Rate this book
Two marine biology students attempt to reopen a cursed oceanographic project off the Outer Banks of North Carolina.
Annie Mitchell and her partner, Stewart Eddinger, get more than they bargain for when they find themselves haunted by intense impulses, hallucinations, and an intangible evil that seems to be the biblical Leviathan incarnate. As Annie and Stew continue their investigation into the heart of the mystery, they discover that they are being slowly consumed by an evil older than time, a horror that reaches from beyond a dark, haunted sea.

An excellent mind-bender of a tale about one woman and her obsession with a legend beyond anyone's imagining, a terrible place and legend that has been known to swallow all who dare to involve themselves in it. Recommended to fans of House of Leaves and horror novels with something more.

Dead Reckoning is a sea-drenched tale of obsession that plunges into madness, and M Cid's vivid descriptions of his protagonists descent into those depths is this book's greatest strength. M Cid really knows how to get into the minds of those loosing theirs, and this keeps the reader glued to the page. There are many subtle allusions to various sea-themed horror stories in this book, and spotting these is an extra boon for those that can recognize them. Highly recommended.

When I think of the horror that Lovecraft imagined, it often discussed the unknown, things moving in the dark, or under the water, massive creatures that were ancient, and immovable. That is the kind of horror that D'Angelo creates here, a terror that ebbs and flows, the tension burrowing under your skin, revelations sprinkled across the narrative like salt on a wriggling worm. Unsettling, powerful, and intense. A wild ride, and a great read.
