Doubleback #2

Double Down

Rate this book
After surviving a deadly attack by a psychopathic killer, homicide detective Rowan Muir is ready to take his relationship with ex-deputy sheriff and former ex-boyfriend Jude Anderson to the next level. Trouble is, Jude is happy with going slow. As in glacial. And, fair enough, their previous attempt as a couple wasn’t exactly smooth sailing. It took murder and the volcanic attraction between them for both men to put old grievances aside and try once more.

But the past rears its ugly head again when Rowan’s drug-addicted brother goes missing. Rowan is summoned home and is immediately mired in family dysfunction better seen in a rear-view mirror. When Jude agrees to help Rowan investigate his stepbrother’s disappearance, Rowan fears his fragile relationship with Jude won’t survive the stress.

Being back in his hometown dredges up old fears, a lot of baggage, and murder. Soon Rowan has to decide if he is going to double down on his relationship with Jude, or if it’s wiser to pick up his chips and split for good.

Re-read October 2016 Now on to book 3!

I loved Doubleback, the first book about the smoking hot duo Jude and Rowan, so I was particularly excited for the sequel Double Down. The first book left us with a lovely HFN but I'm a HEA girl, so I ate this book up in one sitting.

All is not roses and sunshine in Jude and Rowan's lives six weeks after they renewed their romance and were almost killed by a homicidal manic. Rowan is still healing from his arrow through the shoulder and both men have inner dialogues going, saying the same thing. "I don't want to seem too needy and clingy and scare him off." "I won't be able to survive another break-up, so I'd better keep a little distance." *sigh* Silly boys. Communication is key!

In this book, we learn all about Rowan's angst ridden, lonely childhood and his good-for-nothing step brother, Shane and step-mother, Sunny. Sunny calls Rowan in hysterics, telling him that she thinks her son has been murdered. Rowan brushes it off as his step-mother's usual drama, but Jude talks him into visiting and having a look at the situation. Once again Jude and Rowan are in the middle of a mystery, unofficially this time since Rowan is on medical leave and Jude is no longer in law enforcement. Lots of angst and drama prevail!

I loved the progression of the relationship between these men and the sex was as HOT as ever. The scene in front of the fireplace? Let me just say, make sure you have a fan handy. Melt-the-paint-off-the-walls hot. The author mentions at the end of the book that there is more of the sinfully delicious duo yet to come. I'm tickled pink and anxiously await the third book!

HIGHLY recommended. Make sure you read Doubleback first, if you haven't already or you will be lost. This is not a stand-alone.

Double Down picks up right where Doubleback left off, with both guys agreeing to take “one day at a time" in their relationship and let the future take care of itself.
The problem with that was that the “one day at a time” philosophy led to uncertainty.
What exactly were they? Single? In a relationship? Fuck buddies? Significant other? I will tick the "it’s complicated” box for them.
They knew very well that they wanted more from this relationship. Yet, none of them could speak it out.
Both guys were burnt in the past which made them very afraid of showing their feelings.

“But Jude, as always, was a hard one to read, a man who defended his heart behind a fortress built of stony silences and shielded expressions.”

Dammit this no talking nonsense and invisible walls!
There were occasions where people would ask if they were together and Jude would answer: We’re casual. Jude thought that Rowan needed space, he also wasn’t sure if Rowan wanted to be more than a fuck buddy.
Rowan would go mad! He didn’t want to be just a fuck buddy. But instead of letting this crap out and spilling his guts to Jude, he would sulk. Making Rowan speak out - what was the problem, was like pulling a tooth out.
Swear to God, the bloody guys had no conversations skills. I want just to... arghh!

This lack of communication drove me mad. It was so frustrating at times! But I guess that was the way the author chose to play this, plot wise.

Between the two MC’s Jude was my favourite. He could be tongue tied about his feelings but the affection and tenderness demonstrated by him against Rowan were visible in his attitudes and gestures.

Rowan had a bit of a hard time about coming out. I was relieved when, in the end of the story, he finally managed to get closure with his coach about being gay. I hope it brings peace to him in the next sequel and he just be.

The story remained strong with regard to the mystery, this time, a link from Rowan’s past.

Overall, it was a great read. I get bored very easily in a series. It didn’t happen here. Perhaps because the guys are a mesh made in heaven!
Or should I say hell? Darn!!!! They are so hawt!

I am looking forward to the next instalment.

