Or... i just wish there was more TIME involved with their relationship. But don't get me wrong, Hunter IN NO WAY forced her into anything. He just stated his intentions and desires. I just wish that Evangeline had taken more time for herself to fully learn to trust and forgive herself.

While this book wasn't my favorite, I still would recommend When We Fall and definitely plan on reading Take The Fall (whenever I get the time).

Evangeline (Eva) escaped an abusive marriage and has started over. Leaving everything behind, she now has a job at an animal shelter and is moving into a new apartment. She's come a long way but still has trust issues and doesn't let people get close to her.

Hunter has not forgot the woman he found on the side of the road, beaten and afraid. He did what he could and took her to a women's shelter. As a cop it's his job to protect those in need and move on to the next call, but even after six months he can't shake his reaction to the woman he helped.

When Eva moves into the apartment across the hall from Hunter, he's thrilled to see the woman he hasn't been able to stop thinking about; however, Eva is mortified to be face to face with the cop who saw her at her lowest point. As Hunter tries to befriend Eva and gain her trust, Eva slowly comes out of her shell and is willing to let Hunter into her life.

Told from dual points of view, I enjoyed getting to see both Eva and Hunter's thoughts and motivations. While I wish there had been more depth to their characters and more build-up to their relationship, it was still enjoyable to watch as it progressed.

Overall, After We Fall was an engaging contemporary romance and I look forward to continuing the series.

Note: After We Fall is the third book in Take the Fall series but can be read as a standalone.

Marquita Valentine's Take the Fall series keeps going from strength to strength. After the Fall focuses on Hunter and Evangeline, a couple who we met in book two, under circumstances you would never wish upon anyone.

"I hate the way I’m scared of opening up to people, of letting them in and attempting to have a life."

This couple each have tragic pasts and their journey is one paced perfectly based on their situation: Evangeline has escaped an abusive marriage and Hunter was the officer who helped her do so. She understandably has a distrust in men and is focussed on rebuilding her life, but Hunter's patience is heartwarming and whilst he wears his heart on his sleeve, anything that may happen between them is on Evangeline's terms. And this is precisely why I loved them together..

description

This is a touching story of friendship, discovery, understanding and blossoming love and despite being a shorter read it held plenty of passion and didn't feel rushed or incomplete in any way. And with great secondary characters in Saylor and Hayden, I'm looking forward to seeing what Hard to Fall holds in store.

Can we actually meet someone as sweet as Hunter? I mean where are the Hunters in our lives????
To read this a few months reading the 4th book which is Hayden’s story and not exactly loving it, I came to this book not knowing what to expect. I imagined a normal NA book I’ve read and a cheesy ok-ish plot but what I was given was one of the sweetest romances ever.

This is gonna go without doubt into my favorite books list of this year and my favorite NA novels. The story wasn’t what you call super unique but the writing and characterization makes it unique. You can’t help but fall in love with the silently strong Eva and protective man Hunter. Ms Valentine had exceeded herself with writing such a sweet story and although it took me a while to read the book due to few of my obligations and regrettably, work it took me around two days to actually finish the book but believe me if I was at home I would have finished this book in record speed.

I really enjoyed After We Fall.

I fell in love with both Hunter and Evangeline, they were likable, complex and relatable characters.
My heart went out to Evangeline, after coming out of an abusive relationship she was left with trust and insecurities issues.
Hunter knew he had to be patient if he was ever going to win her love and trust. He was a total sweetheart and the perfect man for Evangeline.

Hunter Sloan can more than help the people he works with as a cop, he can sympathize. With his childhood in an abusive family behind him, he's centered his life around helping others. There's just one girl he can't forget, even with her broken spirit and painful bruises, she stood out to him. When new-to-town Evangeline moves in across the street he can't believe it's the same woman and he'd do anything to have her.
Evangeline wants nothing to do with relationships, especially after leaving her abusive ex behind, but she can't get the cop across the hall out of her mind. As she learns to live on her own again and find the strength inside her she finds that companionship in Hunter isn't as bad as she once thought. She's always wary though, about the darkness that could be inside, and the choices she must make are harder than she imagined they would be.

“There’s a fire in her eyes that I would love to get burned by.”

