It’s the Fourth of July weekend in Duck, North Carolina and twenty-thousand visitors are on hand to enjoy the parade, the festivities – and learn about the murder of Captain Bill Lucky.
Lucky is the captain of the new gambling ship, Andalusia II, which is modeled after the famous ghost ship that haunts the small town on the Outer Banks.
Whispers of unusual sea creatures surround Lucky’s death. It isn’t the first time that mermaids have been seen in Duck, but it’s the first time one of them has been accused of murder.
Mayor Dae O’Donnell has her hands full with setting up the parade, convincing her friend Trudy she shouldn’t call off her wedding, and getting her shop, Missing Pieces, ready for the summer crowd.
Dae doesn’t ask to be involved in Lucky’s death, but she can’t ignore it. If someone from the sea isn’t his killer, who is? And will he or she strike again to lay the blame on the town’s watery visitors?
Joyce Lavene and Jim Lavene are a wife and husband team who have written and published more than 70 books since 1999. They live in North Carolina with their family and enjoy cooking, photography and ghost hunting.
The July 4th festivities in Duck, NC are what you'd expect from a beach town. Parade, fireworks, good food and neat places to shop. The only thing different this year is the dead Captain Lucky. Since he was a bit of a ladies man, as well as a bit of a charming cad, there are no limit to suspects. However, the way he was found and the condition of the Captain's Quarters rather suggest that merfolk killed him. Which seems ridiculous to most except not to Dae. Captain Lucky had brought her an artifact he claimed could call the merfolk. Did the merfolk kill him to keep their existence a secret? Did the First Mate kill him to get his job? Was it a jealous woman that he had romanced and then dropped?
I really enjoyed this latest book in the series, it was full of a few surprises and a very nice guest appearance that was fun to read about. As well as a nice surprise but sad guest appearance to enjoy. Can't wait for the next book!
Fourth of July Weekend in Duck, Parades, festivities and Captain Lucky is murdered. Who would have wanted the captain of the gambling ship dead......was it a mermaid/merman who killed him? Is that possible for a mermaid/merman to do? Trudy is getting ready for her upcoming wedding to Tim. Dae is thinking about changes in her own life when she marries Kevin. I loved finding some other friends visiting from Charlotte. What a wonderful surprise! Oh and Grandma Eleanore.....not going to tell you! You have to read this book for yourself to find out. Wonderful story, with characters that I have grown to care about. Can't wait for the next one!!
For those of you who haven’t read this series, you’d be doing yourself a favor to do so. I only follow a handful of cozy series that have any sort of a paranormal feel to them. Or as I like to call them…Paracozies. Out of the ones I do follow, most of them are by Joyce & Jim Lavene. These authors have a wonderful flare for making the paranormal feel like every day, common place occurrences.
Every trip I take to Duck, North Carolina, courtesy of the Lavene’s Missing Pieces Mystery series, is better than the trip before. But this visit was truly enchanting and adventurous. After all, what could be more exciting than a mermaid and a ship’s captain who is just like every romantic hero from a high seas adventure story. Perhaps a mermaid killing that sexy sea captain? Honestly, there was so intrigue in this book, I found myself literally holding my breath.
In my opinion, A WATERY DEATH is the best installment in this series to date. As far as creating a must read story, the Lavene’s raise the bar on themselves with every new book they write.
A WATERY DEATH is a fun summer read for die hard fans of the Missing Pieces Mystery series and to new comers alike. And don’t worry new readers, you won’t feel lost starting the series with this book, but once you’re done reading, it will make you want to go back and start the series from the beginning.
I want to say I enjoyed this book and in ways I did but Dae actually got on my nerve. The Captain of the new gambling boat is killed in a mysterious way. His room is soaked and seaweed is everywhere. Then Dae has visitor. It seems mermaids are real. She starts telling people then decides maybe she shouldn't cause we don't want them caught and experimented on. Well duh! Then the issue with her wanting to bring her mom and grandma back. Another bad ideal. She just seems so immature to me at times.
I'm not really sure what to say about this one. On one hand, it was interesting and different; on the other hand, the plot was so far-fetched, even the International Space Station had problems keeping it in sight.
I haven't read much from these authors. This is my first time reading one of their cozy mysteries. The book is a contemporary mystery but has a slight pull of a paranormal cozy. The main character is the mayor of a small town in the Carolinas. There's a murder during the town's 4th of July celebration.
