The Wineland Sagas Book One The Saga of Leif the Lucky: The Lost Viking Colonies of North America

Rate this book
Vikings in North America? Trading with the natives and starting new colonies? Five hundred years before Columbus? Leap aboard young Leif Eiriksson's ship and sail west to the edge of the ocean. Voyage into the great unknown with Leif as he discovers a beautiful but hostile new world he names "Wineland the Good."
In "The Wineland Sagas" the author serves up an adventure stew of historical fiction, based on a few known facts about Vikings in North America. Blend in some heroic struggles with the natives, flavor with the spice of mystery, throw in a dash of dry Nordic humor and you have "The Wineland Sagas" trilogy.
The main action revolves around the conflict of iron age Vikings and stone age natives. Mother Nature combines with the native tribes to challenge first Leif and then his descendants in an epic battle for survival.
The common thread binding the three books of "The Wineland Sagas" is the mystery that to this day surrounds the Vikings' North American venture. Where exactly did they explore? What happened after Leif's initial discovery? Where were their outposts or colonies? Were they successful? For how long?
The trilogy begins with "The Saga of Leif the Lucky" and sets the stage for the sagas with the initial discovery and colonizing of the new found lands. Book Two, "The Battle for Wineland" describes the struggle of Leif's descendants to maintain their foothold in the New World against overwhelming odds.
Book three, "The Last Viking in Wineland" takes the reader through an unexpected series of events that seal the Viking colonies' fate. The surprising conclusion is not what conventional thought has led us to believe about this first chapter in the European colonization of America.

This first book of The Wineland Sagas by Milton Franson is a very interesting look at what the "true" discovery of the New World, at least by Europeans, might have been like. His characterization of Lief "The Lucky" Erickson breathes life into a figure that was little more than a name learned in passing during my (and I suspect most other people's) education.

Franson writes with strength and confidence. He's not afraid to make us laugh, and he's very skilled at making us want to turn each page a little faster. I recommend this book without reservation!

The good: the author really does his homework, and I loved learning about the theories of Viking exploration in the Americas. I’m glad I read it for that reason.

The downside: the author makes boring choices. Flat seas when there should be storms, polite conversations that could have conflict or intrigue. It’s Historical Fiction, you can make it as exciting as you want to. He just… doesn’t.