I pretty much swooned my way through this entire book. Marquita Valentine writes characters that you'll immediately sympathize with and a story line that's both heartbreaking and heartwarming at the same time. The Take the Fall series is known for having beautiful HEA's, but the process to get there in After We Fall is full of angst. I've never read a book and had so much hope for the characters, because I felt so much for them. Hunter is such a gentleman, his past forming him into a better person, and he's ever the optimist. Evangeline is beautiful, but broken, terrified of her ex, afraid to move on, and trapped in a cycle of pessimism. Together, though, these two even one another out and their chemistry is enough for both to put their pasts behind them in exchange for new beginnings. I loved both characters and how realistic they were as they dealt with their problems. Their chemistry is scorching hot and I love how they started out and what it morphed into. Plus, they happen to have the best friends ever and every interaction in this book was entertaining. I found myself laughing often, holding back tears repeatedly, and becoming an eternal optimist for both of the main characters to overcome their issues to be together.

“He’s not an impatient kisser, not at all. Hunter has a mouth made for sinning and the skills to make me want to skip dinner and go straight to dessert.”

While After We Fall is book 3 in the Take the Fall series it read a lot more like a standalone than I expected. There is more emphasis on the main characters and the single secondary characters than there are on the characters from the previous two novels. I loved the interactions the main characters had with the secondary characters, though at times they didn't feel conducive to moving the book along. While Evangeline and Hunter do have some serious chemistry, I wasn't expecting the instalove vibe I got. I felt like the abusive relationship Evangeline dealt with was almost forgotten for her personally about halfway through, unless she was being directly impacted by it. That said, I think everything the characters went through really lead to some great character development and story development, so my complaints didn't affect the overall read for me.

"I know what’s in your heart."

I was super impressed with After We Fall, I think Marquita Valentine handled the heavy topic of abuse very well and I loved the growth both characters go through. All of the characters had such personality and I will definitely be sticking around for Saylor's story, I love that nerdy girl!

A charmingly sweet and sexy story about survival and love.
"These are the sounds of my heart, the sounds of my future and the sounds of my home."

Hunter Sloan didn’t have to wait to join the police force to know what physical and mental abuse looks like. He was subjected to it as a boy and has been witness to it countless times since becoming a cop. But when he saw the telltale signs on Evangeline, not only did his protective instincts awaken, so did his desire for her. He knows how much she’s suffered and that he’ll need to be careful and patient, however there’s nothing he won’t do to have her.
“There’s a fire in her eyes that I would love to get burned by.”

After too many years of torment at the hands of her almost ex-husband, Evangeline Ambrose is finally free and trying to find herself again. She’s moved to a small town, found a great job in an animal shelter, made a cool girlfriend and is avoiding her ridiculously attractive neighbor who also happens to be the officer that helped get to the women’s shelter at her most dire moment. She doesn’t trust herself when it comes to men any more. Except Hunter’s care and thoughtfulness makes her feel undeniably safe. Can she overcome her fears and learn to trust again in order to give them a shot?
“You are a woman who need protecting. A woman who needs a man to stand up for her instead of stepping on her… I’m the man for the job. I’m the man for the long haul.”

Marquita Valentine writes wonderful characters all around. Hunter, Sloan and all the secondary characters including Jake the dog are likeable and the hero and heroine suit each other perfectly. Marquita also tackles a sensitive but real subject matter making the reader feel and understand the characters without having the drama overshadow the hopeful romance which is pleasantly angst free.

Hunter is absolutely swoon worthy with his combination of nurturing protectiveness and delicious alpha maleness. It was moving to see that he got past the horrors of his own past to become a good man who would take his time for the woman he wants in his life.

Even having suffered terrible physical and mental mistreatment for years, Evangeline is strong in her resolve to take her life back into her hands. Even while struggling with self-doubt, I liked that she hadn’t lost her core goodness, hope or the desire to grow. I wanted her to succeed, however I found it unrealistic that she would overcome the hell she’s gone through without counseling and then I felt that there were things about her past, from before her marriage that got glossed over.

Despite Hunter’s insta-love feelings towards Evangeline their bond progressed slowly but surely building trust based on mutual respect and the knowledge that they’ve both suffered from domestic violence. They’re perfect for one another, the romance was cute, sweet and sexy but somehow I couldn’t fully connect with them, something just didn’t ring true particularly the too quick, a bit too much hearts and flowers ending.

I did feel an instant connection with Sawyer, Hunter and Evangeline’s neighbor. She’s quirky with a love for Star Wars and I can’t wait to read her story together with the intriguing Hayden.