4.5 Stars!

I really really like this series even though Rowan and Jude seem to be in a constant state of "one step forward, two steps back". They have a real problem communicating outside of the bedroom. But I still really like both characters.

Another good mystery plot going on in this one...which keeps things interesting. It's a good mix between the suspense and romance.

I like the length of these books, but it also just means we never get an HEA. I've decided to stop with this book (well if you don't count the holiday novella) because I know the next one ends in a cliffy of sorts.

I'll wait for the rest of the books to continue on. Both book 1 and 2 had satisfying enough endings for me.

I really like this authors writing and plan to check out some other books. I think my only complaint would probably be for them to have just a bit more steam. Regardless I definitely recommend this series!

This is the second book in this series about Jude and Rowan. It should be read after book 1, since this is not a stand-alone.

I think I enjoyed this one even more.

These guys are back together again, after they seperated for a year and things are still a bit new and fragile. Both of them have all sorts of feelings, but the dumbasses don't talk. They keep everything locked inside, afraid the other will make a run for it, if they don't.

This time we get more info on Rowan and his childhood, when the two of them go to his hometown, because of his missing stepbrother. Things between the two of them get pretty tense, but they still get pretty hot a couple of times too...which was awesome ;)

Even though the MC's were both a bunch of stubborn asses, I really enjoyed reading this one. I also liked the fact that we get the pov from both men, instead of just Jude's, as was the case in book 1.

I think I'm going to wait with reading book 3 though, because I found out it ends on a cliffie. I hate cliffhangers and since this one ends in a very nice hfn, I will just wait until all books are released to read the rest.

4 stars from me ;)

R-read marathon of the first two books today to get ready for book #3

And I love it when a book is as amazing as the first time I read it. Like Doubleback this book kept its original rating.

This time, Jude and Rowan are on a more personal mission to find out more about Rowan's unbeloved missing stepbrother. This is a journey into a difficult past, though, and they not only have to deal with this, but also to struggle with themselves and their still somewhat fragile relationship until forgiveness, absolution and the acceptance of their love for each other is waiting at the end.

There were times when I wanted to clash their heads together and shout "Talk, goddamn it!", but there were also scenes... Well, let's just say, no way you would want to miss out on this

in front of a

Phew, this was hot! And I don't mean the fire... ;-)

Love Rowan and Jude! This book was mainly all about the romance. The sexual tension and sex scenes were so hot. The romance was rocky, though. Both guys had problems communicating with each other and were stubborn. I couldn't put the book down until it was finished. I'll be reading the third book in this series, next.

*ARC kindly provided by the author in exchange for an honest review.*

I'm not a big fan of established couples, especially when it takes a whole series for them to get their HEA. BUT I'm definately hooked on this one.

This book picks up six weeks after the end of Doubleback. Now, if you think that Jude and Rowan are in their honeymoon period, think again. They still haven't admited their feelings, neither of them has let his guard down and it is pretty clear that they still don't know each other all that well.

There is a serious lack of communication between these guys. They both acknowledge that there are imortant issues that need to be addressed but they just don't want to or are afraid to discuss them. And every time someone finds the courage to start a conversation, it all stops because of an external cause. And this is my only niggle with this story.

The mystery plays a big part in this book too. Rowan's stepbrother is missing, so he returns to his hometown to help find him. Despite their relationship problems, Jude is there, with him, every step of the way. IMO the author really knows how to write mystery. Not the kind that makes you want to bang your head on the wall, but the kind that keeps you interested and invested to the story.

I also loved that we are inside Rowan's head here. In book one, he was a bit of a mystery, not only for me but for Jude too. Now that we got to know him, I understand him better.

Despite the communication issues, Jude and Rowan have an amazing connection. Their chemistry is off the charts and the sex scorching hot. And he has a filthy mouth on him.

Overall, this is a great sequel and a very engaging story. I can't wait to read more of them!

What-ifs were cancerous and soul destroying.

This series is really good! I want more! I thought it was as good, if not better, as the first book. I felt like I was really reading a continuation of the first book. There are some books that aren't good with continuity (not the plot but the emotions and small stuff) so I applaud this. It had all the elements that I loved in the first book.

I have nothing else to say.

"Nothing's a waste of time," Jude brushed his lips to Rowan's again, a teasing nip, "when I'm with you."
How long have you been waiting to use that line?"
"Two days. It came from a Walmart commercial. Did it work?"
Rowan sighed and nuzzed at the satisfying scruff on Jude's cheek.
"Yeah, it worked."

