When the uniform comes off, there’s no holding back.

Jaycee Hanson has the best seat in the house in Psych 301. Right behind Tyler Johnson, ROTC captain and star of her erotic fantasies. But while lusting from afar, she’s come to one disappointing He doesn’t seem to date outside his race.

When an accidental touch near the end of class turns into an impromptu foot rub, the rest of her wet-noodle bones are willing to go anywhere Tyler leads. She just never expected to be led into the nearest stairwell.

Tyler isn’t sure what to make of the smart, beautiful woman in his arms. If he’d had any idea Jaycee was interested in him, he would have made a move long ago. But each time he’s looked her way, she’s avoided his gaze.

A blissful afternoon at his place seems the start of something special—until objections to their relationship arise from an unexpected source. And Jaycee starts to wonder if sizzling sexual chemistry is enough.

Contains a semi-public quickie against a wall, impromptu picnics, and a hero who knows where to draw the line—and it’s not between him and his woman.

Olivia's Goodreads account is pretty slim. Look for Alanna Coca's Account (http://www.goodreads.com/author/show/... see what she's reading. To keep Goodreads reader-oriented, Olivia does not leave ratings on books she's read, nor does she comment on reviews, but she appreciates each and every reader who invests time in her work.

Olivia Brynn is the very saucy alter ego of romance author Alanna Coca. Olivia was the one who lured Alanna into trouble as a child. She also would have been the one to get her mouth washed out with soap. Since controlling Olivia wasn't as easy as she thought, Alanna decided to set her alter ego free with Olivia's first book, For a Price, a story about one woman's journey to sell her virginity. Other books followed, earning five-star reviews and bestselling status. Alanna realized what fun Olivia had writing sexy romances without censor.

Olivia writes contemporary erotic romance near a window where the view of the Rocky Mountains beckons her to run naked through the tall foothill grasses. Except when it snows.

Fast and hot like an explosion of fireworks! Whew boy, this one got going fast and hard in this series of sultry encounters between two college students who had a thing for each other and finally did something about it.

Quickie reads are generally not my thing, but once in a while...
Yeah, this was that moment. There was just enough development so that I could buy into the story and the characters, but the author wisely left things in the right way for the ending. My first time with the author and I'm pretty sure that if I get in this mood again that I will check out her stuff.

Jaycee Hanson has been sitting behind the delectable Tyler Johnson in class for most of the semester. Her lusty thoughts should have scorched him by now, but she is pretty sure he barely knows she exists. He is her secret crush and she watches him from afar noting that he only goes around with black girls and doesn't seem interested in a white girl.
But then one day in class, Tyler proves her very wrong. He not only acknowledges her tentative flirty advance, but he makes it clear that he is hot for some action right now. Jaycee has never been this bold, but she wants this so they end up together.

Tyler is never thought the pretty white girl would actually give him a chance. He has wanted Jaycee for quite some time and so he is alert to her signal that she is interested in him. Being with Jaycee is all that he imagined and he sees this as the start of something good until heated words by someone close to him send Jaycee running.

Two classmates secretly want each other and finally go for it. They deal with a moment of racial tension caused by someone else and have to decide if they are both serious about something more in this fast hot read. It jumps right in with minimal development, but for what it is, that was no surprise for me. I liked what I saw of the characters and their situation. I liked that the author didn't try to do too much, but I did feel that this one ended abruptly. I knew where things were going, but still, it just stopped.

All in all, this one unapologetically is was it is- a fast, hot interracial New Adult read that I would recommend for those who are looking for that very thing.

My thanks to Net Galley for the opportunity to read this book in exchange for an honest review.

Karia’s Quickie Review

This one was short…and steamy. The angst was their apparent tension (each not knowing the other was interested) and their race. As a blond white woman who grew up in a town in Canada with probably 3 black people (all adopted by white families), I had never encountered any resistance to black and white coupling. I just didn’t see it as an issue…my sister is marring a retired military black man next month! Tyler’s sister’s reaction was no overly surprising, but only because I saw the movie “Waiting to Exhale”. I truly had no idea…I love people…every colour, every religion and every sexuality of the spectrum. Love who you want to love and be kind in all things…Tyler was yummy and Jaycee enjoyed everything about him…enjoy this happy for now quick read!

