Με το έργο του "Ξανθίππη" ο Ζεράλ Μεσαντιέ παρουσιάζει ένα αστυνομικό-φιλοσοφικό μυθιστόρημα που διαδραματίζεται στο χρυσό αιώνα του Περικλή.

Με εμπνευσμένο τρόπο, αναμειγνύοντας την ιστορική πραγματικότητα με τη μυθοπλασία, υφαίνει την πλοκή αυτού του βιβλίου στο οποίο η Ξανθίππη, η σύζυγος του άντρα που ενσαρκώνει στο πρόσωπό του τη φιλοσοφία, γίνεται αυτόκλητη ανακρίτρια, κατήγορος και τελικά αδιάκριτη μάρτυρας μιας εποχής που ακτινοβολεί ως τις μέρες μας.

Ο Μεσαντιέ σκιαγραφεί την προσωπικότητα της συντρόφου του Σωκράτη, παρουσιάζοντάς την όχι σαν μια αυταρχική και δύστροπη γυναίκα, αλλά ως ένα οξυδερκές πνεύμα που νιώθει τον παλμό της πόλης και αναπτύσσει ένα αίσθημα καρτερικής ανωτερότητας απέναντι στους άντρες.

Η Ξανθίππη γίνεται η καρδιά και η συνείδηση αυτού του κόσμου που γέννησε τη φιλοσοφία και τις τέχνες... αλλά και τα λάθη μας.

Βρε τον Αλκιβιάδη!! Τπτ δεν θυμόμουν γιαυτον, αλλά τωρα έχω πλήρη εικόνα.
Απογοήτευση και δεος!! Αυτά τα συναισθήματα κυριάρχησαν σε όλη την ανάγνωση. Σα να μην άλλαξε τπτ εδω κ 25 αιώνες .
Πάντως ο Messadie' δημιουργεί ένα μωσαϊκό πολιτών , πολιτικών κ Φιλοσόφων της εποχής του Περικλή, έως τον θάνατο του Σωκράτη κ τη δημιουργία της Ακαδημίας του Πλάτωνα βασισμένος στα κείμενα του Ξενοφώντα, του Πλούταρχου κ του Θουκυδίδη

I read this novel with the idea the whole thing would be a straight murder mystery set in ancient Athens. Xanthippe, Socrates' wife solves the crime early on and Alcibiades tricks the murderer into seeing the victim's "ghost"--really a double--and the man falls down the stairs and dies. Most of the novel recounts the events of the "Golden Age of Greece" and has the couple comment and shows how it affected them. We are carried through the Peloponnesian War and aftermath of turmoil in Athens to their deaths. A tavern owner, "Curly Locks", and customers give their opinions from time to time; I took them as some kind of comic relief. Plato, one of Socrates' students, says he plans to write down Socrates' ideas for posterity. After all, Socrates was once named by the Delphic Oracle as "The Wisest Man in Greece."

I was disappointed at first that the novel hadn't been completely what I expected. After the solution, I wondered where the novel would go. At first I would have given it two stars, but after I got rid of any misconceptions, I raised my rating to three. Socrates and Xanthippe made a good fit for each other; both were astute in their way. She was portrayed as the more practical and Socrates as an idealist. Xanthippe's supposed shrewishness was not in evidence. She had the duplicitous Alcibiades' number from early on. Either the French [original] title: MADAME SOCRATE or this title given to the German translation is just as good as the other since the novel emphasized each character. Unfortunately, there is no English translation as yet.

J'ai beaucoup aimé le livre bien que Messadié utilise de grands mots parfois mais il décrit si bien la vie quotidienne de la Grèce antique. Une manière d'apprendre l'histoire avec une grande histoire (fictive, Madame Socrate n'ayant laissé que peu de traces). Ce livre m'a donné le gout de lire d'autres livres de Gerald Messadié.

À noter que le roman historique m'énerve parfois car il peut enseigner aux gens qui connaissent peu le sujet des faussetés, des inventions prises pour du vrai. Monsieur Messadié à la fin de son livre clarifie son approche en écrivant le livre et j'ai beaucoup aimé.

Très déçue par ce roman qui porte très mal son nom : de Xanthippe, on fait rapidement la connaissance, personnage haut en couleurs dans l'Athènes de Périclès. Socrate n'est qu'un élément de décor. Par contre, les Alcibiade, les Philostephanis, les Demis, les Cléanthis et les Phillipide pullulent sous la plume de Messadié ; et franchement, je n'avais pas envie de lire un livre sur les arcanes de la démocratie athénienne boostée à la testostérone. Si vous aimez l'époque et le roman policier, c'est sans doute pour vous. Si vous pensez découvrir la vie (romancée) de la femme du plus célèbre des philosophes grecs, passez votre chemin. Ça m'arrive très peu souvent (mais je m'y force de plus en plus, par hygiène mentale), mais j'ai abandonné la lecture à la moitié, trop loin de ce que je recherchais.