After a strong-start-but-couldn’t-quite-keep-up-the-momentum experience reading book one of this series, I wasn’t sure what to expect with the follow-up. I liked the coupling of Rowan & Jude, so I was hoping that where book 1 started to fall short, book 2 might be able to salvage it.

And it did.

In book 2, we get Rowan’s story (where book 1 was more about Jude). And Rowan, being a complex character (stick straight law man who holds his emotions so fiercely guarded), with a difficult family history, made for an entertaining setup to this book.

First off, the mystery-element to this book was surprisingly good. I was kinda wondering the who’s and what’s and how’s throughout and I liked that I was kept guessing. I honestly hadn’t expected that since I pretty much called whodunnit in book 1 early on.

Secondly, the relationship between Rowan and Jude, as it grew, as it struggled, as it strengthened…really drew me in. As I mentioned, I like these guys…I’m interested in their HEA. But I also want to strangle them at times (often times). And that’s a difficult balance as a reader. It worked out much better in this book.

Yes, they continued to have their misunderstandings and miscommunications. But because there was a level of commitment there, I went along with it. I don’t think their relationship will ever be easy…the two of them are too broken and too stubborn. But I like watching their walls slowly come down and the romantic bits between them felt like a treat.

So, as the relationship grows, so the series grows, so does my buy-in grows. Here’s hoping for a book 3.

These two men made me nuts in this book. I swear, I wanted to make them wear that "get along" shirt where they both had their heads through the head part and each had one arm through a sleeve. Maybe being stuck together would have made them communicate. Maddening to read. They were so sweet with how they felt about each other but even after all they went through -- ain't nobody talking and they actually ignored obvious times they could have talked. It wasn't just relationship stuff, it was Rowan's history etc.

To be fair, the fact that I'm annoyed means the book got under my skin which means it was better than three stars and I'm reactionary rating. Okay. Changing to 4 stars.

High hopes for book three.

" I want it hard, fast and nasty.<<...>> Gonna take it right out of your ass, Jude."
"Yeah, do it. My ass is here for you."

Most UNsexy scene ever :(

After the descriptions of Rowan's childhood, I can't get why he would try and find out what happened to Shane or give one dime about his stepmother; he wasn't just ignored as a boy, he was actively bullied by Shane while his stepmother refused to acknowledge it. And now his stepmother asks that he come and find out what happened to his 'brother' because they're family? No way José. So, since the whole plot is beyond me, over half of the cast are a**holes, the sex scene is anything but sexy, I'll stop here and save myself any further frustration.

I received an ARC and totally devoured this book in just a few hours. Here's my honest review.

Rowan and Jude have gone through so much. This book picks up 6 weeks after Doubleback ended. Both men are healing from their injuries, physically and emotionally. They still seem to be having trouble with communication. Each assuming their feelings aren't reciprocated completely by the other.

Here we get a look at Rowan's life when he was a child. His stepmother Sunny is Evil! She's all about her druggie son and she never gave Rowan anything he needed as a child after his father died. Even where their relationship was left at the end of the book..I still can't stand the woman. Excuses Excuses!!

The sex between these men is still panty melting hot. I love both of them.

This isn't CSI Utica, Ma'am

I cracked up when Bailey said this to Sunny. Best line in the whole book!

Oh, I loved this sequel to Doubleback! Good plot that really held my interest, with Jude and Rowan cautiously exploring and deepening their relationship, while investigating if something terrible has happened to Ro's no-good druggie stepbrother, Shane. Jude and Ro are HOT together (sexy, dirty, steamy, love.love.love the dirty talk!) and it's great to get Rowan, as well as Jude's, POV in this book, since Rowan was pretty much a mystery in the first book in the series.

All the secondary characters are nicely fleshed-out (wow, Sunny is a Piece.Of.Work, isn't she?), but I felt the culmination of the mystery plot was a bit rushed. Also, I would have liked just a bit more of a synopsis of the plot from the first book to better pave the way for this book.

Again, I love these characters, but c'mon they just need to sit down and have a heart-to-heart rather than this endless skirting around what they have together! Maybe it's a sign of how well-written Jude and Ro are, since you get so vested in their relationship and WANT them to work things out. This book ends with a HFN and I look forward to the next book!

This story begins six weeks after the end of Doubleback. Jude and Rowan are reunited, but they are still not able to admit their feelings for each other.
The misinterpretations and the inability to communicate continue.

