Probably the best book that this was going to be given its accidentally comic title and Ronseal premise.

The pages are formatted in a double column format, which is exasperating, and a lot of the content leans on large photos and explanations of paranormal phenomena which I suspect might also appear in Adams’ similar books about Dunstable, Luton etc: here’s the generic explanation, here’s the localised example. However, the examples do seem to have been extensively researched by the author, and some of the obvious nonsense is treated as such.

There’s a whole chapter about a YouTube video called the Stevenage Poltergeist: ostensibly a documentary which the makers continue to insist on the veracity of, its only results on Google (other than the video) are links to this book’s contents. Is Adams in on this, putting a bit of publicity into the book for the film crew? Are the makers hoaxers or hoaxees? Either way, I suspect someone’s messing about.

Chilling? No. It's a light and cozy read, rather on the well written side, with short chapters, suited for relaxation. If you're interested in history you'll like it even better.