Sadly, this last book in the series just didn't quite work. It doesn't really feel finished, so I suspect that it was only a first draft when the authors died, and was published by their estate when perhaps it shouldn't have been.
A Watery Death is the seventh book in the A Missing Pieces Mystery series. Another delightful book from written by Joyce and Jim Lavene. This is the first book in this series that I have read and it captured my attention immediately. I loved how this light-hearted whodunit flowed from chapter to chapter with a fresh take on the well-written storyline. The mystery was good as the guilty party could have been any of numerous suspects including Duck, N.C. residents, regular visitors from neighboring towns or tourists attending the 4th of July festivities. This book could be read and appreciated as a stand-alone mystery, but it was fun to have an introduction into the past of several of the Duck quirky residents. As residents and tourists enjoy good food, quaint shops, a parade and fireworks the body of Captain Lucky was discovered on a pirate themed gambling boat. The charming chap, known to be a ladies man, wasn’t lucky! By outward appearance the Captain’s Quarters in which Captain Lucky was found have many signs leading one to believe that his death was at the hands of “Merfolk”. Shortly before Captain Lucky was found he asked Dae to keep a precious artifact, with the stated purpose of calling Merfolk safely in her Missing Pieces shop. Between the scene of the crime and the precious artifact questions abound. Do mermen and mermaids exist? Would a member of the merfolk population kill a human? Or, perhaps, a member of the Captain’s crew or a woman he previously had a relationship with? While attempting to keep the town’s festivities flowing, Mayor Dae is processing potential changes in her relationship with Kevin and assisting her friends Trudy and Tim prepare for their wedding. Numerous surprises were included in the well scripted plot which gave me, a reader new to this series, the opportunity to meet Dae’s Grandma Eleanore, her Grandfather and other established citizens and friends of the region. The authors have woven a tale that is filled with plenty of twists and turns, a little ghostly intrigue and regional folklore. The authors did a great job in keeping the suspense moving along until the final reveal. The mystery aspect of this tale was well thought out and planned. Each clue was destined to take the reader off on a different tangent. Keeping the killer elusive, but right in front the reader as well.
Words are inadequate to fully describe how I felt about this book, but they include amazed, delighted, excited, and grateful, for having the privilege of reading and reviewing a soon to be released book by the Lavenes. This tale left me with a yearning for the next book and further adventures in Dae’s magical, mysterious world. I eagerly await the next book in this delightfully charming series. If you like intriguing mysteries with a ghostly spirit, and insight into the magical, mystical world of Merfolk, then you don’t want to miss reading this addition to the Missing Pieces series.
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary advanced review copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed in this review are my own.
A Watery Death is the perfect summer read with its Fourth of July tourist island setting and the inclusion of mermaids. All I need is some sunscreen, sand in between my toes, and a nice cold drink to go along with this tale.
I enjoy paranormal cozy mysteries, and the Missing Pieces Mysteries definitely fit the bill. Dae is the mayor of Duck, North Carolina, and is also the proprietor of the Missing Pieces Thrift Store. She has a gift for finding lost things and reuniting them with the people to which they should belong. She can touch an item and see its history. The captain of the local gambling ship, Captain Bill Lucky, brings a family heirloom, a piece of coral carved into a cornucopia, to Dae’s shop hoping to trade it for some quick cash as he needs to leave town for a few days. Legend has it that a mermaid gave the horn to his ancestor, and blowing in it will summon seafolk. Unfortunately, the Captain’s luck runs out, and Dae finds him deceased in his quarters on the ship. His room is soaking wet and littered with seaweed and other sea detritus. How could the captain drown in such a setting? Was a mermaid/man to blame? Or a jilted lover seeking revenge since he was quite the charming ladies man?
In addition to the captain’s suspicious death, Dae is caught up with her friend Trudy’s wedding drama, her own engagement to innkeeper Kevin, and her duties as mayor with the influx of tourists for the July 4th festivities. Also, she is worried about her grandfather’s assumption of the police chief’s duties and loss of her grandmother and mother.
The Lavene writing duo do an admirable job of making the paranormal seem commonplace in the island community. It seems perfectly normal that Dae should have special abilities and that seafolk are about the island. I enjoy all of the characters here and look forward to future reading. It was such a treat to see a cameo of characters from one their other series. Such fun!