But Jude, as always, was a hard one to read, a man who defended his heart behind a fortress built of stony silence and shielded expressions.

"Swear to God, Jude. Do you two ever communicate beyond caveman grunts?"

And that Rowan must face his ugly past when his drug-addicted stepbrother is reported missing, simplifies the situation definitely not!

But of course they will get there.....
they were both a mess, scars inside and out, but at least they were a mess together. He knew his connection to this man would be the most important thing in his life until the day he died.

Saw this was Rowan's pov which I thought might be interesting, however got to maybe 30% before giving up. Not bad enough to 1* but not my cuppa.

I quickly got sick of the reminders of how great the sex between them supposedly is 'he was doing it because of the great sex' etcetera managed to (for me) diminish the relationship to being about sex. I was hoping to see them moving forward, building on what they've shared; instead Jude and Rowan are now communicating at the level of teenagers, complete with stomping out of the house.

Despite being told in this and the previous book how reluctant Rowan is to leave the closet I've seen no evidence of it. Considering the last book ended with their faces in the media and people linking them romantically, that boat has probably sailed. As an ex-duty sheriff I'd think Jude capable of telling giving an impertinent kid a put down instead of feeling defensive - and 'it's casual' is hardly a denial!

Then add in an angst-fest backstory and I was gone before drama happened. As far as I got the mystery aspect had only been introduced.

**** Mystery, sex, and a road trip ! **** This is exciting book two about Rowan and Jude. Big Ginger, Jude, survived the attack by the killer, and he and Rowan are trying to make a go of their relationship.

Rowan is still leery of being dumped, but is trying to be patient. Book one solved Jude's mystery, and now we'll find Rowan's suspenseful mystery.

Jude...

They are sizzling up the bedding once again with erotic sexiness, and talking, letting emotions out, but not enough. Problems arise when Rowan's druggie brother goes missing. Jude encourages Rowan to take the trip and check it out. The two of them are then thrown into a huge mystery, and more action, with a startling revelation. This story proves to everybody that communicating is a really key in any relationship.
The story flows with Lissa Ford's beautiful writing.
Highly recommended ! ENJOY !!!

Full review originally posted at Sinfully...Addicted to All Male Romance

This story picks up six weeks after the events of Doubleback, which you really should read before jumping into this book (see my review here). I enjoyed the first story and liked this one even better. Rowan is still on furlough from his job while healing from his injuries and is spending much of that time with Jude, rebuilding their relationship. When Ro’s stepmother calls him out of the blue asking for help finding Shane, the junkie stepbrother that tormented him as a child, Ro refuses her, but Jude pushes him to help, resulting in a return to the small town Ro left at eighteen and all the ghosts and drama he hoped he’d left behind for good.

While the first story focused on more on Jude, here we learn a lot about Rowan and see just how deeply he was scarred by childhood events, especially the loss of his parents, and how much guilt he has carried with him. The moment Jude and Ro are in the presence of Ro’s stepmother, you really feel for what Ro went through and how miserable he was after his father died.

This book builds on the relationship that was cobbled back together in the first story. I love the connection between the two men and seeing how protective Jude is towards Ro, whether he wants it or not. After a year apart they know that they want to be together, they just are not sure how to go about it. Jude’s “one day at a time” approach to their relationship has Ro believing he has to lock down his deepening feelings and that Jude wants to keep things casual. Since we have the inner dialogues of both men this time, we know that each is falling deeper for the other yet they are both afraid that verbalizing that feeling will send the other running and once again tear them apart. So how do they deal? Jude’s method is screwing Rowan senseless and then getting him to agree to things when he is in no state to argue. Ro bottles everything inside and eventually just shuts down and then runs.

There are a couple of really well written secondary characters involved in both the mystery of Shane’s disappearance and Ro’s past. Sunny is a piece of work, harping on Ro and glorifying her son who was always on drugs, lying and stealing from anywhere he could to support the habit. Harlan, Ro’s high school lacrosse coach who became a surrogate father to him and who Ro believes he disappointed and shamed, knows Ro well and offers insight into his struggles. While the new relationship is harshly tested, Jude’s protective instincts are in high gear during this trip, no matter how Ro tries to push him away Jude is not going anywhere without him. The mystery of Shane’s disappearance is well done. I didn’t really know what to expect between Sunny’s unreliable statements as to Shane’s turning his life around and the reality of his past behaviors.