After We Fall is the third book in the Take the Fall series by Marquita Valentine. It is a standalone, full-length, well written contemporary romance with sweet, tender moments, deliciously sexy times and a dash of drama. Told from both points of view, with a happy ending.

Autry's review posted at Guilty Pleasures Book Reviews

After We Fall is a must read! It is crammed full of heartbreaking emotions that blossom into a beautiful love story. Evangeline and Hunter are a couple that will forever hold a place in my heart; they have both overcome some very ugly history and learn to trust again, starting with each other. I felt such heartbreak for Evangeline, I was hoping she would find some strength inside herself to take a small risk, let Hunter prove to her, he’s a man worth loving. Hunter could have a list a mile long of attributes; tall, muscular, handsome, protective and trustworthy. Giving her heart to another man could be disastrous, together they slowly learn to trust and give Evangeline her life, family and friends back. They had an undeniable pull, it was clear once they decided to take the Fall, it would be a passion filled romance. After We Fall is an emotion-invoking novel, crammed with tension, passion, hope, love, and honesty. Hunter and Evangeline’s story is the best addition to the Take the Fall series. I feel as if I fall more in love with Ms. Valentine’s work with every book she writes, the plot flows seamlessly, some things discussed in the novel are very sensitive, but it is done with class and written with care. All of the characters are complex and relatable; they could honestly be your next-door neighbors. If you liked Take We Fall and When We Fall you will adore After the Fall.

After the Fall is one of the many books I've read by Marquita Valentine. It can be read as a standalone, it does have an HEA and no cliffhanger. It is also the third book of the Take the Fall series but doesn't need to be read in any order.

Time and time again I come back to this author's books. They are fantastic, for lack of a better word. After the Fall, in particular, hits some topics that don't usually come up in romance novels. For that reason alone, I loved the plot. It is moving, engaging, well paced and it absolutely draws you in. For me, I ended up feeling invested. I had to know how it ended for these characters.

As for the before mentioned characters, they were great. Complex, but not so complex that you had nothing but inner monologue. I fell for Hunter, I'll be the first to admit that. He's great book boyfriend material! Evangeline, our heroine, is one of those characters I just instantly admired. She hasn't had an easy life, and she's trying to put herself back together. Her struggles are parts of what you read. And the fact that she tries to avoid the very obvious chemistry between herself and Hunter.

I would leave a warning that if domestic violence makes you twitch, this may be a hard one for you to read. Outside of that, the synopsis covers the contents extremely well!

This is one I would wholeheartedly recommend. I loved it! Full 5 stars!

My Review:

After We Fall felt like a departure from her norm compared to the previous Marquita Valentine books I have read – granted I have only read a handful, but this one was considerably more angsty with a pervasive sense of heaviness and emotional tension, despite also being a sweet and tender love story. Due to their histories of trauma and abuse, both major characters experienced flashbacks - with scenes that could possibly trigger other such victims - although I felt the subject was handled deftly and in a sensitive manner. The storyline was relevant, steamy, realistic, highly emotive, and well paced. I adored these characters and quickly fell in love with Hunter – who is now my current BBF.

Evangeline has a tough marriage and now she wants to take a step by step yet there is a hot cop next door who maybe wants to shake her life a little bit. Hunter had an abusive father and understand and give space o Eva even when he can't because he is already falling in love with her.

I like the h/H they are a good couple. Evangeline likes every female wants Hunter really bad yet she wants to goes slowly because her marriage/ex-husband was an abuser. The book is short still the relationship between is build up really good. What botters me was that they have to talk about what happened in their past and they could not move on from this or the author was trying to show us how connect they are?!!

Hunter rescue her and was angry because she was digging in his past and yet he did the same with her. That part not felt good they probably have a lot issues to deal with it. The feelings were too quickly besides their tough past I did not see what they have more in common or why they married so fast yet...romance.

Its an ok reading.

Marquita Valentine continues to deliver a story with charm, love, hope, strength, and new beginnings. And in her newest release, After We Fall, Marquita beautifully weaves and layers this story with raw emotions as she brings forth a tale of a young woman getting her second chance at life and love.

photo 78bbaf998fce302aa7729a801706fb_zpszbu64gvx.gif “I can’t protest because it’s true . I do want him. I do trust him to take care of me, too. It’s almost like it’s a natural thing with us, something I’ve never experienced before .”

