K R Meera has undoubtedly created a renowned space for her in Malayalam contemporary literature. This collection of 5 of her novellas is a grand evidence of her caliber, and range as a writer.
All five stories are a portrayal of complicated life situations, characters and emotions, with at most intensity. Yes, all stories have female protagonists, but not feminist. There are strong characters, both male and female. There are crude perspectives of both male and female put forth. The characters are too entwined that one can’t have existence without the other. That is what all of them, Geetha and the saint, Christie and Radha, Angella and Jayadevan, Madhavan and Thulasi, and at last Das and Prema, shows us.
With Meera’s signature narrative style, the book did give me moments to think about life in ways that I otherwise would have not. And that’s the magic of books that I am addicted to.