This second book kicked the emotion up to high gear and although there were plenty of bumps and miscommunications along the way, each man finally lays everything on the line. The sex was just as hot as the first one and the men still have some great banter. I am really invested in Jude and Rowan now and the story ends with the men in a stronger relationship than ever and both have faced their big demons, but there are still potential pitfalls ahead, including Rowan having yet to fully come out and return to work. I am definitely looking forward to the next book in the series.

The second book in the series, this one focuses on Rowan and resumes about six weeks after Doubleback ends. In this installment readers gets to learn more about Rowan's background when he is persuaded by Jude to return home to his hometown to help solve the mystery of his missing no good druggie stepbrother at the bequest of his horrible selfish stepmother.

This installment was almost as good as the first one. I loved seeing the relationship development and all the insecurities Jude and Rowan were worried about. The action in this one was a bit lacking but seemed fitting for what kind of trouble had unfolded within the story. I liked that Rowan was kind of facing his demons and got some closure.

Double Down is the second book in the series and is a fabulous follow up to the first book where we met Rowan and Jude. Jude and Rowan are tough law enforcement men. They don't like to talk about their emotions and they both have inner demons to fight.

I thoroughly enjoyed the story and the mystery to be solved, but enjoyed the relationship development even more. The author's style really appeals to me. I like the way she brings the scene to life - the sights, the sounds, the feelings. The pace is fast, leading to a story that can be devoured in a single sitting.

Once again, the author provided a copy of this book with no expectations of a review. But given how much I'd enjoyed the first book, I knew I'd like this one and was eager to see how Ro and Jude had recovered from the events in book 1.

I recommend this series. 4.5 stars

Great continuation of their story, liked it a lot. Why not 5 stars? I found the solving of the mystery around the brother a bit too, well what - easy? On the other hand unbelievable? Predictable? A little bit of everything. Can't put my finger on it exactly, but I felt a bit let down. For all the build-up it ended rather anticlimactic.

What can I say other than I simply am in love with Rowan and Jude's relationship. I read the first book in this series only two months ago and I've been waiting for Double Down ever since and it did not disappoint. Like I stated in my review of Doubleback, I found myself connecting with Rowan more than Jude and was excited to see that this book would reveal more about him. I was so happy that some of the book was in Rowan's point of view, and was ecstatic that some of it was also from Jude's point of view because I love knowing what both of the characters are thinking, and it makes he miscommunication between them even more heartbreaking to read. The angst was so well written that I felt it in my soul and I must admit that cried a couple times while reading!

The subplot about Rowan's stepbrother was also interesting to me because of my own personal life experiences. It was well written and right on the nose about drug addicts and their relationships with the people around them.

One of my favorite things about Double Down is that it also left me feeling more connected to Jude than I had previously and I'm now happy to say that I love both boys equally which, honestly, is rare for me. I can't wait for book three, Double Cross!

A very engaging installment to this wonderful series! This book focuses on Rowan as we get a glimpse into his childhood. Jude and Rowan are back at it again as horrible communicators that bottle up everything inside, misunderstanding one another. The book itself isn't very long so it doesn't drag, and the mystery is engaging enough that it keeps you guessing. A thoroughly enjoyable read! Cannot wait for the next installment! :D

Rowan and Jude at it again! A few weeks after almost being killed, Rowan and Jude are healing together. They exist in a "take advantage of right now" moment in their relationship but both of them are too scared to admit what they really mean to each other.

Rowan gets called back to his dingy hometown to find his missing addict step-brother and of course, Jude goes with him. We get a direct insight into Rowan's crappy upbringing and probably the source of a lot of his commitment and trust issues. But Jude is there, solid, like his rock, and always constant.

Together, they crack the case, and all the while, get closer and discover more of each other. These two boys are always hot and I love reading their story! I absolutely cannot wait for more!!!!

Operation cohabitation, please!!!!!!!

I was up and down with this book. I liked Rowan and Jude as a couple. After reading the first book I felt that I got a little more background about Rowan. This was pretty much Rowan's story. It was a slight mystery story with an established couple. I think yhe fact that they were established made the second book better than the first. I had a tough time with there not being enough information on the first part of their relationship. It seemed as though they NEVER talked. That irritated me. After being together so long they should have been able to read each other a little. All in all, I liked the couple, the storyline, and the way the situations flow into each other. I would definitely recommend reading book 2.