Shattered and broken were two words to describe Evangeline Ambrose when her husband left her abused and battered that is until Evangeline found the courage to start a new life. With a fresh new start, Evangeline is hoping to rebuild the life that was stolen from her. Moving to a new apartment, she hoped her new freedom will allow her to discover the beauty and light that was ripped from her. She wasn’t looking for love but fate had a different plan for her.

#AfterWeFall

Hunter Sloan is a cop, who rescued a young woman from an abusive relationship and has never seemed to forget about her that is until he reunites with her when he discovers that she is his new neighbor. Evangeline Ambrose is the one woman who he couldn’t shake out of his mind and with her living in such close proximity, Hunter couldn’t help but be drawn to her even more. And in such, Hunter makes it known to Evangeline that he will protect her and show her the kind of love that she truly deserves. With his help and encouragement, Evangeline found hope, love, light, strength, and most importantly a new beginning at life. But as Hunter and Evangeline passion ignites, how will Evangeline react when her past comes crashing back into her life?

After We Fall is beautiful emotional tale that will touch your heart. This book is a short read but Marquita Valentine has manage to pack this book with so much passion, heart, and beauty. So if you are looking for a story that captures the sentiment of second chances, hope, and healing then this book is for you.

Normally I love Valentine's storylines but this story just fell flat for me. It starts off pretty interesting when Evangeline is escaping her abusive husband and is trying to move on with her life. She doesn't want to fall for another man that is until she sees the man who helped her when she was at her worst. It just so happens that he is her new neighbor. But the more Evangeline tries to stay away from Hunter the harder she starts to fall.

Being a police officer comes with seeing the good, bad and the ugly but one thing Hunter hasn't been able to forget since 6 months ago was the abused Evangeline. Hunter is shocked that she is moving in his building and is wondering if he can finally earn her trust and help her move on with her life which includes him.

I really liked Hunter. He became a better man then his father was. He was also sweet, protective and took it slow with Evangeline because she needed it. Hunter definitely showed her that she should be treasured. But there were times when I was reading that I felt Evangeline moved a little too fast with wanting to move on with Hunter. It almost felt like Valentine was leaving out a few things. Like one minute she is scared but she isn't so scared to go toe to toe with her ex? I'm not sure after being a victim of abuse if you ever really get over it but it seemed like Evangeline was rushing the timeline a bit.

Each of the characters were likable and the storyline had its ups and downs but this wasn't one of my favorite books in this series. Am I giving up on this series? Nope,
Not just yet because I'm sure Valentine has some more amazing characters up her sleeve.

While I didn't totally fall in love with this book it doesn't mean I wouldn't recommend this series. It has wonderfully written heroes and HEA that keep you swooning.

Sweet and sexy, hot, swoony and a little emotional—that about sums up my experience with After We Fall. Which, in case it isn’t obvious, I really, really enjoyed.

This is the first book in Marquita Valentine’s Take the Fall series I have read (although I am the proud owner of the first two and will be dipping into them before too long), and I was sucked into Hunter and Evangeline’s story from the get-go. A total standalone, I never once felt like I was missing something, and easily connected with the fine cop and his bruised-but-not-broken new neighbor.

After We Fall may have moved a touch too quickly for my liking—the pacing was somewhat rushed in places, although not to the detriment of the story—but it was apparent from the first page that Hunter was going to be one hell of a book boyfriend. He had all the right moves and words to make this reviewer melt and cheer for him as he tried to win over the (rightfully) skittish woman across the hall.

Evangeline was book best friend material, too. You know, that female character you’d want to hang out with in real life?! That was Eva—she was stronger than she gave herself credit for, braver than even she knew, and also, loved animals. And can I just say that the rescue animal aspect of this book made me all kinds of happy? It did—I love seeing good deeds done, even in fiction.

All in all, this was a surprisingly fun (given the abuse in these character’s pasts) and very sexy outing in the Take the Fall series, and one that’s piqued my interest for not just the first two books, but also for the Holland Springs series. If I’m going to get sweet and sexy, hot, swoony and a little emotional again, then I can’t wait to start! ~ Beth, 4 stars

After we fall it's the third story of the series Take the fall and can be read as a standalone but you should definitely read the previous because are great stories.
In this installment we have Evangeline's and Hunter's story, Evangeline has suffered by the hand of an abusive husband and after years she decides to end things with him and stay far away from men. Hunter is a cop who also has a dark past filled with pain and wants Evangeline at any cost. Will Evangeline be able to trust men again and give Hunter a chance and what about when she'll learn about his past???

