Tim is 17, Catholic and conflicted. Though he escapes regularly into his daydreams of the English civil war, the war within himself is a bigger concern.
When his golden haired obsession Aaron, and mates John and Ray lose their fourth for a week's tromp through the Lake District & the Cumbrian mountains, Tim volunteers to fill out their party.
But then storms set in, the boys become lost and decide to wait out the rains in a cozy four man tent. Unsure of exactly where they are or if their food will last, it turns out that nothing is certain.

David Rees was born in London in 1936, but lived most of his adult life in Devon, where for many years he taught English Literature at Exeter University and at California State University, San Jose. In 1984, he took early retirement in order to write full-time. Author of forty-two books, he is best known for his children's novel The Exeter Blitz, which in 1978 was awarded the Carnegie Medal (UK), and The Milkman's On His Way, which, having survived much absurd controversy in Parliament, is now regarded as something of a gay classic. He also won The Other Award (UK) for his historical novel The Green Bough of Liberty. David Rees died in 1993.

After reading Quince I decided to re-read In the Tent by David Rees to refresh my memory. I first read the book over 20 years ago and thought it was wonderful.
To a degree it still holds up but now I've a bit more to now compare it to. The story of a young confused catholic gay boy who goes camping & hiking with three presumedly straight friends including the blond godlet that he's crushing on still makes for an interesting story. The idea that these four get stranded by a storm for a number of days just adds to the tension.
The unexpected development involving Ray is as magic as ever.
However the older and wiser reader in me now questions why the flashback 1646 story was entangled with the 1970's modern camping story. Yes, Tim is a history scholar and he pictures himself back at the time of the siege but the two stories don't seem to organically grow together. They constantly jarred me the reader. Also the few scenes set post 1970's were a bit jarring as well.
Overall I liked the story and the author can tell a good tale but the construction could have used some more thought. If I were to re-rate the book today I'd give it only three stars.

A good read if you like other David Rees books. However I felt the two stories didn't really have much connection and therefore caused a real jarring read. Recommended as a book to explore how queer youth literature started during the 70s and 80s.

Τέσσερις συμμαθητές αποφασίζουν να περάσουν μερικές μέρες στα βουνά. Ο αφηγητής είναι ο 17χρονος Tim Keegan, που παλεύει μέσα του να συμβιβάσει την ομοφυλοφιλία του και την καταγωγή του από αυστηρή και συντηρητική καθολική οικογένεια. Αυτός ο εσωτερικός πόλεμος εντείνεται από την έλξη που νιώθει για τον Άαρον Μπράουν και ο κόσμος της φαντασίας του τον φέρνει στην εποχή του Κρόμγουελ και του βρετανικού εμφύλιου πολέμου το 1644. Τα τέσσερα αγόρια, κάτω από συγκεκριμένες συνθήκες, θα μείνουν στην ίδια σκηνή για μέρες.
Το "In the tent" φαίνεται να κουβαλά φρέσκια την συνείδηση της αναδυόμενης γκέι κοινότητας της δεκαετίας του 70: αυτοαποδοχή, βεβαιότητα της φυσικότητας του ομοφυλόφιλου εαυτού σε κόντρα με την ερμηνεία των ανθρώπινων υποθέσεων από τη θρησκεία, αποδοχή της ανάγκης για απόλαυση, υποχώρηση στο δυνατό πάθος, χαρά του έρωτα.
Σημαντικό σε αντίστοιχα έργα είναι πάντα το στοιχείο εκείνο που συνηγορεί στην παράδοση, στην άφεση του εαυτού να ζήσει όπως του λέει η καρδούλα του. Χωρίς σκέψη, χωρίς μπλοκάρισμα, χωρίς ευνουχισμένο, αποδυναμωμένο πάθος.
Ο Rees (όπως και Keith Hale με το Συνταρτά του Έσσε ή ο David Levithan με τους στίχους του Ουίτμαν) βάζει τον έφηβο του να διαβάζει τον ποιητή Blake:
He who desires but acts not, breeds pestilence. Inside himself, inside himself 40
Αξιοσημείωτο στο βιβλίο είναι πως στη μικρή, έστω, ανάπτυξη των χαρακτήρων του βιβλίου ο Rees μιλά για την ταξική καταγωγή των ηρώων του και η κοινωνική ιστορία επιτρέπεται να αφήνει αποτύπωμα στην εμφανιση, στη συμπεριφορά και στην ψυχοσύνθεση των χαρακτήρων. Έτσι έχουμε την πολυτέλεια να γνωρίσουμε θετικούς ήρωες από οικογένεια αναρχο συνδικαλιστών Ισπανών.
Όλο το βιβλίο έχει ως βάση την γλυκιά αίσθηση της αποκάλυψης των κρυφών δυνατοτήτων ενός ανθρώπου στους άλλους, την αναγνώριση του, τελικά το πως ανακαλύπτουμε κάτω από δύσκολες συνθήκες τους άλλους και τον εαυτό μας και πως δενόνται οι ζωές.
Ενώ έχει νόημα η απεικόνιση της εσωτερικής πάλης μέσω του φαντασιακού κόσμου, πάλι είναι ελάχιστα πλούσιο σε εικονοποιεία, ανάπτυξη πλοκής, εμβάθυνση συναισθημάτων και αντιθέσεων. Το βιβλίο είναι απλό και ευχάριστο, κουράζει με τις εναλλαγές του πραγματικού και φανταστικού κόσμου, ωστόσο αποζημιώνει για όλους τους παραπάνω λόγους που αναφέραμε. Είναι ένα γλυκό συμπαθητικό βιβλιαράκι.
