As with almost all juvenile reference books on prehistoric life, the overwhelming focus is on dinosaurs, with things that came before and after given much less attention. This one does a reasonably passable job of introducing a large variety of extinct animals, with nice illustrations. It cannot be called an encyclopedia by any means though, not being alphabetical for one, and not really in-depth enough as well. The easy to flip through and handy size format does have its advantages, judging by how this is among the most commonly encountered children's book on the subject.