I had very high hopes about this book because i loved the previous story and when i read about this story's topic seemed very appealed to me, don't get me wrong it is a beautiful story and the author did great job with it's sensitive subject about abuse but unfortunately it wasn't my favorite. In addition i would like to say that you can easily love both characters it was one thing that i liked in this book and the play between them was enjoyable but i was expecting more of this story. Cop, Hunter Sloan, has not been able to get the abused woman he rescued out of his head. It has been six months and he still feels like she was meant to be something in his life, when he finds her moving in next door in his apartment building he can finally breathe again.

Evangeline Ambrose remembers Hunter, even if she doesn't want to look back to that day where her rescued her and she actually began to have a life again. Hunter takes baby steps with Evangeline, hoping to gain her trust. He knows she is his one, but can she move past her fears to move forward with Hunter?

Enjoyable read. I liked seeing Evangeline coming out of her shell. Hunter is a rock, he is intense and while he makes no bones about his desire for Evangeline, he lets her set the pace. Had a couple of side characters I am curious to see if they get a story of their own. Great read, perfect for a spring day sitting outside and relaxing.

Great romance. We met Hunter and Evangeline in the previous book. He's a cop and she's a domestic abuse victim that he helps get to Piper's half-way home. You might also recognize her from the Holland Springs series. Hunter was perfect for her, and she is amazing in starting over but not being dragged down by previous baggage.

Here's hoping the next book is his buddy, Hayden, with her friend, Saylor.

Evangeline has been a victim of sever spousal abuse. The night that her husband almost kills her, she ends up escaping and being rescued by a cop named Hunter. Hunter takes Evangelina to a shelter where she can heal. Hunter can't get her out of his mind though. There is just something about her.

When we meet Evangelina in the present, she is mostly healed physically, but mentally there is still a lot of work to do. Evangelina is mad at herself for even letting it get so bad with her ex. Now she is always living in fear and watching her back to make sure he is not going to come back and do something else to her.

Hunter is a very well written hero in this story and I quickly fell in love with him. Hunter has a past that haunts him as well. Evangelina and him have more in common than they realize but she is quick to guard herself from any other guys. I can totally understand how Evangelina feels and why she has the reservations about me that she does after what all she has been through.

Hunter is able to be more patient with Evangelina because of his past. He understands things that others don't because they have both been through some crazy situations. Hunter has a way to get his frustrations out and he keeps it from Evangelina for most of the story, which looking back was probably not too smart on his part.

I thought that this was a very well written story and one that deals with some serious issues. Marquita Valentine has a way with making things seem ok even if it is a sever situation you are going through.

3.5 Stars

I am not sure if I am rounding up or down yet...

Ok, so I have to admit. I am reading this out of order. But, in my defence it works as standalone. So I think I got away with it.

I love Valentine's writing style and After We Fall was just written the way I like my cute & fluffies.
Cute, intense and captivating.
I did expect this to be way more fluffy than it actually is. In fact, Valentine tackled the heavy subject of domestic abuse. But while she managed to add the depth and seriousness of it, it isn't really what After We Fall is about. In the end it's a romance.

Which brings me to the story line. And the reason why this is 3.5 rather than 4 Stars for me. If you would have asked me about a third in, I could have told you basically where this was going. And sadly I wasn't surprised at all. I mean not a single surprise. Which is rather disappointing. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed After We Fall. Just somehow wish it wouldn't have been that predictable.
Then there is the whole insta thing. I found it way too much, especially when it came to Hunter.
The good thing with that though, somehow Valentine took a step back and made this a fairly slow romance, which I enjoyed.