I greatly enjoyed my time on the Outer Banks of North Carolina and cannot wait to return.
I received a copy from the author in exchange for an honest review. This did not in any way influence my opinion.
I've said it many times and I'm sure I'll say it again, Joyce and Jim Lavene are masters when it comes to the cozy mystery.
The Missing Pieces series combines the small town cozy with time travel and some mythical creatures and a crossover from another one of their series. (In this case it is Peggy Lee, her husband, Steve and their dog, Shakespeare.
This is the 7th book in the series, but it can easily be read as a stand alone. I love Dae, and her ability to touch things and find out who they belong to and sometimes even travel in time.
This book revolves around the death of the gambling ship's captain and the sea people/ mermaids/mermen. The existence of these water people really get things hopping in Duck. There are more people in the town that have had encounters and some people that want to profit on them. The existence of Tovi and Lilly even cause some friction between Dae and Kevin.
Along with the mermaids and the murder there's some closure for one of the story lines involving Dae's grandmother just might have come to a close. I won't say how, because that would be a huge spoiler, but it is definitely one that affects the heart strings.
This was an excellent read and quite emotional for a cozy, especially as you get to know about the sea people and their interactions in the past with Duck residents.
I highly recommend this book and any book written by Joyce and Jim!
I was a huge fan of this series for the first three books, but my opinion gradually began to change as Dae's "powers" began to change. From being able to touch an object and see its history or touch a person to see where his or her lost item is, Dae began to be able to time travel, and now with this last book in the series, mermaids (and mermen) take center stage. This whole part of the plot just did not work for me, but I kept reading because of my fondness for the main character, the setting, and for the authors of the series (both of whom left us way too soon).
The paranormal and fantasy elements weren't the only things that bothered me. The mystery took a backseat to the rest of the action in A Watery Death, and for some strange reason, Dae suddenly decided that she had the right to start making decisions for everyone else. That's guaranteed to rub my fur the wrong way.
This book may have ended the series on a bit of a sour note for me, but I do recommend the first three books in the series: A Timely Vision, A Touch of Gold, and A Spirited Gift. They are filled with wonderful characters and a setting that you can see and smell and touch. And I won't even go into the history of the area that you'll be able to learn!
When Captain Lucky comes into her Missing Pieces Shop, Mayor Dae O'Donnell is surprised at the artifact he offers to sell. His family heirloom is a coral horn that legend says will call mermaids from the sea. She offers him five hundred dollars, but promises to keep it and not sell it, in case he changes his mind. But before she has a chance to safely store it away, a client comes in with her grandson, who grabs the horn and blows into it. The sound it makes sends shivers through Dae. Her sense of foreboding is confirmed when Captain Lucky's body is found in his cabin, a cabin drenched in seawater and seaweed. Once again, Dae tries to unravel a mysterious death in her beloved town of Duck, all the while trying to help her friends Tim and Trudy resolve a wedding glitch, and still puzzle out how to help her grandmother return back to them, after having been lost in a time warp. This is a fun series with interesting characters, including those that you absolutely need to have an open mind and just believe in all things possible and impossible. I look forward to the next book in this series. Disclosure: I was provided with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
This is my favorite series written by the Lavenes. Mayor Dae O'Donnell has a gift of being able to find missing items~~ and touching items and seeing their past. In this book, Captain Lucky has a horn that can summon seafolk. He sells it to Dae and is killed. Who killed him and why?? Was it the mermaid sister and brother?? A jealous husband?? The news reporter?? Read this fascinating book and find out who and why~~ plus a few other surprises thrown in.
Come celebrate the fourth of July in Duck, NC. Entertainment, fun , mermaids and murder are sure to get the festivities going. This is a fantastic read to start your summer off and help Trudy solve the mystery of who killed Lucky and why. This is a charming and brilliant book. The atmosphere and the town people bring you into the story and keep you hooked from the start you won't want to miss a single minute. I love this series and always look forward to what will happen next at Missing Pieces. Joyce and Jim are great story tellers and the certainly show it with this book.
