Brian Michael Bendis

A comic book writer and erstwhile artist. He has won critical acclaim (including five Eisner Awards) and is one of the most successful writers working in mainstream comics. For over eight years Bendis’s books have consistently sat in the top five best sellers on the nationwide comic and graphic novel sales charts.

Though he started as a writer and artist of independent noir fiction series, he shot to stardom as a writer of Marvel Comics' superhero books, particularly Ultimate Spider-Man.

Bendis first entered the comic world with the "Jinx" line of crime comics in 1995. This line has spawned the graphic novels Goldfish, Fire, Jinx, Torso (with Marc Andreyko), and Total Sell Out. Bendis is writing the film version of Jinx for Universal Pictures with Oscar-winner Charlize Theron attached to star and produce.

Bendis’s other projects include the Harvey, Eisner, and Eagle Award-nominated Powers (with Michael Avon Oeming) originally from Image Comics, now published by Marvel's new creator-owned imprint Icon Comics, and the Hollywood tell-all Fortune and Glory from Oni Press, both of which received an "A" from Entertainment Weekly.

Bendis is one of the premiere architects of Marvel's "Ultimate" line: comics specifically created for the new generation of comic readers. He has written every issue of Ultimate Spider-Man since its best-selling launch, and has also written for Ultimate Fantastic Four and Ultimate X-Men, as well as every issue of Ultimate Marvel Team-Up, Ultimate Origin and Ultimate Six.

Brian is currently helming a renaissance for Marvel’s AVENGERS franchise by writing both New Avengers and Mighty Avengers along with the successful ‘event’ projects House Of M, Secret War, and this summer’s Secret Invasion.

He has also previously done work on Daredevil, Alias, and The Pulse.

Bendis executes perfectly on what Stan Lee sat out to do in 1962: Create a super-hero that every kid could relate to. The bullied, the alienated; the confused and yet ambitious archetype of any-kid America.

2000's Ultimate Spider-Man perfects the Peter Parker origin story-- Come power comes great responsibility. The true becoming of "the friendly neighborhood Spider-Man." Bagley's expressive and detailed faces makes portraits to Bendis' child-like imagination. A Saturday morning cartoon—a still of my past—but with the wisdom that most silver and golden age comics failed to express before.

This world is believable. Peter Parker is believable. We finally believe in the impact that the loss of Uncle Ben has on him. Naive and confused, burdened by the thousand whits of every pubescent high-school nightmare— this while having all of Earth-1610, New York City to shoulder.

It’s a story about power, and the consequence resulting from it. Issues of our hero and the quintessential Mary Jane, trying to hold on to any semblance of teenage romance. His relationship with Aunt May, and whether to confess his Spidey identity to her. His relationship with Gwen Stacy and...Carnage. His relationship with Harry Osbourne, and what is left of his friend. Ever growing, ever changing, and ever falling apart. Change and growth—to come to terms—important themes that were only superficially touched upon in past iterations is everything in the modern context.

And then there’s the elephant in the room: the burgeoning scientific disappointment that a young Peter Parker has to endure. Norman Osbourne, Dr. Connors, Doc. Ock, Eddie Brock; as geniuses turn mad, admirers gone corrupted, exemplifying the dangers of bio-technology in the hands of its main culprit: Os Corp.

In every advance through human vivisection, the unrelenting evil enterprise, driven by hungry and unhinged scientists, is in perpetual strive for glory. AT ANY COST! Everything, all madness in Spidey’s universe begins with the desire to manipulate genetics in more ways than one man could handle. We get the Goblin. We get the Symbiote. We get the metal octopus and the Lizard. And we get a borderline emaciated Spider-Man. The 15 year old superhero who is cursed to save the world from the madness that science created.

And it’s grotesque.

Ultimate Spider-Man is a continuous narrative that reaches its climax with the infamous clone saga. But it succeeds where the original has failed before (this time actually making sense). Yes, Ultimate Deadpool is awful; and past Parker’s second confession, Bendis’ Spiderman shows all the signs of a series that has gone on for too long. But for 111 issues, Ultimate Spider-Man is the complete Spider-Man origin story. One with plenty of amazing moments in which comic fans can finally rejoice, for there’s a version of Peter Parker that is worth rooting for.

Minus the horribly outdated slang (seriously, I was a teenager when this came out, and I NEVER heard my peers talk like that), I really enjoyed this. I'd never read this series in full, though I have read quite a bit of the Spider Verse. A quick , fun, easy read.

Where do you start with Spiderman!? A few times I've been tempted but you look at the back catalogue, how fast they release new stuff, tie ins, crossovers etc etc. It's so vast I have always just never bothered.

I got the itch (again) and this time decided to try tackling it through picking up Marvel Unlimited and working my way through from the Ultimate line to modern day as this also introduced Miles, a character I got introduced to through the games and liked a lot.

This issue was pretty standard fare, you cannot be aware of Spiderman and not know his origins and this is the "ultimate" take on this. I like the art, it flows well and no need for years of back knowledge. Onward and upward from here, only a decade plus worth of issues to catch up to the modern day!!

Great opening for series!

Saya baca versi terjemahan m&c Gramedia Majalah.

"Uh-oh, looks like Parker's about to pull a 'Carrie'"

We're introduced to a 15-year-old Peter Parker. He's gifted, intelligent, and mercilessly bullied by his classmates.

On a field trip to Oscorp Industries, Peter is bitten by a genetically enhanced spider, causing him to have a reaction and passing out.

Head of Oscorp, Norman Osborn investigates into Peter following his accident and learns that he's changing on a molecular level, and not expected to survive much longer.

Meanwhile, Peter is learning that since his spider bite, he's developed an almost sixth sense, and can now scale walls...

Finally going to start this series. It has been on my radar for a long time and I have heard nothing but high praise for it. It is definitely an older comic and has that feel and vibe but it immediately gets going and tells the origin story. There are little differnces but it is still very true to the source material so far.

The artwork was good but from someone who read the original Spider-man in the original time in the original continuity... this Peter Parker lives in a weird, weird world. Hippie Uncle Ben, snippy Aunt May, jock Harry Osborn.. lions and tigers and bears - oh my.

amazing!

Never really read many Spiderman comics before but this Ultimate version of a young Peter is awesome & I love how heavily Norman Osborn is involved in his origin like he knows about Peter and wants to study him that’s crazy!

Just trying to gauge whether or not it’s worth spending money on the omnibus…
1st issue was as expected. Very much like the films.
Very quick read. Took me about 13 minutes for this 40 page issue. And that’s on my phone. Would’ve been faster physically I think.

This came out in 2000 so it's been a very long time since I've read it. So I'm going through this again the whole series.

#1 – “A Teen, A Spider, and the Weight of the World”

Peter Parker is bitten by a genetically-altered spider and suddenly finds himself grappling with incredible powers. Beyond the thrill of newfound strength, he must confront moral choices that foreshadow the lifelong responsibility of being Spider-Man. Bendis’ dialogue makes Peter’s humor, awkwardness, and teenage anxieties instantly relatable, while Bagley’s art captures both the excitement of superpowers and the vulnerability of a teen on the brink of destiny.