While Valentine wasn't wowing me with the story line. She did an impressive job with the character building. I liked Hunter right from the get go. He is just awesome sauce. Let's just put it out there.
Hotilicous and definitely a fab book-boyfriend. Right up there, except that towards the end of the book.. it kinda felt a bit too good to be true. The epilogue especially. Though I got to admit, that I am rather tough customer, I am guessing that many readers will disagree with me.
Evangeline was interesting. I found it hard to connect with her in the beginning, but as time got by, I grew to love her. Valentine did an amazing job IMO. While Evangeline is battling with moving on, her past while haunting her is brilliantly explained. It's probably my favorite part of the book. Valentine delicately balances the bad memories, the doubts, the reclaiming, the hope and the growth of Evangeline. It all is done with a subtle touch so that it never overshadows the cute & fluffy elements while the cute never takes away from the seriousness of the situation. Absolutely love it!
I said that the insta part put me a bit off. But I should mention as their connection and relationship grew, I totally got it. I think their slow romance made this enjoyable. The fact that they have their own struggles, the fact that they both take time to build their trust and the fact that both of them get what the other went through.. all of it makes a solid connection, it's tangible and it feel like they are made for each other.
Yep, I just said that. Shocking I know- remember I am miss commitment-issues. But by the end, Hunter and Evangeline just felt like they were meant to be. Cuddos to Valentine for making me think... and even say this out aloud!
The support cast is interesting, unique and I liked them so much I shall be reading the rest of the series soon! Oh and I can't wait for the next I do hope it's about Hayden...
Last but not least I feel like I should mention that there is dramas and brokenness- but somehow the broken feel wholesome and there is not much angst. It's really refreshing. I felt hopeful and happy at the end of it. Not really happy fuzzy like with cute & fluffy swooney books but really content, pleased and hopeful.
I like the way this made me feel.
I read cute & fluffies for the entertainment value but also for the happy feeling at the end. And this felt more profound, it was a deeper kind of a feeling.

Which brings me back to the rating: While I wasn't impressed with the first 3rd, I thoroughly enjoyed the second third and the last third was good. 3.5 Stars. BUT : To round up or to round down? I am going to let it sink it and see how I feel in a few days (4/1/16)
I ended up rounding it down.

A well written romance, that tackles a heavy subject with subtle understanding and brings you a sweet romance full of hope.

Ralou’s Review: 4 “Angel” stars

This book is definitely all about the emotions. Not only the ones the characters are going through, but also the ones it evokes in the reader.

“These are the sounds of my heart, the sounds of my future, and the sounds of my home.”

Once again, my attention focused on the female character, Evangeline. I was watching closely every one of her thoughts, reactions and feelings because when you have a woman that has gone through severe domestic violence, your brain stays on that. At least, mine did. Although, Hunter’s role in everything above, undoubtedly doesn’t go unnoticed. And how could I, really, when his personality and the way he’s treating her had me mushy inside?

Hunter shares an incredibly strong, deep and intimate connection with Evangeline. You see, he’s one of the cops who had found her after her husband had beaten her almost to death and he’s the one who helped her recover. Although, after Eva got back to her life and got to stand up for herself and the decisions she made during her recovery, she never came out of Hunter’s mind and heart. Hunter since the moment he met Eva, he lost every interest for any other woman. She had become his obsession – with the good way – and his angel. Until he saw her again while she was moving in the apartment across fro him. Tell about core-rocking shock! This is the moment that sets their love in motion and ready to run its final lap.

Their every interaction is overflowing with unspoken and unrevealed feelings which pulls the thread of attraction between them even tighter. Evangeline, though she wants nothing to do with men for her very far future, she can’t deny the strong pull between her and Hunter and how her heart and whole body reacts when she is near him. But she is not alone in that. Hunter is trying to deal with the same and more, since he knows that he has to treat Eva with more delicacy, care, gentleness than usual because, otherwise, he may loses her and that is a scenario he can’t stand to consider. The difference though is that whatever he does, comes directly from his heart and his delicate behavior has its roots, not on the fact that Evangeline is a domestic violence victim, but because she means the world to him. And this is what makes their story amazing and so wonderful.

There’s a fire in her eyes that I would love to get burned by.

Although, what bothered me about this book was the fact it was progressing fast and the unfolding seemed a bit rushed. Which had as a result for me to not enjoy it as much as I would like. Marquita once again let her fantastic writing to take over the story and captivate me in its sweet world, but her rushness kind of put a break on it. But, I would definitely read it again if the chance would arose. It’s an amazing love about a couple that denies to give up on each other and comes out stronger with every obstacle is thrown in their path.

How can you not love it and to recommend it to everyone so they can love it too?