Short, Sweet, and Sexy Hot!! Loved Tyler and Jaycee. Only wish it had been longer. I could definitely have read a full length novel about these two. This is a definite reread for me. :)

Several years ago, when Samhain Publishing announced that they were closing, I scoured their pages and grabbed as many ebooks as I could before the site went down. One of those books was At Ease, a short, erotic, new-adult novella set at a fictional university with an interracial couple as the romantic leads. All in all, the book delivered on the premise of being hot and quick. Where the book falls short, in my opinion, is that it wants to also tackle a serious subject, or rather, "engage" in the serious subject that people in interracial relationships may deal with prejudice from outside parties. The problem is (and I've discussed this before in my reviews for the Man of the Month Club series) is that novellas are not the proper format to take on such subjects, mainly because these subjects deserve more time than a novella can give them.

**stand to attention for some spoilers**

Our story begins in your typical, American, university lecture hall, where our heroine, Jaycee, is making moon eyes at the back of the head of Tyler, our romantic hero. Jaycee has been crushing on Tyler for quite some time ("lusting" may be the more appropriate word, though I want to give Jaycee a little credit in that she isn't *just* lusting after Tyler's bod, but would love to engage in a deeper relationship if he'd be willing). But either way, Jaycee grows bold during the lecture and gently nudges her foot ever so slightly against Tyler's arm (apparently he's sitting right in front of her), and much to her shock and possible embarrassment, but also delight, he "traps" her foot in his arm, and then proceeds to massage her foot for the rest of the class.

The sexual tension only kindles from there, and when the class is over, both Jaycee and Tyler find themselves under a set of stairs, getting quite handsy with one another, and revealing that *both* of them have been fantasizing about one another for an indistinguishable amount of time. Thank heaven Jaycee decided to play footsie with the man's arm, because I'm wondering if anything would have happened AT ALL if she hadn't; the guy seems clearly confident in his charms, I'm really surprised he didn't simply turn around one day and ask her out, but I suppose the author tries to answer this by having the two state that they thought the other wouldn't be interested in them because "they had never seen them interact with people outside of their race".

Not going to lie, a little red flag went up in the back of my head at that admission. It seems perfectly innocent, in some respects, and it's a worthy observation to make. And it does bring a little "discomfort" into the conversation, but again, that discomfort is perhaps "worthy" of being present, because if we pause to think of our own lives, how many people do we interact with outside of our racial/cultural group? Are we aware? Or are we "colorblind" when it suits us? The red flag that this explanation brought forth for me was when I realized there was going to be some dialogue about race, but I had a feeling it wasn't going to be handled as well as it could be.

This dialogue is brushed aside for the rest of the chapter as well as the next two, because we have some PENT-UP SEXYTIMES to get to, people! And they are indeed, hot n' heavy, so if that was all you were looking for, then the book delivers. But then by the time we get to the end of chapter 3 (the book is only 5 chapters long), that dialogue rears its head again when Tyler's siblings show up at his apartment and his sister in particular gives Jaycee the stink eye.

Oh, I had so many problems with this! And not, perhaps, for the reasons the author intended.

First off, we have the stereotype of the "angry black woman", upset that her brother is with a white woman. Tyler tries to explain why his sister was upset because she's still hurting from past relationship, in which an ex left her for a white girl. Oh please, can we not. Can we not go down this path? I'm not saying such wounds or prejudices don't exist, I'm not that naïve; but it's also an extremely tired stereotype, and all it does is villainize the black woman in this scenario. Sweet Jaycee is "meanly picked on" by Tyler's sister, and even goes so far as to say (in her head) that she is the victim of racism, that she's "suddenly the minority".

I was lying down while reading this, and I did turn my face into my pillow in that moment and screamed. Oh no, that did not just happen...