Such a fun new book to the Missing Pieces series!! Mayor Dae Odonnel finds another body who is connected to seafolk. A mermaid and a merman. A very fun and puzzling book!#
These last two of the series that are self-published & poorly edited, are also the most implausible stories. Mayor Dae O'Donnell has a gift for finding lost things but her gift has evolved over the series into something much more psychic, thus causing more & more paranormal things to happen around her. When the authors were writing for a major publishing house, I think the editors kept the odd happenings under control, but once they were on their own, the authors seem to feel unbound. The last one involved demon ghost horses & this one is about merpeople. Both stories stretched my incredulity & I've been willing to give them some slack since it's a cozy paranormal mystery series. So I enjoyed the first 5, but the last 2 not so much. Although I enjoyed the characters, even they were not as interesting in these last two volumes. So I've finished the series & am on to new adventures.
I really liked this series and am sorry there will not be any more. It ended with so many loose ends and questions. Did Dae and Kevin get married? How did they explain Eleanore's reappearence and then disappearance, again? Did Mary Catherine and Horace get together after all? Did Dae try to contact her mother to prevent her from have the accident that killed her? Did Tovi come back for Cathi? How was Trudy and Tim's wedding? This series started out with Dae being able to find lost objects to finding missing persons. Then on to ghosts, then time travel and finally mermaids. It defnitely got stranger as it went along.
This is the last in the series. Once again, there were too many unexplained elements. Dae has become less likeable as the series progressed. She stubbornly refuses to listen to people who know from experience -- she has to have her own way. And as this series progressed, the fantastical has become less and less believable. And, if this is indeed the last in the series, it left us hanging as concerns certain relationships. Very aggravating. I read this book because I wanted to see if, after the disappointment of book 5, I would have my faith in the series reinstated. Oh, well.
This book is the 7th in a cozy mystery series that I have enjoyed over the years. However, with this book, it did not feel like it was written by the same authors. There were too many unbelievable things added to it that the mystery itself kind of got buried. Also, the writing seemed so amateurish- like it wasn't edited and revised and polished at all. It was very all over the place. So different from the previous books in the series. A disappointment.
The final episode of Missing Pieces ... I'm saddened that we will not get to see the weddings of Trudy and Tim, Dae and Kevin. I wonder what other mysteries of Duck were in the works, what other treasures Dae would find, if Gramps and Mary Catherine would get back together. Thank you Joyce and Jim Lavene for bringing Duck NC alive with its history and charm and, for me, memories of times spent in the Outer Banks. I have truly enjoyed all seven stories!
What appears to be a straightforward murder is complicated by the in door crime scene being soaked in sea water and littered in seaweeds that only grow in deep water. Just before being found dead he sold coral horn reputed to summon the sea folk when blown. Surely a merman or mermaid didn’t murder the ships captain and if so why? An interesting tale.
Creative story line, good characters but short on climax and suspense. Because I enjoyed the creativity in the characters, the mermaid/merman I would be willing to read another in the Missing Pieces series.
Great cozy mystery and it's fun to read books set in my adopted state of NC. Learning the nautical history along with a fun story is great since I am from New England by the sea and always enjoyed that aspect of life there.
Now, picture me frantically trying to pull on what little hair I have (back in March my school did Bald for Bucks and my hair isn't a half inch long.) Why am I trying to yank out what little hair I have? Simple! This is the first book in The Missing Pieces series that I have read and I just have to go back and read the first six. And my schedule right now is so crazy, if I add more books to my reading schedule, something else is going to have to go. Ah, who needs sleep anyway?
Seriously! I LOVED this book. I knew from the opening paragraphs this was going to be a great read. Even though I want to go back and read the previous six books, it isn't necessary to do so before reading A Watery Death. The story moves smoothly as a read alone, but if you are new to the series as I am, you will find that you like the characters so much you will want to read more about them. Dae is a wonderful character. There is something about her that just pulls the reader in. Perhaps her gift isn't just finding missing pieces, but finding readers who need a good story? The Lavenes do a fantastic job of mixing the magical with the practical. Even if you tend to be skeptical like Kevin, you can't help but enjoy the magic that surrounds Duck, North Carolina. Oh, and that's another reason I enjoyed this book so much. My husband and I spent a good bit of his military career at Ft. Bragg, so visiting Duck, North Carolina was like going home.
A Watery Death has a little something for everyone: murder, romance, mystery and small town ambience. Summer is here and if you are looking for a good summer read, then don't miss the one. And while you are at, join me in reading the other books in the series, too.