Rating: 4.5 Stars

I read this the moment it was up on my Kindle. Thank goodness for ARCs, I don’t have to wait that long and suffer the anticipation of getting the next book in this series.

Hunter Sloane had wanted Evangeline Ambrose ever since he saw her – imperfections, and all. Now that they are neighbors, he knew he needed to go slow with her and make her see and feel that she’s safe with him. He wanted to prove to her that she can trust him, that he won’t do anything to hurt her. But what if she discovers his secrets? Would she still stay with him? Or will it make her run away?

Evangeline valued her freedom after escaping from an abusive marriage. She wanted to have a fresh start somewhere. And a small, quiet town was the perfect place to it. Dating or even being around the opposite sex wasn’t really high on her agenda. But the cop next door was another story. He was good to her. He made her feel safe – but is it enough for her to trust him and once again risk everything?

I loved this book, and pretty much fell so hard for the characters, especially for Hunter. He can be an alpha all he wants, but he always makes sure to make Evangeline feel comfortable and safe. He matches her pace and never complains. He has his moments, but he was just perfect. Evangeline is a strong, strong woman who has withstood everything that was thrown at her. Now, she was brave enough to stand up on her two feet and fight for the life she deserves. I love their budding romance – it wasn’t cheesy. They didn’t have those petty quarrels and overwhelming drama we read most of the time in books – instead, they do what mature people do and talk it out (at least most of the time). They do have a pinch or two of drama between the two of them, but they always settle it out with their talks.

So far, Marquita Valentine had me hooked in the first two books of TAKETHE FALL series and continued up to the third one. A tough, hot cop with a mysterious past, and a vulnerable woman collided in this wonderfully crafted love story – about second chances in love and in life.

And here comes another love story that I’d be waiting for: Saylor’s. I’m excited to read her HEA next!!!

This book hit on every single one of my emotions. One of the best ever from Marquita Valentine.

Review copy provided by publisher

I’m a huge fan of Marquita Valentine and was so excited to see there was a new story in her Take the Fall Series. We first met both Hunter and Evangeline in the second book in the series, and it was absolutely the worst time in Evangeline’s life. I would like to issue a trigger warning to all readers, After We Fall deals with the recovery from an abusive marriage, though Ms. Valentine handles the story in a completely respectful way.

I loved the growth of both Evangeline and Hunter in this book. Hunter grew up with an abusive father, so he could totally sympathize with Evangeline. I liked that he understood her and her situation enough to give her the space she needed to feel comfortable with him. I loved that he was willing to go at any pace Evangeline needed to be in her life. Yes there was obviously an attraction even in the beginning between them, but I completely understood Evangeline being so hesitant to start something with another man.

I loved Evangeline started making friends again after she moved to Forrestville. Yes she had Hunter as a friend, but she needs girlfriends and I love that her neighbor Saylor becomes a true friend to Evangeline when she needs one the most. I really think having Saylor as a friend actually helped Evangeline be more open to other friendships and relationships.

I loved the slow build to Hunter and Evangeline going from friends to lovers. My only issue was the fact that Hunter wasn’t honest with Evangeline in the beginning about the cage fighting. I understood his reasoning, but as she hadn’t had choices in the past, I didn’t like he didn’t give her a choice in the beginning. I did love how protective Hunter was, but felt like in this instance, he was a bit overprotective.

I hated that Evangeline’s ex got back in touch with her. I really wanted to kick him in the junk for all he had done to her in the past and the fact that he tried to control her again after she had finally started over. However, I have to say I loved she was no longer the doormat he made her in the past and she was strong enough to actually stand up and take control of her life this time. I know it was partially the fact that Hunter has shown her what real love looked like and she had started to become the woman she was before her ex that helped her find the inner strength she needed.

After We Fall put me through the emotional wringer in the best possible way. I highly recommend this book and the entire series to everyone. I feel like it just gets better with each book. I can’t wait to see what happens in the next book.

I received an advanced copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

We were first introduced to Evangeline in When We Fall. She was a resident in the women's shelter where Piper worked and Hunter was the police officer that brought her there. It is now six months later and Evangeline is transitioning out of the shelter and into her own apartment. And that apartment just happens to be right across the way from Hunter. She tries to play off the fact that they have met before, but Hunter isn't having it.