I don't know anything about Olivia Brynn, so I will choose to give her the benefit of the doubt and believe that she, like many other white women (myself included), have misunderstood the term/understanding of "reverse racism". What Jaycee experiences is racial prejudice; she is unfairly judged by another person based on the color of her skin. But this is different from racism. Racism is connected to power, systemic power to be more exact. Jaycee may be the "minority" in the sense that she is the only white person in a room with three other people, all of whom are black, but she is *not* the "minority" in the sense that she still has a great deal of power, or rather, her systemic power has not been taken away because her racial group (white, Eurocentric) controls authority in government, law, etc. For example, if Jaycee brought up a complaint about her treatment to either the school or law enforcement, that actions that would be taken are much more likely to be in her favor, rather than the other way around. There's a moment earlier in the book, when Jaycee and Tyler are nearly caught by a passing professor, when they're having their sexy rendezvous under the stairs. The professor (who I assume is white) looks at both of them, no doubt assesses what has taken place, but looks directly at Jaycee and asks her, with a note of serious concern, if "she's alright". Now I'd like to think this professor would be every bit as "concerned" with Jaycee if the guy he saw her with was white, but because of the state the world in which we live, where black men are more often pulled over or questioned due to their skin color, I can't help but feel the menace that passes beneath the professor's questions. And it bothers me that the author quickly brushes that moment aside, in favor of moving the "plot" along so that the two can get back to Tyler's bedroom to finish what they had started.

Jaycee doesn't do herself any favors by choosing to leave the confrontation, rather than stand up for herself and declaring that she cares for Tyler. Instead she sneaks out of the apartment while he and his sister argue behind closed doors, goes back to her sorority house and feels sorry for herself. And we the audience are supposed to feel sorry for the poor wittle white girl who was picked on the mean black lady. At least Jaycee does berate herself for leaving, realizing that was a DUMB thing to do (and it was), though instead of acting on her realization, she continues to mope, and it's Tyler who seeks her out and more or less "apologizes" for his sisters words and the hurt feelings they may have caused. Ugh.

The book ends with Tyler and Jaycee deciding to turn this "fling" into a relationship; they go out for dinner, they spend the night together, she's invited to be a part of his intermural softball team, where she wows his friends with her sports prowess. (And there's another red flag moment that happens here: she didn't reveal to Tyler that she was good at softball, so when she makes a throw that takes him out, he starts charging toward her, his arms outstretched, asking "what the hell was that?" to which Jaycee *admits* that if she didn't see a certain spark in his eyes, she'd be "afraid" of him in that moment). Ooooohhhh no, no, no, no, no this is *not* good; I truly hope this wasn't the author's intention, but in that tiny detail she does perpetuate a stereotype of the "scary black man coming for the white women".

As for the conflict between Jaycee and Tyler's sister, it's apparently "resolved", thanks partially to Jaycee's softball talents, and partially due to an unseen conversation between her and Tyler, or so I'm guessing. It's possible she may have realized her judgments of Jaycee were wrong, but again, any depth to Shanay's thoughts/feelings/opinions/etc. is brushed aside in favor of a quick happy ending to this already short story. And that's the problem; At Ease wants to have its cake and eat it too; it wants to be a novella dealing with the topic of interracial relationships, while at the same time rushing such serious moments for the sake of either sex or a "feel good quick-fix". And that isn't fair. It's not fair to the topic or to the real-life romances of interracial couples. And it's definitely not fair to the reader. Allow readers to deal with the discomfort that the book brings into play, don't throw mentions about racial prejudice, only to brush it aside or worse yet, delve into stereotypes.