Hunter has this overwhelming urge to protect Evangeline and he can't really explain it.
It’s been six months since I last spoke to her. One hundred and eighty days since I last saw her battered and bruised face. Four thousand, three hundred, and twenty hours since I last touched her vulnerable body. Not that I’m counting. I shouldn’t count. I shouldn’t think of her at all.

Yet . . .

Over the years, I’ve escorted countless women to shelters, but none have affected me on the same level as she did. Not a single one. I can’t get her out of my head. Can’t stop wondering if she’s safe, if she’s back with her sadistic husband , or if she’s lying dead on the side of the road.

When he discovers that she is now his neighbor, he finds that this may be the perfect time to get to know her better. Of course Evangeline is wary of him. Not only because he saw her at her worst, but she knows she is not ready for another relationship. She is just now slowly getting her life back together. Evangeline gets a job at the local animal shelter where she forms a friendship with her other neighbor Saylor (whose book is next!). But Hunter and Evangeline do become friends. Luckily for her, Hunter shows up at times when she needs another person to help her through and their friendship slowly becomes much more than that.

I loved Hunter and Evangeline. He completely understood why she was so wary to be anything more than friends and he was willing to stick around until that changed. He was sweet, caring and there for her on more than one occasion when she needed a friend and only a friend. But eventually their relationship does turn romantic and it turns out Hunter is exactly what Evangeline needed.

I look forward to reading Saylor's story. She was such a quirky character and was a great friend to Evangeline. She gets paired up with Hunter's friend Hayden and I can't wait to see how that unfolds.

I received an ARC from NetGalley

Wow, this is definitely my favorite book so far in the series.

The main characters are Hunter and Evangeline; both characters have traumatic pasts. Hunter is a cop, while Evangeline gets a job at an animal shelter. In this book, we get to meet Hunter's friends: Dwight and Hayden and Evangeline's new friend: Saylor. I really liked the secondary characters, and Saylor has become one of my favorites
Evangeline is a 26 year old who is in the midst of a divorce from her abusive husband (Penn the dirty douchebag). I enjoyed Evangeline's character because she was so strong even when she had a reason to be weak; at first she was wary of men (who can blame her with what happened to her), but she started to trust more people (Hunter and Saylor). So props to her, she was very strong-willed, and she was a great heroine.
Hunter is a 28 year old cop who also does some legal fighting on the side. If you read the second book, you would know that Hunter is the one that found Evangeline on the streets after trying to escape her abusive husband. He was so sweet, I honestly fell for him. He kept saying "I'm not a gentleman," but I would beg to differ because he was a gentleman, he put Evangeline's needs first and he knew how skittish she could be so he approached her cautiously. He was a great book boyfriend!!

I really did enjoy reading this book and I wish the next book was already out! It was a bit too rushed for me at the end, but the author got her point across.

This is a book that you definitely want to read! And I believe it could be read as a standalone, because past characters are mentioned very much, maybe once or twice... but you don't need to know their backgrounds to understand or even like this book.

After We Fall is the third book in the contemporary romance series, Take the Fall by Marquita Valentine. I have not read either of the first two books in the series, but this one caught my eye. It was a heartbreaking story, but also a sweet one. It is told in dual narrative between Hunter and Evangeline. By the way, can we just talk about how pretty of a name that is? I just loved both of the characters names. Hunter is a strong name and Evangeline is so pretty. I thought they were very fitting.

Evangeline knows Hunter as the cop who was there the night she finally escaped her abusive ex husband. I would have thought that would be a comfort to her to see him again, but it was much more of an embarrassment for her. But Hunter is not someone that is easily deterred. He stuck by Evangeline and was as patient as could be. I admired that about him. Hunter is just a good guy, through and through. I do have to say that I found his extra curricular activity very out of character for his day job. No matter how hard I tried, I couldn't get them to add up to me. It didn't make any kind of sense, to me at least. It was the only aspect of the book I didn't love.

After We Fall is a bit heavier of a contemporary romance than I normally read, but I really enjoyed it. Sometimes it is nice to read a more somber book to balance out the light and fluffy books. (I still think I prefer the light and fluffy books most of the time.) My heart just broke for Evangeline. It would be hard for it not to. But she is a strong person and she is a survivor. It was nice to see her get her happily ever after as well.

Bottom line: After We Fall is a great book for people that enjoy darker contemporary romances. It deals with some tough issues, such as abuse. In the end, it is a lovely romance for two characters that are easy to root for. I enjoyed it.