At the end of the day, while I can give a positive note to the well-written sex scenes and the potential romance blossoming between Tyler and Jaycee, I find myself leaning more on the negative notes, especially those that I mentioned above. And I hate to say it, but I feel that Olivia Brynn, in her desire to write a romance featuring an interracial couple, ended up turning that couple into a fetish. And that's something we should never feel at ease about. 1.5 to 2 stars

While this is a quick read and actually started out really sexy and fun.... it nose dived for me. I found parts of the sex scenes quite humorous with the terminology used. It could've been much better if silly terms like 'his pole', not to mention the physical impossibility of some of the positions (think stairwell with womans jeans only down to midthigh... don't see that working no matter how bad you want it)

While there is a plot, there is mostly just sex. I think if we'd gotten to know the characters and they'd gotten to know each other before their first quickie made them both emotionally invested in each other, then it could've worked. I understand things getting carried away and having a quickie with a strange... especially in the college setting, but not the way it went down here unfortunately.

However, that being said, I did like the easy flow of the author's style and the way she portrayed her characters in a unique light. I wouldn't mind getting to know Jaycee better knowing more about her life and where she goes from here because she was an interesting character that I connected with.

Hunter's Review

I think this is such a good story that five teacups really doesn’t do it justice. I would give it ten teacups if I could. Jaycee and Tyler sit in the same area of their psych class, both noticing each other but never speaking until an impromptu foot massage changes their lives.

The sex between them is HOT but objections to their being from two different races threaten to derail them before it ever gets started. Ms. Brynne, the alter-ego to Romance Novelist Alanna Coca, does a great job of using little touches to create a complete story even with the short word count. I’m thinking specifically of something that takes place in the hall after they almost caught during one of their hot early moments. A third party behaves very realistically and I loved it because she didn’t try to sugar coat how hard some of these issues are. At no time are any of the character vilified or made to be bad people.

It’s complicated and Ms. Brynee lets it be complicated. I loved this book and you will love it for the romance, the writing, the plot, and the hot sex scenes that don’t shy away from real moments. Bravo.

~~I received a free copy of this book to read and review for Wicked Reads~~

This is a quick, fun and sexy read. It actually deals with quite a few issues whilst also delivering an introduction to a couple who like to party. Combining the issues of uniform, colour and family in a novella is ambitious, and gives us a peek at what they are likely to face in the long term.

It is short, well written and ideal for an evening's entertainment.

4.5 stars! Read this is one sitting... short story/novella about two hotties (an interracial couple) who had been lusting over each other in a college class, and finally get to doing it. Great sex scenes and appreciated the safe sex talk. Taking off half a star because I wanted it to end with a sex scene too! Ended quite abruptly. But highly entertaining and engaging read!

Instead of listening to the professor talking at the front of her psych 301 class, Jaycee Hanson is too busy fantasizing about the man in the seat directly in front of her. However, he doesn’t seem to notice her until an innocent brush of her foot against him leads to so much more once class is over.

Tyler Johnson never expected to capture Jaycee’s attention. He’s wanted her for months, but it’s as if she doesn’t know he exists. Until he feels her foot brushing against him in class and he gives her a spur-of-the-moment foot rub. One thing leads to another and soon they find themselves enjoying a very intimate encounter in the stairwell after class.

This is a very short and fast-paced book from the moment Jaycee and Tyler find themselves giving into their mutual attraction. The plot and dialogue are strong and I enjoyed this book so much that I was surprised how quickly I got to the end. Jaycee and Tyler have a major obstacle to overcome – his sister. She doesn’t like the fact that Tyler is dating outside of their race and her words really broke my heart. How could someone be so spiteful just because an old boyfriend abandoned her for someone of a different race?

As for the sex scenes, let me just say that Jaycee is one lucky woman. In Jaycee’s eyes, the real Tyler is even better than the fantasies and those observations really shine through in the dialogue. Their strong chemistry spills over onto the pages nicely with some very sensual romantic moments. What I liked so much about both characters is that they didn’t let anyone’s prejudice derail any chance of them having a future for too long because honestly, these two made a wonderful couple.

Overall, Ms. Brynn has done another great job of penning a short story with a hero and heroine that most romance readers will fall in love with.

awful cover... well, the guy's pretty hot but the woman's hands look old and the fake nails just made it worse.
Interesting story, nice start with the scene at the classroom... that was hot!
I liked Jaycee, didn't think much of Tyler and was a bit disappointed after the sister thing.
